Improved Anti-Cancer Effect of Curcumin on Breast Cancer Cells by Increasing the Activity of Natural Killer Cells

  • Curcumin is known to possess various biological functions, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-cancer activities. Natural killer (NK) cells are large lymphocytes that directly kill cancer cells. However, many aggressive cancers, including breast cancer, were reported to escape the successful killing of NK cells in a tumor microenvironment. In this study, we investigated the anti-cancer effect of curcumin in coculture of human breast carcinoma MDA-MB-231 and NK (NK-92) cells. We found that curcumin had an immune-stimulatory effect on NK-92 by increasing the surface expression of the $CD16^+$ and $CD56^{dim}$ population of NK-92. We confirmed that the cytotoxic effect of NK-92 on MDA-MB-231 was significantly enhanced in the presence of curcumin, which was highly associated with the activation of Stat4 and Stat5 proteins in NK-92. Finally, this improved anticancer effect of curcumin was correlated with decreased expression of pErk and PI3K in MDA-MB-231.

  • Localized rainfall due to abnormal climate has caused extensive damages killing several tens to hundreds of people for yearly basis. The typhoon 'Lusa' of year 2002 has resulted 5,400 billion won of property damage and the damages for roads were approximated to be 2,860 billion won at 12,377 locations holding 53% damage of total. The recent typhoon, 'Aewinia' of yeat 2006 caused the 1,400 billion-won property damage including sweeping and flooding of 127 roads and 65 rivers, respectively. There are needs to minimize the damages for important structures for repeated heavy rainfalls every year and, especially, because debris flow might be a main cause of road damage, the design criteria and guideline for roads are required to be improved. Therefore, this paper presented design method of debris-flow control structure for road protection.

Preparation and Characterization of CdTe Quantum Dots (CdTe 양자점 합성과 물리적 특성 분석)

  • CdTe quantum dots(QDs) were synthesized in aqueous solution by colloidal method. The synthesized CdTe QDs were identified to be cubic-structured ones by x-ray diffraction(XRD). The photoluminescence(PL) was performed for CdTe QDs prepared as a function of Te precursor concentration, condensation time and aging time. The PL intensity is strongly dependent on Te precursor concentration, indicating that the ratio of Te to Cd ions affects the particle size and size distribution of the CdTe QDs. Our PL study reveals that the intensity of PL peaks strengthens as the condensation time elongates, implying that annealing by thermal energy transferred during condensation would eliminate defects which act as killing centers in CdTe particles. Our photocurrent study suggests that the CdTe QDs materials are one of the prospective materials for optoelectronics including photodetectors.

  • 1). To find the effective insecticides and its timing for the control of the bamboo-shoot cutworm, Bambusiphila vulgaris BUTLE R, this experiment was carried out at Tam-Yang in Chula-namdo from May to June in 1963 in Korea. 2). Endrin, Folidol, and Diazinon were more effective than sumithion, Aldrin, and EPN. .B). The best timing of insecticidal spraying was in 5 days after hatching front the eggs. 4). Since this experiment is the result only tried just once, I hope that the same experiment should be repeated several times and consequently effective of killing insects and the best timing for sprinkling insecticides should be also Investigated.

Influence of Acetylation on the Antimicrobial Properties of Chitosan Non-Woven Fabrics

  • Chitosan non-woven fabrics were acetylated to improve their antimicrobial properties. The active chlorine content, antimicrobial properties, storage stability, and surface properties of acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were investigated. The active chlorine content of the fabrics increased upon reduction of the degree of the acetylation or increase in sodium hypochlorite concentration. Acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics showed powerful antimicrobial activity by efficiently killing Escherichia coli and forming a growth inhibition zone for Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy observations demonstrated that the acetylated chitosan non-woven fabrics were not damaged in sodium hypochlorite solution.

  • This study was performed to isolated woild killer yeasts which might suppress the growth of contaminant yeasts during wine making. Seventeen strains of killer yeasts which were isolated from grapes in Korea showed different killing activity; higher with K109 and K112. and lower with K117 strain. There was no inhibition among the isolates by cross-reaction. Through the physiological, morphological and cultural test, the isolates were identified as a new killer yeast, Cadida dattila, and then named Candida dattila K101-K117.

  • 자유수산기는 단분자 제조공정으로 분자, 원자 충에서 가공되어 기타 활성입자와 함께 얻어지며, 20% 이상의 고 밀도 질량비는 양산공정에 중요한 의미를 부여한다. 자유수산기가 선박안정수의 외래침입생물과 적조처리 및 양식수체 정화에도 효과적인 새로운 처리기술로 선박 안정수에 포함되어 타 지역으로부터 옮겨지는 외래침입생물 처리 방안의 하나로, 강 전리방전 기술을 적용하여 고 밀집산소와 물분자로부터 고농도 수산자유기(OH: hydroxyl radical)를 전리, 발생시켜서 활성입자를 신속히 확산시켜 비교적 낮은 수산기농도 하에서 유해성침입생물을 사멸 처리하는 환경 친화적 녹색 청정처리방법을 제안하였다.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of concentration and temperature on the bactericidal action of sodium hypochlorite by means of comparing the killing time of several kinds of microorganism on each different concentration and temperature of sodium hypochlorite. The results were as follows: 1. As the concentration of sodium hypochlorite was increased, the bactericidal action of sodium hypochlorite was increased in all specimens. 2. The bactericidal action of sodium hypochlorite at $37^{\circ}C$ was more potent than that of sodium hypochlorite at $21^{\circ}C$. 3. Among the 3 experimental microorganisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most resistant to sodium hypochlorite, then comes staphylococcus aureus, and the least resistant microorganism was Streptococcus mutans.

  • The environmentally benign inorganic bacterioide was developed by using waste shell as a matrix and its efficacies against various bacteria were examined in this investigation. The inorganic bacteriocide inhibited strongly the growths of various bacteria such as S. aureus and E.coli. The inorganic bacteriocide also showed strong killing effect on the growth of P.acnes which causes the acne on human face. Moreover, this bacteriocide inhibited the activity of lipoxygenase prominently, indicating notable anti-inflammatory activity of the bacteriocide.

  • Conventional ultraviolets A,B,C are known to be very important factor of killing, changing surface properties of biological cells and materials. It is of great importance to investigate the influence of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) exposure on the biological cell. Here we have studied high density EUV plasma and its emission characteristics, which have been generated by plasma focus device with hypercycloidal pinch (HCP) electrode under various Ar gas pressures ranged from 30~500 mTorr in this experiment. We have also measured the plasma characteristics generated from the HCP plasma focus device such as electron temperature by the Boltzman plot, plasma density by the Stark broading method, discharge images by open-shuttered pin hole camera, and EUV emission signals by using the photodiode AXUV-100 Zr/C.
