  • The thickness, loading, and broadband noise generated from the trailing edge of the UH-1H main rotor are numerically compared each other. The Kocureck and Tangler's prescribed wake model is adopted to represent the wake geometry during the hovering motion. Three tip Mach numbers of $M_{T}$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8, are selected to analyze the effects of different tip Mach numbers. At $M_{T}$ = 0.8, in considering the A-weighting and audible frequency band, the random noise is smaller than the tonal noises such as the thickness and the loading noise which have the low frequency characteristics. Especially most of the random noise frequency spread on the ultrasound region. On the other hand, below $M_{T}$ = 0.4, the band of random noise moves to the audible frequency region, and the random noise becomes larger than the tonal noise. It turns out that the random noise analysis of the rotor should be necessary at low speed operating condition.

  • Objectives : Ulcerative colitis is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease in the gastrointestinal tract. We investigated whether Aurantii fructus immaturus (AFI) pharmacopuncture has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Methods : in vitro experiments, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, prevention on $H_2O_2$-induced cell death in RAW264.7 cell line, DNA fragmentation, and cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA expression induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), were analyzed to investigate antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect of AFI pharmacopuncture. in vivo experiment, a murine model of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis was used to examine the effect of AFI pharmacopuncture on CV12 at different doses of 5 ${\mu}l$, 0.5 ${\mu}l$, 0.05 ${\mu}l$ for 10 days. Body weight, colon length and macroscopic features were investigated. Results : AFI pharmacopuncture showed DPPH free radical scavenging and SOD active effects in a dose-dependent manner. AFI pharmacopuncture showed a protective effect against $H_2O_2$-induced cell injury and also attenuated LPS-induced COX-2 mRNA expression. In a DSS- induced colitis murine model, however, AFI pharmacopuncture at CV12 had no anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions : The present results suggest that AFI pharmacopuncture extract may have anti- inflammatory and antioxidative effects in vivo test, but further research on the underlying mechanism is required.

  • In this study, a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the drained triaxial tests were performed on Pocheon granite soil with various the dry densities of $16.67kN/m^3$, $17.26kN/m^3$ and $17.65kN/m^3$. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. The soil parameters such as kur and n related to elastic behavior, m and ${\eta}_1$ related to failure criterion, c and p related to hardening function and ${\psi}_2$ and ${\mu}$ related to plastic potential show in a positive linear relationship with the dry density. Since the soil parameters h and representing yield function do not change much to relative density and also are closely related to failure criterion, they can be replaced by failure criterion. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data.

  • The effects of a hard-biased Held on the magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of a crossed spin-valve head are investigated by computer simulation with particular emphasis on the asymmetry of the output signal. The spin-valve considered in this work is NiMn (25 nm)/NiFe (2.5 m)/Cu (3 nm)/NiFe (5.5 m), with a length of 1500 m and a width of 600 nm. A simple model is used where each magnetic layer consists of a single domain, and the magnetoresistance is a function of the angle between the magnetization directions of the two magnetic layers. The ideal crossed spin-valve structure is not realized with the present model and magnetic parameters, but the deviation from ideality is decreased by the hard-biased field. This results in the improvement of the linearity of the output signal with the use of the bias field. The magnetoresistance ratio and magnetoresistive sensitivity, however are reduced. The magnetic properties including the magnetoresistance are found to be strongly affected by magnetostatic interactions, particularly the inter-layer magnetostatic field.

  • Embryonic stem (ES) cells, derived from preimplantation embryos, are able to differentiate into various types of cells consisting the whole body, or pluripotency. In addition to the plasticity, ES cells are expected to be different from terminally differentiated cells in very many ways, such as patterns of gene expressions, ability and response of the cells in confronting environmental stimulations, metabolism, and growth rate. As a model system to differentiate these two types of cells, human ES (hES, MB03) cells and terminally differentiated cells (HeLa), we examined the ability of these two types of cells in confronting a severe oxidative insult, that is $H_2 O_2$. Ratio of dying cells as determined by the relative amount of dye neutral red entrapped within the cells after the exposures. Cell death rates were not significantly different when either MB03 or HeLa were exposed up to 0.4 mM $H_2 O_2$. However, relative amount of dye entrapped within the cells sharply decreased down to 0.12% in HeLa cells when the cells were exposed to 0.8 mM $H_2 O_2$, while it was approximately 54% in MB03. Pretreatment of cells with BSO (GSH chelator) and measurement of GSH content results suggest that cellular GSH is the major defensive mechanism of hES cells. Induction of apoptosis in hES cell was confirmed by DNA laddering, induction of Bax, and chromatin condensation. In summary, hES cells 1) are extremely resistant to oxidative stress, 2) utilize GSH as a major defensive mechanism. and 3) experience apoptosis upon exposure to oxidative stress.

  • New production (NP) values in well-mixed waters of the Yellow Sea were estimated using two different methods and were compared with each other; one is from the quantum yield model of nitrate uptake and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$-specific light absorption coefficient, and the other is from a traditional $^{15}N$-labelled stable isotope uptake technique. The quantum yields of nitrate uptake were highly variable, ranging from 0.0001 to 0.04 mol $NO_3Ein^{-1}$, and the small values in this study might have resulted from either the partitioning into nitrate uptake of little portions of light energy absorbed by phytoplankton or that phytoplankton may predominantly utilize other N sources (E. G. ammonium and/or urea) than nitrate. The estimates (0.54-8.47 nM $h^{-1}$) of NP from the quantum yield model correlated well ($r^2$=0.67, p<0.1) with those (0.01-4.93 nM $h^{-1}$) obtained using the $^{15}NO_3$ uptake technique. To improve the ability of estimating NP values using this model in the Yellow Sea, more data need to be accumulated in the future over a variety of time and space scales.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the growth of aerobic bacteria in fresh-cut salad during short-term temperature abuse ($4{\sim}30^{\circ}C$temperature for 1, 2, and 3 h) for 72 h and to develop predictive models for the growth of total viable cells (TVC) based on Predictive food microbiology (PFM). The tool that was used, Pathogen Modeling program (PMP 7.0), predicts the growth of Aeromonas hydrophila (broth Culture, aerobic) at pH 5.6, NaCl 2.5%, and sodium nitrite 150 ppm for 72 h. Linear models through linear regression analysis; DMFit program were created based on the results obtained at 5, 10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$ for 72 h ($r^2$ >0.9). Secondary models for the growth rate and lag time, as a function of storage temperature, were developed using the polynomial model. The initial contamination level of fresh-cut salad was 5.6 log CFU/mL of TVC during 72 h storage, and the growth rate of TVC was shown to be 0.020~1.083 CFU/mL/h ($r^2$ >0.9). Also, the growth tendency of TVC was similar to that of PMP (grow rate: 0.017~0.235 CFU/mL/h; $r^2=0.994{\sim}1.000$). The predicted shelf life with PMP was 24.1~626.5 h, and the estimated shelf life of the fresh-cut salads with short-term temperature abuse was 15.6~31.1 h. The predicted shelf life was more than two times the observed one. This result indicates a 'fail safe' model. It can be taken to a ludicrous extreme by adopting a model that always predicts that a pathogenic microorganism will grow even under conditions so strict as to be actually impossible.

  • The adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions to activated carbon fiber (ACF) was investigated using both batch and flow-through column experiments. The batch experiments (adsorbent dose, 10 g/L; initial Cr(VI) concentration, 5-500 mg/L) showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) to ACF was determined to 20.54 mg/g. The adsorption of Cr(VI) to ACF was sensitive to solution pH, decreasing from 9.09 to 0.66 mg/g with increasing pH from 2.6 to 9.9; the adsorption capacity was the highest at the highly acidic solution pHs. Kinetic model analysis showed that the Elovich model was the most suitable for describing the kinetic data among three (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich) models. From the nonlinear regression analysis, the Elovich model parameter values were determined to be ${\alpha}$ = 162.65 mg/g/h and ${\beta}$ = 2.10 g/mg. Equilibrium isotherm model analysis demonstrated that among three (Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson) models, both Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models were suitable for describing the equilibrium data. In the model analysis, the Redlich-Peterson model fit was superimposed on the Freundlich fit. The Freundlich model parameter values were determined to be $K_F$ = 0.52 L/g and 1/n = 0.56. The flow-through column experiments showed that the adsorption capacities of ACF in the given experimental conditions (column length, 10 cm; inner diameter, 1.5 cm; flow rate, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min; influent Cr(VI) concentration, 10 mg/L) were in the range of 2.35-4.20 mg/g. This study demonstrated that activated carbon fiber was effective for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

  • Bioactivity guided phytochemical study of the petroleum ether and butanol extracts of Clematis hirsuta resulted in the isolation of 12 compounds. Rat paw edema as a model of acute inflammation was used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts and the chromatographic fractions. Five known sterols and triterpenes namely: ${\beta}-amyrin$ (1), lupeol (2), ${\beta}-sitosterol$ (3), oleanolic acid (4) and stigmasterol glycoside (5) were isolated from the petroleum ether extract. The n-butanol extract afforded two compounds reported for the first time from natural source: (S)-(+)-dihydro-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2(3H)-furanone (7) and (s)-(-)-5-hydroxymethyl-2(5H)-furanone (8). In addition, anemonin (6), dihydro-4-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2(3H)-furanone (2-deoxy-D-ribono-1,4-lactone) (9), biophenol (cimidahurin) (10), glucose (11) and sucrose (12) were also identified. The structures were determined from spectroscopic data including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of a herbal formula, PerioH-035, containing Angelica sinensis, steamed Rehmannia glutinosa, Angelica dahurica, Cimicifuga heracleifolia, and Zanthoxylum piperitum on the periodontal breakdown in a well-established ligature-induced periodontitis model in rats. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: NL (non-ligatured), L (ligatured), P1 (ligatured and treated with 1 mg/mL PerioH-035), P100 (ligatured and treated with 100 mg/mL PerioH-035). Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature around the mandibular first molars. PerioH-035 was topically applied to both sides of the first molar for 2 weeks. The right side of the mandibles was retrieved for micro-computed tomography (CT) and methylene blue staining to analyze alveolar bone loss. The left side of the mandibles was histologically analyzed by TRAP and H&E staining. The MMP-9 mRNA level in gingival tissue was investigated by RT-PCR. Results: Alveolar bone resorption was significantly reduced in the PerioH-035-treated groups. The number of dense multi-nucleated cells found to be TRAP-positive by staining in the ligatured rats was markedly decreased by PerioH-035 application. In addition, periodontal tissue destruction, especially cementum demineralization, was ameliorated in the P1 and P100 groups. Moreover, gingival tissue from the PerioH-035-treated group showed a decrease in the MMP-9 mRNA level, resulting in recovery of collagen degradation. Conclusions: These results suggest that PerioH-035 has therapeutic effects on periodontitis, and thus, PerioH-035 shows promise as a treatment for periodontitis.
