The histochemical characteristics of the cutaneous mucous glands and its fine structure of the Korean fire bellied toad, Bombina orientolis Boulenger, were studied with light and electron microscopes. The mucous glands of the toad are simple alveolar gland, and are composed of inner glandular epithelial cells and outermost myoepithelial cells. Histochemical studies suggest that main secretory materials released from the mucous glands might be acid mucopolysaccharides which is more abundant in the ventral skin than in the dorsal skin. The scanning electron microscopic observation showed that the morphology of the opening sites of the gland duct is similar to the morphology of stomata on the plant leaves. Glandular epithelial layers of the mucous glands are composed of two cell types, the mucous secreting cells and the mitochondria rich cells. The mucous secreting cells could be classified according to the morphology and inner textures of cytoplasm and those characteristics were seemed to be related to the degree of maturation of the cells. Furthermore the mucous within the mucous secreting cells appears to be synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
The antifungal activities of 153 extracts from 51 species of Korean mushroom on six phytopathogenic fungi were investigated. The powder of fruit-body of each mushroom was extracted with petroleum ether, 80% ethanol and distilled water. The water extracts of four mushrooms including Amanita virosa showed antifungal activities on Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum graminicola, Fusarium solani, Idriella bolleyie. The 80% ethanol extracts of seven mushrooms including Boletus auripes showed antibiotic activities against A. alternata, C. gramincola, Cylindrocarpon destructans, F. solani, F. oxysporum cucumerinum, and I. bolleyie. The petroleum ether extracts of six mushrooms including Amanita citrina showed antibiotic activities against A. alternata, C. destructans, and C. graminicola. The 102 extracts of 34 mushrooms including Agaricus arvensis didn't show antibiotic activities.
This study described the spermatozoa of the discoglossidae Bombina orientalis using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Sperm head possess a crescent or leaf shape, with a moderately flexible head, and with a sharp anterior and posterior tips. The nucleus are a thick cone shaped in the widest middle part of nucleus, and a slender anterior and posterior of nuclear tips. The chromatin is not completely compact, but irregularly imbricated such as roof. Some nuclear lacunae, irregular in shape, are scattered within the nucleus. No neck and middle piece were developed. The flagellum is composed of 9+2 axoneme, axial rod and undulating membrane. The mitochondria were distributed only in cytoplasmic membrane around the nucleus. In particular, the nuclear rod contains bundles of fibers, the rod penetrating from anterior portion to the middle of the nucleus, is extended roughly two-thirds of the nucleus such as eyelashes shaped.

Studies were conducted to investigate hosts, life cycle, population dynamics and natural enemies of mulberry scale, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona Ta. & Tozz., from 1987 to 1988 in southern region of Korea. The host plants were 22 families and 74 species. Host plants belonged to genus Prunus in general were severely damaged due to mulberry scale. Mulberry scale was most likely to have three generations a year with first occurrence of larval stage from mid-May to late June, second occurrence from mid-July to mid-August and third occurrence from early September to late October including 3 peaks in early and mid-June, late July and mid-September. In case of each stage occurrence, eggs were peaked on 10th day, larvae on 25th day and adults on 7th day from beginning of occurrence, respectively. Natural enemies were observed as parasitoids of 3 species such as Aphytis diaspidis, Archenomus orientalis and Apterencyrtus mocrophagus and as predators of 3 species such as Chilocorus Kuwanae, Chilocorus rubidus and Hormonia axyridis. Shoot growth was affected by mulberry scale and Lepra to dwindle as much as half of normal growth.
Remodeling of epithelial cells during wound healing in the skin of the Korean fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis, were examined using the scanning and transmission electron microscopical analyses. Artificial wounds were induced on the dorsal surface of the skin by excision, and reared in special cages with normal diets for up to 31 days after injury. From 4 days after wounding, regenerated epithelial cells are more rapidly migrated to wounding area, and remodeling of tissue components are proceeded gradually. Especially, formation of basal lamina between regenerated epithelium and dermis, and reconstruction of cellular junctions such as desmosomes (among the regenerated epithelial cells) and hemidesmosomes (between basal epithelial cells and basal lamina) are detected through fine structural analysis from 10 days after injury. Parakeratosis of regenerated epithelial cells observed during 16 to 19 days after wounding.
Amphibians are a taxonomic group that ecologically connects terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems. They play a very important role in the food chain of the ecosystem. It is known that there are about 5,948 species distributed all over the world, but after the Industrial Revolution, due to industrialization and urbanization, there has been a decrease in species and populations. In particular, it is becoming a factor in exacerbating habitat fragmentation or fragmentation due to artificial canals. In orderto improve the survivalrate of wild animals in artificial canals, escape facilities are installed to reduce it. This study analyzed the slope, height of the escape facility, escape rate, and travel distance in the operating facility for Bombina orientalis, which mainly inhabits near forests. The slope of the escape facility showed a relatively similar escape success rate regardless of height at 50° and 60°, while at 70°, it showed a relatively high escape success rate at only 40cm in height. The success rate of escape from the waterway escape facility in operation was 14.71%, showing a very low utilization rate, and the recognition rate of the artificial canal escape facility was found to be very low as it moved along the side wall of the artificial canal. Therefore, in the case of a waterway escape facility for Bombina orientalis, it is possible to construct it at an angle of 60°, and if the side walls of the artificial canals are built within 60°, Bombina orientalis can move freely in both directions, overcoming the low utilization rate of existing waterway escape facilities. It is expected to minimize the impact of movement and death of artificial canals. In addition, if the spacing between escape facilities is narrowed from the installation standard of 30m and ramps are constructed in both directions upstream and downstream, the escape success rate of amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals otherthan lady frogs is expected to improve.
Inflammation in the brain has known to be associated with the development of a various neurologiacal diseases. The hallmark of neuro-inflammation is the activation of microglia, brain macrophage. Pro-inflammatory compounds including nitric oxide(NO) are the main cause of neuro-degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease. In the study, we examined whether Harmonia axyridis extracts inhibit the NO production by a direct method using Griess reagent, western blotting and by RT-PCR(Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reactionin) the gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS). Distilled water$(H_2O)$ and methanol(MeOH) extracts of H. axyridis inhibited the protein expression of TNF-a(Tumor Necrosis Factor) and IL-6(Interleukin) in LPS (Lipopolysaccharide) stimulated BV-2 cells at the concentration of 100 ng/ml. Incubation of BV-2 cells with the extracts of $H_2O$ of MeOH inhibited the LPS induced NO and iNOS protein. And this inhibition of iNOS protein is concordant with the inhibition of iNOS mRNA expression. These data suggested that H. axyridis extracts may play a crucial role in inhibiting the NO production.
Nonylphenol (NP), an well known aquatic contaminant, has been known to induce abnormalities in various aquatic animals. In an effort to develop proteome in the study of aquatic contamination of NP and its impact on the amphibia, protein changes in liver tissues of Korean red bellied frog, Bombina orientalis was investigated following the NP exposure. NP was administered intraperitoneally to male B. orientalis at 10 mg/kg body weight. At 48 and 96h after the treatment, the frog livers were sampled, and the protein fraction was separated using two dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D/E) and visualized with Coomassie brilluant blue staining. The 2D/E Images of the tissue from the animals treated with NP showed marked changes of protein spots (about 20% of total protein spots). Analysis of the 50-60 separated spots allowed identification of the major protein changes in the overall pattern for the stressor (NP) by time (0,48 and 96 h). At 48h after treatment, 8 spots were increased and 12 spots were reduced. Then, at 96h after treatment, 10 spots were increased and 8 spots were reduced. In total, approximately 29% of liver proteins showed the altered expression following the NP treatment. It is suggested that protein expression was repressed by blocking of certain metabolisms at 48 hand induced by the synthesis of new proteins for adaptation at 96 h following NP exposure. This application for 2D/E analysis may show promise in searching biomarkers for environmental proteomics in amphibians.
