  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) in museum is very important for protection of cultural properties. In our study, we measured air pollutants($NO_x, NH_3, SO_2, O_3$, CO, $CO_2$, TSP), temperature and humidity to evaluate IAQ of national central museum. Indoor carbon dioxide and TSP concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations. Temperature, huinidity and TSP had large deviation depending on air conditioning operates or not. Indoor gas phase pollutants except $CO_2$ were lower than outdoor concentrations, but $SO_2$ concentration was high in storage. $CO_2$ and TSP were influenced by the number of spectators.

  • Dissolution of Antheraea pernyi silk fiber was carried out in a zinc nitrate 6 hydrate (Zn(NO$_3$)$_2$ㆍ6$H_2O$) solution with various dissolving conditions. The solubility was significantly dependent on the concentration of zinc nitrate, dissolving temperature and time. Regenerated A. pernyi silk fibroin powder was obtained through dialysis process to remove chaotropic salt. FTIR and X-ray diffractometer showed that the conformation of regenerated A. pernyi silk powder was sheet structure.

  • In this study, the extent of plasmid DNA damage was observed according to concentration of BSH(Boron Sulfhydryl Hydride) and irradiation doses of neutron and ${\gamma}$-ray. The plasmid used was both pBR 322 (2870 bp) and ${\Phi}X174$ RF(5386 bp) DNA. Plasmid DNA damage by irradiation in the presence of BSH was analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. In the neutron experiment, DNA damage of both plasmid DNAs was increased according to increasing the concentration of BSH and neutron doses. But in the ${\gamma}$-ray experiment, there appeared no dose dependency as compared to the neutron experiment. The extent of the plasmid DNA damage in the presence of BSH was somewhat different according to irradiation by neutron or ${\gamma}$-ray.

  • In present work, the anti-bacterial effect of silver/activated carbon (Ag/C) composites prepared by the ${\gamma}$-irradiation of $AgNO_3$ solution on Escherichia coli (E. coli) has been studied. Characteristics of the Ag/C composites were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The inhibitory concentration of E. coli was found to be 0.387 ppm and the sterilizing concentration for the tested organism was 1.017 ppm. These results support the evidence that Ag/C composites have strong antibacterial activity to E. coli.

  • The AlCrN films were grown by RF reactive sputtering method under the selected conditions. The Cr concentration was varied by the number of Cr pieces placed on the Al target. The sample quality has been studied by XRD, Auger spectroscopy, optical absorption and electrical resistant measurements. The XRD and Auger results show that the samples consist of a major phase with the $Al_{1-x}Cr_xN$ formula, which has a hexagonal structure, and a few percents at. of oxygen, which may form $Al_2O_3$. There exist the Cr clusters in the samples with high concentration of Cr. The optical absorption measurement provides the information about the band gap that relates strongly to the quality of samples. The quality of samples is also clearly reflected in electrical measurement, i.e., the temperature dependence of resistance exhibits a semiconductor characteristic only for the samples that have no Cr cluster. In these cases, the values of ionization energies $E_a$ can be derived from R(T) plots by using the function R(T) = Ro exp $(E_a/k_BT)$.

  • A method is described for the fluorimetric determination of nickel, based on the formation of $Ni(II)-\alpha-(2-Benzimidazolyl)-\alpha'$, $\alpha''$ -(N-5-Nitro-2-Pyridylhydrazone)-toluene complex in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant. The complex has practically no fluorescence in the absence of surfactant, but the addition of Triton X-100 makes possible the fluorimetric determination of low concentrations of Ni(II) as it enhances the fluorescenceintensity of the complex by up to about 5-fold. This method is very sensitive and selectrive for the direct determination of nickel ion. The optimum conditions are a Triton X-100 concentration of 2.0 mL(5.0%, v/v) and pH $9.0\pm0.2(ammonium$ chloride-ammonia buffer). The fluorescence is measured at 337 nm of emission wavelength under 300 nm of excitation wavelength. The fluorescence intensity is a linear function of the concentration of Ni(II) in the range 5-70 ng/mL, and the detection limit is 2.0 nm/mL. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of Ni(II) in food and human hair samples.

  • Calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$) films were formed by an eco-friendly electro-chemical technique on steel substrates in synthesized distilled water solutions containing $NaHCO_3$, $CaCl_2$ and $MgCl_2$ with different ratio respectively. It was investigated to confirm the effect of $Mg^{2+}$ concentration by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy(EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) respectively. From an experimental result, only calcite crystals were found in solution containing no $Mg^{2+}$. By increasing concentration of $Mg^{2+}$, deposition rate decreased and crystal structure was transformed form calcite to aragonite. In case of including $MgCl_2$ 300mM in synthesized solutions containing $NaHCO_3$, $CaCl_2$ 60mM, it was showed over the 90% of aragonite contents which have quite high deposition rate of aragonite. Also, it was confirmed that $Mg^{2+}$ acted as inhibitor on the films which made transforming from calcite to aragonite.

  • Concentrations of the atmospheric radon and gaseous pollutants were measured at the Gosan site on Jeju Island from 2010 to 2015, in order to observe their time-series variation characteristics and examine the concentration change related to the airflow transport pathways. Based on the realtime monitoring of the atmospheric radon and gaseous pollutants, the daily mean concentrations of radon ($^{222}Rn$) and gaseous pollutants($SO_2$, CO, $O_3$, $NO_x$) were $2,400mBq\;m^{-3}$ and 1.3, 377.6, 41.1, 3.9 ppb, respectively. On monthly variations of radon, the mean concentration in October was the highest as $3,033mBq\;m^{-3}$, almost twice as that in July ($1,452mBq\;m^{-3}$). The diurnal variation of radon concentration shows bimodal curves at early morning (around 7 a.m.) and near midnight, whereas its lowest concentration was recorded at around 3 p.m. Several gaseous pollutants($SO_2$, CO, $NO_x$) showed a similar seasonal variation with radon concentration as high in winter and low in summer, whereas the $O_3$ concentrations had a bit different seasonal trend. According to the cluster back trajectory analysis, the frequencies of airflow pathways moving from continental North China, East China, Japan and the East Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and North Pacific Ocean routes were 36, 37, 10, 13, and 4%, respectively. When the airflow were moved to Jeju Island from continental China, the concentrations of radon and gaseous pollutants were relatively high. On the other hand, when the airflows were moved from North Pacific Ocean and East Sea, their concentrations were much lower than those from continental China.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the relationship between the energy value and the nitrogen content in the rat urine. Thirteen rats for ad libitum feeding group and 16 rats for two-meal group were employed in this experiment. The experimental period consisted of 22 days with a preliminary period of 10 days. During the last eight days of the experiment the urine was collected quantitatively. The rats fed two-meal per day excreted significantly (p<0.005) more nitrogen and energy in the urine than those fed ad libitum. A linear relationship between the energy concentration and nitrogen content was found. The urinary energy value was increased as the urinary nitrogen content was increased. A prediction equation was derived to compute the energy value from the content of nitrogen as follows: Y=8.924X+0.182 $S_{y{\cdot}x}=0.788$ where Y=urinary energy(kcal/100 ml) X=urinary nitrogen(gm/100 ml) Since the standard deviation of estimate is in small magnitude (0.788 kcal) when it is compared with the amount of intake of gross energy, digestible energy or metabolizable energy, this equation can be used safely to estimate the energy value from nitrogen content. Consequently, considerable amound of time and labor for the actual determination of energy can be saved. The ratio of energy to nitrogen was found to be 9.4 for ad adlibitum group and 8.6 for two-meal group. No significant difference between two group in this respect was observed.

  • The effect of dose enhancement was evaluated using Snyder head phantom, dependence on size of gold nanoparticle and material concentration in megavoltage X, ${\gamma}$-ray. Monte Carlo simulation using MCNPX was used for 4, 6, 10, 15 MV and Co-60 ${\gamma}$-ray. Described the tumor in Snyder head phantom, gold nanoparticle of 25, 75, 125nm diameter was inserted inside tumor. Concentration of dose enhancement material was used for 5, 15, 25 mg/g and dose enhancement factor was calculated on the basis of the no dose enhancement material. The lower incident energy and the higher concentration of material were that high dose enhancement factor is indicated. The size of gold nanoparticle had relatively high dependence on lower incident energy and higher concentration of material. It will increase dose inside the tumor, and be additional effect of use of gold nanoparticles in radiation therapy.
