  • The study was basically carried out to establish the appropriate condition for applying the Westergren method for erythrocyte sedimentation rate(W-ESR) in Throughbred racehorses at recess. To do this, we examined the correlationship among some factors including the kind of anticoagulants, optimal ambient temperature and reading time for W-ESR in healthy racehorses. The difference between the blood samples treated with only 3.8% solution of sodium citrate(SC) and both EDTA and SC as a coagulant, there was not recognized any significant difference(p<0.05) in the levels of W-ESR irrespective of the ambient temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ or $30^{\circ}C$. The best optimal ambient temperature for W-ESR in horses was proved at $30^{\circ}C$ resulting from the tendency of the most reduced dispersion in mean values analyaed from repeatly 4 times to the same blood samles compared with those of $10^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The optimal reading time was determined as 60 minutes(Y=237.2~4.1X, $r^2=0.998$) and 70 minutes(Y=247.8~4.2X, $r^2=0.999$) under the same temperature of $30^{\circ}C$; the latter showed the better result on the basis of the correlation of packed cell volume(PCV) and ESR values. About 13 healthy racehorses, we compared the real values of W-ESR respectively obtained at 60 minutes and 70 minutes at $30^{\circ}C$ with the anticipated values of PCV by means of the analysis of linear regression equitation. As the result of this, the strong correlation between both of them was confirmed. For practical use of W-ESR in Thoroughbred racehorese, we can recommend the condition of 60 or 70 minutes for the optimal reading time as well as $30^{\circ}C$ for the best ambient temperature.

  • Enzymatic hydrolysis of shark (Squatina oculata) cartilage (SC) was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) for chondroitin sulfate (CS) preparation. Among 11 commercial proteases, Maxazyme NNP showed highest productivity (CS yield per enzyme cost) of CS. Optimal hydrolysis conditions determined by RSM were 1.63% and 2.87 hr for enzyme concentration and hydrolysis time ($r^2\;=\;0.9527$, p<0.0l), respectively and highest yield of hydrolysate under the conditions was 42.3%. The yield ($43.1{\pm}2.1%$) and CS content ($24.8{\pm}0.1%$) of hydrolysate at optimal condition verified statistical optimization of SC enzymatic hydrolysis was valid.

  • The measurement of hydration level in the surface layer of the skin, stratum corneum (SC), gives important information on the biophysical properties and function of the skin barrier such as softness, flexibility, and healthiness of the skin. But it is difficult to measure a consistent hydration level from a sample to another sample due to individual variations and environmental changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate objective hydration after using various products in the SC. The SC Hydration was measured by capacitance (Corneometer$^{(R)}$, C+K, Germany) on the ventral site of forearm from 40 healthy volunteers. The skin surface was chronologically measured immediately after application of the test products and 3 and 6 hours later. We analyzed the averages of five measurements of each site and used the hydration increase rate for correction on untreated site variation. We found that most polyols including glycerol and butylenes glycol influenced directly the hydration increase rate in the SC previously. In this study, glycerol was used to prepare the standard products from 0 to 20 percents and applied to the same volunteers. The individual standard curve showed linear relation to glycerol concentrations. Based on the the standard curve, hydration of SC was converted into hydration increase rate to glycerol concentrations. The converted glycerol concentrations of products were repetitive and reproducible. In addition, the individual standard curve was used to relate the skin type of each individual. These results suggest that the hydration of the SC standardized regardless of external variation and individual skin condition can explain detailed skin state variation. Further studies will be conducted with other ingredients such as surfactants, lipids and aqueous materials, and with other methods for noninvasive measurement.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate monthly variation in semen characteristics in Black Bedouin and Black Bedouin${\times}$Damascus crossbred bucks. Twenty one Black Bedouin Goat bucks (BG) and 20 $F_1$ Black Bedouin${\times}$Damascus crossbred goat bucks (CB) were used in the study. Animals were 2 to 5 years old at the beginning of the study. Body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), scrotal circumference (SC) and semen samples were evaluated monthly for all bucks. Body weight, BCS and SC differed according to month of collection (p<0.0001). Body weight and BCS were greater in the spring and summer months while SC reached their highest values during the autumn months. No differences were detected between breeds with respect to semen characteristics with the exception of ejaculate volume (p<0.05) and ejaculate appearance (p=0.053) which were greater in CB than in BG bucks. With the exception of ejaculate appearance, all semen characteristics were influenced by month of collection (p<0.05). Semen concentration and motility were better during the late summer and autumn months than during the spring. The percentage of abnormal spermatozoa declined from its greatest values in the spring to its lowest values in the autumn. Results of the present study show no effects of goat breed on most of the studied parameters. In general, most semen quality parameters were better in both breeds during the autumn than the spring months. Minimal variation in semen quality was observed between the summer and autumn months indicating the ability to use bucks for semen collection and for natural breeding during both of these seasons.

  • The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow of a non-Newtonian fluid through a bifurcated tube. All the process was based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. To define a non-Newtonian fluid, the following viscous models are used; the Powell-Eyring model, the modified Powell-Eyring model, the Cross model, the modified Cross model, the Carreau model, the Carreau-Yasuda model and the modified Power Law model. The flow calculation data using each model were compared with the other data of a existing paper. Finally, the Carreau model was recognized to give the best result with the SC/Tetra code, and the succeeding simulations are made with the model. For the pulsating flow condition, the sine wave type velocity profile is given as the inlet boundary condition. To investigate the effect of geometries and mesh, the pre-test is carried out with various curvature conditions of the bifurcated corner, and then with various mesh conditions. The final process is to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and the wall shear stress gradient (WSSG). To validate all the result, the simulation is compared with the existing data of the other papers. Generally speaking, there is a noticeable difference in the maximum and minimum value of WSS. It is not sure that the values in each data are on the exactly same location. However, the overall trend is similar. The next study needs to investigate the same situation by experimental method. Furthermore, if the flow is simulated with more pulsatile conditions, more data of flow field through a bifurcated tube could be achieved.

  • This study aims to provide basic data for soil packaging differing in accordance with the strength characteristics of mixed soil, using E.S.B. (Eco Soil Binder), an eco-friendly hardening agent, based on the type of soil. The soil used in this study is weathered granite soil readily collected in and around Korea, and is classified into SW, SP and SC according to soil classification systems. The test piece for the unconfined compressive strength test has dimensions of 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, with the mix ratio of E.S.B. proportional to the weight of mixed soil changed from 5% to 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, where compactness of 90% and 100% were applied according to each condition to analyze the unconfined compressive strength characteristics at material ages of 3, 7, and 28 days. Also, the ratio of soil packaging standard strength and unconfined compressive strength was calculated to determine the optimal E.S.B. mix ratio, whereby the field applicability of the unconfined compressive strength using the estimation equation of ACI209R was evaluated.

  • Three organic sensitizers, JK-128, JK-129, and JK-130 containing quinoline unit are designed and synthesized. Under standard global AM 1.5 solar condition, the JK-130 sensitized solar cell gave a short circuit photocurrent density of 11.52 mA $cm^{-2}$, an open circuit voltage of 0.70 V, and a fill factor of 0.75, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 6.07%. We found that the $\eta$ of JK-130 was higher than those of other two cells due to the higher photocurrent. The higher $J_{sc}$ value is attributed to the broad and intense absorption spectrum of JK-130.

  • The objective of this study is to get simulation data about pulsatile flow around an interior solid body inside a bifurcated tube. All the processes were based on CFD method, with a commercial FVM code, SC/Tetra ver. 6.0 for solving, and with CATIA R16 for generating geometries. The bifurcated tube models were drawn with the bifurcated angle of 45 degrees, considering Murray's law about the diameter ratio. With various locations of the object, the effects of flow on the drag were considered. For the pulsating flow condition, the velocity wave profile was given as the inlet boundary condition. To validate all the result, the simulation was compared with the existing data of the other papers first. Overall flow field of both data were similar, but there was some difference at a zero velocity. Therefore the next simulation was continued with the sine wave profiles where there is no negative flow, and then the data was compared with one of the pulmonary artery velocity where there is negative flow. The final process was to calculate flow variables such as the wall shear stress (WSS) and to compute the drag of the solid object.

  • Tributyl phosphate(TBP) is used in solvent extraction process for radioactive waste. This compound may be degraded to dibutyl phosphate($DBP^-$), monobutyl phosphate($MBP^{2-}$) and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ by radioactive material. Amount of $DBP^-$ and $MBP^{2-}$ in TBP must be monitored because they production of these compounds means degradation of which leads to a decrease in the extraction yield. Retention behavior for $DBP^-$, $MBP^{2-}$, $F^-$, $Cl^-$, ${NO_2}^-$, ${NO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ are studied with AS4A-SC(Dionex) analytical column and $Na_2CO_3$/NaOH eluent by Ion chromatography. Optimum condition for these anions is 2 mM $Na_2CO_3$/1 mM NaOH eluent. All anions by this condition is well separated within 15min. Dynamic range is $10{\mu}g/mL$ - $100{\mu}g/mL$ for DBP and $5{\mu}g/mL$ - $50{\mu}g/mL$ for $MBP^{2-}$, respectively. The Detection limit for AS4A-SC are $1{\mu}g/mL$ for $DBP^-$ and $0.5{\mu}g/mL$ for $MBP^{2-}$ in this system with a $25{\mu}L$ sample loop.
