The effect of Sm2O3 doping on the microstructure and electrical properties of the ZPCCA-based varistors is comprehensively investigated. The increase of doping content of Sm2O3 results in better densification (from 5.70 to 5.82 g/cm3) and smaller mean grain size (from 7.8 to 4.1 ㎛). The breakdown electric field increases significantly from 2568 to 6800 V/cm as the doping content of Sm2O3 increases. The doping of Sm2O3 remarkably improves the nonlinear properties (increasing from 23.9 to 91 in the nonlinear coefficient and decreasing from 35.2 to 0.2 µA/cm2 in the leakage current density). Meanwhile, the doping of Sm2O3 reduces the donor concentration (the range of 2.73 × 1018 to 1.18 × 1018 cm-3) of bulk grain and increases the barrier height (the range of 1.10 to 1.49 eV) at the grain boundary. The density of the interface states decreases in the range of of 5.31 × 1012 to 4.08 × 1012 cm-2 with the increase of doping content of Sm2O3. The dielectric constant decreases from 1594.8 to 507.5 with the increase of doping content of Sm2O3.
Thin films of Bi4-xSmxTi3O12(0$\leq$x$\leq$2) were prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) at $700^{\circ}C$ using spin-coating with sols derived from Bi-Sm-Ti complex alkoxides. From X-ray diffraction analysis, it was observed that Sm-substituted phases resembled ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 in structure. Variations of their lattice parameters depending on the amount of Sm-substitution showed that an anomalous structural distortion might exist at x=1. The grain sizes of the thin films decreased from 0.115 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 0.078${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with increasing the amount of Sm-substitution. The dielectric constants and the remanent polarizations of the thin films decreased with increasing the amount of the Sm-substitution, which were related to decrease of the stereo-active Bi3+ ion contributing to polarization. However, these values were exceptionally high at x=1, compared to those of the other substituted phases. Such an anomaly suggests that the phase of x=1 has 1:1 chemical ordering between Sm and Bi in structure. The thin films of all compositions except x=2 showed ferroelectricity. The thin film of x=2 was paraelectric, whose grains were too fine to exhibit ferroelectricity.
The influence of $O_2$partial presure on saturation magnetization, coercivity and effective permeability(0.5~100MHz) of as-deposited Fe-Sm-O thin films, which were fabricated by RF magnetron reactive sputtering method, were investigated. The nanocrystalline Fe(sub)83.4Sm(sub)3.4O(sub)13.2 thin film fabricated at $O_2$partial pressure of 5% exhibits the best magnetic softness with saturation magnetization of 18kG, coercivity of 0.82 Oe and effective permeability about 2,600 at 0.5~100MHz. $\alpha$-Fe grain size is decreased with increasing $O_2$partial pressure. In case of $O_2$partial pressure of 10%, it is observed that FeO compound is formed and soft magnetic properties are decreased. The electrical resistivity of Fe-Sm-O thin films were increased with increasing $O_2$partial pressure, the electrical resistivity of Fe(sub)83.4Sm(sub)3.4O(sub)13.2 thin film with the best soft magnetic properties was 130 $\mu$$\Omega$cm. Therefore, It is assumed that the good soft magnetic properties of Fe(sub)83.4Sm(sub)3.4O(sub)13.2 thin film results from high electrical resistivity and decreasing $\alpha$-Fe grain size due to precipitation of Sm-Oxide phase.
Phase relation and microwave dielectric properties of the system BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.TiO2 (n=4, 5) were studied. With n=5 (1 : 1 : 5), Ba2Ti9O20 and TiO2 formed in case of X$\leq$0.7, and Ba2Ti9O20 and Sm2Ti2O7 formed at X=1.0 as the second phases dispersed in fine-grained orthorhombic matrix phase. With n=4 (1 : 1 : 4). on the contrary, only fine grains of an ortho-rhombic phase were observed irrespective of Nd/Sm ratio. The compositions of these two stable orthorombic phases having distinct lattic constants even with the same Nd/Sm ratio were estimated as 4BaO.5(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.18TiO2 and BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.4TiO2 with n=5 and n=4 in the system BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.TiO2, respectively. Consequently the composition BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.5TiO2 lies in the compatible triangle of 4BaO.5(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.18TiO2 and the second phases mentioned above. The microwave dielectric properties (~4 GHz) of BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.5TiO2 can be controlled effectively by adjusting Sm content : with increasing X from 0 to 0.7, both dielectric constant and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency decreased monotonically from 82 to 65 and from 91 (ppm/$^{\circ}C$) to -19(ppm/$^{\circ}C$), respectively, while unloaded Q(Qo) remained constant at about 2,600.

The polycrystalline superconductor $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ is fabricated, and intergranular magnetic properties are investigated using the critical state model, from which some useful parameters such as the critical current density and the intergranular volume fraction are obtained. The curve fitting for M-H hysteresis loop shows that the intergranular critical current density of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / decreases in the form of ($1-T/T_{c}$ )$^{1.5}$ . The intergranular volume fraction is influenced by granular morphology. From SEM image, the grains of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ are found to be randomly shaped. This mean:; that the intergranular volume fraction of $SmBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{x}$ / should be smaller than those of superconductors, of which grains are plate-shaped such as Tl-based superconductor.
The oxygen flux of SDC ($Sm_2O_3\;doped\;CeO_2$) solid electrolyte membranes with electronic and oxygen ion-ic conductivities has been investigated as a basic research in order to develop the conversion process of na-tural gas to syngas using the ceramic membrane reactor. Tube type membranes(1 mm thickness) were fa-bricated by slip casting of SDC powders prepared by the oxalate coprecipitaion method. Dense oxygen per-meation membranes(0.1 mm thickness) could be synthesized via sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 2h and their re-lative density was over 95% The oxygen flux through SDC membranes doped 20mol% $Sm_15$ was about $1.13{\times}10^{-5}\;mol/m_2{\cdot}sec$ at low temperature around $800^{\circ}C$. In addition the SDC membranes showed a good thermaal stability for a long period of service.

Nanocrystalline $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were prepared by solvothermal reaction method for light emitting diode (LED) and field emission display (FED) applications. The XRD patterns of these phosphors confirmed their oxyapatite structure in the hexagonal lattice. The visible luminescence properties of these phosphors were investigated by exciting with ultraviolet (UV) or near-UV light and low voltage electron beam. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of $Ca_2Gd_8Si_6O_{26}$ (CGS) : $Sm^{3+}$ and CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphors were investigated as a function of $Sm^{3+}$ concentration. Cathodoluminescence (CL) properties were examined by changing the acceleration voltage. The CGS : $Sm^{3+}$ showed the dominant orange emission due to the $^4G_{5/2}{\rightarrow}^6H_{7/2}$ transition. The CGS : $Tb^{3+}/Sm^{3+}$ phosphor showed the green, white and orange emissions when excited with 275, 378, and 405 nm wavelengths, respectively. The chromaticity coordinates of these phosphors were comparable to or better than those of standard phosphors for LED or FED devices.

Sintering behavior and electrical properties of CeO$_2$ system were investigated as a function of the amount of Gd:$_2$O$_3$, and Sm$_2$O$_3$, addition. Doped CeO$_2$ consisted of a homogeneous solid solution of the cubic fluorite structure within the amount of addition from 0 mol% to 15 mol%. Grain growth rate of Gd$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ was much smaller than that of pure CeO$_2$, while densification rate was considerably larger. Thus doped CeO$_2$ showed a higher density than pure CeO$_2$. The electrical conductivity of Ce$_1$-$_{x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_1$-$_{x}$/2 was increased up to x = 0.2. However, with further increasing dopant concentrations, the magnitude of the conductivity was found to decrease remarkably. The ionic conductivity value obtained at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 mol% Sm$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ electrolyte was 4.6${\times}$10$^{-2}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ /.EX> /.

Melting and re-solidification nature of $SmBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Sm123) grains in Ba-Cu-O (Ba:Cu=3:5) liquid containing 0.7 at.% yttrium were investigated at the temperature lower than its melt point. When Sm123 grains/liquid powder compacts were heated to a temperature between two melting points of Ba-Cu-O liquid ($1000^{\circ}C$) and a Sm123 phase ($1060^{\circ}C$) and held at this temperature for appropriate time, Sm123 grains melted partly in the liquid that was formed by melting of the liquid-forming powder. During subsequent slow cooling, (Sm,Y)$Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ solidified at the outer parts of the unmelted Sm12 grains, which is distinguished from the core regions by lower $Sm_2BaCuO_5$ (211) density.

(Sm/Y)$_{1.8}$B $a_{2.4}$C $u_{3.4}$$O_{7-x}$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] high $T_{c}$ superconductors were directionally grown by Rod-type Seed Melt Growth(RSMG) process in air atmosphere. The sintered polycrystalline N $d_{1.8}$B $a_{2.4}$C $u_{3.4}$$O_{7-x}$(Nd1.8) of rod-type seed crystal grown by extrusion mold process were used for achieving the ab-plane alignment haying large grains perpendicular to the center of (Sm/Y)1.8 samples. The observations using TEM micrographs of the melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 samples revealed that the nonsuperconducting (Sm/Y)211 inclusions are uniformly distributed in the superconducting (Sm/Y)123 matrix. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The RSMG (Sm/Y)1.8 samples showed an onset $T_{c}$$\geq$ 90 K and sharp superconducting transition.nsition.ion.nsition.
