Characteristic Analysis of Chemical Compositions for Ancient Glasses Excavated from the Sarira Hole of Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda, Iksan (익산 미륵사지 석탑 사리공 내 출토 고대 유리 유물의 성분특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics, correlations, and colorant materials of those using the chemical compositions of 30 glasses excavated from the Sarari hall of the Mireuksaji stone pagoda, and to determine the correlations between them and other glass excavated from the Wanggungri site. The results of the chemical analysis of the 11 glass beads show that they are a soda glass group with high contents of $SiO_2$ and $Na_2O$; these can be further subdivided into soda-alumina groups ($Na_2O-Al_2O_3-CaO-Si_2O$). The characteristics of the stabilizer are classified as being of the high alumina glass group (LCHA), except for two glasses. It was concluded that colorant materials affected the coloring for glass beads by various components including Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu and Pb. In addition, we examined six lead glasses which are glass plate and unknown fragments that are of a common lead glass system ($PbO-SiO_2$) with respect to the average contents of PbO (70wt.%) and $SiO_2$ (30wt.%). As a result of comparing these relics with those of the glass beads excavated by Wanggungri, there is a similarity in that they belong to the soda glass group. However, the contents of $Na_2O$ are relatively higher than that of the glass beads in the Mireuksaji pagoda, and most of relics include glasses with a low content of $K_2O$ and CaO. In addition, the PbO and $SiO_2$ contents are slightly different in the lead glass. It seems that the glass relics made at two different sites may have used different raw materials or techniques.

  • In order to improve the chemical durability of glass in the $Na_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$ system, it was investigated in the effect of $B_2O_3$ and ZnO addition and changing amount of each composition, $Na_2O$, $Al_2O_3$, $Li_2O$.   • The crystallization behaviors of slag-based glass in $CaO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2(-Na_2O)$ system have been studied. The mother glass containing 16.50 CaO, 7.50MgO, 19.70Al2O3, 50.80SiO3 and 2.09wt% $Na_2O$ was prepared by using Korean domestic raw materials such as granulated slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. The glass-ceramics composed of major crystalline phase diopside was produced by the heat treatment in a temperature range from 850$^{\circ}$ to 9$25^{\circ}C$ for 0-6hr. The composition and morphology of diopside phase formed in the system were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. The kinetic measurements such as J.M. A plot and Arrhenius plot indicated that the process of nucleation of the initially formed diopside phase could be described from the view point of instantaneous nucleation. It was also demonstrated that the linear crystal growth of diopside phase was proceeded by short range diffusion of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The microstructures of the resulting glass-ceramics were consisted of leafroidal shaped crystalline aggregations.

Effect of CaO on the antibacterial property of zinc borosilicate glasses (Zinc borosilicate 유리의 CaO 첨가에 따른 항균력 개선 효과 검증)

  • In this study, antibacterial glasses were developed by the addition of CaO in ZnO-Na2O-B2O3-SiO2 glass system. The effect of the addition of CaO on the thermal properties, dissolution properties, surface zeta potential and antibacterial activity were analyzed. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) analysis was performed to analyze the thermophysical properties of 30ZnO-xCaO-20Na2O-30B2O3-(20-x)SiO2 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 mol%). It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature decreased as the CaO content increased. The amount of released Zn2+ ions and surface zeta potential of glass samples increased with increasing CaO concentration. For these reasons, the antibacterial activity was dramatically improved. By the addition of CaO, we could successfully develop an antibacterial glass with 99.9 % antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

  • Bioglass which is one of the surface active bionmaterials has a good biocompatibility but a poor mechanical strength, In the present work therefore two types of fluoride-containing bioglasses were coated on an alumina to improve mechanical strength. Crystallization of the coating layer and the hydroxyapatite formation on the bioactive glass coatings in tris-buffer solution were studied. When bioactive glass coated alumina was heat-treated Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was formed on the layer at lower temperature while wollastonite(CaSIO3) was obtained at higher temperature. Hydroxyapatite forming rate on the coating layer with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal was delayed with SiO2 contents in glass composition. However the hydroxyapatite was developed in 20minutes regardless SiO2 contents when the coating layer crystallized into wollastonite. More amount of P3+ ions were leached out of the coating layer with wollastonite than that with Na2CaSi3O8 crystal while Na+ and Ca2+ ions were leached out more easily from the Na2CaSi3O8 crystal containing coating layer.

  • The effects of $Al_2O_3$ on the crystallization behavior of glass compositions in the $Na_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$ system were investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of $Al_2O_3$ content on the mechanical properties, density, phase formation, and microstructures of $Na_2O$-CaO-$P_2O_5$-$SiO_2$ glass ceramics were studied. The thermal parameters of each glass were studied by DTA. The density of the glass ceramic samples was measured by Archimedes' method. It was found that the glass-ceramic containing 2.0 molar percent $Al_2O_3$ had desirable sintering behavior and reached an acceptable density. Phase investigation and micro-structural analysis were performed by XRD and SEM, respectively.

  • The effect of SiO2, Na2O and CaO on isokom temperatures in soda-lime glass is estimated by comparing calculated isokom temperatures using viscosity model proposed by Lakatos. The isokom temperatures at the viscosity of log η = 12.3, 10, 6.6 and 1 (Pa·s) are lowered by 6, 7, 10 and 24℃, respectively, by the substitution of SiO2 with Na2O by 1 mol%. Meanwhile, replacing 1 mol% of SiO2 with CaO raises the isokom temperatures by 3~4 and 2℃ at the viscosity of log η = 12.3 and 10 (Pa·s), respectively, but lowers the temperatures by 1 and 21℃ at the viscosity of log η = 6.6 and 1(Pa·s), respectively.

  • $Na_2O-CaO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ glass was taken as a basic glass and then $Li_2O$ O.5wt%, $K_2O$ 2.0wt% were substituted to $Na_2O$content, MgO 12.0wt %, ZnO 6.0wt % to CaO content. And also nucleation agent $ZrO_2 and $CaF_2$ were added to 1-2wt% respectively. The crystal according to the compositions appeared wollastonite, diopside and diopside.tremolite. The glasses substituted NazO by LizO was decreased thermal expansion coeffcient but substituted by ZnO was opposite direction and both of them increased bending strength. In the ratio of ZrOz to CaF, each 1: 1 and 1: 2 have shown considerable crystal growth at $1000^{circ}C~1050^{\circ}C$ and high bending strength, but the glass in the ratio 1: 2 have shown lowest thermal expansion coefficient. The activation energy was at the glass in the ratio of ZrO, to CaFz 1:2 evaluated 55.24kvsl/mol by Ozawa type and 53.05kal/mol by kissinger type.

Effect of Modifiers in Bioglass on the Glass Properties and the Formation of Apatite (Bioglass내의 수식체가 유리의 물성 및 아파타이트 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • The possible use of bioglass as implant materials is due to its biocompatibility to human body. Even if many animal studies for the bioglasses have been performed, their compositional dependences of structures and physical properties are not fully understood. In the present work, physical property measurements such as density and thermal expansion coefficient were carried out for the bioglasses, with substitution of CaO for Na2O in bioglass composition (46.1%SiO2, 24.4%Na2O, 26.9%CaO, 2.6%P2O5:mol%). Hydroxyapatite formation on the glass surface was also examined after reacted in Tris-buffer solution. As CaO was substituted for Na2O, the bond strength between nonbridging oxygen and modifier became stronger to make glass structure rigid, and resulted in increase in density and decrease in thermal expansion coefficient. When the bioglasses were reacted in Tris-buffer solution, hydroxyapatite was formed on the bioglass surface for all prepared glasses in 2 hours, independently on CaO content, and the thickness of hydroxyapatite layer was decreased a little, while the thickness of SiO2 rich layer was decreased sharply with CaO content.

  • The crystallization of metastable "orthorhombic" phase from the glass in the system of Na $AlSi_3O_8-CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ is studied. These crystals are crystallized in the range of composition from $Ab_80An_20$ to An100. The symmetry of these crystals show orthorhombic as a possible space group P22121. Two probable twin models are proposed. proposed.
