  • The last two decades have seen an immense growth in our understanding of the physics of the birth and evolution of our Universe. However there are still many unanswered questions, such as: what is the nature of the dark energy, which drives the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe? Is the acceleration driven by a cosmological constant, some dynamical dark energy, or a modification of the gravitational force law on large scales? The next generation of radio observatories will conduct large area radio continuum and HI intensity mapping surveys, and so will make possible new and complimentary tests of these fundamental questions. In this talk I present the design of these next generation of surveys, current forecasts for the effectiveness of these cosmological probes, and results from precursor experiments.

  • Dew generation on an outer surface is considered as an important issue to be settled in the field of home appliances. In the case of a refrigerator that is subject to the dew generation problem on the surface of an outer-door of refrigeration thread, and so as to solve this problem, the electric heater is generally used for drying the dew. However, the heater inevitably requires electrical power consumption that is one of critical issues on the refrigerator. In this study, to prevent dew generation without the heater, a method of using induced heat from room temperature was proposed. In edge sides of a door, high conductive plates are installed and received the heat from outside that is relatively high temperature, and the heat is transferred onto dew generation region. Using prototypes, performance test was conducted under a certain temperature and humidity condition. The experimental results show that the surface temperature on the dew generation region was increased about $0.3{\sim}2.5^{\circ}C$ without use of any heater.

  • This paper is intended as an opening of a dialog on how to apply platform thinking in the development of innovation environments. It will briefly describe a new STP (Science and Technology Park) concept called 3GSP (Third Generation Science Park), which is gaining momentum in Finland. The paper explains the fundamental changes that are currently taking place in the global innovation environment and explains why platform thinking is becoming an essential element in ecosystem development. The theoretical background and classifications of platforms are described and the benefits to be gained from STP perspective are highlighted. The paper emphasizes especially the role of so called 'competence platforms' and explains the main characteristics of a fully working competence platform. The role of competence platforms in understanding serendipity and as a fundamental factor in building the team is also highlighted. The paper analyses from STP perspective several practical examples, where platform thinking supports the emergence of new innovation environments, including Urban Mill (Finland) and Meetberlage (Netherlands). The requirements for comprehensive competence platform services are presented and their potential to support community building and therefore ecosystem development is illustrated. This analysis will provide STP practitioners with new models for applying platform thinking and will help to establish co-creation, open innovation and serendipity management practices. The case studies presented will help STP management teams to evaluate the benefits of competence platforms in different contexts.

  • We compared the clinical efficacy of LED therapy using 880 nm and 630 nm LED to test collagen accumulations in subcutaneous tissue of mouse after LED irradiation by measuring the quantity of collagen. 880 nm and 630 nm LED was irradiated on the back of ICR mouse given at $10.8J/cm^2$ followed for 30 minutes everyday for 5 weeks. Histological observation was performed by Hematoxylin & Eosin staining and Masson's Trichrome collagen staining. We also used Sircol soluble collagen assay kit for measuring the amounts of collagen in the mouse skin tissue after 1, 3, and 5 weeks post LED irradiation, respectively. Collagen generation was found at subcutaneous tissue, and the quantity of collagen in 880 nm LED group had grown more than that of 630 nm LED group at 5 weeks follow-up later. About 75% more efficacies for collagen generation were found in the group of 5th week of 880nm LED irradiation. The efficacy of 880nm LED could be more useful than 630 nm LED for synthesizing collagens in mouse subcutaneous tissue as time followed.

  • A microbial fuel cell (MFC) and bioelectrochemical systems are novel bioprocesses which employ exoelectrogenic biofilm on electrode as a biocatalyst for electricity generation and various useful chemical production. Previous reports show that electrogenic biofilms of MFCs are time varying systems and dynamically interactive with the electrically conductive media (carbon paper as terminal electron acceptor). It has been reported that maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method can automatically control load by algorithm so that increase power generation and columbic efficiency. In this study, we developed logic based control strategy for external load resistance by using $LabVIEW^{TM}$ which increases the power production with using flat-plate MFCs and MPPT circuit board. The flat-plate MFCs inoculated with anaerobic digester sludge were stabilized with fixed external resistance from $1000{\Omega}$ to $100{\Omega}$. Automatic load control with MPPT started load from $52{\Omega}$ during 120 hours of operation. MPPT control strategy increased approximately 2.7 times of power production and power density (1.95 mW and $13.02mW/m^3$) compared to the initial values before application of MPPT (0.72 mW and $4.79mW/m^3$).

  • The primary goal of any communication spacecraft is to provide communication in variety of frequency bands based on mission requirements within the Indian mainland. Some of the spacecrafts operating in S-band utilizes a 6m or larger aperture Unfurlable Antenna (UFA for S-band links and provides coverage through five or more S-band spot beams over Indian mainland area. The Unfurlable antenna is larger than the satellite and so the antenna is stowed during launch. Upon reaching the orbit, the antenna is deployed using motors. The deployment status of any deployment mechanism will be monitored and verified by the telemetered values of micro-switch position before the start of deployment, during the deployment and after the completion of the total mechanism. In addition to these micro switches, a camera onboard will be used for capturing still images during primary and secondary deployments of UFA. The proposed checkout system is realized for validating the performance of the onboard camera as part of Integrated Spacecraft Testing (IST) conducted during payload checkout operations. It is designed for acquiring the payload data of onboard camera in real-time, followed by archiving, processing and generation of images in near real-time. This paper presents the architecture, design and implementation features of the acquisition, processing and Image generation system for Camera onboard spacecraft. Subsequently this system can be deployed in missions wherever similar requirement is envisaged.

  • As the energy consumption increases continuously, the emission amount of air pollutants is growing, and after all it can influence the global environment as welt as the regional atmosphere. So, the clean energy which emits less air pollutants should be developed and widely used to reduce emission of pollutants. Electricity, known for clean energy in the side of consumption, is not actually clean in the process of generation. Electric power is generated using fossil fuels which produce acidic gases like $SO_{2}$, $NO_{x}$, etc. The emission rates of $SO_{2}$, $NO_{x}$, $CO_{2}$ are 2g,0.78g and 1 l0g per electric power generating Ikwh. If one light(60 watt bulb) be turned off at each house for a month electricity will be saved about 1.Skillion kwh a year. This is almost the same as 4,170 tons of $SO_{2}$ and $NO_{x}$. As a result the economization of electricity will be one of the effective strategy to reduce the air pollution and to keep our life clean and comfortable.

  • Effects of dietary fatty acids and vitamin E on antioxidant vitamin status were studied in rat brain sections. Sources of dietary fat(10t%) were safflower oil(SO) poor in $\omega$3 fatty acid and mixed oil (MO) with computer-adjustd fatty acid ratios(AA/DHA=1.4, $\omega$6/$\omega$3=6.3, P/M/S=1.0/1.5/1, AA=2.%)with (ME) and without(MO) vitamin E(500mg/kg diet). Rats were fed the three kinds of diet from 3-4 wks prior to the conception. At the age of 3 & 9wks of the 2nd generation rat, antioxidant vitamins were measured in frontal cortex(FC), corpus striatum (CS), cerebellum(CB) and hippocampus(HP) using a multiwavelength, reverse phase gradient HPLC system. The levels of antioxidant vitamins converged to the similar value in all groups at 9 wks of age. Retinol, lycopene and cryptoxanthin levels of all experimental groups were found to be the highest in hippocampus at both 3 & 9wks of age. The levels of vitamin E appeared to be higher in the order of HP>CS-CB>FC in MO & ME. Beta-carotene and retinol showed the lowest level in hippocampus of vitamin E supplemented groups, even though vitamin E level tended to be higher in other sections. It seemed that vitamin E has an inhibitory action on the uptake of beta-carotene or acts as a preferred antioxidant to beta-carotene in certain section of the brain. By improving fatty acid balance (AA/DHA = 1.4, $\omega$6/$\omega$3=6.3, P/M/S=1.0/1.5/1, AA = 2%), the levels of vitamin E, retinol, lycopene & beta=carotene tended to be higher in MO than in SO, although crytoxanthin became lower at 3wks of age. In short, dietary fatty acids and vitamin E have different influence on antioxidant vitamin status in different rat brain sections. The higher levels of antioxidant vitamins in hippocampus should be pursued further in relation to behavioral development of rats.

  • Measurements of proton adsorption density have been conducted in preparing alumina suspensions with aqueous solutions of HCL, HNO3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 And effects of anion acid concentration proton adsorption density and solid loading on the viscosity of the alumina suspensions have been investigated. Aqueous solutions of HCl. or HNO3 were suitable for the preparation of highly concentrated suspensions as the generation of surface charge on alumina particles was depressed by the specific adsorption of {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }} and {{{{ { PO}`_{4 } ^{3- } }} Optimum conditions for maximizing solid loading were dependent upon proton adsorption density and acid concentration.

  • Recently, the distributed power generation market using natural gas is expected to expand gradually according to the government's future energy conversion policy. Distributed power generation means small power generation source near the power demand site, which has the advantage of reducing the construction costs of the transmission and distribution infrastructure, operating cost and power loss. A typical example of distributed generation using natural gas is the trigeneration system. In this study, we conducted a basic study on the performance analysis of trigeneration desiccant system for dehumidifying / cooling / heating in the air conditioner room by using the cold and engine waste heat energy generated in the trigeneration system. It shows that the system efficiency increases and the energy consumption decreases as the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the trigeneration system increases compared with the general air conditioning system.
