  • To utilize edible red algae paper for food packaging, red algae paper coated with green tea extract or catechin was prepared and microbial growth in bread wrapped with the paper was determined during storage. The paper coated with green tea extract or catechin had antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Packaging of bread with the red algae paper coated with green tea extract or catechin decreased the populations of total aerobic bacteria and yeast and mold after 2 days of storage by 0.41 and 0.63 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to the control. These results suggest that bread can be packaged by edible red algae paper coated with green tea extract or catechin, resulting in inhibit microbial growth during storage.

  • Contamination and growth of Trichoderma, a green mold, on the oak log and wooden chip or sawdust media can severely inhibit the growth of oak mushroom. Chemicals including pesticides and antibiotics are generally not allowed for the control of green mold disease during mushroom cultivation. In this study, bacterial pathogens causing blotch disease on the oyster mushrooms were isolated and their peptide toxins were purified for the control of green mold disease. Strains of Pseudomonas tolaasii secret various peptide toxins, tolaasin and its structural analogues, having antifungal activities. These peptides have shown no effects on the growth of oak mushrooms. When the peptide toxins were applied to the green mold, Trichoderma harzianum H1, they inhibited the growth of green molds. Among the 20 strains of peptide-forming P. tolaasii, strong, moderate, and weak antifungal activities were measured from 8, 5, and 7 strains, respectively. During oak mushroom cultivation, bacterial culture supernatants containing the peptide toxins were sprayed on the aerial mycelia of green molds grown on the surface of sawdust media. The culture supernatants were able to suppress the fungal growth of green molds while no effect was observed on the mushroom growth and production. They changed the color of molds from white aerial mycelium into yellowish dried scab, representing the powerful anti-fungal and sterilization activities of peptide toxins.

  • One of the most important paradigms in society has recently been a set of efforts to prepare for the future and to protect the environment by saving carbon that occurs in everyday life as well as in the industry. In order to successfully deal with this new paradigm, Korean government has adopted and implemented various policies including the green certification, the development of green technologies and green growth. Many agencies and organizations in both public and private sectors have established plans about the carbon savings and performed a lot of research using IT technology. For example, attempts have been made in Korea to use as electronic documents instead of paper documents using these green IT and mobile devices. This paper proposes a 'Paperless' waiting order count system using QR code and mobile phone as an example of green IT for 'Low carbon and Green growth'.

  • To study the influence of background color and substratum on hypermelanosis of starry flounder, we compared the daily food intake (DFI), the feed efficiency (FE), the survival, the growth, the ratio of pigmented area on the blind side and the ratio of hypermelanic fish duplicately reared for 180 days in dark-green FRP aquarium (control), white FRP aquarium together with dark-green substratum. The ratio of pigmented area on the blind side was significantly higher at the dark-green group than at the white group. DFI, FE and growth were higher in the dark-green substratum. Pigmented area rate and ratio of hypermelanic fish were significantly higher at the dark green group than at the high dark-green substratum. The results suggest that bright tank color and substratum bottom could inhibit the hypermelanosis.

  • The objective of this research was to establish the estimation method of growth information on potato using Multi-Spectral Image Sensor (MSIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS). And growth estimation map for determining a prescription map over the entire field was generated. To determine the growth model, 10 ground-truth points of areas of $4m^2$ each were selected and investigated. The growth information included stem number, crop height and SPAD value. In addition, images information involving the ground-truth points were also taken by an unmanned helicopter, and reflectance value of Green, Red, and NIR bands were calculated with image processing. Then, growth status of potato was modeled by multi-regression analysis using these reflectance value of Green, Red, and NIR. As a result, potato growth information could be detected by analyzing Green, Red, and NIR images. Stem number, crop height and SPAD value could be estimated with $R^2$ values of 0.600, 0.657 and 0.747 respectively. The generated GIS map would describe variability of the potato growth in a whole field.

  • Oak mushroom (Lentinus edodes) is cultivated by using oak logs and sawdust medium. Green mold (Trichoderma) infection on these media severely suppresses the growth of oak mushroom. Usages of antibiotics and chemicals are not generally allowed to control of green mold since the mushroom is a fresh food. Tolaasin and its analogues, peptide toxins secreted by Pseudomonas tolaasii, have the antifungal activity and they have been successful to control the green mold disease. When the green mold, Trichoderma harzianum H1, was cultured in the presence of these toxins, the growth of fungus was effectively suppressed. In sawdust media, when the bacterial culture supernatants were sprayed on the aerial hyphae of green molds, the fungal growth was completely suppressed. Particularly, the antifungal activity was greatly increased by the combined culture extracts of P. tolaasii 6264 and HK11 strains. Therefore, these bacterial strains and their peptide toxins were able to suppress the growth of green molds and these can be good candidates to prevent from Trichoderma disease in oak mushroom cultivation.
