  • Al-8Fe-2Mo-2V-1Zr alloys were prepared by the gas atomization/hot extrusion and the melt spinning/hot extrusion. For the gas atomized and extruded alloy, equiaxed grains with the average size of 400 nm and finely distributed dispersoids with their particle sizes ranging from 50nm to 200nm were observed. For the melt spun and hot extrusion processed alloy, refined microstructural feature consisting of equiaxed grains with the average size of 200nm and fine dispersoids with their particle sizes under 50nm appeared to exhibit a difference in microstructure. Strength of the latter alloy was higher than that for the former alloy up to elevated temperatures.

  • Drug release from sulfanilamide granules coated with a polyelectrlyte complex of sodium tripolyphosphate and chitosan was studied. The coating film thickness increased with increasing concentration of chitosan in the coating solution and the drug release rates of the coated granules were significantly reduced comparing with those of the uncoated granules. $T_{50%}$ of the uncoated granules was 6 minutes, but those of the granules coated with chitosan-sodium tripolyphosphate from 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9% (w/v) chitosan-HCl solution were 27, 135, and 180 minutes, respectively in distilled water. In dissolution medium at pH 6.8, $T_{50%}$ of the uncoated granules was 4 minutes, but those of the granules coated with chitosan-sodium tripolyphosphate from 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9(w/v)% chitosan-HCl solution, were 32, 135, and 160 minutes, respectively.

  • Tablet product design problem was structured as constrained optimization problem and subsequently solved by multiple regression analysis and Lagrangian method of optimization. Aluminum flufenamate was the drug chosen and microcrystalline cellulose nad starch were the binder and disintegrant, respectivley. The effect of the binder and disintegrant concentration on tablet hardness, friability, volume, in vitro release rate, and urinary excretion rate of drug in human subjects was recorded. Since a reasonably rapid release rate of drug is generally an important objective in the design of solid dosage form, optimization of this parameter was employed in studying the applicability of constrained optimization to a pharmaceutical product design problem. In addition to finding optimal sitivity analysis studies to such problems was also illustratd. It would appear that prediction of the in vivo t$_{50%}$ response from a knowledge of the incitro t$_{50%}$ response can be made fairly accurately for the tablet system used in this study.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with methacrylate endgroup is used as contact lens material with elasticity and high oxygen permeability. PDMS prepolymer with methacrylate endgroup was prepared by reacting PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) with HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The HEMA-substituted PDMS prepolymer was then copolymerized using AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) with BMA (butyl methacrylate; to increase elasticity and flexibility). The water content, oxygen permeability, and visible-ray transmissibility of the resulting polymer were measured to be 23%, 83% and Dk/t > 50, indicating that the copolymer can be used as a good contact lens material.

  • Hydrolysates of Trianthema portulacastrum in acidified methanol were evaluated for their total phenolic (TP) constituents and respective antioxidant activities using in vitro assays (i.e., 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, percent inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation, and ferric reducing power). The observed results indicate that root, shoot, and leaf fractions of T. portulacastrum contain 50.75~98.09 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry weight of TP. In addition, these fractions have substantial reducing potentials (0.10~0.59), abilities to inhibit peroxidation (43.26~89.98%), and DPPH radical scavenging capabilities ($6.98{\sim}311.61{\mu}g/mL$ $IC_{50}$). The experimental data not only reveal T. portulacastrum as potential source of valuable antioxidants, but also indicate that acidified methanol may be an ideal choice for the enhanced recovery of phenolic compounds with retained biological potential for the food and pharmaceutical industry.

  • The measurement of magnetic field is performed about DC and AC magnetic field in test track of depot. The test point is cap, on the converter/inverter box, on the traction motor, on the APSE and on the line filter, the height of measurement is bottom and 50 cm height. In case of AC magnetic field, the selected specific frequency is measured on the converter/inverter box. The AC magnetic field is checked and analysis through RS-232C and notebook PC. The DC magnetic field is measured by using the Hall Probe, test result is saved and analysis by PXI system. On the line filter, the maximum value is 1.4 mT in case of DC magnetic field and 0.044 mT in case of AC magnetic field at 50 Hz.

  • Shielding effects in conductive and magnetic materials were investigated as a function of properties, thickness and diameter. In this work, evaluations on passive conductive and magnetic shield specimens were achieved through experimentation set-up using 50 Hz single and three phase induction field sources. Analysis on material microstructure properties and characteristics of shielding specimens were performed with the use of vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). An induction field at $136{\mu}T$ of single phase system and $50{\mu}T$ of three phase systems were observed to the shield specimens with the thickness ranged of 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. It is observed that shield specimen efficiency becomes inversely proportionate to the increment of induction fields. The decrease was attributed to the surface structure texture which relates to the crystallization and non-crystallization geometrical effects.

  • The Périgord black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) is an edible fungus and among the most expensive foods worldwide. It is the basis of a multimillion-dollar bio-business. Truffle farming does not exist in Mexico, and no formal studies have been conducted on its culture. This report describes the mycorrhizal synthesis (i.e., artificial union of fungus with host) of T. melanosporum with oak species native to Mexico (Quercus polymorpha, Q. fusiformis, and Q. canbyi). The mycorrhizal association was successful in Q. polymorpha and Q. fusiformis, as confirmed morphologically and using T. melanosporum molecular primers (ITSML/ITS4LNG). The effect of the ectomycorrhizal fungus on host growth (stem diameter) was statistically significant. Illustrations of the study are presented.

  • This paper describes the sensitive cooling performance change of J-T refrigerator for cryosurgical probe due to its working fluid. The analytical results of using 50 bar nitrous oxide are compared with the case of 300 bar argon. Bio-heat equation is numerically solved to investigate the effect of the probe temperature and the cooling power of the J-T refrigerator. The refrigerator using 50 bar nitrous oxide has larger cooling power above 185 K than the one with 300 bar argon, which enables fast cooling at early stage of cryosurgery, but the biological tissue away from the probe tends to be cooled slowly after the probe reaches its lowest operating temperature. When the repeated freeze-thaw cycle is employed for main tissue destruction mechanism, using high pressure nitrous oxide is more advantageous than argon if the freezing operation is within 2-3 minutes. The probe with high pressure argon is more suitable for the case of longer freeze-thaw cycle with fewer repetitions.
