Comparision of Blood Gas Analyser, pH Meter and pH Strip Methods in the Measurement of Pleural Fluid pH (흉수의 pH 측정에서 혈액가스분석기계, pH meter, pH Strip 방법의 비교)

  • Background : pH measurement is an important test in assessing the etiology of pleurisy and in identifying complicated parapneumonic effusion. Although the blood gas analyzer is the gold standard method' for pleural pH measurement, pH meter & pH strip methods are also used for this purpose interchangably. However, the correlation among the pH data measured by the three different methods needs to be evaluated. In this study, we measured the pH of pleural fluid with the three different methods respectively and evaluated the correlation among the measured data. Methods : From August 1999 to March 2000, we measured the pleural fluid pH in 34 clinical samples with three methods-blood gas analyzer, pH meter, and pH strip. In the blood gas analyzer and pH meter methods, the temperature of pleural fluid was maintained around $0^{\circ}C$ in air-tight condition before analysis and measurement was performed within 30 minutes after collection. As for the pH strip method, the pleural fluid pH was checked in the ward immediately after tapping and in the clinical laboratory of our hospital. This part is unclear. Results : The causes of pleural effusion were tuberculosis pleurisy in 16 cases, malignant pleural effusion 5 cases, parapneumonic effusion 9 cases, empyema 3 cases, and congestive heart failure 1 case. The pH of pleural fluid (mean$\pm$SD) was 7.34$\pm$0.12 with blood gas analyser, 7.52$\pm$0.25 with pH meter, 7.37$\pm$0.16 with pH strip of immediate measurement and 6.93$\pm$0.201 with pH strip of delayed measurement. The pH measured by delayed pH strip measurement was lower than those of other methods (p<0.05). The correlation of the results between the blood gas analyzer and pH meter(p=0.002, r=0.518) and the blood gas analyzer and pH strip of immediate measurement(p<0.001, r=0.607). Conclusion : In the determination of pH of pleural fluid, pH strip method could be a simple and reliable method under immediate measurement conditions after pleural fluid tapping.

The effects of breed and gender on meat quality of Duroc, Pietrain, and their crossbred

  • This study evaluated the effects of breed and gender in Duroc (D), Pietrain (P), and crossbred (DP) pigs. Loin samples were collected from D (n = 79), P (n = 42), and DP (n = 45) pigs. Intramuscular fat content was significantly lower in P (p < 0.001), and pH was lowest in DP pigs (p < 0.001). Gilts had higher intramuscular fat (IMF) and pH values than did castrated males (p < 0.05). Water-holding capacity was lower in DP pigs than that in D and P pigs (p < 0.001). Shear force in DP pigs was higher than that in D and P pigs (p < 0.001). Lightness and yellowness of meat in DP pigs was increased compared with coloring of P pig meat (p < 0.01). Meat from DP pigs was redder compared with meat from in D and P pigs, and it was higher in gilts than in castrates (p < 0.001). The C16:0 content was lower in P and DP pigs than in D pigs (p < 0.01). C18:2 content was higher in P and DP pigs than in D pigs (p < 0.001). Unsaturated and saturated fatty acids increased in P pigs compared with levels in D pigs (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that meat quality can be controlled by crossbreeding to increase or reduce selected properties. This study provides the basic data on the meat characteristics of F1 DP pigs. Thus, further study should be conducted to estimate the meat quality of various crossbreeds.

  • We Study, firstly, the dynamics of the difference equation $x_{n+1}\;=\;{\alpha}\;+\;{\frac{x^p_n}{x^p_{n-1}}}$, with $p\;{\in}\;(0,\;1)\;and\;{\alpha}\;{\in}\;[0,\;{\infty})$. Then, we generalize our results to the (k + 1)th order difference equation $x_{n+1}\;=\;{\alpha}\;+\;{\frac{x^p_n}{nx^p_{n-k}}$, $k\;=\;2,\;3,\;{\cdots}$ with positive initial conditions.

  • The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor$p27^{kip1}$(p27) has been implicated in the regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis. Recently, we have demonstrated that ceramide induces apoptotic cell death associated with increase in the level of p27 in HL-60 cells. In the present study, we showed that overexpression of p27 increases ceramide-induced apoptotic cell death in HL-60 cells. Furthermore, overexpression of p27 accelerated DNA fragmentation, PARP cleavage and cytochrome c release induced by ceramide. In addition, ceramide induced Sax expression independent of p27. These findings indicate that enhanced effect on apoptosis by p27 is associated with mitochondrial signaling which involves cytochrome c release.

  • The transform domain characterization of cyclic codes over finite fields using Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) over an appropriate extension field is well known. In this paper, we extend this transform domain characterization for cyclic codes over $F_p + uF_p +... + u^{k-l}F_p$. We give a way to characterize cyclic codes over $F_p + uF_p +... + u^{k-l}F_p$ by Mattson-Solomon polynomials and multiple defining sets.

  • The object of the present paper is to investigate the starlikeness of the class of functions $f(z)=z^p+{\sum\limits_{k=n}^{\infty}}a_p+k^{z^{p^{+k}}} (p,n{\in}{\mathbb{N}}=\{1,2,{\ldots}\})$ which are analytic and p-valent in the unit disc U and satisfy the condition $\|(1-{\lambda}({\frac{f(z)}{z^p}})^{\alpha}+{\lambda}{\frac{zf^{\prime}(z)}{pf(z)}}({\frac{f(z)}{z^p}})^{\alpha}-1\|$ < ${\mu}$ (0 < ${\mu}{\leq}1$, ${\lambda}{\geq}0$, ${\alpha}$ > 0, $z{\in}U$). The starlikeness of certain integral operator are also discussed. The results obtained generalize the related works of some authors and some other new results are also obtained.

  • An additive regular Semiring S is left inversive if the Set E+ (S) of all additive idempotents is left regular. The set LC(S) of all left inversive semiring congruences on an additive regular semiring S is a lattice. The relations $\theta$ and k (resp.), induced by tr. and ker (resp.), are congruences on LC(S) and each $\theta$-class p$\theta$ (resp. each k-class pk) is a complete modular sublattice with $p_{min}$ and $p_{max}$ (resp. With $p^{min}$ and $p^{max}$), as the least and greatest elements. $p_{min},\;p_{max},\;p^{min}$ and $p^{max}$, in particular ${\epsilon}_{max}$, the maximum additive idempotent separating congruence has been characterized explicitly.   • This research was carried out to elucidate the impacts of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration to phosphorus release mechanism from soil into water in lakes. $PO_4-P$ contributed to the growth of the total phosphorus (T-P). $PO_4-P$ was steadily increasing because water was accumulating $PO_4-P$. T-P was closely related to turbidity, pH, and DO. We found that DO had decreased because DO was consumed in organic matter decomposition, and that the resulting anaerobic decomposition occurred whenever water had run out of DO. We also found that pH had decreased sharply by production of organic acid by the anaerobic decomposition and that T-P decreased because a decrease in pH removed turbidity by precipitation. T-P was dissolved without microbial decomposition. This mechanism was of great importance in lakes because phosphorus is released from soil into water.

  • The frontier electron densities and pK values for benzologous pyridine ligands are calculated using the HMO. Linear regression formula for pK in protonation of ligands is derived from the electron densities and observed pK values. The calculated pK values are in agreement with those of experimental values and a parallelism is shown between pK and qN. The reactivities for electrophilic, nucleophilic and radical reactions have also been calculated respectively by frontier electron densities.

  • Propolis extract was added to white bread(P1-1.48%, P2-0.74%, P3-0.37%), prepared in the straight-dough method, and its effects on shelf-life, antimicrobial activity, staling and sensory evaluation of white bread were investigated. In all P1, P2 samples, added propolis inhibited the growth of fungi, and the more propolis extract was added, the higher degree of inhibition of fungal growth was observed. The staling rates of white breads with P1, P2 and P3 were retarded by 22.5%, 19.2% and 6.4% respectively compared to that of control, and the Avrami exponent was similar in all samples. As a result of sensory evaluation, flavor, off-flavor, texture and overall acceptability of P2 and P3 were not significantly different from that of control.
