Science High School Students' Images of the Scientist before and after the Green Investigation with Scientists

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain science high school students' perceptions of scientists and their work before and after the Green Investigation program with scientists. This study also attempts to determine whether the program affected the participants' perceptions of scientists and their work. A modified DAST was carried out with 64 high school students. Findings revealed that Korean science high school students had normal perceptions of scientists, such as images of 20 to 30 year old males wearing laboratory coats and working alone in research labs with test tubes, flasks, and several machines in the background. After the intervention, students drew fewer typical items representing scientists and had significantly different perceptions of their work places between the pretest (M=1.69, SD=1.14) and posttest (M=1.96, SD=1.24, t=4.43, p<0.001) with the eta squared statistics (.24). These findings reflect the need for continued efforts of developing green investigation programs with scientists for students. Some future studies based on this study are also introduced.

Synthesis and Properties of Aromatic Poly(ether-ether-ester)s having Flexible Side Chain (유연한 곁사슬을 갖는 방향족 Poly(ether-ether-ester)의 합성 및 성질)

  • A series of wholly aromatic Poly(ether-ether-ester)s with flexible side chain was synthesized by direct polycondensation from ether linkaged triad diol and 2,5-dialkoxyterephthalic acid. The chemical structures and physical properties of these polymers were investigated by using $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, DSC and TGA. As results of investigations, the inherent viscosities($\eta$inh) measured at $40^{\circ}C$ in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane(TCE) were 0.45~0.86 dl/g and initial decomposition(Td) in TGA occurred at 378~418 $^{\circ}C$ in N2 gas. The majority of these polymers were soluble in organic solvents used in this experiments at elevated temperatures. Melting temperatures(Tm) decreased with increasing the length of the side chain and showed odd-even effects.

Effect of Mixing Ratio on Rheological Properties of Kochujang (배합비를 달리한 고추장의 레올로지 특성)

  • 찹쌀가루와 메주가루의 배합비율(무게비)을 달리한 고추장(찹쌀가루 : 메주가루 = 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 3:1)의 숙성 중 품질 변화를 평가하기 위해 12주 동안 숙성시키면서 고추장의 이화학적 특성, 효소 활성 및 레올로지 특성을 연구하였다. 숙성 중 고추장의 수분함량은 $47.4{\sim}47.9%$에서 점차 증가하여 8주에는 최대 수분함량을 보였다. 환원당 함량은 $2{\sim}4$주에 가장 높았으며 이후에서는 점차 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 아미노태 질소 함량은 지속적으로 증가하였다. ${\alpha}-amylase$${\beta}-amylase$ 활성은 숙성 $2{\sim}4$주에 최대 역가를 나타냈다. Acidic protease와 neutral protease는 각각 숙성 2주와 4주에 가장 높은 활성을 보였다. Power law 모델에 의한 유동성 측정에서 고추장은 낮은 유동성지수(flow behavior index, $n=0.21{\sim}0.36$)를 가진 전단담화(shearing-thinning)거동을 보여주었으며, 점조도 지수(consistency index, K)와 겉보기점도 $({\eta}_{a,10})$는 숙성 2주에 급격히 증가하고 이후에는 감소하였다. Casson 모델식에 의한 항복응력$({\sigma}_{oc})$은 숙성 2주에 급격히 증가하고 이후에는 감소하였다. 동적 점탄성 측정에서는 저장 탄성률 (G#)이 손실탄성률 (G') 보다 높은 수치를 나타내었고 주파수(frequency, ${\omega}$)가 증가함에 따라 증가하는 경향을 보여주었다. 또한 숙성기간이 경과함에 따라 (G#)과 (G@)이 증가하는 경향을 나타냈다.

Characteristics of Stress-Strain for Pocheon stone sludge (포천석분의 응력-변형률 거동특성)

  • In this study, a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the Undrained triaxial tests were performed on low-plastic silt of Pocheon stone sludge. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data. In experimental results the deviator stress showed the work hardening behaviour after reaching its yield stress. Therefore practically useful failure criterion for low-plastic silt were required. The stress-strain behavior predicted by 11 soil parameters are compared with the results obtained 9 parameters by correlation between h and ${\eta}_1$ and constant ${\alpha}$. They are poor matched each other.

Rheological Studies of the Tofu upon the Processing Conditions (제조조건에 따른 두부의 물성연구)

  • The changes in the rheological properties of soybean curd upon the processing conditions were measured by the failure test, and analyzed by the stress-relaxation data. Soybean curd coagulated with $CaCl_2$ showed a higher failure stress value than other coagulants such as $MgCl_2,\;CaSO_4\;and\;Glucono-{\delta}-lactone$ (GDL), whereas addition of 0.3% $CaCl_2$ produced higher failure stress value than other concentrations $0.2{\sim}0.6%)$. Also, maximum failure stress of soybean curd was shown at the higher heating temperatures$(95^{\circ}C)$ and greater molding pressures, respectively. Initial and equilibrium stress at the stress relaxation curves showed the same tendency as those of failure test, and magnitude of elastic elements$(E_0,\;E_e)$ and viscous element$({\eta})$ were numerically expressed through simple Maxwell model analysis.

  • Owing to the established international standards for reliability and safety management of railways and the third-part conformity assessment implementation, quantitative risk assessment focusing on communication system related to railway safety has being implemented. The quantitative risk assessment starts from the establishment of quantitative RAMS requirements; the risk has to be maintained under an acceptable safety level. This paper introduces the risk assessment process based on international standards ; risk assessment was conducted using failure data for railway facilities for about 5.5 years. In addition, based on the results, a scientific risk management method for railway facilities is suggested.

Photoelectrochemical Behaviour of Oxide Films on Ti-Ga2O3 Alloy (Ti-Ga 합금 위에 형성된 산화티타늄 피막의 광 전기분해 특성에 관한 연구)

  • With the aim to obtain $TiO_2$ films with an increased photorespones and absorbance in the visible region of the solar spectrum, the direct oxidation of titanium alloys were performed. In this study, $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ alloy was prepared by mixing, pressing and arc melting of appropriate amounts of titanium and $Ga_2O_3$ powder. Electrochemical measurements were performed in three electrode cell using electrolyte of 1M NaOH solution. The oxide films on $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ alloy was composed of $Ti_2O$, TiO, $TiO_2$, $Ga_2TiO_5$. The free energy efficiency (${\eta}e$) of $Ti-Ga_2O_3$ oxide films had 0.8~1.3 % and were increased with the increase of $Ga_2O_3$ content up to 10wt %. The onset potential ($V_{on}$) had -0.8V~0.9V ranges and were shifted to anodic direction with the increase of $Ga_2O_3$ content. The spectral response of Ti-$Ga_2O_3$ oxides were similar to the response of the $TiO_2$ and their $E_g$ were observed to 2.90~3.0eV. Variations of onset potential($V_{on}$) associated with electrolyte pH were -59mV/pH. This probably reflects the nature of the bonding of $OH^-$ ion to the $TiO_2$ surface, a common phenomena in the transition-metal oxides.

On the Mitochmria of Yeast and M-DNA (효모의 미토콘드리아와 M-DNA)

  • During the sporulation stage in Saccharomyces cerevisiae J170, the incorporation of D$^{14}$ C-glucose into starved cells of sporulation stage as well as the vegetative one is appeared higher at pH 6.0. Glucose transport system, in both the vegetative and sporulation stage, is associated with "energy dependent" as the result of repression by such a respiratory inhibitor as 2,4-dinitrophenol. The Km value of glucose uptake in vegetative stage and sporulation stage was 2.1 mM and 2.5 mM respectively, indicating that the glucose is considerably reuqired for vegetative growth. Competition and countertranspoer of glucose by frutose and galactose are more distinct in vegetative stage, comparing with sporulation stage. The main sugar components of yeast cells consists of ribose, mannose, and .apha., .betha.-glucose. Amounts of mannose is lower in the aporulation stage than that in the vegetative stage.ive stage.

Effects of bone-specific physical activity on body composition, bone mineral density, and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women

  • [Purpose] The study aimed to determine the effects of bone-specific physical activity on body composition, bone mineral density (BMD), and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women. [Methods] One hundred eighty-six middle-aged women aged 31-49 years participated in this study. The subjects were divided into tertile groups according to the level of physical activity (low-score group, n=62; middle-score group, n=62; high-score group, n=62). Bone-specific physical activity participation was assessed using the bone-specific physical activity questionnaire. Body composition and BMD were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Health-related physical fitness test included isometric muscle strength (grip strength), muscular endurance (sit-ups), flexibility (sit and reach), and cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max]). [Results] The high-score group had a significantly higher fat-free mass (p=.045, partial eta-squared value[ηp2]=.033) than the middle- and low-score groups, whereas the high-score group had significantly lower percent body fat (p=.005, ηp2=.056) than the other two groups. Whole-body BMD (p=.034, ηp2=.036) and lumbar BMD (p=.003, ηp2=.060) were significantly higher in the high-score group than in the low-score group. The high-score group performed significantly better for grip strength (p=.0001, ηp2=.101), sit-ups (p=.0001, ηp2=.108), and VO2max (p=.0001, ηp2=.092) than the other two groups. [Conclusion] The present study suggests that bone-specific physical activity could be useful in improving body composition, BMD, and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women, significantly enhancing their BMD and health conditions.

Overall Composition, and Levels of Fatty Acids, Amino Acids, and Nucleotide-type Compounds in Wild Abalone Haliotis gigantea and Cultured Abalone Haliotis discus hannai (자연산 말전복(Haliotis gigantea)과 양식산 참전복(Haliotis discus hannai)의 일반성분, 지방산, 아미노산 및 핵산관련물질 조성 비교)

  • Overall composition, and fatty acid, amino acid, and nucleotide-type compound levels in wild (Haliotis gigantea) and cultured abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), were investigated. Wild abalone had a higher moisture content than did cultured abalone, but the converse was true for crude protein content. In overall composition, crude lipid level was higher in the viscera than in the meat, with the greatest level, $2.02{\pm}0.15%$ (w/w), observed in the viscera of wild abalone. The major fatty acids were palmitic acid (16:0), oleic acid (18:1n-9), eicosatrienoic acid (20:3n-3, ETA), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA). The omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA and DHA) was higher in wild than in cultured abalone. A total of 17 amino acids were detected in all abalone samples, most of which had high levels of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, and arginine, and low amounts of cysteine, methionine, and histidine. Glutamic acid was the most abundant of all amino acids. The content of free amino acids was related to taste score. The major free amino acids were taurine, alanine, and arginine, of which taurine was the most abundant, and was present at higher levels in wild compared to cultured abalone. The total contents of nucleotide-related compounds in wild and cultured abalone were 12.93 mg/100g and 30.75 mg/100g, respectively.
