  • In this study, piezoelectric and dielectric properties of Lead-free $0.97[(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})(Nb_{0.97}Sb_{0.03})O_3]+0.03[(Bi_{0.5}K_{0.5})TiO_3]$ (abbreviated as 0.97NKNS-0.03BKT)ceramics synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction process were investigated as a function of $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition. The results indicated that the $K_{5.4}Cu_{1.3}Ta_{10}O_{29}$ addition significantly improved the sinterability, grain growth and piezoelctric properties of 0.97NKNS-0.03BKT ceramics. The optimum values as planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient ($k_p$= 0.355), piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$= 207 pC/N) and mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$= 128) were obtained when 0.009KCT was added. The electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$) was slightly decreased according to the increasing temperature.

  • [ $(Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5})TiO_3$ ][NBT] thin films were prepared on a highly (100) oriented $LaNiO_3[LNO]$ by sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction patterns of the NBT films annealed above $600^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes have confirmed a highly (100) oriented growth and pseudocubic structure (a=3.884${\AA}$). The (l00) orientation factor increased from 90 to $99\%$ with increasing soaking time from 5 to 60 minutes at $600^{\circ}C$. The NBT films ($600^{\circ}C$/5 min,) have a flat and dense microstructure with large columnar grains, and their grain size are about 44 nm. The Au/NBT/LNO/Si hetero structure sample show a ferroelectric properties.

  • Pb-free ferroelectric $(Na_{0.5}Bi_{0.5})TiO_3$ (NBT) thin films were prepared by a modified sol-gel process. Their structural, dielectric and pyroelectric properties were investigated as a function of the excess Na/Bi ratio and the annealing temperature. In the case of thin films containing no excess Na and Bi, only partial amounts of the perovskite NBT were crystallized, where the films consisted mainly of the pyrochlore phase of $Bi_2Ti_2O_7$ for annealing conditions of $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. With increasing excess Na/Bi ratio, the proportion of the perovskite phase effectively increased due to the compensation of the volatile Na and Bi components. For a Na/Bi ratio of 2.0, the thin film with single NBT perovskite phase was obtained within XRD detection limit after annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and it showed the excellent dielectric properties, ${\varepsilon}r$ of ~550 and tan ${\delta}$ of 0.03. While these properties were degraded for Na/Bi ratio of 2.5 despite the existence of pure perovskite phase. The NBT thin film with Na/Bi ratio of 2.0 are also promising candidates for applications requiring pyroelectric devices because it was found to have pyroelectric coefficients of $1.3{\sim}7nC/cm^2K$ in the temperature range of $30{\sim}100^{\circ}C$.

  • 0.935Ba$TiO_3$-0.065($Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5}$)$TiO_3+xmol%MnO_2$ (BBNTM-x) ceramics with $0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05$ were fabricated with muffled sintering by a modified synthesis process. Their microstructure and enhanced positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) characteristics were systematically investigated in order to obtain lead-free high TC PTCR thermistors. All specimens showed a perovskite structure with a tetragonal symmetry and no secondary phase was observed. Grain growth was achieved when the doped MnO2 was increased above 0.02 mol%. This is due to the effect of positive Mn ion doping as an acceptor compensating a Ba vacancy occurred by the higher donor dopant concentration of $Bi^{3+}$ ion. Especially, enhanced PTCR characteristics of the extremely low ${\rho}_{RT}$ of $9\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, PTCR jump of $5.1{\times}10^3$, ${\alpha}$ of 15.5%/$^{\circ}C$ and high $T_C$ of $167^{\circ}C$ were achieved for the BBNTM-0.04 ceramics.

  • The electrocaloric effect in $0.94(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3+0.06KNbO3+0.9wt%$ G.F.ferroelectricceramics was observed in terms of the temperature change (${\Delta}T$) of the fabricated ceramics, Curie temperature $T_c$, and applied electric field. The specimens were fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction. $T_c$ appeared near $165{\sim}170^{\circ}C$. The P-E hysteresis showed a tendency to slim down with a temperature increase and finally was slimmest near $150^{\circ}C$. With the increase of temperature, the polarization revealed a gradual decrease, and a sharp decline near $T_c$. When an electric field of 45 kV/cm was applied, the largest polarization was shown. The maximum value of the temperature change (${\Delta}T=0.31^{\circ}C$) was obtained at $165^{\circ}C$ under an applied electric field of 45 kV/cm.

  • The effects of $Nb_2O_5$ and $MnO_2$ on the positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) behavior of lead-free $Ba_{0.99}(Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2})_{0.01}TiO_3$ (BaBiNT) ceramics were investigated in order to fabricate a PTC thermistor available at high temperature of > $120^{\circ}C$. In particular, 0.05 mol% $Nb_2O_5$ added BaBiNT ceramic, which has significantly increased Curie temperature (Tc) of $160^{\circ}C$, showed good PTCR behavior; low resistivity at room temperature $(\rho_r)$ of $80.1{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, a high $\rho_{max}/\rho_{min}$ ratio of $5.65{\times}10^3$ and a large resistivity temperature factor (a) of 18.5%/$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the improved $\rho_{max}/\rho_{min}$ of $6.48{\times}10^4$ and a of 25.4%/$^{\circ}C$ along with higher $T_c$ of $167^{\circ}C$ despite slightly increased $\rho_r$ of $569{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, could be obtained for the BaBiNT + 0.05 mol% $Nb_2O_5$ + 0.02 wt% $MnO_2$ ceramic cooled down at a rate of $200^{\circ}C/h$.

  • In an approach to acclimate ourselves torecent ecological consciousness trend, a lead-free piezoelectric material, bismuth sodium titanate (abbreviated as BNT) based bismuth sodium barium titanate (abbreviated as BNT-BT), was considered as an environment-friendly alternative for a lead based piezoelectric system. Ceramic specimens of0.94[(BixNa0.5)TiO3]-0.06[BaTiO3] (x = 0.500~0.515) compositions were prepared by a modified mixed oxide method. To increase the chemical homogeneity andre action activity, high energy mechanical milling machine and pre-milled nanosized powder has been used. In this method (BixNa0.5)TiO3 (x=0.500~0.515) andBaTiO3 were prepared separately from pre-milled constituent materials at low calcination temperature and then separately prepared BNTX (X=1, 2, 3 and 4) and BT were mixed by high energy mechanical milling machine. Without further calcination step the mixed powders were pressed into disk shape and sintered at $1110^{\circ}C$. Microstructures, phase structures and electrical properties of the ceramic specimens were systematically investigated. Highly dense ceramic specimens with homogenous grains were prepared in spite of relatively low sintering temperature. Phase structures were not significantly influenced by the excess amount Bi. Large variation on the piezoelectric and dielectric properties was detected at relative high excess Bi amounts. When $x{\leq}0.505$, the specimens exhibit insignificant variation in piezoelectric and dielectric constant though depolarization temperature is found to be decreased. Considerable amount of decrease in piezoelectric and dielectric properties are observed with higher excess of Bi amounts ($x{\geq}0.505$). This research indicates the advantages of high energy mechanical milling and importance of proper maintenance of Bi stoichiometry.

  • In this study, we investigated the optimum calcination temperature of lead-free $0.74(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3-0.26SrTiO_3$(BNST) piezoelectric ceramics by analyzing the crystal structure, dielectric properties, and electric field-induced strain behavior. BNST ceramics prepared by conventional solid-state reaction methods at various calcination temperatures according to the industrial standard. All samples of BNST ceramics were subsequently sintered at $1,175^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Crystal structure classification of the ceramics showed a single perovskite phase, with no second phase detectable for the samples calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ or higher. BNST samples calcined at $850^{\circ}C$ exhibited the most optimal values for itsand the common physical parameters of $density=5.518g/cm^3$, ${\varepsilon}=1,871.837$, $tan{\delta}=0.047$, and ${d_{33}}^*=874pm/V$.

  • 0.75(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.25SrTiO3 (BNT-25ST) ceramics with high densities were successfully prepared at a sintering temperature of 1,000℃ by adding a mixture of 1 mol% CuO and 0.5 mol% Na2CO3 or 0.5 mol% CuO and 0.25 mol% Na2CO3. Double polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis curves and sprout-shaped bipolar strain-electric field (S-E) hysteresis curves with small negative strains were observed in the pristine and CuO-added BNT-25ST ceramics whereas the Na2CO3-added sample showed similar P-E and S-E curves to a typical ferroelectric. The pristine BNT-25ST ceramics showed an extremely large strain and a large-signal piezoelectric strain constant (d33*): 0.287 % at 80 kV/cm and 850 pm/V at 20 kV/cm. Similar values, 0.248 % at 80 kV/cm and 655 pm/V at 20 kV/cm, were obtained in the CuO-added sample. However, the pristine and CuO-added samples showed large hysteresis in unipolar S-E curves at an electric field of less than 20 kV/cm. The Na2CO3-added sample showed smaller values of the strain and d33* but displayed a linear change and small hysteresis in the unipolar S-E curve. The co-added sample with CuO and Na2CO3 displayed intermediate P-E and S-E hysteresis curves.

  • Optimum compositions for piezoelectric properties of $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{(1-x)}Ba_xTiO_3$ ceramics were investigated in the range of $x=0{\sim}0.1$ covering rhombohedral to tetragonal phase regions. No impurity phases other than a perovskite phase were found and the grain size decreased with increasing x. A two-phase coexisting morphotropic phase area rather than boundary dividing rhombohedral and tetragonal phase regions appeared to exist at $x=0.05{\sim}0.08$. As for piezoelectric properties within morphotropic phase compositions, the piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and the electromechanical coupling factor ($K_p$) showed peak values at x=0.065, 192 pC/N and 34%, respectively, indicating x=0.065 as an optimum composition for piezoelectric $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{(1-x)}Ba_xTiO_3$ ceramics.
