Early sexual maturation through temperature stimulation was induced in female and male of yezo scallop. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female showed $9.12{\pm}2.9$ in January, $14.89{\pm}2.9$ in February and $21.3{\pm}1.4$ in March in experiment I. GSI in experiment I showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) and in experiments II and III were not show significant variations (P > 0.05). It also showed significant between the control and the experiments I, II, and III in February (P < 0.05) measurements. Experiment I has showed good results in sexual maturation and spawning when compared with other experiments II and III and the control. Histological observation showed that ovary condition was in a growing stage in all the experiments I, II, and III. In February, ovary condition through histological observation was a late mature stage in all the experiments I, II, and III except the control of a growing stage. GSI and gonad weight were $4.4{\pm}0.88$ and 2.8 g, respectively in November whereas it was $15.1{\pm}2.8$, and 11.7 g, respectively in January and $21.7{\pm}5.4$, and 19.4 g, respectively in February after rearing at a water bath of $12^{\circ}C$ depending on the condition of experiment I. It was possible early releasing of eggs and sperms of yezo scallop in February instead of the middle of April to the end of May being spawning period. Fertilized eggs have become a gastrula stage through a spiral cleavage and then become a trochophore larvae after 36 hours. After 10 days, D-shaped larvae have changed into an umbo stage larvae and attached to juveniles in the post larvae after 20-23 days.
We examined the effect of an artificial change of water temperature on the survival rate of Korean Scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis. As for the change of water temperature, the aspects appearing on the eastern coast of Korea during spring and summer were artificially prepared in the rearing aquarium in the laboratory. The survival rate of Scallop, due to the stimulus of a low water temperature in spring, was an average of 51.6%. Medium-sized scallops averaged 4.4%, which is lower than that of small-sized ones (85.82%) and large-sized ones (55.0%). The survival rate of Scallop, due to the stimulus of water at a high temperature in summer, was an average of 43.3%. As for small-sized scallops, they averaged a 46.7% survival rate which is lower than that of medium-sized scallops (60.0%). In general, the survival rate was lower in summer than in spring. Such results show that the death of Scallop, has close relevance to the change of water temperature. The low survival rate of medium-sized ones. Alternatively, medium-sized scallops have to get through winter, even if they cannot grow enough compared with large-sized ones. This is because large-sized scallops have already been adapted to the change of water temperature by getting through winter twice.
The seedlings of the scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, which were collected in April 1980, April 1981 and May 1981, and the grown-up scallops collected in the sea bottom in November 1979, were reared by hanging method up to the July 1981. The growth of the seedlings collected in April 1980 was greatly affected by the time of the seedling collection, manipulation of the net cage, density in the net cage and the annual water temperature fluctuation. The scallops reared from the spat collected in April 1980 reached the sizes of 0.33 mm, 1.23 mm, 29.34 mm and 59.59 mm in shell length in 40,75, 285 and 450 days respectively. Since then, growth rate was determined as follows based on the age estimated by the year rings on the shell:84.96mm in 19 months, 99.3mm in 31, 112.3mm in 37 and 113.64mm in 43 months. The meat and the adductor muscle weight increased with the shell length. The meat weight roached about 15g when the shell length was 60-70mm and about 94.13 g when 130-140mm, and the adductor muscle weight reached about 4.89 g when the shell length was 60-70 mm and about 39.59g when 120-130 mm. But the growths of the meat and the adductor muscle weight were in stagnancy after scallops reached 125 mm in shell length.

Scallop, Pectinopecten yessoenis(Jay), cultivated in the cold east coast of Kwangwon region, Korea, is expected be to produced about 50, 000 tons in the year 2000. Scallop, first of all should be exuviated to process for new goods. In this study, vacuum and nitrogen packagings were applied to extend the shelf-life of exuviated scallop boiled with steam for 10 min. Vacuum and nitrogen packagings retarded the decrease in pH, whereas inhibited the production of $NH_2-N, $ VBN, TMA, and TBA of exuviated scallop stored at $5^{\circ}C.$ They also inhibited the microbial growth. But, there was no significant difference in the bacteriostatic effects between both packaging methods. The estimated shelf-lives of boiled and exuviated scallops for control, vacuum, and nitrogen packagings were about 30, 36, and 36 days, respectively.
This paper examined the statistical goodness-of-fit tests for biological growth model in bioeconomic analysis. Some authors estimated usually growth function for fish in the world. However, few studies have estimated growth equations for the bivalve species. Thus, this paper studied the common functional forms of fitting growth equations for cham scallops considering environmental factors and production styles. The following functional forms are considered: linear, log-reciprocal, double log, polynomial and linear with interactions. Results of fitting these various functional forms with real data are compared and evaluated using standard statistical goodness-of-fit tests. Results also indicate that log-reciprocal function is statistically the best fit to the real data. Therefore, the log-reciprocal function is decided the best function describing cham scallop biological growth and hence might be useful for economic evaluation(i.e., optimal harvesting time).

The mass mortalities have been occurring of Korean scallop Patinopecten yessoensis from 1997's to now in Korea east sea. Cages behavior and interference effect (common name; curtain effect) between scallop cages were investigated in culture grounds on the eastern coastal waters of Korea for understand to mechanism of rising about mass mortalities of Korean scallop quickly. The first experiment was carried out in circulating water channel to assess inclination angel from relationship between velocity and cages interval, velocity with culture cages position. An angle of inclination of scallop culture cages were 94.6 to 92.3 degree under a several velocity which were from 0.1 m/s and 131.9 to 118.1 degree under 0.5 m/s with cages interval were 1 m, 94.3 to 91.0 degree under velocity is 0.1 m/s and 133.2 to 122.4 degree under 0.5 m/s with cages interval were 1.5 m and 94.6 to 96.4 degree under velocity is 0.1 m/s and 131.7 to 131.8 under 0.5 m/s with cages interval were 2 m. The second experiment was designed to prove the tank test. Velocities were measured inside and outside of the scallop culture ground at eastern sea of Korea. The velocity of inside of the culture was the slowest as 0.1m/s. In this result, interference between former cage and after cage was occurred.

In this study, we investigated the growth of striped mullet (Mugil cephalus), Yesso scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) and kelp (Saccharina japonica) farmed under the IMTA (integrated multi-trophic aquaculture) system developed by national institute of fisheries science (NIFS). The farmed striped mullets grew from an initial length and weight of $152.5{\pm}12.1mm$ and $41.6{\pm}7.8g$ in October 2013 to $154.2{\pm}5.6mm$ and $47.5{\pm}8.6g$ in November, $160.2{\pm}8.7mm$ and $55.9{\pm}9.1g$ in December and $168.4{\pm}9.6mm$ and $58.4{\pm}8.7g$ in January. The fish continued to grow and reached $190.2{\pm}9.4mm$ in length and $87.5{\pm}8.9g$ in weight in April and $256.4{\pm}9.7mm$ and $156.7{\pm}6.7g$ in October 2014. The daily growth rate (DGR) for total fish length was 0.015~0.1 mm/day during the periods of fast growth and attained 0.038~0.1 mm/day during February ~ March. The kelp grew from an initial blade length and wet weight of $1.19{\pm}0.2cm$ and $0.0028{\pm}0.0012g$ in January 2014 to $3.3{\pm}0.8cm$ and $2.5{\pm}0.9g$ in February and $126.5{\pm}11.6cm$ and $107.4{\pm}22.6g$ in March, after which, erosion occurred and slowed the growth. The DGRs for kelp length ranged 0.03~1.9 mm/day in January 2014 and increased to 0.88~1.9 mm/day during March~April. Increasing water temperatures beginning in April lowered the DGR to 0.03 mm/day. Yesso scallops grew from an initial shell length, shell height and wet weight of $11.83{\pm}0.6mm$, $12.68{\pm}0.7mm$ and in September 2013 to $19.9{\pm}2.5mm$, $20.8{\pm}2.6mm$ and $0.9{\pm}0.04g$ in November 2013. They continued to grow to $45.91{\pm}0.71mm$ in shell length, $42.55{\pm}0.8mm$ in shell height and $12.7{\pm}1.3g$ in wet weight by May 2014 and $60.2{\pm}2.51mm$, $554.6{\pm}2.61mm$ and $24{\pm}2.70g$ by October 2014. The DGRs for shell length of Yesso scallop ranged from 0.02 to 0.256 mm/day with higher values of 0.256~0.27 mm/day during November~December 2013 and March~April 2014.
The bactericidal effects of strongly acidic hypochlorous acid water (StAHA) and slightly acidic hypochlorous acid water (SlAHA) against Vibrio parahaemolyticus contaminated on surface of raw fish and shellfish were examined. V. parahaemolyticus contaminated with about 7.0 log CFU/g on the meat chunk of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), and yellow tail (Seriola quinqueradiata), and 4.0 log CFU/g on the shucked scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) were not detected after washing with StAHA and SlAHA at a ratio of 30:1 on a sample weight basis. However, 1.0 log CFU/g of V. parahaemolyticus was survived on shucked oyster (Crassostrea gigas) under same treatment conditions. The bactericidal effects of acidic hypochlorous acid water against V. parahaemolyticus contaminated on surface of shucked oyster were not as effective as those against V. parahaemolyticus contaminated on surface of meat chunk of olive flounder, yellow tail, and shucked scallop. Such differences can be attributed to the complicated surface conformation of oyster.
This study investigated spectroscopic characteristics of shell crystals of eight marine bivalve species using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis; moreover, the Family level relatedness of shellfish was investigated. In XRD analysis, the shells of Ruditapes philippinarum, Meretrix lusoria, Anadara granosa, and Fulvia mutica were found to have orthorhombic aragonite $CaCO_3$ crystals, while shells of Patinopecten yessoensis and Crassostrea gigas had trigonal-rhombohedral calcite crystals. The shells of Mytilus coruscus and Atrina pectinata were determined to have a mixture of aragonite and calcite crystals. XRD information revealed the Family level-specific characteristics of shellfish; the results agreed with the current taxonomic system. In conclusion, spectroscopic characteristics of shell crystals indicated Family-level characteristics of shellfish and suggested a more intense species-level investigation; this technology may be useful in identifying shellfish species using small quantities of shells.

NIFS conducted a feasibility study on the bay scallop Argopecten irradians aquaculture in the test site of Dongsanri, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do in June 2015. The transplantation for the test was also carried out in June. The average shell length was $5.79{\pm}0.6mm$ at the time, $15.83{\pm}0.8mm$ in July, $39.40{\pm}0.7mm$ in September, $55.72{\pm}5.8mm$ in November and $59.67{\pm}1.7mm$ in December. At the time of transplantation, the average shell height was $6.06{\pm}0.7mm$, and it grew to $16.40{\pm}0.9mm$ in July, $53.16{\pm}5.2mm$ in November and $55.80{\pm}2.9mm$ in December. Total weight was $0.78{\pm}0.5g$ in July but increased to $24.25{\pm}4.2g$ in November and $26.06{\pm}4.3g$ in December. The daily growth rate of shell length(DGR) was 0.33 mm / day in June, 0.43 mm / day in September and 0.13 mm / day in November. DGR of weight was 0.20 g / day in June, 0.27 g / day in September, 0.06 g / day in November. The relative growth of shell length and shell height was y = 0.9132x and $R^2=0.9923$. As a result, it was proved that bay scallop aquaculture is possible in Gangwon province, the northern part of the East Sea. This will definitely increase the income of fishermen by enabling them to culture more aquaculture species than the single large Patinopecten yessoensis in the region.
