  • Chemical oxygen demand (COD), an organic material measurement index, has a limit to the management of the total amount of all organic materials including non-degradable organic materials due to low oxidation rate. So total organic carbon (TOC) that can measure organic materials more accurately is introduced and used as a measurement index. Several environmental companies including company A in Gyeonggi-do dilute raw wastewater first and then treats it with chemicals. And an activated carbon is used at the rear stage to treat total organic carbon even though various treatment processes can be applied to reduce TOC in wastewater. There are some problems such as use of a lot of diluting water and generation of an excessive amount of sludge, so it is urgent to come up with an alternative plan. Therefore, in this study, an application experiment was conducted on two different methods for improving the TOC reduction efficiency of waste water from Company A. The first method is the evaluation of the substitution potential of powered activated carbon(PAC), an adsorbent currently used, by manufacturing cellulose-based graphene like carbon (CGLC). This first study showed that CGLC had about 10% higher TOC adsorption efficiency than commercial PAC, showing the possibility of being applied as an alternative adsorbent for PAC in water treatment sites. The second method relates to the removal of TOC by sulfate radials produced by persulfate (PS) activation. Two activation methods were applied: using CGLC and PAC as carbon-based catalyst and using the high temperature of wastewater for PS activation. As a result of using PAC and CGLC as PS activation materials, the TOC removal rate was lower than the adsorption amount of TOC by CGLC and PAC due to excessive chlorine ions present in the real wastewater. However, as a result of using the high water temperature (55~60℃) of the field wastewater for PS activation, it showed a much greater TOC removal efficiency than PAC alone, CGLC alone, and using a carbon-based catalyst for PS activation. When PS was injected more than 0.5%, it showed a TOC removal efficiency of 95% or more within 24 hr. In addition, when PS was injected more than 0.3%, the TOC concentration could be lowered to less than 75 ppm, which is the wastewater discharge standard applied to company A. When these results were summarized, raw wastewater of high temperature can be treated with a simple process of only adding of PS and discharged by treating TOC below the wastewater discharge standard applied to company A.

  • In this paper, the factors affecting tissues during fixation on slides were determined by changing the tissue type, fixation time, and temperature. Also, stainability and DNA conservation were evaluated. The tissues selected were parenchymal and intestinal tissue. The stainability was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining and a special stain suitable for the tissue. DNA conservation was evaluated using the DNA integrity number (DIN) for stability evaluation after purity measurement. The results showed that, at all temperatures, as time increased, there was no histomorphological difference and the stainability tended to intensify. The intestinal tissue tended to have less mucosal change and proper muscle layer degeneration. There was little difference in the purity. However, the longer the fixation time, the lower the DIN value for DNA. Significant differences were identified at 25℃ and 50℃. This means that fixation at 4℃ is the more safe for DNA. This experiment confirmed that, between the time and temperature conditions associated with fixation, time had a greater effect on both staining and DNA conservation. The results of this study are expected to provide basic data for future research on the setting appropriate conditions for fixation for histopathological examinations or diagnoses.

  • Korea has developed as an influential country over Asia and all over the world based on remarkable economic development. And the background of this development was possible due to the existence of those who sacrificed precious lives and contributed to the nation's existence in the past crisis. Every year, Korea holds an annual commemorative event with people of national merit, Korean War veterans, and their families, expressing gratitude for sacrifices and contributions at home and abroad, and providing economic support. The tragedy of the Korean War and the pro-democracy movement in Korea over the past half century will one day become a history of the distant past over time. As generations change and the purpose and method of exchange by region change, the tragic situation that occurred earlier and the way people sacrificed for the country are expected to be different from before. In particular, it is true that the number of Korean War veterans and their families is gradually decreasing as they are now old. In addition, due to the outbreak of global infectious diseases such as COVID-19, it is difficult to plan and conduct face to face events as well as before. Currently, Korea's digital technology is introducing various methods. 5G communication networks, smart-phones, tablet PCs, and smart devices that can experience virtual reality are already used in our real lives. Business meetings are held in a metaverse environment, and concerts by famous singers are held in an online environment. Artificial intelligence technology has also been introduced in the field of human resource recruitment and customer response services, improving the work efficiency of companies. And it seems that this technology can be used in the field of veterans. In particular, there is a metaverse technology that can vividly show the situation during the Korean War, and a way to digitalize the voices and facial expressions of currently surviving veterans to convey their memories and lessons to future generations in the long run. If this digital technology method is realized on an online platform to hold a veterans' celebration event, veterans and their families on the other side of the world will be able to participate in the event more conveniently.

  • Kinesin superfamily protein 5A (KIF5A) is the motor protein of kinesin-1 and forms a heterotetrameric complex by binding to KIF5B or KIF5C and kinesin light chains (KLCs), a non-motor protein. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-associated KIF5A single nucleotide variants are clustered in the near exon 27 and are predicted to have a change in the carboxy (C)-terminal region of KIF5A. In patients with ALS, mitochondria membrane protein prohibitin 1 (Phb1) and Phb2 were found downregulated in the spinal cord. In this study, we confirmed that Phb2 binds to KIF5A. Phb2 bounds to the C-terminal region of KIF5A, which is the KIF5A-specific terminus, and KIF5A bounds to the C-terminal region of Phb2 but not to Phb1 in a two-hybrid assay. In human embryonic kidney-293T cells co-expressing EGFP-Phb2 and myc-KIF5A plasmids, Phb2 was co-immunoprecipitated with the motor proteins of kinesin-1, KIF5A and KIF5B, and the non-motor protein KLC1. In addition, both EGFP-Phb2 and myc-KIF5A were expressed at the same location in the cell. These results suggest that the binding of KIF5A to phb2 plays a role in mediating the association of kinesin-1 with mitochondria.

  • Modern environmental problem that caused by the structure and system of human civil society threaten the ecological sustainability of the entire earth. Therefore it is an ecological crisis as a structural crisis. This ecological crisis is also a social crisis because it makes the survival of society difficult. Our society should aim and pursue an ecologically sustainable society because our response to this structural ecological-social crisis must be social-structured. Efforts to achieve an ecologically sustainable society call for fundamental and far-reaching changes in lifestyle, production and consumption patterns, and changes in the already established power structure that govern society today. It is necessary to pay attention to the new formulation of the constitutional law which is the legal basic order of the national community in the point that this fundamental and broad change must start from establishing the right relationship with nature. In this article, we present the principle of environmental state as a framework of constitutional norms for an ecologically sustainable society. According to M. Kloepfer, who in the late 1980s used the concept of an environmental state in Germany for the first time, the "state of the environment" refers to a "state (institution)" in which the inviolability of the environment is a measure and process goal of the state tasks and decisions. I would like to establish the environmental state as "a state that guarantees a balance between the social demands for nature and the maintenance of the natural living foundations and forms it together. In this context, I intend to establish the components of environmental state principles as follows. First, the ideological foundation of the environmental state is to respect the life community on earth, which consists of human beings and non-human beings, and to intrinsic value of nature, and to harmony with nature. In addition, the key tasks of environmental states are to secure environmental rights, responsibility for the global ecosystem and future generations, and recognition of the interests of animals. As a core social system for realizing this environmental state principle I would like to present (i) the economic order, (ii) the sustainable maintenance and management of the land and natural resources, and (iii) the agricultural and fishery industries and local communities.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and meaning of the Korean American women's poetry in New York area. New York area poetry has been led by women poets from the very beginning of the paragraph. In this paper, set the starting point of "New York Literature" in 1991, and classified the poets who had started their activities in the past as a first generation, and poets who have been active since then, as second generation. The characteristics and meaning of women's poetry were examined by focusing on Kwak Sang-hee, Kim Jung-ki, Kim Song-hee, and Choi Jeong-ja in the first generation, Jo Seong-Ja, and Shin Ji-hye, An Young-ae, Bok Young-mi in the second generation. On the one hand, they share a common sentiment of immigrant women, while on the other they show a slightly different world recognition and identity for each poet. The characteristics of women's poetry in New York area are as follows: ① they express the nostalgia for their experience and home in a strange space, ② that they reveal their identity as a mother and a poet, ③ they show the experience of labor and other consciousness, and ④ shows the changing identity through Nomadistic thought and de-territorialization. Although the content of the prototypes of female poets differ slightly depending on the motive and timing of immigration, in the early days of immigration, mainly the nostalgia for their hometowns and the consciousness of the Gentiles have become a poetic theme, and the alienation ceremony, And as time passes it shows consciousness as a settler who regards America as their second hometown. In the 1990s, most of the first-generation women poets have been harsh with the process of adaptation and settlement, revealing the nostalgia for their hometowns. Jo Seong-Ja and Shin Ji-hye, who are doing their work in the 1990s as a settlement stage, are adapting easily to American society compared to their predecessors. They also show that they are able to overcome ethnicity and race, It shows the open vision and identity to overcome. If the first generation of immigrant women has been leading the flow of New York poetry since the liberation, it is meaningful that second generation of women's poetry can be used as a measure of future change and development of New York poetry.

  • This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Anemarrhena asphodeloides extracts using supercritical extraction. In the antioxidant test, the total concentration of polyphenol compounds was determined to be 22.58 mg/g (supercritical extraction), 18.75 mg/g (ethanol extraction) and 17.69 mg/g (hydrothermal extraction). The DPPH radical scavenging effects were 89.84% (ethanol extraction) and 64.86% (supercritical extraction) at 2000 mg/L. ABTS radical scavenging ability had an IC50 value at 250~500 mg/L for supercritical extraction, higher than that for hydrothermal and ethanol extractions. At 1000 mg/L, elastase inhibition rates were 64.08% for ethanol extraction and 45.84% for supercritical extraction. The antimicrobial effect of the supercritical extraction was higher than that of hydrothermal and ethanol extractions. NO production with stimulated LPS was decreased in a concentration-dependent manner and, at 20 ㎛/mL, NO production was reduced by 77% for supercritical extraction compared with 46% (ethanol extract) and 63% (hydrothermal extract). Here, we confirmed that superficial extracts of Anemarrhena asphodeloides displayed excellent antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiinflammatory effects and have potential to be used as a safe and natural cosmetic material in the future.

  • With the advancement of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, the maritime sector is actively developing technologies and policies related to autonomous ships. This study aims to identify and prioritize various factors influencing the adoption of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) by conducting surveys among experts and professionals in the maritime industry. To achieve this, relevant factors related to the adoption of autonomous ships were examined through a review of previous research, and survey questions for pairwise comparison using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) were developed based on the insights of industry experts. The pairwise comparison items were categorized into four main factors at the highest level, with each factor further subdivided into sub-factors to establish their priorities. The survey results, which distinguish between shipowner and non-shipowner groups, reveal that, among the main factors-economic, legal and policy, safety and security, and technical-the shipowner group prioritized economic factors, though the difference from safety and security factors was relatively minor. In contrast, the non-shipowner group rated safety and security factors as the highest priority, with economic factors ranked lowest. Further analysis of the sub-factors across both groups indicated that, for economic factors, the increase in operational profit was most critical; for legal and policy factors, regulations related to structural equipment were paramount; for safety and security factors, the risk of equipment and machinery failure was key; and for technical factors, accident response technology was most significant. This study provides strategic insights for stakeholders by systematically analyzing decision factors for adopting MASS through AHP analysis. The findings enable companies to establish efficient resource allocation and investment strategies, while policymakers can utilize the results to guide policy and regulatory directions. Moreover, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by solidifying the framework of determinants for MASS adoption, incorporating commercial considerations alongside technical and legal factors. The results not only offer fundamental information for future research but also provide a rationale for informed decision-making in the shipbuilding and maritime industries regarding MASS adoption and operation.

  • Groundwater is an important water resource used for various purposes along with surface water. Jeju Island relies on groundwater for most of its water use, so predicting and managing groundwater volume is very important for sustainable use of groundwater. In this study, precipitation data from the Baekrokdam Climate Change Observatory was additionally used to accurately predict groundwater levels. We compared and analyzed the improvement in monthly groundwater level prediction performance of the ANN and LSTM models for two observation wells located in the mid-mountainous area of the Pyoseon watershed in Jeju Island. As a result, when Baekrokdam precipitation data was not used, the NSE values of the two artificial intelligence models were over 0.871, showing very high groundwater level prediction performance. The LSTM model showed relatively higher prediction performance at high and low groundwater levels than the ANN model. We found that the prediction performance decreases as the variation characteristics of the groundwater level become more complex. When Baekrokdam precipitation data was additionally used, the NSE values of the two artificial intelligence models were above 0.907, indicating improved prediction performance, and the NSE value was improved by up to 0.036. This means that when additional rainfall in the upstream area is used, the artificial intelligence model can more appropriately interpret the fluctuating characteristics of the groundwater level. In addition, the additional use of Baekrokdam precipitation data further helped improve groundwater level prediction for observation well, where groundwater level prediction is relatively difficult, and artificial intelligence models, which have relatively low groundwater level prediction performance. In particular, when Baekrokdam precipitation data was additionally used for a specific observation well, the groundwater level prediction performance of the ANN model was improved to a level comparable to that of the LSTM model. The methods and results of this study can be useful in future research using artificial intelligence models.

  • Background: The prevalence of tuberculosis in Korea decreased remarkably for the past 30 years, while the incidence of disease caused by mycobacteria other than tuberculosis is unknown. Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases performed national survey to estimate the incidence of mycobacterial diseases other than tuberculosis in Korea. We analyzed the clinical data of confirmed cases for the practice of primary care physicians and pulmonary specialists. Methods: The period of study was from January 1981 to October 1994. We collected the data retrospectively by correspondence with physicians in the hospitals that referred the specimens to Korean Institute of Tuberculosis, The Korean National Tuberculosis Association for the detection of mycobacteria other than tuberculosis.
