Evaluation of the Chemical Compositions of Solar Salts Produced in Korea (국내 시판 천일염의 성분 조사)

  • To evaluate the effect of aging on solar salts produced in Korea, the chemical compositions of the solar salts, including their heavy metal contents, were analyzed after they were aged for one-year (OA) and for three years (TA). The average contents of the components were: sodium chloride; 81.4% (OA) and 90.9% (TA), chloride; 57.7% (OA) and 65.0% (TA), moisture content; 4.7% (TA) and 12.0% (OA), insoluble solids; 0.03% (OA) and 0.04% (TA), and $SO_4$ ions; and 0.57% (TA) and 0.85% (OA). No significant difference was found, however, in the heavy metal contents. Heavy metals such as As, Pb, and Hg were detected with values far below the maximum permissible limit, and Cd was not detected in the salts. The TA solar salts showed higher values of sodium chloride, chloride, and insoluble solids than the OA solar salts, but the TA solar salts had lower moisture and $SO_4$ values. These results clearly indicate that the levels of heavy metals in the OA and TA solar salts that are produced in Korea are safe.

The Effects of Liquid Pig Manure Application on the Production of Japanese Millet (Echinochloa crusgalli) Soil Properties, and the Chemical Characteristics of Leaching Water (돈분 액비 시용이 피의 생산성, 토양 특성 및 용탈수의 화학적 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of liquid pig manure on the production of Japanese millet, the chemical characteristics of pasture soil and leaching water. The study was undertaken from June to September 2005. Randomized complete block design was used to allot four treatments: T1 (no fertilizer), T2 (N : 200 kg/ha, p : 150 kg/ha, K : 150 kg/ha), T3 (liquid pig manure containing 1.7% DM 200 kg N/ha) and T4 (liquid pig manure containing 7.0% DM 200 kg N/ha). Leaching water was sampled at 21 August (1st time), 9 September (2nd time) and 26 September (3rd time), 2005, respectively. No significant differences in the dry matter yield of Japanese millet was found among the four treatments, whereas the plant lengths of Japanese millet were higher in the T2, T3 and T4 than in T1 (p<0.05). Nitrogen, P and K uptake of J. millet tended to be influenced by application of chemical fertilizer or 7.0% DM liquid pig manure compared with T1 or 1.8% DM liquid pig manure. The organic matter (OM) content of soil was higher in T2, T3 and T4 than in T1. Na content was highest in T3 among the four treatments. $NO_{3^-}N\;or\;NH_{4^-}N$ content in leaching was not different among the four treatments. $SO_4$ content in leaching water sampled in 1st time was high in T4, but in T3 from 3rd time (p<0.05). Cl, Mg and Na contents were high in leaching water sampled in the 1st time from T4, whereas high in those from T3 in 2nd or 3rd time. Results show that the application of a high DM liquid pig manure is not better for producing Japanese millet and improving the properties of pasture soil than a low DM liquid pig manure. However, the contents of $SO_4$, Cl, Mg and Na in leaching water sampled in 1st time were high in a high DM liquid pig manure.

A Study on NH3-SCR Vanadium-Based Catalysts according to Tungsten Content for Removing NOx Generated from Biogas Cogeneration (바이오가스 열병합 발전에서 발생하는 NOx 제거를 위한 텅스텐 함량에 따른 NH3-SCR 바나듐계 촉매 연구)

  • In this study, a vanadium catalyst study was conducted on the various characteristics of the exhaust gas in the Selective-Catalytic-Reduction (SCR) method in which nitrogen oxides emitted from cogeneration using biogas are removed by using ammonia as a reducing agent and a catalyst. V/W/TiO2, a commercial catalyst, was used as the catalyst in this study, and the effect was confirmed according to the tungsten content under various operating conditions. As a result of the NH3-SCR experiment, the denitrification performance was confirmed at 380 ~ 450 ℃ more than 95%, and durability to trace amounts of SO2 was confirmed through the SO2 durability experiment and TGA analysis. As a result of H2-TPR analysis, the higher the tungsten content, the better the redox properties. Accordingly, enhanced oxidizing properties were confirmed in the oxidation test for a trace amount of carbon monoxide emitted from the cogeneration. In NH3-DRIFTs analysis, it was confirmed that the higher the tungsten content, the higher both the Bronsted/Lewis acid sites and the better the thermal durability when tungsten is added to the catalyst. Based on the experiments under various operating conditions, it is considered that a catalyst with a high tungsten content is suitable to be applied to cogeneration using biogas.

Cytogenetic Analysis of the Triploid Pacific Abalone, Haliotis discus hannai (북방전복, Haliotis discus hannai 3배체의 세포유전학적 연구)

  • In this study, we invesgated a cytogenetic analysis of the Pacific triploid abalone, Haliotis discus hannai induced by low temperature treatment. We got a lot of mitotic metaphase chromosome spreads from the triploid and diploid Pacific abalones' hatched larvae (trochophores). The chromosome number of diploid abalone was 2n = 36 and that of triploid abalone was 3n = 54, so the chromosome number of triploid abalone was 1.5 times higher than that of diploid abalone. We developed a modified flow cytometric method for Pacific abalone from the existing methods. We uesd 51 months aged triploid and diploid Pacific abalones' hemolymph to get the DNA contents by flow cytometry. The DNA content of diploid abalone was 1.743 pg/cell and the DNA content of triploid abalone was 1.49 times higher than that of diploid one. It proved that triploid abalone was consisted with two sets of maternal diploid and one set of paternal genome.

Effect of Sulfur Dioxide Gas and Abscisic Acid Pretreatment on Physiological Susceptibility and Growth Damages of Coniferous Seedlings (아황산(亞黃酸)가스 및 ABA 전처리(前處理)가 침엽수(針葉樹) 유묘(幼苗)의 생장피해(生長被害)와 생리적(生理的) 감수성(感受性)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of $SO_2$ gas on growth of tree species and the effect of pretreatment of ABA to Pinus koraiensis. Abies holophylla and Taeus cuspidata on the susceptibility for $SO_2$ gas damage. The survey was carried out on the water contents of leaf and shoot, and the acidities of bark and leaf, and the chlorophyll and water soluble sulfur contents, and the changes of transpiration rates on selected seedlings exposed to $SO_2$ gas at seven levels : 0ppm, 0.5ppm, 1ppm, 2ppm, 4ppm, 26.4ppm ABA, 56.8ppm ABA. The results obtained from this research are as follows : 1. The water contents of leaf and shoot of the three tree species decreased with increasing concentrations of $SO_2$ gas and the relative susceptibility of Abies holophylla was larger than those of Taxus cuspidata and Pinus koraiensis because moisture diminution rates were higher in leaves and shoots of Abies holophylla than those of other species. 2. The acidities of bark and leaf of the three tree species increased with increasing concentrations of $SO_2$ gas. The relative susceptibility of Pinus koraiensis in bark acidity was larger than those of Abies holopfaylla and Toxus cuspidata. Abies holophylla was more susceptive than Pinus koraiensis and Taxus cuspidata. 3. Water soluble sulfur contents of the three tree species increased with increasing concentration of $SO_2$ gas. The relative susceptibility of Taxus cuspidata in water soluble sulfur contents was lager than those of Pinus koraiensis and Abies holophylla. 4. Leaf chlorophyll contents of the three tree species decreased with increasing concentrations of $SO_2$ gas. The order of the relative susceptibility in leaf chlorophyll contents was Taxus cuspidata, Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis. 5. Correlation coefficients among the measurement were highly significant for $SO_2$ treatment in all three tree species. 6. The transpiration rates of Abies holophylla and Taxus cuspidata did not change until up to 220 minutes after initiation of $SO_2$ gas fumigation, and changed a little during the time between 220 minutes and 270 minutes. On the other hand, Pinus koraiensis continued to change in transpiration rates little by little from the start of $SO_2$ gas treatment up to 270 minutes, meaning that Pinus koraiensis is less sensitive to ABA. 7. When 2ppm of $SO_2$ was treated. ABA pretreatment effect was detected on the six measurement parameters. ABA affected the resistance of plants by inducing stomata closure. 8. The order of relative susceptibility of the three tree species to $SO_2$ gas fumigation was Abies holophylla, Taxus cuspidata and Pinus koraiensis. Pinus koraiensis was more resistant to $SO_2$ gas than Abies holophylla and Taxus cuspidata.

Salt Movement of Soils by Runoff in Green House Area (시설재배지 토양의 유거수에 의한 염류의 이동)

  • Salt accumulation and movement by runoff ware studied in runoff resevior lysimeter constructed in a green house located in the area of Cheongju, Chungbuk province. Average runoff ratio of rainfall within period of this experiment was 58%. The average content of cations lost from field soil by runoff was in the order of $Ca^{2+}(27.12\;mg/L\;)$ > $K^+(9.18\;mg/L)$ > $Mg^{2+}(2.53\;mg/L)$ > $Na^+(1.89\;mg/L)$ and in the care anions $SO_4\;^{2-}(63.38\;mg\;/L)$ > $NO_3\;^-(25.40\;mg/L)$ > $Cl^-(4.19\;mg/L)$ > $PO_4\;^{3-}(3.18\;mg/L)$. Amounts of salt movement by runoff $SO_4\;^{2-}(140.2\;kg/ha)$, $Ca^{2+}(59.9\;kg/ha)$, $NO_3\;^-(56.1\;kg/ha)$, $K^+(20.3\;kg/ha)$, $Cl^-(9.3\;kg/ha)$, $PO_4\;^{3-}(7.0\;kg/ha)$, $Mg^{2+}(5.6\;kg/ha)$ and $Na^+(4.2\;kg/ha)$. The loss amount of $PO_4\;^{3-}$ was the lowest among the anions investigated in this experiment. $P_2O_5$ was accumulated on the soil surface due to strong affinity for the sorption site on the soil particle surface.

Development of Optimal Binder for Recycling Cold Asphalt Mixture (재활용 상온아스콘 혼합물의 최적 결합재 개발)

  • This study was carried out to design the optimum mixing ratio of aggregate, cyclic aggregate, and binder (moisture, emulsified asphalt, and emulsion type additives) and produce recycling cold asphalt paving mixture satisfying site work standard. The cyclic aggregate satisfying KS F 2572 was collected from waste asphalt by adequate processing. As the moisture content increased, the shearing strength was decreased. The maximum marshall stability was shown at the 3.0 wt% moisture content. So the optimum moisture content was 3.0 wt%. The marshall stability and flow value with the amount of emulsified asphalt was satisfied in the range of 0.5~2.5 wt%, and the porosity was satisfied in the range of 0.7~2.5 wt%. So the optimum amount of emulsified asphalt was 1.6 wt%. The optimum amount of emulsion type additive was 0.1 wt% in the light of marshall stability and degree of saturation of recycling cold asphalt mixture.
