The preparation of $\beta$-SiAlON powder by SHS in the system of $Si-Al-SiO_2-NH_4F(\beta-Si_3N_4)$ was investigated in this study. In the preparation of SiAlON powder, the effect of gas pressure, compositions such as Si, $NH_4F$, \beta-Si_3N_4$ and additive in mixture on the reactivity were investigated. At 50 atm of the initial inert gas pressure in reactor, the optimum composition for the preparation of pure $\beta$-SiAlON was $3Si+Al+2SiO_2+NH_4F$. The $\beta$-SiAlON powder synthesized in this condition was a single phase $\beta$-SiAlON with a rod like morphology.

Theoretical studies on the un-catalyzed and catalyzed aminations of ketene with $NH_3$ and $(NH_3)_2$, respectively, were studied using MP2 and hybrid density functional theory of B3LYP at the 6-31+G(d,p) and 6- 311+G(3df,2p) basis sets in the gas phase and in benzene and acetonitrile solvents. In the gas phase reaction, the un-catalyzed mechanism was the same as those previously reported by others. The catalyzed mechanism, however, was more complicated than expected requiring three transition states for the complete description of the C=O addition pathways. In the un-catalyzed amination, rate determining step was the breakdown of enol amide but in the catalyzed reaction, it was changed to the formation of enol amide, which was contradictory to the previous findings. Starting from the gas-phase structures, all structures were re-optimized using the CPCM method in solvent medium. In a high dielectric medium, acetonitrile, a zwitterions formed from the reaction of $CH_2$=C=O with $(NH_3)_2$, I(d), exists as a genuine minimum but other zwitterions, I(m) in acetonitrile and I(d) in benzene become unstable when ZPE corrected energies are used. Structural and energetic changes induced by solvation were considered in detail. Lowering of the activation energy by introducing additional $NH_3$ molecule amounted to ca. −20 $\sim$ −25 kcal/mol, which made catalyzed reaction more facile than un-catalyzed one.
Conducting polymer-coated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by template polymerization in order to enhance their gas sensitivity. This investigation of the conducting polymer phases that formed on the surface of the MWCNTs is based on field-emission scanning electron microscopy images. The thermal stability of the conducting polymer-coated MWCNTs was significantly improved by the high thermal stability of MWCNTs. The synergistic effects of the conducting polymer-coated MWCNTs improve the gas-sensing properties. MWCNTs coated with polyaniline uniformly show outstanding improvement in gas sensitivity to $NH_3$ due to the synergistic combination of efficient adsorption of $NH_3$ gas and variation in the conduction of electrons.
Carbon nanotubes(CNT) were synthesized by arc-discharge method. To fabricate CNT sensor, CNT powder was dispersed in $\alpha$-Terpinol($C_{10}$$H_{17}$OH) solution. The CNT films were fabricated by screen printing on the interdigitated Pt/Pd alloy electrode. The microstructure of CNT film were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to investigate the gas sensing characteristics of the film, the CNT film was experimented to measure NH$_3$ response and recovery time. And this sensor shows better reproductibility and faster recovery time than another CNT sensors. We suggest the possibility to utilize a CNT as new sensing materials for environmental monitoring.

Nitriding treatments were conducted on tool steel (SKD 61) at a temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr using high vacuum direct current (DC) plasma, with ammonia and argon as source gases. The structural and compositional changes produced in the nitrided layers by applying different ratios of Ar to $NH_{3}\;(n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}) were investigated using glancing x-ray diffraction (GXRD), optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), micro-Vickers hardness testing, and pin-on-disc type tribometer. Nitriding case depths of around of $50{\mu}m$ were produced, varying slightly with different ratios of $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}. It was found that the specimen surface hardness was 1150 Hv with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=1, increasing to a maximum value of 1500 Hv with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=5. With a further increase in ratio to $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}=10, the surface hardness of the specimen reduced slightly to a value of 1370 Hv. These phenomena were caused by changes of the crystallographic structure of the nitride layers, i.e the $\gamma'-Fe_{4}N$ phase only was observed in the sample treated with $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}$=1, and the intensity of the $\gamma'-Fe_{4}N$ phase were reduced but new phase of $\varepsilon'-Fe_{3}N$, which was known as a high hardness, with increasing $n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}. Also, the relative weight loss of counterface of the pin-on-disc with unnitrided steel was 0.2. And that of nitrided steel at a gas mixture ($n_{Ar}/n_{NH3}) of 1, 5, 7, and 10 was 0.4, 0.7, 0.6, and 0.5 mg, respectively. This means that the wear resistance of the nitrided samples could be increased by a factor of 2 at least than that of unnitrided steel.
Ammonia in water which is toxic to human, its concentration is regulated below 0.5 mg/L in drinking water. Current study aimed to develop appropriate models for ammonia stripping using hollow fiber membrane contactor. Two different models were developed during the study. Model 1 was assumed only free ammonia ($NH_3$) transfer in stripping process, whereas the Model 2 was assumed with total ammonia ($NH_3+{NH_4}^+$) transfer. Ammonium chloride ($NH_4CI$), sodium hydroxide(NaOH) were used to make ammonia solution, which was concentration of 25 mg as N/L at a pH of 10.5. The experimental conditions were such that, the liquid flow was in tube-side in upward direction and t he gas flow was on shell-side in downward direction a t room temperature. The experimental and modeling results showed that marginal difference were observed at low gas flux. However the difference between the both models and experimental value were increased when the gas flux was increased. The study concludes that the Model 1 with free ammonia is more appropriate when both models were compared and useful in ammonia stripping process at low gas flux.
Micro-electronic gas sensor devices were developed for the detection of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia (NH3), and formaldehyde (HCHO), as well as binary mixed-gas systems. Four gas sensing materials for different target gases, Pd-SnO2 for CO, In2O3 for NOx, Ru-WO3 for NH3, and SnO2-ZnO for HCHO, were synthesized using a sol-gel method, and sensor devices were then fabricated using a micro sensor platform. The gas sensing behavior and sensor response to the gas mixture were examined for six mixed gas systems using the experimental data in MEMS gas sensor arrays in sole gases and their mixtures. The gas sensing behavior with the mixed gas system suggests that specific adsorption and selective activation of the adsorption sites might occur in gas mixtures, and allow selectivity for the adsorption of a particular gas. The careful pattern recognition of sensing data obtained by the sensor array made it possible to distinguish a gas species from a gas mixture and to measure its concentration.
Gas identification techniques using pattern recognition methods were developed from four micro-electronic gas sensors for noxious gas mixture analysis. The target gases for the air quality monitoring inside vehicles were two exhaust gases, carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and two odor gases, ammonia (NH3) and formaldehyde (HCHO). Four MEMS gas sensors with sensing materials of Pd-SnO2 for CO, In2O3 for NOX, Ru-WO3 for NH3, and hybridized SnO2-ZnO material for HCHO were fabricated. In six binary mixed gas systems with oxidizing and reducing gases, the gas sensing behaviors and the sensor responses of these methods were examined for the discrimination of gas species. The gas sensitivity data was extracted and their patterns were determined using principal component analysis (PCA) techniques. The PCA plot results showed good separation among the mixed gas systems, suggesting that the gas mixture tests for noxious gases and their mixtures could be well classified and discriminated changes.
As high-tech science has developed, the need of semiconductor is required constantly. However, there are many processes which use a great deal of poisonous gas in the semiconductor process, so the dangerousness by a gas leak is latent in these processes. Especially, the accident of toxic gas is almost made by ammonia and chlorine. Therefore this report estimates the damage by the leak of ammonia and chlorine used in LPCVD system.

A package type of SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system that was proposed for removing the $NO_x$ found in flue gas from the small scale of air pollution sources was evaluated. The efficiency of the SCR system is determined by the proper utilization of catalytic media installed inside of the system, and the proper distribution of flow velocity and $NH_3$ concentration in the flue gas is a crucial factor for using the catalytic media. In this study, the distributions of $NH_3$ concentration were estimated under the various arrays and shapes of AIG at the given gas flow condition. The value of RMS (%) in $NH_3$ concentration is 95.3% at co-current flow (at $0^{\circ}$) injection but it is 90.1% at the condition of counter-current flow (at $120^{\circ}$) condition, which implies the counter-current injection is more favorable. By rearranging the $NH_3$ injection flow rates based on the distribution of velocity and $NH_3$ distribution in basic calculation, the value of RMS (%) in $NH_3$ concentration was reduced to 62.8%. The enhanced effect of $NH_3$ mixing by the combined effect of arrays and shapes are complied in the study.
