  • The structure of 9-barbaralyl cation was examined by Hammett-Brown plot using $^{13}C$ NMR chemical shifts. 9-Aryltricylclo$[3.3.1.0^{2,8}]$]nonan-9-yl cation (5) and 9-aryltricyclo-$[3.3.1.0^{2,8}]$nona-3,6-dien-9-yl cation (6) were prepared from the corresponding carbinols in $FSO_3H-SO_2ClF$ solution at -$120^{\circ}C$, and their chemical shifts of cation centers were measured. The slopes, ${\rho}^{C+}$ values, of the Hammett-Brown plot of (5) and (6) were -5.01 and -7.52, respectively. From these values themselves, it seemed that the double bonds participated in the delocalization of the positive charge. However, comparing ${\rho}^{C+}$ value and ${\rho}^{C_a^+}$ value in 9-barbaralyl cation (6) and those in 8,9-dehydroadamantyl cation (7), we concluded that 9-barbaralyl should be represented by the structure 4 shown in Scheme I.

Chemical structures were confirmed by $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), $^{13}C$ NMR, Fourier transforminfrared spectrscopy, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The thermal properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. The relationships between the optical and electrochemical properties and the combined positions between these dimers were systematically investigated using UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), and photoelectron spectroscopy. These five dimers exhibited high fluorescent quantum yields and good morphological stability with high glass transition states > $174^{\circ}C$. Dimer 7 showed a UV absorbance peak at 353 nm, emission PL peak at 424 nm, and quantum efficiency of 0.62 in a cyclohexane solution.

  • Antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of heartwood extractives of domestic species were investigated to develop a natural fungicide or preservative. Four lignan derivatives and one taxane were isolated from heartwood of Taxus cuspidata which has been selected due to its high antioxidative activity among the tested species. The chemical structures were identified as : taxusin, isolariciresinol (4, 4', 9, 9'-tetrahydroxy-3', 5-dimethoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan), lariciresinol (4, 4', 9-trihydroxy-3, 3'-dimethoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan), taxiresinol (3, 4, 4', 9-tetrahydroxy-3'-methoxy-7, 9'-epoxylignan) and isotaxiresinol (3', 4, 4', 9, 9'-pentahydroxy- 5-methoxy-2, 7'-cyclolignan) on the basis of spectroscopic data and their chemical correlations. According to the results of free radical scavenging activity, isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol showed higher radical scavenging activity than those of 𝛼-tocopherol and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), the strongest natural and synthetic antioxidants. However, taxusin did not show any free radical scavenging activity. In this regard, it could inferred that high antioxidative activity of extractives of T. cuspidata was derived from isolariciresinol, lariciresinol and isotaxiresinol.

  • Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is a zinc and calcium-dependent proteolytic enzyme involved in extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of MMP-9 has been confirmed in several disorders, including cancers, Alzheimer's disease, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and dental caries. Therefore, MMP-9 inhibition is recommended as a therapeutic strategy for combating various diseases. Cinnamic acid derivatives have shown therapeutic effects in different cancers, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, and dental caries. A computational drug discovery approach was performed to evaluate the binding affinity of selected cinnamic acid derivatives to the MMP-9 active site. The stability of docked poses for top-ranked compounds was also examined. Twelve herbal cinnamic acid derivatives were tested for possible MMP-9 inhibition using the AutoDock 4.0 tool. The stability of the docked poses for the most potent MMP-9 inhibitors was assessed by molecular dynamics (MD) in 10 nanosecond simulations. Interactions between the best MMP-9 inhibitors in this study and residues incorporated in the MMP-9 active site were studied before and after MD simulations. Cynarin, chlorogenic acid, and rosmarinic acid revealed a considerable binding affinity to the MMP-9 catalytic domain (ΔGbinding < -10 kcal/ mol). The inhibition constant value for cynarin and chlorogenic acid were calculated at the picomolar scale and assigned as the most potent MMP-9 inhibitor from the cinnamic acid derivatives. The root-mean-square deviations for cynarin and chlorogenic acid were below 2 Å in the 10 ns simulation. Cynarin, chlorogenic acid, and rosmarinic acid might be considered drug candidates for MMP-9 inhibition.

  • In order to assess the physical growth pattern of Korean Youth, the authors measured the body height, body weight, chestgirth and sitting height of 40967 persons (24832 males and 16135 females) from primary schools, middle and high schools and colleges of metropolitan (urban) and rural areas, and calculated the mene, standard deviation, standard error and coefficient variance of the body weight chestgirth, sitting height and various pertinent index by body height to demonstrate the standard physical growth and development by body height of sex and age. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. Physical growth and development: Rapid growth of physical growth in terms of body height has been observed among males in the age $7{\sim}15$ and among female $7{\sim}13$. Growth in terms of body height turned out to be slower among students of higher age by both sexes. The age of cross over between to sexes is between 10 to 13 years where upon girls out grows boys. Maximum annual growth were upon girls out grows boys. Maximum annual growth were both of 6.16cm from 8 to 9 years old and 12 to 13 years old for boys and 7.2cm from 8 to 9 and 6.1cm from 9 to 10 for girls. This indicates that girls enter a rapidly growing stage 2 years earlier than boys. Meanwhile, prominent improvement in body height of national students over period of ten year was noticed. 2. The distribution status of body height by age: The distribution status of body height by age were as follows; 7 year of age: boys-30cm range of body height from 104.0cm to 133.9cm, girls-27cm from 104.0cm to 130.9cm 8 year of age: boys-30cm from 116.0 to 145.9cm girls-33cm from 113.0 to 145.9cm 9 year of age: boys-30cm from 116.0 to 145.9cm girls-33cm from 113.0 to 145.9cm 10 year of age: boys-39cm from 116.0 to 154.9cm girls-39cm from 119.0 to 157.9cm 11 year of age: boys-45cm from 119.0 to 163.9cm girls-39cm from 122.0 to 160.9cm 12 year of age: boys-45cm from 125.0 to 169.9cm girls-42cm from 125.0 to 166.9cm 13 year of age: boys-45cm from 128.0 to 172.9cm girls-42cm from 128.0 to 169.9cm 14 year of age: boys-48cm from 131.0 to 178.9cm girls-36cm from 134.0 to 169.9cm 15 year of age: boys-42cm from 137.0 to 181.9cm girls-33cm from 137.0 to 169.9cm 16 year of age: boys-39cm from 146.0 to 184.9cm girls-30cm from 143.0 to 172.9cm 17 year of age: boys-39cm from 146.0 to 184.9cm girls-27cm from 143.0 to 169.9cm 18 year of age: boys-36cm from 152.0 to 187.9cm girls-27cm from 146.0 to 172.9cm 19 year of age: boys-30cm from 155.0 to 184.9cm girls-24cm from 146.0 to 169.9cm 20 year of age: boys-24cm from 158.0 to 181.9cm girls-l8cm from 149.0 to 166.9cm 3. • Mowing is an important practice in golf course management. Mowing interval and height can affect net photosynthesis of turfgrass and finally shoot density, tillering, rooting and regrowth of turfgrass. The objectives of this study were to investigate the regrowth rate of zoysiagrass shoot under different mowing height for determination of proper mowing frequency. Recommended mowing interval were calculated by a rule that no more than 33% of the above ground height be removed in a single mowing. Daily shoot growth of zoysiagrass at 10 mm mowing height were 2.1~4.7 mm (July), 1.9~2.9 mm (August), 0.9~1.5 mm (September), and 0.6 mm (October). These results indicate that recommended mowing interval were 1.1~2.3 day for July, 1.7~2.4 day for August, 3.5~5.4 day for September, and 8.5 day for October, respectively. Daily shoot growth of zoysiagrass at 15 to 17 mm mowing height were 4.0~5.3 mm (July), 2.9~4.5 mm (August), 1.4~3.7 mm (September), and 1.3 mm (October). These results indicate that recommended mowing interval were 1.4~1.9 day for July, 1.7~2.5 day for August, 2.3~6.3 day for September, and 6.8 day for October, respectively. Daily shoot growth of zoysiagrass at 18 to 21 mm mowing height were 3.5~4.7 mm (July), 2.9~4.9 mm (August), and 1.5~1.8 mm (September). These results indicate that recommended mowing interval were 1.9~2.6 day for July, 1.8~3.1 day for August, and 5.9~7.0 day for September, respectively. Daily shoot growth of zoysiagrass at 50 mm mowing height were 4.6~4.9 mm (July), 5.0~6.5 mm (August), and 2.5~4.7 mm (September). These results indicate that recommended mowing interval were 5.1~5.4 day for July, 3.9~5.0 day for August, and 5.3~9.8 day for September, respectively.

  • Photodynamic therapy(PDT) is a treatment utilizing the generation of singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species(ROS), which selectively accumulate in target cells. The aim of present work is to investigate the photodynamic therapy mechanism of 9-HpbD-a-mediated PDT in HeLa cell lines. We studied the general reactive oxygen species(G-ROS) activation after 9-HpbD-a PDT using fluorescence stain with $H_2DCF-DA$. G-ROS activation observed after 9-HpbD-a PDT and higher activation condition was 1 hour after PDT at 0.5 ${\mu}g/ml$ 9-HpbD-a concentration. Sodium azide and reduced glutathione(the singlet oxygen quencher) could protect HeLa cells from cell death induced by 9-HpbD-a PDT. But D-mannitol(the hydroxyl radical scavenger) could not protect cell death. Singlet oxygen played a decisive role in 9-HpbD-a PDT induced HeLa cell death. Type II reaction was the main type of ROS formation at 9-HpbD-a PDT.

  • 2,7-dibromo-9, 9-dialkyl-substituted-fluorene derivatives were prepared by the alkylation of 2,7-dibromofluorene with various alkyl groups under two-phase phase transfer catalysis (PTC) conditions, as monomers for synthesizing poly(dialkylfluorene)s. Tetra-nbutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TBAHS) was used as a phase transfer catalyst to enhance nucleophilic substitution. In addition, NaOH in water (25M) was used as a base to generate anions. Compared to conventional alkylation using butyllithium(BuLi), the reaction using the PTC technique attained high selectivity and substantial conversion of reactants, due to the enhanced reaction rate, while the reaction was carried out under moderate conditions. An approximately 90% yield was obtained from the reaction and the reaction time was remarkably reduced. 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dihexyl-fluorene, 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dioctyl-fluorene, and 2,7-dibromo-9,9-di(2-ethylhexyl)-fluorene were effectively synthesized by phase transfer catalytic reaction.

  • The study of the $Na_3YSi_3O_9$ structure, by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectrum, showed that $Na_3YSi_3O_9$ is similar to $Na_4CaSi_3O_9$ except for its being pseudo-cubic instead of cubic. The peaks in the x-ray diffraction pattern of $Na_3YSi_3O_9$ could therefore be indexed on the basis of the $Na_4CaSi_3O_9$ cell. Also, modified $Na_3MSi_3O_9$ (M = Lu, Yb, Tm, Er, Y, Ho, Dy, Gd, Eu, and Sm) type compounds were synthesized by introducing excess sodium, decreasing M(III) concentration, and substituting small amount of phosphorus for silicon. The unit cell parameters of the composition $Na_{3.2}M_{0.7}Si_{2.9}P_{0.1}O_{8.7}$ were estimated from x-ray powder diffraction patterns using the Cohen method.
