  • Oxides of nitrogen (NO$_x$) in exhaust gases was determined by absorbing the gas in alkaline peroxide solution containing 0.03${\%}$ H2O2 and 0.1N NaOH. About 100 ppm of NO$_x$ was rapidly oxidized to NO$_2$ or N$_2$O$_5$ by H$_2$O$_2$ and required a contact time of 2 minutes with the absorbing solution for complete absorption. With vigorous shaking including air or oxygen gas, high concentration of NO$_x$ (>200 ppm) can be absorbed within 30 minutes. The remaining H$_2$O$_2$ affect the absorbance of color solution strongly. However, the excess H$_2$O$_2$ was completely decomposed by zinc powder 0.5g and the sample solution should be adjusted to the pH range 6.1∼6.6 before the reduction so that conversion of nitrate to nitrite ion is possible. The absorbed NO$_x$ is determined colorimetrically by the diazotization-coupling method with sulfonilamide and NEDA as the coupling agent. The sensitivity of the new method was 4.48 ${\times}$ 10$^4$ as molar absorptivity which was high sensitive compared with that obtained for the usual zinc reduction NEDA method with O$_3$. This method was far more rapid, brief and accurate than previously published O$_3$-NEDA method in Korean industrial standard.

  • The effects of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions under four kinds of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle. four-cylinder. swirl chamber type. water-cooled diesel engine with scrubber EGR system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop the scrubber exhaust gas Recirculation (EGR) control system for reducing $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ emissions. And a novel diesel soot-removal device of cylinder-type scrubber with five water injection nozzles is specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The influences of cooled EGR and water injection. however. would be included within those of scrubber EGR system. In order to survey the effects of cooled EGR and moisture on $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions. the intake mixtures of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas are heated up using a heater with five heating coils equipped in a steel drum. It is found that intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations are decreased, especially at higher loads. as EGR rate and intake mixture temperature are increased at the same conditions of engine speed and load. and that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ emissions are decreased. while soot emissions are increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations and the increase in equivalence ratio. Thus ond can conclude that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions are considerably influenced by the cooled EGR.

  • Removal of NO contained in automobile exhaust gas was accomplished by the non-selective catalyst reduction method. The catalysts were prepared through loading of a specific amount of Ag into ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The conversion of $NO_x$ was studied by varying the temperatures, $O_2$ concentrations and $SO_2$ concentrations for the prepared catalysts. The influence of the structure of catalyst to $NO_x$ conversion was followed through the analysis of the physical properties of the prepared catalysts. Experiments were conducted on each of the catalysts by varying the reaction conditions to find an optimum condition. The catalyst $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ shows a highest $NO_x$ conversion when the Ag content was 2 wt% and a reaction temperature of about $450^{\circ}C$. and after conducting the experiments, samples of before and after experiments analyzed using XRD, XPS, TPR, and UV-Vis DRS experiments. The result indicated that when Ag oxide content could not be maintained well at high temperatures $NO_x$ conversion decreased.

  • The patient was a 42-year-old female with breast cancer who had an implantable central venous catheter inserted percutaneously into left subclavian vein for chemotherapy. The postinsertion chest x ray revealed that there was no compressive sigh of catheter. Three months after insertion of the catheter, the patient was admitted to the hospital for 4th chemotherapy. The port was accessed but blood could not be aspirated and the catheter could not be flushed. A chest x ray revealed that the catheter was completely transected at the point where the catheter passed under the clavicle. Percutaneous removal of the distal fragment of the catheter was accomplished. The patient was discharged after successful removal of fragment of catheter.

Characteristics of Silver Ion-Exchange and Methyl Iodide Adsorption at High Temperature Condition by Surface-Modified Natural Zeolite (표면개질 천연제올라이트를 이용한 은이온 교환 및 고온공정에서 메틸요오드 흡착특성)

  • The removal of radioactive organic iodide generated from high temperature process in nuclear facility was generally performed by silver ion-exchanged synthetic zeolite (AgX). The purpose of this study is to obtain fundamental data for the substitution of natural zeolite(NZ) in stead of synthetic zeolite as supporter for the removal of methyl iodide in high temperature conditions. Therefore, NZ was modified with NaCl, $NaNO_3$ solution, and the analysis of the physical or surface characteristics through XRD, SEM-EDAX, and BET analysis was performed. In order to obtain the optimal surface-modification condition of NZ, adsorption capacities at $150^{\circ}C$ on surface-modified silver ion-exchanged NZ prepared with the variation of solution concentration were evaluated. The optimal condition of surface modification is that concentration of $NaNO_3$ and $AgNO_3$ are 1N and 1.2N, respectively(namely Ag-SMNZ). The adsorption isotherm of methyl iodide on Ag-SMNZ in a range of $100^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ was obtained, which is similar to that of 13X, and the maximum adsorption amount of Ag-SMNZ reached approximately 50% that of AgX. It would be evaluated that the adsorption capacity at $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ is relatively higher than other temperature, and the chemisorption between silver and iodide is attributed to a strong binding even after desorption test.

The influence of intentional mobilization of implant fixtures before osseointegration (골유착전 임플란트 고정체의 의원성 동요가 골결합에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of mobilization on bone-implant interface prior to osseointegration of fixtures. Materials and methods: The experimental implants (3.75 mm in diameter, 4.0 mm in length) were made of commercially pure (Grade IV) titanium, and were treated with RBM ($MegaGen^{(R)}$: Ca-P). The 80 implants (two in each tibia) were inserted into the monocortical tibias of 20 rabbits which each weighed more than 3.5 kg (Female, New Zealand White). According to the removal torque interval, the groups were divided into 10 groups, Group I (6 wks), Group II (4 days+6 wks), Group III (4 days+1 wk+6 wks), Group IV (1 wk+6 wks), Group V (1 wk+1 wk+6 wks), Group VI (2 wks+6 wks), Group VII (2 wks+ 1 wk+6 wk), Group VIII (3 wks+6 wks), Group IX (3 wks+1 wk+6 wks) and Group X (10 wks). The control groups were Group I and X, the removal torque was measured at 6 wks and 10 wks with a digital torque gauge (Mark-10, USA). In the experimental groups, the removal torque was given once or twice before the final removal torque and the value was measured each time. After which, the implants were put back where they had been except the control groups. All the experimental groups were given a final healing time (6 wks) before the final removal torque test, in which values were compared with the control groups and the 1st and/or 2nd removal torque values in each experimental group. Results: In the final removal torque tests, the removal torque value of Group X (10 wks) was higher than that of Group I (6 wks) in the control groups but not statistically different. There were no significant differences between the experimental groups and control groups (P>.05). In the first removal torque comparison, the experimental groups (4 days or 1 wk) values were significantly lower than the other experimental groups (2 wks or 3 wks). In the comparison of each experimental group according to healing time, the final removal torque value was significantly higher than the 1st torque test value. Conclusion: Once or twice mobilization of fixture prior to osseointegration did not deter the final bone to implant osseointegration, if sufficient healing time was given.

Effect of Removal of Power Plant Emissions on the characteristics of Ozone Concentration Changes in Summer (화력발전소 배출량 제거에 따른 여름철 O3 농도의 변화 특성)

  • In this study, the changes in ozone (O3) concentrations due to the removal of power plant emissions were analyzed using a community multi-scale air quality (CMAQ) model. Two different CMAQ model simulations, one considering the emissions from the Hadong power plant and one without considering the emissions, were conducted to investigate the effect of the emissions on the changes in the O3 concentrations in the surrounding areas. Subsequently, the CMAQ simulations exhibited an increase in the O3 concentration (25.24%) despite a decrease in the NOx (-18.87%) and volatile organic carbon (VOC, -11.27%) concentrations, which are major O3 precursors. The changes in the NO and O3 concentrations due to the removal of power plant emissions presented a strong negative correlation (r= -0.72). This indicated that the increase in the O3 concentration was mainly attributed to the significantly decreased NO concentration, thus, mitigating the O3 titration reaction (NO+O3→NO2+O2). Additionally, due to the VOC-limited (i.e., NOx-saturated) conditions in the study region, NO affected the O3 concentration, indicating that the O3 concentrations in a particular region are not only proportional to the increase or decrease in emissions. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the chemical O3 production and loss in a particular region is necessary to accurately evaluate the effect of emission control on the changes in the O3 concentration.

Removal of $NO_x$ by using of $TiB_2$ Photocatalysis ($TiB_2$ 광촉매를 이용한 $NO_x$ 제거)

  • This research was performed to purify water quality through removing T-N, and T-P and to estimating rate of $NO_x$ by the response of photocatalyst using ceramics. The ceramics was a mixtures of Titanium Diboride($TiB_2$) which is used to develop armored cars with excellent protective power and lightness, Olivine, and Hwangto with water and was furnaced for an hour at $1160^{\circ}C$. Hwangto and Olivine used in the study are produced at Haenam-gun, Jeonnam, and Andong-city, Gyeongsangbuk-do, respectively. The ground Hwangto and Olivine were seived through PR $100{\times}200$, and $TiB_2$ was a product of SIGMA ALDRICH. The experiment was performed under the sunlight, Mass flow controller was used for constant flow to pass through the pyrex reactor which was fully charged with furnaced ceramics. The concentration of $NO_2$ gas passed through the pyrex reactor was measured by Multi Gas Monitor. The reaction took for 60 minutes, The material was exposed to sunlight for 40 minutes. The sunlight was interrupted before and after the exposure for 10 minutes. The result showed that the concentration of $NO_2$ gas of the ceramics with $TiB_2$ and without $TiB_2$ became reduced and then maintained the same concentration under the sunlight, and became increased when the sunlight is interrupted. The $NO_2$ removing efficiency of the ceramics mixed with $TiB_2$ was 14~43% higher than that of the ceramics without $TiB_2$ under the sunlight. The study showed that the removing rate of $NO_2$ was 80% when the mixture rate of Hwangto, Olivine, and $TiB_2$ was 68%, 30% and 2%.

The Analysis of NBOD from Sewer Outflow in Winter Season by the COD Fractions using the Respirometry and Process Simulations (미생물호흡률 측정에 의한 COD분액과 공정모사를 이용한 동절기 하수유출수의 NBOD 발생원인 분석)

  • In this work, the presence of nitrification biochemical oxygen demand (NBOD) frequently occurred in the sewer outflow in winter season was analysed by the COD fraction methods using the respirometry and process simulations with real operation data measurements and analysis. The activated sludge models applied in this process simulation were based on the ASM No.2d temp. models, published by International Association on Water Quality (IAWQ). The ASM No.2d model is an extension of the ASM No.2 model and takes into account of carbon removal, nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal. The denitrifying capacity of phosphorus accumulating organisms has been implemented in the ASM No.2d model because experimental evidence shows that some of the phosphorus accumulating organisms can denitrify. It was shown that the concentrations of autotrophs (X_AUT) in the secondary clarifier and the $NH_4-N$ of T-N increased in the presence of NBOD measurements. Because of the low temperature (average $8^{\circ}C$) and possible operational troubles, the outcoming autotrophs exhausted oxygen in the process of nitrifying $NH_4-N$.
