  • Limb scanning measurements of the O2 (0-0) Atmospheric band emission by the TIDI instrument aboard the TIMED satellite during 2003-2005 are analyzed to examine the tidal effects on their vertical emission rate according to the solar and geomagnetic activities. The data are restricted at latitudes $60^{\circ}S-60^{\circ}N$ to avoid the contributions by the auroral emission. The variation of the vertical emission rate in latitude and local time is summarized in the yaw periods. The vertical emission profiles of the O2 (0-0) Atmospheric band nightglow averaged in the $10^{\circ}$ latitude range are investigated. The result shows the inverse relationship between the peak emission height and the integrated brightness.

  • A hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method was performed to grow the $10~240\mu{m}$ thick GaN films on (111) spinel $MgAl_2O_4$ substrate. The GaN films on $MgAl_2O_4$ substrate revealed a photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of the impurity doped GaN by the out-diffusion and auto-doping of Mg from $MgAl_2O_4$ substrate during GaN growth. The PL spectrum measured at 10K consists of free and bound excitons related recombination transitions and impurity-related donor-acceptor pair recombination and its phonon replicas. However, the deep-level related yellow band emission was not observed. The peak energy of neutral donor bound excitonic emission and the frequency of Raman $E_2$ mode were exponentially decreased with increasing the GaN thicknesses. and the frequency of E, Raman mode was shifted with the relation of $\Delta$$\omega$=3.93$\sigma$($cm^{-1}$/GPa), where l1 (GPa) is the residual strain in the GaN epilayers.

  • With the effectuation of Kyoto Protocol on the United Nations Framework Convention on the Climate Change, the emission reduction of greenhouse gases became an urgent issue and has been competitively secured among countries as the form of certificates through clean development mechanism (CDM) or joint implementation (JI). Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) is one of the major greenhouse gases along with carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and methane ($CH_4$) having warming potential 310 times that of carbon dioxide and chemically very stable in the atmosphere to give a life time of more than 120 years so that it reaches to the stratosphere to act as an ozone depleting substance. $N_2O$ hardly decomposes and thus, besides to the adoption of thermal decomposition at high temperature, selective catalytic reduction methods are usually used at temperatures over $400^{\circ}C$ in which the presence of NOx acts as a major impeding material in the decomposition process. In this article, the sources of various $N_2O$ generation, catalytic reduction processes and the status and trends of emission trade with CDM projects for greenhouse gas reduction are summarized and discussed on a condensed basis.

  • The objectives of this research were focused on the effects of various operating parameters on nitrous oxide emission such as C/N ratio, ammonia concentration and HRT in the hybrid and suspension reactors. With the decreasing of C/N ratios, $N_2O$ emission rates in the both processes were increased because organic carbon source for denitrification was depleted. In case of biofilm reactor operated using medium, $N_2O$ release from the nitrification was not affected by the variation of ammonia concentration. But in the suspension reactor, $N_2O$ production from the nitrification was rapidly increased with the increase of ammonia. Nitrite accumulation caused by undesirable nitrification conditions could be a important reason for the increase in the $N_2O$ production from the aerobic reactor. And rapid increase in $N_2O$ production was reflected by the decrease of HRT, similar to the results observed in the results of ammonia loading changes. So it could be said that it is very important to put in consideration both its optimum conditions for wastewater treatment efficiency and suitable conditions for $N_2O$ diminish, simultaneously, in order to development an eco-friendly and advanced wastewater treatment, especially in BNR process.

  • Importance of climate change and its impact on agriculture and environment has increased with a rise of greenhouse gases (GHGs) concentration in Earth's atmosphere, which had caused an increase of temperature in Earth. Greenhouse gas emissions such as methane($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide($N_2O$) in the field need to be assessed. GHGs fluxes using chamber systems in the fields(2004~2005) with pepper cultivation were monitored at the experimental plots of National Academy of Agricultural Science(NAAS), Rural Development Administration(RDA) located in Suwon city. $N_2O$ emission during pepper growing period was reduced to 74.0~82.1% in sandy loam soil compared with those in clay loam soil. Evaluating $N_2O$ emission at different levels of soil water conditions, $N_2O$ emission at -50 kPa were lowered to 13.2% in clay loam soil and 40.2% in sandy loam soil compared with those at -30 kPa. $CH_4$ emission was reduced to 45.7~61.6% in sandy loam soil compared with those in clay loam soil. Evaluating $CH_4$ at different levels of soil water conditions, $CH_4$ emission at -50 kPa was lowered to 69.6% in clay loam soil and 55.8% in sandy loam soil compared with those at -30 kPa. It implied that -50 kPa of soil water potential was effective for saving water and reducing GHG emissions. From the path analysis as to contribution factors for $N_2O$ emission, it appeared that contribution rate was in the order of mineral N(51.2%), soil temperature (25.8%), and soil moisture content(23.0%) in clay loam soil and soil moisture content(39.3%), soil temperature (36.4%), and mineral N(24.3%) in sandy loam soil.

  • This research was conducted to examine the temporal methane ($CH_4$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission trends in livestock agriculture from year 1990 to 2011 with Tier 1 national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory reporting method, which was related to efforts of decreasing GHG emissions and to achievement of voluntary GHG mitigation target. Methane emissions from enteric fermentation were calculated with default $CH_4$ emission factors of IPCC. Methane and $N_2O$ emissions from manure treatment processes were calculated with Tier 1 and mixture of Tier 1 and Tier 2 including $N_2O$ emission factors of manure treatment systems and nitrogen excretion rate of livestock, respectively. According to 2013 National GHG Inventory Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification report, GHG emission fluctuations from enteric fermentation and manure treatment processes were similarto livestock head fluctuation. GHG emissions from enteric fermentation were mainly affected by beef cattle including Hanwoo, while manure treatment processes were affected by various livestock.

  • Atmospheric nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) level has been increasing at a rate of 0.2~0.3% per year. The rise in $N_2O$ concentration in atmosphere was mainly due to an increased application of nitrogen fertilizers. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of green manure crop and biochar on $N_2O$ emissions from upland crop field. The green manure crop used in the study was hairy vetch and the cultivated crop was red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Nitrogen was applied at a rate of $190kg\;ha^{-1}$, standard N fertilization rate for red pepper. Emissions of $N_2O$ from the field were reduced from the plots applied with hairy vetch and biochar by 46.5% and 24.6%, respectively, compared with nitrogen fertilizer treated plots with $N_2O$ emission of $1.14kg\;N_2O-N\;ha^{-1}$. The results from the study imply that green manure crop and biochar can be utilized to reduce greenhouse gas emission from the upland crop field.

  • We have synthesized a $Eu^{2{\cdot}}$ -activated $Sr_3MgSi_2O_8$ blue phosphor and $Ba^{2{\cdot}}$ co-doped $Sr_2SiO_4$ yellow phosphor investigated an attempt to develop white LEDs by combining it with a GaN blue LED chip. Three distinct emission bands from the GaN-based LED and the ($Sr_3MgSi_2O_8$:Eu + $Ba^{2{\cdot}}$ co-doped $Sr_2SiO_4$:Eu) phosphor are clearly observed at 405nm, 455 nm and at around 540 nm, respectively. These three emission bands combine to give a spectrum that appears white to the naked eye. Our results show that GaN (405 nm chip)-based ($Sr_3MgSi_2O_8$:Eu + $Ba^{2{\cdot}}$ co-doped $Sr_2SiO_4$:Eu) exhibits a better luminous efficiency than that of the industrially available product InGaN (460 nm chip)-based YAG:Ce.

  • Cropland is a major source of atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O) and we need technologies in the field of agriculture that can reduce the presence of N2O. In this study, a field experiment encompassing six treatments was conducted to determine the efflux of N2O in cropland during the growing season. An experimental plot was composed of two main sectors, no-tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT), which were subdivided into three plots according to types of nitrogen (N) sources: CF, chemical fertilizer; HV, hairy vetch+chemical fertilizer; and RY, rye+chemical fertilizer. The cumulative N2O emissions were 179.8 mg N2O m-2 for CF-CT, 108.1 mg N2O m-2 for HV-CT, 303.5 mg N2O m-2 for RY-CT, 86.7 mg N2O m-2 for CF-NT, 73.8 mg N2O m-2 for HV-NT, and 122.7 mg N2O m-2 for RY-NT during the fallow season. The CT, HV, and RY of no-tilled soils were reduced by 51.8, 31.7 and 59.6%, respectively (p<0.001). Our results indicate that the use of no-tillage and hairy vetch practice rather than conventional tillage and chemical fertilizer practice can decrease N2O emission.

  • In this study, we carried out the emissions analysis of CO and $non-CO_2$ for the age-classes of various pine trees(Pinus koraiensis, Pinus densiflora, Pinus rigida Mill., Pinus thunbergii Parl.) to estimate of emission factors of the crown layer and surface layer in the forest fire. We used the thermal characteristic analyzer cone heater and NDIR analyzer in order to measure amount of emission. As a result, the major emissions of Pinus koraiensis were $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ and that of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was only CO. The major emissions of the most of pine trees were NO and $N_2O$. The $CO_2$ emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was the highest about as $7.26{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}1.63{\times}10^{-1}g$ and next came Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida Mill.. And the CO emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was about $5.14{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.58{\times}10^{-3}g$ and followed by Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida Mill.. The emissions of $CH_4$, NO, and $N_2O$ showed small differences between species and the emission of $CH_4$ was $8.37{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}2.55{\times}10^{-4}g$, and NO was $6.65{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}2.0{\times}10^{-4}g$ and $N_2O$ was $1.42{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}2.09{\times}10^{-3}g$ in all species. Particularly, the emission of Pinus thunbergii Parl. was the highest in all pine trees except $CH_4$.
