  • [ $La_2Zr_2O_7$] (LZO) buffer layers were deposited on biaxially textured Ni-W substrates by chemical solution deposition method (CSD). In this study, the effect of $B_2O_3$ addition on texture and surface roughness of LZO films was investigated. The alkoxide-based precursor solution was employed to synthesize the precursor solution of LZO and the solution was coated on biaxially textured Ni-W substrates and subsequently annealed at $900^{\circ}C$ for crystallization. The pure LZO film without $B_2O_3$ addition showed a (222) reflection in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile. The intensity of (222) reflection was enhanced and more rough surface was obtained after further repetition of coating. Contrary to this, the LZO film prepared by $B_2O_3$ added precursor solution shows well-developed (400) reflection peak in the XRD profile and excellent biaxial texture (${\Delta}{\theta}=4.3^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}{\phi}=6.8^{\circ}$). The surface roughness of LZO films were also improved by addition of $B_2O_3$ even after multicoating ($R_{rms}{\sim}3.1nm$). It was shown that the LZO film with smooth surface and biaxial texture was grown on the biaxially textured Ni-W substrates with addition of $B_2O_3$ in the precursor solution.

  • In the 21st century, fashion films are frequently used throughout the fashion industry. In particular, as videos have become an essential element and a communication tool of social media, they are becoming even more important in the world of fashion. In this study, different types of short-length fashion films (< 0:60) in current use were derived, and the effects of on the cognitive and emotional responses of users were analyzed using electroencephalogram(EEG) findings. EEG measurements were performed using Epoc+ on 31 healthy women aged 20-29 years after viewing six types of fashion films[fiction/well-made, fiction/user generated content(UGC), documentary/well-made, documentary/UGC, art/well-made, and art/UGC] in random order. The results demonstrate differences among four types of films. Specifically, alpha waves in the frontal lobe decreased more while watching documentary/UGC films than while watching art/well-made films. Gamma waves in the temporal lobe decreased more while watching fiction/well-made films than while watching documentary/UGC films. Furthermore, theta waves in the occipital lobe increased more while watching fiction/well-made films than while watching art/UGC films. These findings suggest that different types of fashion films can stimulate different parts of the brain that process thinking, cognition, emotion, and visual and auditory information and consequently evoke emotional responses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback training for emotion regulation and brain homeostasis on anxiety about COVID-19 infection, impulsivity, anger rumination, meta-mood, and self-regulation ability of late adolescents in the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic situation. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants included 55 late adolescents in the experimental and control groups. The variables were evaluated using quantitative EEG at pre-post time points in the experimental group. The experimental groups received 10 sessions using the three-band protocol for five weeks. The collected data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, t-test and paired t-test using the SAS 9.3 program. The collected EEG data used a frequency series power spectrum analysis method through fast Fourier transform. Results: Significant differences in emotion regulation between the two groups were observed in the anxiety about COVID-19 infection (W = 585.50, p = .002), mood repair of meta-mood (W = 889.50, p = .024), self-regulation ability (t = - 5.02, p < .001), self-regulation mode (t = - 4.74, p < .001), and volitional inhibition mode (t = - 2.61, p = .012). Neurofeedback training for brain homeostasis was effected on enhanced sensory-motor rhythm (S = 177.00, p < .001) and inhibited theta (S = - 166.00, p < .001). Conclusion: The results demonstrate the potential of EEG biofeedback training as an independent nursing intervention that can markedly improve anxiety, mood-repair, and self-regulation ability for emotional distress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of functional bedding of ceravida recovery materials on muscle fatigue, brain waves, and heat in the cervical spine before and after sleep. The subjects of the study were 12 women in their 50s or older in D Metropolitan City who complained of insomnia due to sleep disorders and cervical pain. The results of this study first showed that functional bedding lowered muscle tension. Second, the skin temperature of cervical spine increased statistically significantly for both functional and general bedding. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in EEG(alpha, beta, theta, delta) of functional bedding. Through these results, it is considered that functional bedding of ceravida recovery material has sufficient effect on sleep recovery technology.

  • This study investigated the effects of continuous Singing Bowl healing on brainwaves and autonomic nervous system responses. The variations in brainwaves were measured during 45-minute sessions in eight participants, before and after Singing Bowl healing sessions to assess the changes in brainwaves before and after five weeks of Singing Bowl healing treatment. BioBrain BIOS-S8 was used to obtain brainwave measurements. Electrodes were placed on six channels: F3, F4, T3, T4, P3, and P4. A standard limb lead I with electrodes was used for electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements. Using the collected brainwave data, changes in brain waves were observed before and after five weeks of Singing Bowl healing. Beta waves, alpha waves, and sensorimotor rhythm were found to have reduced, while theta waves, delta waves, and the standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals in heart rate variability had increased. These results indicate that continuous Singing Bowl healing over five weeks can stabilize brainwaves, activate the autonomic nervous system, and increase the relaxation-inducing effects of the parasympathetic nervous system.

  • Walking can have a positive impact on cognitive function in adolescents. This study aimed to compare the effects of walking with sneakers and barefoot on cognitive ability in adolescents. Fifty-nine adolescent male students were included in the study and assigned to the control (n = 20), sneaker (n = 19), and barefoot (n = 20) groups. The barefoot and sneakers group performed a 40-min walking exercise four times a week for 12 weeks during the morning physical activity time, while the control group performed self-study. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and brain activity variables were measured before and after the exercise program. The results showed that after 12 weeks, the barefoot group had a significant decrease in Gamma and H-beta waves and a significant increase in sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) and Alpha waves. Conversely, the control group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves and increase in Theta waves. The sneaker group showed a significant decrease in SMR waves alone. In an eyes-open resting state, the barefoot group showed a significant increase in H-beta, M-beta, SMR, and Alpha waves. The barefoot group also had a significant increase in cognitive speed and concentration and a significant decrease in brain stress. Taken together, barefoot walking can effectively enhance cognitive ability in adolescents, as demonstrated by the significant variation in EEG activity. This research highlights the potential benefits of barefoot walking as a simple and effective form of exercise for enhancing cognitive function in adolescents.

  • The tumor microenvironment (TME) is formed by several immune cells. Notably, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are existed in the TME that induce angiogenesis, metastasis, and proliferation of cancer cells. Recently, a point-mutated variant of IL-32θ was discovered in breast cancer tissues, which suppressed migration and proliferation through intracellular pathways. Although the relationship between cancer and IL-32 has been previously studied, the effects of IL-32θ on TAMs remain elusive. Recombinant human IL-32θ (rhIL-32θ) was generated using an Escherichia coli expression system. To induce M0 macrophage polarization, THP-1 cells were stimulated with PMA. After PMA treatment, the cells were cultured with IL-4 and IL-13, or rhIL-32θ. The mRNA level of M1 macrophage markers (IL-1β, TNFα, inducible nitric oxide synthase) were increased by rhIL-32θ in M0 macrophages. On the other hand, the M2 macrophage markers (CCL17, CCL22, TGFβ, CD206) were decreased by rhIL-32θ in M2 macrophages. rhIL-32θ induced nuclear translocation of the NF-κB via regulation of the MAPK (p38) pathway. In conclusion, point-mutated rhIL-32θ induced the polarization to M1-like macrophages through the MAPK (p38) and NF-κB (p65/p50) pathways.

  • Background and Purpose: The effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) interventions on functional brain changes in older adults remain unclear. This preliminary study aimed to explore the effect of physical exercise intervention (PEI), including HIIT, on cognitive function, physical performance, and electroencephalogram patterns in Korean elderly people. Methods: We enrolled six non-dementia participants aged >65 years from a community health center. PEI was conducted at the community health center for 4 weeks, three times/week, and 50 min/day. PEI, including HIIT, involved aerobic exercise, resistance training (muscle strength), flexibility, and balance. Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for data analysis. Results: After the PEI, there was improvement in the 30-second sit-to-stand test result (16.2±7.0 times vs. 24.8±5.5 times, p=0.027), 2-minute stationary march result (98.3±27.2 times vs. 143.7±36.9 times, p=0.027), T-wall response time (104.2±55.8 seconds vs.71.0±19.4 seconds, p=0.028), memory score (89.6±21.6 vs. 111.0±19.1, p=0.028), executive function score (33.3±5.3 vs. 37.0±5.1, p=0.046), and total Literacy Independent Cognitive Assessment score (214.6±30.6 vs. 241.6±22.8, p=0.028). Electroencephalography demonstrated that the beta power in the frontal region was increased, while the theta power in the temporal region was decreased (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Our HIIT PEI program effectively improved cognitive function, physical fitness, and electroencephalographic markers in elderly individuals; thus, it could be beneficial for improving functional brain activity in this population.

  • The presence of transition metals V, Cr or Mn in a 55%Al-Zn based coating metal can modify the equilibrium intermetallic phase, τ5c, by diffusion of transition metals and substituting for iron in the τ5c phase. We experimentally confirmed the modification of the IMC phase using various analytical techniques to characterize IMC phases. Experimental results confirmed the formation of a modified τ5c-Al20(Fe,V)5Si2(+Zn) intermetallic phase. The modified IMC phase showed periodic repeating layers with varying concentrations of V while still maintaining a constant (Fe+V)/Fe ratio within the homogeneity range of Fe in the equilibrium IMC phase. We proposed a reaction-diffusion mechanism for forming a modified IMC phase and a periodic layered structure. The initial reaction of the steel strip resulted in the formation of Fe4Al13 IMC phase. Al, Si, and Zn diffused and reacted with Fe4Al13 to form the equilibrium bcc phase, τ5c. The Fe4Al13 phase was consumed in the reaction, followed by diffusion of V into the newly formed phase by substitution of Fe by V, resulting in formation of the modified IMC phase. At 600 ℃, the τ5c phase could dissolve up to 4.13 wt% (2.73 at.%) V without changing its overall bcc crystal structure.

  • The sympathetic nerve block improves the blood flow in the innervated regions. For this region, the sympathetic nerve block has been performed in the neural and cerebral disorders. However, the cerebral blood flow regulation of the cranial cervical ganglion block in dogs have not been well defined and the correlation to the changes in the cerebral circulation and the changes in the electroencephalogram is not well defined in dogs yet. Therefore, we investigated the hypothesis that changes in the EEG could be affected by the changes in cerebral blood flow following the cranial cervical ganglion block in dogs. Twenty five beagle dogs were divided into 3 groups; group I(LCCGB, n=10) underwent left sided cranial cervical ganglion block using the 1% lidocaine, group II(L, n=10) injected the 1% lidocaine into the right or left sided digastricus muscle, group III(N/SCCGB, n=5, served as control) underwent the left sided cranial cervical ganglion block using saline. A statistical difference was not found between the control group and the LCCGB group in the 95% spectral edge frequency(SEF) and the median frequency(MF). In the relative band power, the $\delta$ frequency was decreased during 5-25 min, while the $\alpha$ frequency was increased during the same time(p<0.05). But the $\theta$ frequency and the $\beta$ frequency were not shown the significant changes compared with the control group during the same time(p<0.05). These results suggest that the left cranial cervical ganglion block does not induce the change of the cerebral blood flow and its effect is insignificant.
