In high-efficiency Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ solar cells, Na is doped into a Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ light-absorbing layer from sodalime-glass substrate through Mo back-contact layer, resulting in an increase of device performance. However, this supply of sodium is limited when the process temperature is too low or when a substrate does not supply Na. This limitation can be overcome by supplying Na through external doping. For Na doping, an NaF interlayer was deposited on Mo/glass substrate. A Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ absorber layer was deposited on the NaF interlayer by a three-stage co-evaporation process As the thickness of NaF interlayer increased, smaller grain sizes were obtained. The resistivity of the NaF-doped CIGS film was of the order of $10^3{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ indicating that doping was not very effective. However, highest conversion efficiency of 14.2% was obtained when the NaF thickness was 25 nm, suggesting that Na doping using an NaF interlayer is one of the possible methods for external doping.
The effects of ouabain and diphenylhydantoin on ATPase activity in rat erythrocyte membranes were studied and also influence of K on ATPase activity was studied. The ATPase activity of rat erythrocyte membrane has been shown to consist of two components. The first component requires the Mg but occurs in the absence of Na or K (Mg-ATPase) and is not inhibited by ouabain and stimulated by diphenylhydantoin. The second component requires the presence of Mg and also Na or K (Na-K-Mg-ATPase). It is inhibited by ouabain and is stimulated by diphenylhydantoin in low Na concentration and inhibited in high Na concentration. K inhibit Na-K-Mg-ATPase which is inhibited by ouabain. Ouabain and diphenylhydantoin show reversed effect to Na-K-Mg-ATPase activity. It suggest that the therapeutic effect of diphenylhydantoin on digitalis induced cardiac arrhythmia may be resulted from their effect on ion transport mechanism of cell membrance. And the relevance of these findings to the action of ouabain and diphenylhydantoin on membrane transport mechanism is discussed.
The zeolite X was prepared from the Korean natural clinoptilolite, which contains some mordenite. Thermal treatment removed the clinoptilolite structure from the ore remaining mordenite. The natural clinoptilolites dealuminated with 2N-8N HCI solution and/or thermal treatment were mixed with NaCl, $NaAlO_2$ and NaOH, and reacted to zeolites X at $95^{\circ}C$ for 12~36 hrs. Maximum yield of NaX was obtained for the reactant mixture of 25 gr of natural zeolite acidtreated with 8 N HCI, together with 3.5g NaCl, 8g $NaAlO_2$ and 50 ml of 6N NaOH at $95^{\circ}C$, for 24 hrs.
Intestinal phosphate (Pi) absorption across the apical membrane of small intestinal epithelial cells is mainly mediated by the type IIb Na-coupled phosphate co-transporter (NaPi-IIb), but its expression and regulation in the chicken remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the mRNA and protein levels of NaPi-IIb in three regions of chicken small intestine, and related their expression levels to the rate of net phosphate absorption. Our results showed that maximal phosphate absorption occurs in the jejunum, however the highest expression levels of NaPi-IIb mRNA and protein occurs in the duodenum. In response to a low-Pi diet (TP 0.2%), there is an adaptive response restricted to the duodenum, with increased brush border membrane (BBM) Na-Pi transport activity and NaPi-IIb protein and mRNA abundance. However, when switched from a low-(TP 0.2%) to a normal diet (TP 0.6%) for 4 h, there is an increase in BBM NaPi-IIb protein abundance in the jejunum, but no changes in BBM NaPi-IIb mRNA. Therefore, our study indicates that Na-Pi transport activity and NaPi-IIb protein expression are differentially regulated in the duodenum vs the jejunum in the chicken.

Novel mixed matrix membranes of Sodium Alginate (NaAlg) were developed by the incorporation ofunmodified, modified Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) then cross-linked with glutaraldehyde externally. These membranes were prepared by the solution casting technique. Pervaporation (PV) experiments have been performed with pure NaAlg, unmodified NaAlg-PMA5, NaAlg-PMA10, modified NaAlg-mPMA5, and NaAlg-mPMA10 (wt. % of PMA 5 and 10) at 30, 40 and $50^{\circ}C$, to separate water-isopropanol feed mixtures containing 10-30 wt. % of water. Pervaporation results of NaAlg-mPMA10 produced a highest separation factor of 9028 with a flux of $0.269kg/m^2.h$ for 10 wt. % of water containing feed mixture. Both separation factor and flux for water increased significantly with increasing content of mPMA into NaAlg; a significant improvement in PV performance was observed for NaAlg-mPMA5 and NaAlg-mPMA10 membranes when compared to pure NaAlg& PMA-5, PMA-10 membrane.
The interaction of $NpO^+_2$ with $Cl^-$ was studied using visible-near-infrared spectroscopy in $NaCl-Ca-Cl_2-NaClO_4$, $NaCl-NaClO_4$, and $CaCl_2-NaClO_4$ solutions with ionic strength (I) of 6M. The spectra of $NpO^+_2$ around 980 nm varied with $Cl^-$ concentration in the $NaCl-CaCl_2-NaClO_4$ and $NaCl-NaClO_4$ solutions at [$Cl^-$] ${\geq}3.5M$, but not in the $CaCl_2-NaClO_4$ solution. Assuming the 1:1 interaction between $NpO^+_2$ and $Cl^-$, the apparent equilibrium constants at I = 6M were evaluated. The presence of $Ca^{2+}$ was found to destabilize overall interaction between $NpO^+_2$ and $Cl^-$. The observations were consistent with the density functional theory calculation.
Background: Sputum decontamination with NALC-NaOH (N-acetyl-L-cysteine-sodium hydroxide) is known to better detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) by culture than that with using NaOH, which is widely used in Korean hospitals. In this report, sputum samples collected from pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients were treated with either NaOH or NALC-NaOH, and we compared the results of smear and culture positivity to determine whether the NALC-NaOH treatment method improves culture positivity in the sputum samples, and especially for those sputum samples that are smear negative and scanty. Methods: For each decontamination method, 436 sputum samples from pulmonary TB patients in the National Masan Tuberculosis Hospital were collected for this study. Sputum from a patient was collected two times for the first and second day of sampling time, and these samples were employed for the decontamination process by performing the 4% NaOH and NALC-2% NaOH treatment methods, respectively, for detecting M. tb by an AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli) smear and also by culture in solid Ogawa medium. Results: The NaOH and NALC-NaOH treatment methods did not significantly affect the AFB smear positivity of the sputum samples (33.0% vs 39.0%, respectively, p=0.078). However, the culture positive percents of M. tb in the Ogawa medium treated with NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 39.7% and 28.0%, respectively, which was a significantly different (p=0.0003). This difference in culture was more prominent in the sputum samples that were smear negative (the positive percents with NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 15.8% and 7.2%, respectively, p=0.0017) and scanty (NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 60.8% and 42.9%, respectively, p=0.036), but not for a smear that was 1+ or higher (p>0.05). Conclusion: NALC-NaOH treatment is better than NaOH treatment for the detection of M. tb by culture, but not by smear, and especially when the AFB smear is negative and scanty.
The $Na^+$-and $K^+$-induced $Ca^{++}$ release was measured isotopically by Milipore filter technique in mitochondria isolated from rabbit ventricles. The release of $Ca^{++}$ from mitochondria could be induced by 1-3 mM of $Na^+$ added in incubating medium under the presence of 0.5mM EGTA to prevent the released $Ca^{++}$ from rebinding with mitochondrial membrane. The amount of $Ca^{++}$ released was increased by increasing the concentration of $Na^+$ added. 100mM $K^+$, in itself, did not induce the $Ca^{++}$ release from cardiac mitochondria, the $Na^+$-induced $Ca^{++}$ release, however, was potentiated by the presence of $K^+$. The potentiation of $Na^+$-induced $Ca^{++}$ release by $K^+$ was proportional to the $Na^+/K^+$ ratio presented in the incubating medium. Among the monovalent cations other than $Na^+$, the release of $Ca^{++}$ from cardiac mitochondria was shared only by $Li^+$. The $Na^+$-induced $Ca^{++}$ release could be also observed in the mitochondria isolated from liver and kidney. However, the $Na^+$ sensitivity was somewhat lower in liver and kidney mitochondria than in heart mitochondria. The release of $Ca^{++}$ induced by $Na^+$ in the mitochondria isolated from the experimentally produced failured heart was not different from that in the normal heart mitochondria, and was not directly modified by $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}$ M of Ouabain. From the experiments, it was suggested that the $Ca^{++}$ released from mitochondria by $Na^+$ could be used in excitation-contraction coupling process to initiate the contraction of the cardiac myofibrils. Futhermore, it appeared that the phenomenon of $Ca^{++}$ release from cardiac mitochondria by $Na^+$ and $K^+$ might be related to the inotropic effect of digitalis glycoside which could bring about the increase of $Na^+$ or the reduction of $K^+$ intracellulary through the inhibition of $Na^+$, $K^+$-ATPase.

In order to elucidate the regulatory mechanism of intracellular calcium ion concentrations, contractions or contractures induced by $Na^{+}-removal$, calcium-application or ouabain-treatment as an index of $Na^+/Ca^{2+}$ exchange activity were studied in atrial muscle or vascular smooth muscle (aorta and renal artery) of the rabbit. The magnitude of low sodium contractures in atrial trabeculae increased with sigmoid shape when external sodium concentrations were reduced to sodium-free condition, whereas that of calcium contracture intensified in a parabolic pattern when external calcium concentrations were elevated to 8 mM. $Na^{+}-removal$ contractures were induced in a duration-dependent manner to $K^{+}-free$ exposure and same findings were observed with ouabain treatment. $Na^{+}-free$ contractures were not affected by verapamil treatment, but stimulated by $100{\mu}M\;Mn^{2+}$ and inhibited by high concentrations of $Mn^{2+}\;(2{\sim}8mM)$ in a dose-dependent manner. Ryanodine which is known to suppress the release of calcium from internal store abolished spontaneous twitch contractions induced by $K^{+}-free$ solution, but had no effect on the development $Na^{+}-free$ contractures. Na-free contractures were not always induced in vascular smooth muscle preparations. Contractures by $O\;mM\;Na^+$ were usually seen in aorta, but not often in renal artery.$50\;mM\;K^+$, noradrenaline (NA) and angiotensin II (AII) always evoked very large contraction in all preparations of vascular smooth muscle. Contractures developed by $O\;mM\;Na^+$ were not sensitive to verapamil treatment as in atrial trabeculae, but were abolished by $100{\mu}M\;Mn^{2+}$. In contrast to $Na^{+}-free$ contractures, $Mn^{2+}(100{\mu}M)$ had no effect on the contractures induced by NA or 50 mM$K^+$. Caffeine in the concentration of 10 mM evoked transient contracture in the distal renal artery. The rate of spontaneous relaxation in caffeine contracture was dependent upon the concentrations of external sodium, and had double component of relaxation when the rate of relaxation was plotted in the semilogarithmic scale of relative tension versus time. Especially late components of relaxation had more direct relation to $Na^+$ concentrations. It could be concluded that $Na^+/Ca^{2+}$ exchange mechanism in the heart has a large capacity, inhibited by $Mn^{2+}$ but not by verapamil and ryanodine, while $Na^+/Ca^{2+}$ exchange system in vascular smooth muscle has a very low capacity especially in small artery, inhibited by low concentration of $Mn^{2+}\;(100{\mu}M)$ but not affected by verapamil and ryanodine.
The effect of vanadate on the optimum pH of Na-K-ATPase was investigated. The results were as follows: 1) The optimum PH of Na-K-ATPase was shifted from PH 7.4 to 6.8 at 10 mM K by $5{\times}10^{-6}M$ vanadate. 2) The ratio of Na-K-ATPase activity at pH 6.8 and 7.4 increased with increasing vanadate concentration. 3) Inspite of the presence of $5{\times}10^{-6}M$ vanadate Na-K-ATPase activity at pH 7.4 was higher than that at pH 6.8 below 50 mM $Na^+$, and the ratio of Na-K-ATPase activity at pH 7,4 and 6.8 was higher than that of the control. 4) Na-K-ATPase activity at pH 7.4 was higher than that at pH 6.8 below 7mM $K^+$. 5) Optimum pH of Na-K-ATPase activity was shifted from pH 7.4 to 6.8 by $10^{-5}M$ vanadate at 5 mM $K^+$. 6) $K^+$-pNPPase activity increased with lowering of pH, and the degree of inhibition of $K^+$-pNPPase activity by $10^{-7}$M vanadate was decreased with lowering of pH. These results suggest that vanadate shifts the optimum pH of Na-K-ATPase activity to more acidic PH than PH 7.4. This effect may not be caused by the decrease in the inhibitory potency of vanadate itself to Na-K-ATPase by the change of medium pH, but mainly by the alteration of Na-and K-binding site, which appears in the presence of vanadate only.
