  • The rate of bromine-exchange reaction between antimony tribromide and ${\alpha}-phenyl-n-butyl$ bromide in nitrobenzene has been determined, using antimony tribromide labelled with Br-82. The results indicate that the exchange reaction follows the first-order kinetics with respect to the organic bromide, and either the second- or first-order kinetics with respect to antimony tribromide depending on its concentration. The third-order rate constant obtained was 7.50 ${\times}10^{-2}l^2mol^{-2}s^{-1}$ at 28$^{\circ}$C. Similar study on the bromine-exchange reaction between antimony tribromide and ${\alpha}$-phenyl-i-butyl bromide has also been carried out. The results of the study show the same kinetic orders as the ones observed with $\alpha$-phenyl-n-butyl bromide. The third-order rate constant observed was 2.40 ${\times} 10^{-2} l^2mol^{-2}s^{-1}$ at 28$^{\circ}$C. The activation energy, the enthalpy of activation and the entropy of activation for the two exchange reactions mentioned above have been determined. The reaction mechanisms for the exchange reactions are discussed.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the qualitative immunologic changes by ionizing radiation. we studied the altered capacities of the macrophages and lymphocytes to produce cytokines in conjunction with resistance to Listeria monocytegenes (LM) infection in mice Materials and Methods : BALB/c mice and Listeria monocytogenes were used. The mice were infected intraperitoneally with $10^5LM$ at 1 day after irradiation (300cGy) and sacrificed at 1, 3, 5 days after infection, and then the numbers of viable LM per spleen in the irradiated and control group were counted. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha ($TNF-\alpha$), interferon-gamma ($IFN-\gamma$). interleukin-2 (IL-2), and nitric oxide (NO) were assessed after irradiation. Results : Under gamma-ray irradiation with a dose range of 100-850cGy, the number of total splenocytes decreased markedly in a dose-dependent manner, while peritoneal macrophages did so slightly Cultured peritoneal macrophages produced more $TNF-\alpha$ in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) during the 24 hours after in vitro irradiation, but their capacity of $TNF-\alpha$ Production showed a decreased tendency at 5 days after in vivo total body irradiation. With 100cGy and 300cGy irradiation, cultured peritoneal macrophages produced more NO in the presence of LPS during the 24 hours after in vitro irradiation than without irradiation. Activated splenocytes from irradiated mice (300cGy) exhibited a decreased capacity to Produce IL-2 and $IFN-\gamma$ with Concavalin-A stimulation at 3 days after irradiation. When BALB/c mice were irradiated to the total body with a dose of 300cGy, they showed enhanced resistance during early innate phase, but a significant inhibition of resistance to LM was found in the late innate and acquired T-cell dependent phases. Conclusion : These results su99es1 that increased early innate and decreased late innate and acquired immunity to LM infection by ionizing radiation (300cGy) may be related to the biphasic altered capacity of the macrophages to produce $TNF-\alpha$ and the decreased capacities of the lymphocytes to produce IL-2 and $IFN-\gamma$ in addition to a marked decrease in the total number of cells.

  • In an effort to improve the mechanical properties of the belite cement active belite cement clinker was synthesized. Properties of the clinker were characterized by a XRD, FT-IE optical microscopy and SEM. The additive effects of slag on the hydration properties were investigated by the measurement of compressive strength heat evolution and SEM. The experimental results exhibited that the 3wt% borax was effective in stabilizing $\alpha$'-C2S and the addition of 5wt% anhydrite and 40wt% slag wee effective in the hydration.

  • ${\alpha}$-Galactosidase was partially purified from the culture filtrate of Debaryomyces sp. by Mannobiose-Sepharose affinity column chromatography. The galactosidase exhibited maximum activity at pH 4.0 and $60^{\circ}C$, and was stable in the pH and temperature ranges of 3 to 4.5 and 30 to $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was inhibited by $Hg^{2+}\;and\;Ag^{2+}$. The enzyme activity was not affected considerably by treatment with other metal compounds. The enzyme hydrolyzed melibiose to galactose and glucose, raffinose to galactose and sucrose, and $Gal^3Man_3$ ($6^3-{\alpha}$-galactosyl-1,4-mannotriose) to galactose and mannotriose. On the contrary, it could not hydrolyze $Gal^3Man_4$ ($6^3-{\alpha}$-galactosyl-1,4-mannotetraose).

  • A phylogenetic analysis of bacterial populations inhabiting soil derived from serpentine was conducted. The samples were collected from adjacent metamorphic rocks and serpentinite soil at Kwangcheon. The pH of the serpentine areas ranged from 8.5 to 9.2. The number of bacteria on the DAL medium which was diluted with $10^{-2}$ of AL medium was 10~100 fold higher than that from the full strength of AL medium, and which indicates that oligotrophs are distributed in the serpentinite soil. Of a total of 76 isolates, 42 isolates were oligotrophic bacteria, which grew only on the DAL medium. Based on a phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA sequences, these isolates are found to fall within five major phylogenetic groups: proteobacteria $\alpha$-subdivision (3 strains), $\alpha$-subdivision (7 strains), $\gamma$-subdivision (2 trains); high G+C gram-positive bacteria (19 strains); low G+C grampositive bacteria (14 strains). Bacteria of the genus Streptomyces (high G+C division) and Bacillus (low G+C division) have been considered to form a numerically important fraction of serpentinite soil. Oligotrophic strains categorized as Afipia ($\alpha$-subdivision), Ralstonia, Variovorax ($\beta$-subdivision), Pseudomonas ($\gamma$ -subdivision), Arthrobacter (high G+C division), and Streptomyces (low G+C division).

  • In this paper, the (S $r_{0.85}$.C $a_{0.15}$)Ti $O_{3}$ of paraelectric grain boundary layer (GBL) ceramics were fabricated, and the analysis of microstructuye and the thermally stimulated current(TSC) were investigated for understanding effects of GBL's interfacial phenomenon on variations of electrical properties. As a result, the three peaks of .alpha., .alpha. and .betha. were obtained at the temperature of -20 [.deg. C], 20[.deg. C] and 80[.deg. C], respectively. The origins of these peaks are that the .alpha. peak observed at -20[.deg. C] looks like to be ascribed to the ionization excitation from donor level in the grain, and the .alpha.' peak observed at 20[.deg. C] appears to show up by detrap of the trapped carrier of border between the oxidation layer and the grain, and the .betha. peak observed at 80[.deg. C] seems to be resulted from hopping conduction of existing carrier in the trap site of the border between the oxidation and second phase. and second phase.

  • The electrical conductivity of the system ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3-CoO$ was measured in the temperature range 200-1000$^{\circ}C$ and PO$_{2}$ range 10$^{-7}-2{\times}10^{-1}$ atm. Possible defect models were suggested on the basis of conductivity data, which were measured as a function of temperature and of oxygen partial pressure. The observed activation energies were 0.50 eV and 1.01 eV in the low- and high-temperature regions, respectively. The observed conductivity dependences on PO$_{2}$ were ${\sigma}\;{\alpha}\;PO_2^{-1/6}$ in the PO$_{2}$ range $10^{-7}-10^{-4}$ atm and ${\sigma}\;{\alpha}\;PO_2^{-1/4}$ at PO$_{2}$ 's of $10^{-4}-2{\times}10^{-1}$ atm at temperatures from 300-1000$^{\circ}C$. An extrinsic electron conduction due to an Vo defect and an intrinsic electron conduction due to an Fei' defect were suggested at different temperature and oxygen partial pressure regions, respectively.

  • Let C[0, T] denote the space of continuous, real-valued functions on the interval [0, T] and let C0[0, T] be the space of functions x in C[0, T] with x(0) = 0. In this paper, we introduce a Banach algebra ${\bar{\mathcal{S}}}_{{\alpha},{\beta};{\varphi}}$ on C[0, T] and its equivalent space ${\bar{\mathcal{F}}}({\mathcal{H}}) $, a space of transforms of equivalence classes of measures, which generalizes Fresnel class 𝓕(𝓗), where 𝓗 is an appropriate real separable Hilbert space of functions on [0, T]. We also investigate their properties and derive an isomorphism between ${\bar{\mathcal{S}}}_{{\alpha},{\beta};{\varphi}}$ and ${\bar{\mathcal{F}}}({\mathcal{H}}) $. When C[0, T] is replaced by C0[0, T], ${\bar{\mathcal{F}}}({\mathcal{H}}) $ and ${\bar{\mathcal{S}}}_{{\alpha},{\beta};{\varphi}}$ reduce to 𝓕(𝓗) and Cameron-Storvick's Banach algebra 𝓢, respectively, which is the space of generalized Fourier-Stieltjes transforms of the complex-valued, finite Borel measures on L2[0, T].

  • Efficient computation of r-th root in 𝔽q has many applications in computational number theory and many other related areas. We present a new r-th root formula which generalizes Müller's result on square root, and which provides a possible improvement of the Cipolla-Lehmer type algorithms for general case. More precisely, for given r-th power c ∈ 𝔽q, we show that there exists α ∈ 𝔽qr such that $$Tr{\left(\begin{array}{cccc}{{\alpha}^{{\frac{({\sum}_{i=0}^{r-1}\;q^i)-r}{r^2}}}\atop{\text{ }}}\end{array}\right)}^r=c,$$ where $Tr({\alpha})={\alpha}+{\alpha}^q+{\alpha}^{q^2}+{\cdots}+{\alpha}^{q^{r-1}}$ and α is a root of certain irreducible polynomial of degree r over 𝔽q.
