  • This study evaluated the mechanical properties and crack-healing abilities of zirconia composite ceramics. The six kinds of specimens used were: partially stabilized zirconia (Z) and five zirconia composite (ZS, ZST1, ZST2, ZST3, and ZST5) with SiC and $TiO_2$. There was not a large difference between the Vickers hardness of the six types of zirconia ceramics. The bending strength of the ZS specimen degraded rapidly, but the zirconia specimens with $TiO_2$ (ZST1, ZST2, ZST3, and ZST5) showed improved strength. Therefore, it was determined that the bending strength is affected by the crystallization, which is due to the addition of SiC and $TiO_2$. From the crack-healing conditions having the highest bending strength, monolithic zirconia retained its cracks, while the specimens of four types with SiC healed their cracks.

  • The crystallization behavior and microstructural change of the glass-ceramics were analyzed as a function of concentration and etching time of the HF solution in order to enhance the degree of crystallinity induced by heterogeneous nucleation of glass of bottom ash containing 15 wt% $Li_2O$. The nucleation site seemed to be generated where the Si ion was eluted. The main crystal phases in the glass-ceramics fabricated in this study were $\beta$-spodumene and $Li_2SiO_3$. The specimens etched with HF of 0.5 vol% within 0~60 seconds showed increased crystalline peak intensities in XRD pattern with etching time compared to no-etched one. Also the crystal size and crystal occupancy in the glass matrix observed by SEM were increased with etching time. For the glass-ceramics etched with 1.0 and 2.0 vol% HF solution, the etching time over 10 s was not effective to increase the crystallinity. From this study, it was found that the glass-ceramics with the higher crystallinity could be obtained by HF-etching followed by heat treatment process, even though the nucleating agent or 2-stages thermal treatment process were not used.

  • There have been many studies on the biological phenomena of Bioglasses, which nay be used as implant materials in human body. However, not many works on the Bioglass compositions have been reported. In the present study, the effect of Al2O3 substitution for SiO2 in Bioglass of Na2O-CaO-P2O5-SiO2 system on its structure and properties was examined. Infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies for the glass structural analysis, differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis for crystallization of the glass were perfomed. Several physical properties, such as thermal expansion coefficient, softening point, microhardness and reaction phenomena, were also measured. The major crystalline phase, after heat treatment of the glasses, was Na2Ca2(SiO2)3 and the crystal was transformed into other phase with increased substitution of Al2O3. The added Al2O3 reduced non-bridging oxygen in glass structure and thermal expansion coefficient, but increased glass density, sofening point and microhardness. When the glasses are reacted in Tris-buffer solution, the substituted Al2O3 inhibited the formation of hydroxyapatite on the Bioglas surface, and no hydroxyapatite was formed for the sample which contained more than 6wt.% of Al2O3 even if they were reacted for 600 hours.

  • Zeolite A was synthesized from coal fly ash by the microwave heating as well as the conventional heating method. The effects of reaction time, the amount of sodium aluminate, and the reaction temperature on the crystallization of zeolite A were investigated. The optimum crystallization time was about 3 to 6 h in the temperature range of $80{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. The amount of sodium aluminate was found to be optimum when the molar ratio $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ of starting solution was in the range of 0.44 to 1.05 at above $90^{\circ}C$, However, The more amount of sodium aluminate was required to get zeolite A at $80^{\circ}C$. Although the rate of crystallization was slightly faster in the microwave heating than that in the conventional heating, the reaction time need to obtain fully crystallized zeolite A was similar in both methods. Therefore, the influence of the microwave heating was not so large compared with the conventional heating in the synthesis of zeolite A from coal fly ash.

  • Ferroelectric neodymium-substituted $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$(BTO) thin films have been successfully deposited on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate by a sol-gel spin-coating process and the effect of crystallization temperature on their microstructure and ferroelectric properties were studied systematically. $Bi(TMHD)_3$, $Nd(TMHD)_3$, $Ti(O^iPr)_4$ were used as the precursors, which were dissolved in 2-methoxyethanol. The thin films were annealed at various temperatures from 600 to $720^{\circ}C$ in oxygen ambient for 1 hr, which was followed by post-annealed for 1 hr after depositing a Pt electrode to enhance the electrical properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the crystallinity and surface morphology of layered perovskite phase, respectively. The crystallinity of the BNT films was improved and the average grain size increased as the crystallization temperature increased from 600 to $720^{\circ}C$ at an interval of $40^{\circ}C$. The polarization values of the films were a monotonous function of the crystallization temperature. The remanent polarization value of the BNT thin films annealed at $720^{\circ}C$ was $24.82\;{\mu}C/cm^2$ at an applied voltage of 5 V.

  • The films of zeolite X on the surface of metal sieve were prepared by continuous crystallization method. It is known that the growth of zeolite crystal on the surface of metal is mainly dependent on the surface composition of metal sieve. In the present work, the zeolite nuclei could be easily formed as Cr content on the metal surface was removed by acid treatment. In order to investigate the proedure growing of zeolite crystal by the continuous crystallization method, the composition of zeolite X($6.36Na_2O-Al_2O_3-5.3SiO_2-190.8H_2O$)was supplied every 12hour. Then the mechanism and inter-relationship between the metal surface and nucleation are investigated. The results show that as the content of silica increases in the gel mixture, the nuclei of zeoilite are easily formed on the metal surface. Also, it was confirmed that the particle of zeolite stuck on the metal surface continues the linear growth. The particles are combined by the reaction of polycondensation, and finally become the shape of crystal. The sample synthesized by the film type was confirmed as zeolite X by the analyses of SEM and XRD.

  • Structural and electrical properties of BaTiO3 thin films deposited on Pt/SiO2/Si substrates by RF magnetron sputtering method have been investigated. Crystallization behavior and electrical properties were studied for the films deposited under various sputtering gas compositions (Ar+O2 gas mixture) and substrate temperatures. All the films deposited above 50$0^{\circ}C$ were all crystallized and their preferred orientation changed from (001) to (111) with the addition of oxygen gas. The dielectric constant of films deposited in pure argon was about 110 and showed little dependence on the substrate temperature. But that was increased as the ratio of O2/Ar increased and its substrate temperature dependence was discernible. The highest dielectric constant reached to 550. In addition, the films deposited in mixed gas showed stable dielectric properties against the frequency and temperature.

  • LAS (lithium aluminosilicate) sol was synthesized using the hydrolysis-condensation reaction of TEOS, chelated Al(OBus)3 and Li-salt with H2O in alcohol (EtOH+2-Propanol) medium. Effects of important reaction parameters on the properties of sol and gel-derived LAS were examined. The crystallization of the sol-gel derived LAS with ${\beta}$-spodumene composition began at ∼600$^{\circ}C$, and a series of polymorphic transformations occurred as temperature was increased to 1100$^{\circ}C$: amorphous LAS\longrightarrowhexagonal LiAl(SiO3)2\longrightarrow${\beta}$-spodumene. Lowering Li content in the gel enhanced densification and retarded the crystallization significantly. Optimum reaction conditions of LAS sol formation for thin coating applications were derived from rheological measurements, and these can be summarized as: H2O/total alkoxides molar ratio=4, pH=∼2.5, and aging time of ∼250h.

  • Ferroelectric Sr$_2$(Nb,Ta)$_2$O$_{7}$ (SNTO) thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition processes. SNTO thin films were spin-coated on Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/(100)Si substrates. After multiple coating, dried thin films were heat-treated for decomposition of residual organics and crystallization. B site-rich impurity phase, i.e. [Sr(Nb,Ta)$_2$O$_{6}$], was found after annealing, where its appearance was dependent on process temperature indicating the possible reaction with substrate. Dielectric and other relevant electrical properties were measured and the results showed a little possibility in ferroelectric gate random access memory devices.s.s.

  • The synthesis of glass-ceramic materials from glasses based on industrial wastes or natural rocks their physical properties were studied. Glasses of composition, CaO14.7∼16.1, MgO7.4∼9.0, Al2O38.3∼19.3, SiO2 48.9∼51.0wt% were prepared from domestic blast furnace slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. with additions of chromic oxide, and fluoride as nucleating agent. The glasses were subjected to controlled heat treatments and yielded fine microstructure of glass-ceramics which were composed of monocrystalline phase of aluminous diopside. X-ray diffraction techniques were adopted to identify the crystalline phases and to determine the degree of crystallization quantitatively. Density, coefficient of thermal expansion, young's modulus, microhardness and modulus of rupture were measured and the resulting properties were discussed in terms of the heat-treatment conditions, the degree of crystallization, species of crystaline phase, the microstructures formed in glass-cramics and the chemical compositions of mother glasses.
