  • A survey of ectomycorrhizal fungi was performed during 2009-2011 and 2015 in Byeonsanbando National Park. A total of 3,624 individuals were collected, which belonged one division, 1 class, 5 orders, 13 families, 33 genera, 131 species. The majority of the fruiting bodies belonged to orders Agaricales, Russulales, and Boletales, whereas a minority belonged to orders Cantharellales and Thelephorale. In Agaricales, there were 6 families, 9 genera, 49 species, and 1,343 individuals; in Russulales, 1 family, 2 genera, 35 species, and 854 individuals; in Boletales, 4 families, 19 genera, 40 species, and 805 individuals; in Cantharellales, 1 family, 2 genera, 5 species, and 609 individuals; and in Thelephorale, 1 family, 1 genus, 2 species, and 13 individuals. The most frequently observed families were Russulaceae (854 individuals representing 35 species), Boletaceae (652 individuals representing 34 species), and Amanitaceae (754 individuals representing 25 species). The greatest numbers of overall and dominant species and individual fruiting bodies were observed in July. Most species and individuals were observed at altitudes of 1~99 m, and population sizes dropped significantly at altitudes of 300 m and higher. Apparently, the highest diversity of species and individuals occurred at climatic conditions with a mean temperature of $23.0{\sim}25.9^{\circ}C$, maximum temperature of $28.0{\sim}29.9^{\circ}C$, minimum temperature of $21.0{\sim}22.9^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 77.0~79.9%, and rainfall of 300 mm or more.

  • Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), important pests of agricultural crops in Korea, including eggplant and potato, were collected in the Kyonggido area each summer from 1983 to 1986. Data were recorded for rates of parasitism against each host stage and seasonal activity. The parasitoids NothoserPhus afissae (Watanabe), (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae), Uga menoni (Kerrich), (Hymenoptera: Cha1cididae), and Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from the host insects. A solitary larval parasitoid, N. afissae, was reared from 2nd to 4th instar brval hosts, with parasitism being highest in the 3rd instar collection. U. menoni, a solitary larval-pupal parasitoid, was reared from 3rd instar larvae to pupae, and parasitism was highest in the pupal collection. N. afissae and U. menoni occurred during June to September. N. afissae showed relatively high parasitism during the entire study period as compared with other species, while parasitization by U. menoni was highest in July. P. foveolatus, a gregarious larval parasitoid, did not generally appear until September, although it appeared in early August in the southern part of Korea. The number of P. foveolatus emerging from a mummy varied, ranging from 7 to 26 (mean = 13. 8).

  • The multicolored Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis) has characteristic color patterns, which show great variability within species. Up to now, it has been well known that main factors affected on individual color pattern variations in the population of H axyridis are external, physical, and environmental characteristics. Indeed, there is as yet no evidence to indicate whether the variation is genetic or environmental factors. Also the factors which produce this variation are unknown in this species, although it is suspected that much of the variation is under genetic control. However, the genetic relationships among many of color types were investigated by observing the progeny of each particular pairs. It is worth mentioning a few particular breeding cases to illustrate certain facets of variability, and to indicate examples suitable for genetic analysis of the color pattern variation.

  • The effects of gamma irradiation on the survival, development, fecundity, and sex ratio of the multicolored Asian ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis) were investigated. A dose of more than 50 Gy dose of irradiation on eggs completely inhibited hatch, and 1st and 3rd instar larva irradiated with over 40 Gy almost died. Adverse effects of gamma irradiation over 70 Gy were also observed in the survival and development of pupae and adults. Although irradiated individuals usually survived, they had longer periods of larval and pupal development than untreated individuals. Slight female-biased sex ratios were observed in some treatments. However, sex ratio differences soon equilibrated. Generally, inherited harmful effects of gamma irradiation were observed in F1 and F2 generations. Comet tail indicating DNA damage was showed in survival individuals exposed to gamma irradiation.

  • An investigation of the effects of Pb for domestic anuran embryos were evaluated with the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay; Xenopus (FETAX). Depending on the species, the difference between the embryo size and the embryonic development time was determined. As a result, mortality and malformation rates were increased, malformation patterns were changed and larval body length were decreased in a dose dependent manner of the Pb. The half maximal lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) of the Bufo gargarizans, Hyla japonica, Rana nigromaculata and Bombina orientalis were 0.58, 0.49, 0.52, $0.54mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The half maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) of the Bufo gargarizans, Hyla japonica, Rana nigromaculata and Bombina orientalis were 0.35, 0.74, 0.30, $0.29mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The teratogenic index (TI) were 1.66 in the Bufo gargarizans, 1.81 in the Hyla japonica, 1.73 in the Rana nigromaculata and 1.86 in the Bombina orientalis, respectively. Therefore, the Pb seems likely to have a teratogenic effect in all four species' embryonic development. The Bombina orientalis was the most sensitive to the Pb. This means that the difference between the different species, even if they have all been exposed to the same concentration of pollutants depending on the species. The result above show that the Pb acts as a teratogenic agent in the development of the four domestic frog species.
