Background: Limited availability of corn stover due to the competing uses (organic manure, animal feed, bio-materials, and bioenergy) presents a major concern for its future in the bio-economy. Furthermore, biomass research has exhibited different results due to the differences in the supply of enzymes and dissimilar analytical methods. The effect of the two leading pretreatment techniques (dilute acid and alkaline) on glucose yield from three corn stover fractions (cob, stalk, and leaf) sourced from a single harvest in Uganda were studied at temperatures 100, 120, 140, and $160^{\circ}C$ over reaction times of 5, 10, 30, and 60 min. Results: From this study, the highest glucose concentrations obtained from the dilute acid (DA) pretreated cobs, stalks, and leaves were 18.4 g/L (66.8% glucose yield), 16.2 g/L (64.1% glucose yield), and 11.0 g/L (49.5% glucose yield), respectively. The optimal pretreatment settings needed to obtain these yields from the DA pretreated samples were at a temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ over an incubation time of 30 min. The highest glucose concentrations obtained from the alkaline (AL) pretreated cobs, stalks, and leaves were 24.7 g/L (81.73% glucose yield), 21.3 g/L (81.23% glucose yield), and 15.0 g/L (51.92% glucose yield), respectively. To be able to achieve these yields, the optimal pretreatment settings for the cobs and stalks were $140^{\circ}C$ and for a retention time of 30 min, while the leaves require optimal conditions of $140^{\circ}C$ and for a retention time of 60 min. Conclusions: The study recommends that the leaves could be left on the field during harvesting since the recovery of glucose from the pretreated cobs and stalks is higher.
The random amplified ploymorphic DNAs (RAPD) assay is a simple and useful tool in identification of appropriate genetic markers, that requires no knowledge of target DNA sequence. RAPD products were generated directly from seaweed tissues, without prior nucleic acid extraction, of Porphyra yezoensis, Ulva pertusa and Undaria pinnatifida. The nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) fragment however was not amplified directly from the seaweed tissues. Using DNA extracted by the LiCl method, both the ITS and RAPD's have been amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. RAPD of P yezoensis, thallus (n) and conchocelis (2n) produced lots of different polymorphic bands (36-50$\%$) depending on the arbitrary primers used. Difference was also observed between direct tissues amplification and DNA extracts amplification (53-57$\%$). Thus it is important to use the same ploidy of tissue for DNA extraction and as a RAPD template.
In this study, a series of highly swelling hydrogels based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polymethacrylamide (PMAM) was prepared through free radical polymerization. The graft copolymerization reaction was performed in a homogeneous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The crosslinked graft copolymer, alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (Alg-gPMAM), was then partially hydrolyzed by NaOH solution to yield a hydrogel, hydrolyzed alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (H-Alg-g-PMAM). During alkaline hydrolysis, the carboxamide groups of Alg-g-PMAM were converted into hydrophilic carboxylate anions. Either the Alg-g-PMAM or the H-Alg-g-PMAM was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of the grafting variables (i.e., concentration of MBA, MAM, and APS) and the alkaline hydrolysis conditions (i.e., NaOH concentration, hydrolysis time, and temperature) were optimized systematically to achieve a hydrogel having the maximum swelling capacity. Measurements of the absorbency in various aqueous salt solutions indicated that the swelling capacity decreased upon increasing the ionic strength of the swelling medium. This behavior could be attributed to a charge screening effect for monovalent cations, as well as ionic cross-linking for multivalent cations. Because of the high swelling capacity in salt solutions, however, the hydrogels might be considered as anti-salt superabsorbents. The swelling behavior of the superabsorbing hydrogels was also measured in solutions having values of pH ranging from 1 to 13. Furthermore, the pH reversibility and on/off switching behavior, measured at pH 2.0 and 8.0, suggested that the synthesized hydrogels were excellent candidates for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents. Finally, we performed preliminary investigations of the swelling kinetics of the synthesized hydrogels at various particle sizes.

The perovskites in the $LaAlO_3-BaZrO_3$ system (i.e., $(1-x)LaAlO_3-xBaZrO_3$ were fabricated by a solid state reaction and their dielectric properties were investigated. For the compositions of x=0.1~0.9, the mixture of $LaAlO_3$ with a rhombohedral structure and $BaZrO_3$ with a cubic was observed when the sintering was conducted at $1500^{\circ}C$, indicating that the solubility of constituent elements was very low and a narrow solid solution region might exist. The large difference of ionic radii between $La^{3+}$ ion (0.136nm, C.N.=12) and $Ba^{2+}$ ion (0.161nm) or $Al^{3+}$ ion (0.0535nm, C.N.=6) and $Zr^{4+}$ ion (0.072nm) might hinder the mutual substitution. Within the compositions of x=0~0.7, the dielectric constant of the mixture increased with the amount of $BaZrO_3$, i.e., x value, which was in good agreement with the logarithmic mixing rule (In $_{r,i}={\Sigma}v_iln\;_{r,i}$). The increase in $BaZrO_3$ doping decreased $Q{\times}f$ value significantly due to the low $Q{\times}f$ value of $BaZrO_3$ itself, a poor microstructure of the mixture with an increased grain boundary area per volume, and defects in the cation and oxygen sub-lattices which were respectively caused by the evaporation of barium during the sintering process and the substitution of Ba on La-site or Al on Zr-site.

Recently, the use of TiO2 as a phtocatalyst has been diversely investigated due to its excellent durability performance and high photocatalytic reaction efficiency. Active researches have particularly focused on the development of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites in order to remove the atmospheric pollutants. Furthermore, the potential utilization of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites as road accessories such as tunnels, road median separators and soundproof walls in the form of tiles, blocks and structural components has been widely examined. In this regard, a thorough understanding on the material characteristics of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites should be preceded. The present overview article, therefore, revisits previous studies of TiO2-incorporated cementitious composites and summarizes their various physicochemical properties and atmospheric pollutants removal performance.
Weedy rice(red rice) collected in Korea were crossed with the Japonica, Javanica and Indica tester cultivars, and also crossed among those collected lines. Their seed fertility was counted and refered to their cross affinities. Some tester cultivars such as, Suweongjo, Malagkit Sinaguing and wx 817 which were regarded as belong to the Japonica, Javanica and Indica respectively, showed the typical tendencies of hybrid sterility when they were crossed each other. But, other testers such as Kwanak, Tapaiko, Belle Patna and Tarichaosun showed some differencies from those typical patterns, implying some varigations within a ecotype. The hybrids of weedy rice crossed to the Japonica testers showed higher fertility with a few semisterilities. While the crosses of weedy rice to the Javanicas or Indicas showed high sterility implying closer affinity relationships of weedy rice to the Japonicas. Even those weedy rice lines such as Samsanmyeon 8 and Sanchungaengmi B which showed semi-sterility when they were crossed to the Japonica testers showed high sterility when they were crossed to both Javanicas and Indicas. The hybrids among weedy rice lines showed high fertility raning 69% to 96%. Even those weedy rice lines which showed semi-sterility in the crosses with Japonica testers, showed high-fertility when they were crossed with those weedy rice lines. Though the amylose content, Alkali Digestive Value, Phenol reaction and grain shapes of theose weedy rice lines showed divers variations, the cross affinities of them showed closer phylogenie relationship to the Japonicas than to Japvanicas or Indicas. But the genetic influinces of Indicas to those weedy rices were not ignorable.

We manufactured rice-whole soybean curd by a microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) with a mixture of hydrolyzed rice and micronized whole soybean powder (MWSP) and analyzed its rheological properties, including texture, viscoelasticity, protein cross-linking, and surface structure. A 40% rice suspension digested with a Termamyl enzyme at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 min showed a 9.0% reducing sugar and a consistency of $1.27\;Pa{\cdot}s^n$, resulting in a great reduction in consistency. A MWSP suspension with 22% solid content was transformed into a typical tofu texture. MWSP curd fortified with 7.5% rice showed enhanced texture properties, with a hardness of 639.6 dyne/$cm^2$, and a springiness of 0.96. In a MWSP suspension (18~22% w/v) treated with 5% MTGase, viscoelasticity increased dependently with MWSP concentration, and a 22% MWSP indicated a G' value of 5.1 Pa and a G'' value of 9.0 Pa. Furthermore, soybean proteins present in the 22% MWSP curd largely disappeared or formed polymers with a high molecular weight by MTGase reaction within 30 min. MWSP (22%) fortified with 7.5% rice showed similar polymerization patterns on SDS-PAGE. The surface structure of the rice-MWSP curds was more dense and homogeneous network due to the addition of hydrolyzed rice. However, the surface structure of all rice-MWSP curds became rough and showed a non-homogeneous network after cold storage.

The effects of the heat treatment temperature ($600^{\circ}C-1050^{\circ}C$) on the formation of $MgB_2$ and the superconducting properties have been examined. The self-synthesized $MgB_4$ and commercial Mg powders were used as raw materials for the formation of $MgB_2$. The superconducting critical temperatures ($T_cs$) of $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors prepared at $600^{\circ}C-850^{\circ}C$ were as high as 37-38 K regardless of the heat treatment temperature. However, because $MgB_4$ is more stable than $MgB_2$ at above $850^{\circ}C$, no superconducting signals were detected in the susceptibility-temperature curves of the samples prepared above $850^{\circ}C$. As for the critical current density ($J_c$), the sample heat-treated at a low temperature ($600^{\circ}C$) for a prolonged period (40 h) showed a Jc higher than those prepared at $650^{\circ}C-850^{\circ}C$ for a short period (1 h). The FWHM (full width at half maximum) result showed that the grain size of $MgB_2$ of the $600^{\circ}C$ sample was smaller than that of the other samples. The high $J_c$ of the $600^{\circ}C$sample is attributed to the presence of large numbers of grain boundaries, which can act as flux pinning centers of $MgB_2$.

The result were S. pauberis that γ-hemolytic chain form cocci and negative reaction of catalase, Multiplex PCR assay were 718 bp amplicon size.
In this study, the porous CuO/MnO2 catalyst was prepared through the co-precipitation process from an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4), manganese(II) acetate (Mn(CH3COO)2·4H2O) and copper(II) acetate (Cu(CH3COO)2·H2O). The phase change in MnO2 was analyzed according to the reaction molar ratio of KMnO4 to Mn(CH3COO)2. The reaction mole ratio of KMnO4 to Mn(CH3COO)2·4H2O was varied at 0.3:1, 0.6:1, and 1:1. The aqueous solution of Cu(CH3COO)2 was injected into a mixed solution of KMnO4 and Mn(CH3COO)2 to 10~75 wt% relative to MnO2. The Cu ion co-precipitates as CuO with MnO2 in a highly dispersed state on MnO2. The physicochemical property of the prepared CuO/MnO2 was analyzed by using the TGA, DSC, XRD, SEM, and BET. The different phase types of MnO2 were prepared according to the reaction mole ratio of KMnO4 to Mn(CH3COO)2·4H2O. The results confirmed that the porous CuO/MnO2 catalyst with γ-phase MnO2 was produced in the reaction mole ratio of KMnO4 to Mn(CH3COO)2 as 0.6:1 at room temperature.
