  • In this study, $CeO_2/TiO_2$ nanoparticle with structure of core and shell was synthesized by growing $TiO_2$ onto the surface of $CeO_2$ according to hydrolysis of $Ti(SO_4)_2$. Reaction time, temperature, concentration of $CeO_2$ slurry, pH control of $Ti(SO_4)_2$ were optimized about synthesis of $CeO_2/TiO_2$ core-shell nanoparticle. It was found that optimal mole ratio range of $CeO_2:TiO_2$ was 1:0.2~1.1, the optimal concentration of $CeO_2$ slurry was 1 %, and the optimal reaction temperature was $50^{\circ}C$. The optimal concentration of $CeO_2$ slurry could be increased up to 10 % by adjusting the pH of $Ti(SO_4)_2$ to 1 using $NH_4OH$ and adding to $CeO_2$ slurry. If reaction was carried at $80^{\circ}C$ or higher, the separated $TiO_2$ particles were obtained instead of $CeO_2/TiO_2$ core-shell nanoparticles. The optimal reaction temperature was $50^{\circ}C$ at which good shaped core-shell structure of $CeO_2/TiO_2$ was obtained.

  • H1N2 influenza viruses are circulating in pigs worldwide and cause considerable economic losses to the pig industry. We genetically analyzed the genes of our isolates from Korean pigs, and compared the antigenicity of our isolates with swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. In addition, we serologically surveyed the infection rate of swine H1N2 viruses in pigs. We found that H1N2 isolates from Korean pigs are genetically more related to swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. than those in European countries. When antigenicity was compared, our isolates were weakly reacted to antibodies against swine H1N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the U.S.A. The serological surveillance using sera from pigs in Korea showed that about 46% was positive for H1N2 viruses. Our results suggest that swine H1N2 viruses are widespread in Korean pigs, and the development of a vaccine against H1N2 viruses may help to control their infection in pigs.

  • Hydrothermal synthesis was conducted with starting material as Barium hydroxide and hydrous titania ($TiO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$) to obtain barium titanate fine Powder. The conversion, crystal structure and properties of as-prepared powder were investigated according to reaction temperature, time and concentration. The effect of variables on conversion was in order of time < temperature < concentration and the maximum conversion reached to 99.5% in the case of hydrothermal synthesis at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with 2.0 M reactant concentration. At low concentration such as 0.25 M, formation of unreacted $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ was not inevitable at even high reaction temperature and these components converted into $BaTi_2O_5$ at high temperature and remained as impurity. As concentration of reactant increased, the size of as-synthesized $BaTiO_3$ powder deceased and Ba/Ti molar ratio approached into 1, showing Ba/Ti ratio of $1{\pm}0.005$ for reaction at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with 2.0 M concentration.

  • Tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II)(3MeOSED)$(H_2O)_2$ complexe was synthesized and allowed to react with dry oxygen to form oxygen adducts of Cobalt(III) complexes such as ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMF)]$_2O_2$ and [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMSO)]$_2O_2$in DMF and DMSO or superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(Py)]$O_2$ in pyridine. The oxygen adducted complex was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and DPP method with glassy carbon electrode in 0.1M TEAP-DMF (-DMSO,-Py) as supporting electrolyte solution. As a result the reduction reaction process occurred to four steps including prewave Of $O_2^-$in 1 : 1 oxygen adducted superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(Py)]$O_2$complex and three steps not including prewave of $O_2^-$ in 1 : 2 oxygen adducted ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)-(3MeOSED)(DMF)]$_2O_2$ and [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(DMSO)]$_2O_2$. A superoxo type [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(L)]$O_2\;(L: CH_3OH)$ was generated with oxygen in methanol. Selectively oxidized hydrazobenzene $(H_2AB)$ to trans-azobenzene(t-AB) and the rate constant k for oxidation reaction of the following equation is $(2.96 {\pm} 0.2)$${\times}$ $10^{-1}$M/sec. $H_2AB$ + Co (II)(3MeOSED)$(L_2)+O_2\;{\rightleftarrow^K}$ [Co(III)(3MeOSED)(L)]$O_2{\cdot}H_2AB{\longrightarrow^K}$ Co(II(3MeOSED)$(L)_2$+t-AB+$H_2O_2 $.

  • The partial oxidation reaction of methane was investigated to produce syngas with $Ni/CeO_2-ZrO_2$, $Ni-Ru/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ and $Ni-Pd/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ catalysts. Honeycomb metallic monolith was applied in order to obtain high catalytic activity and stability in partial oxidation reforming. The catalysts were characterized by XRD and FE-SEM. The influence of various catalysts on syngas production was studied for the feed ratio (O/C), GHSV and temperature. Among the catalysts used in the experiment, the $Ni-Pd/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ catalyst showed the highest activity. The 99% of $CH_4$ conversion was obtained at the condition of T=$900^{\circ}C$, GHSV=10,000 $h^{-1}$ and feed ratio O/C=0.55. It was confirmed that $H_2$ yield increased slightly as O/C ratio increased, while CO yield remained almost constant. Also, $CH_4$ conversion decreased as GHSV increased. It was found that the safe range of GHSV for high $CH_4$ conversion was estimated to be less than 10,000 $h^{-1}$.

  • A PMN-PT-BT/Ag composite was prepared by surface modification with MgO sol with hoping to suppress silver's migration during sintering. The mixture of PbO, $N_2O_5,\;TiO_2\;with\;Mg(NO_3)_2$ instead of MgO was ball milled, the solvent was removed and then the dried powders were calcined at 950$^{\circ}C$/1h. The calcined powder were treated with 3.0 mol% $Ag_2O$ and 1.0 wt% MgO sol and calcined at 550$^{\circ}C$/1h. The dielectrics sintered at 1000$^{\circ}C$/4h under a flowing oxygen showed the density of 7.84g/$cm^3$, the room temperature dielectric constant of 18400, the dielectric loss of 2.4%, the specific resistivity of $0.24{\times}10^{12}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. It also showed the bending strength of $120.7{\pm}11.26$ MPa and the fracture toughness of $0.87{\pm}0.002\;MPam^{1/2}$ which were comparable to commercial PZT. The microstructure sonsisted of grains of ∼4${\mu}m$. SEM and SIMS analysis showed that Ag grew as ∼1${\mu}m$ and excess MgO as ∼0.5${\mu}m$.

  • Nanoporous TiO2 and ZrO2 thin films were spin-coated using a surfactant-templated approach from Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) as the templating agent, titanium alkoxide (Ti(OC4H9)4) as the inorganic precursor, and butanol as a the solvent. The control of the electronic structure of TiO2 is crucial for its various applications. We found that the band gap of the hybrid nanoporous thin films can be easily tuned by adding an acetylacetonestabilized Zr(OC4H9)4 precursor to the precursor solution of Ti(OC4H9)4. Pores with a diameter of 5 nm-10 nm were randomly dispersed and partially connected to each other inside the films. TiO2 and ZrO2 thin films have an anatase structure and tetragonal structure, respectively, while the TiO2-ZrO2 hybrid film exhibited no crystallinity. The refractive index was significantly changed by varying the atomic ratio of titanium to zirconium. The band gap for the nanoporous TiO2 was estimated to 3.43 eV and that for the TiO2-ZrO2 hybrid film was 3.61 eV.

  • SnO2-TiO2(Pt or Pd), as raw material for hydrocarbon gas sensors, was prepared by a coprecipitation method. The SnO2-TiO2-based thick film gas sensors were made by screen printing technique. The titanium dioxide synthesized was shown to be anatase structure from XRD peaks and was transformed to rutile structure between 700$^{\circ}C$ and 1000$^{\circ}C$. Titanium dioxide in SnO2-TiO2 thick films devices plays a very important role in the enhancement of the sensitivity to CH4 and C4H10. In the case of SnO2-TiO2(Pt) sensors, titanium dioxide that was rutile structure enhanced the sensitivity of the thick film to CH4. Platinum added to the raw powder at coprecipitation (as chloroplatinic acid VI hydrate) improved the gas sensitivity to hydrocarbon gases. Therefore, it is expected that the SnO2-TiO2(Pt) thick film sensors fabricated in this experiment could be put into practical use as LPG (primary component : C4H10 and C3H8) and LNG (primary component : CH4) sensors.

  • In this research, the photocatalytic degradation of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in $TiO_2$ aqueous suspension has been studied. $TiO_2$ photocatalysts are prepared by a sol-gel method. The dominant anatase-structure on $TiO_2$ particles is observed after calcining the $TiO_2$ gel at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. Photocatalysts with various transition metals (Nd, Pd and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effect of transition metal impurities on photodegradation. The photodegradation efficiencies with $TiO_2$ including Pt and Pd are higher than pure $TiO_2$ powder. Also we investigated the applicability of $H_2O_2$ to increase the efficiency of the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic degradation of dibenzothiophene. The degradation efficiency increases with increasing dosage of $H_2O_2$ in the range of 0.01M to 0.1M . The effect of pH is investigated; we obtained the maximum photodegradation efficiency at pH 5. In addition, the intermediate analysis found dihydroxyl -dibenzothiophene as a reaction intermediate of dibenzothiophene during the photodegradation.
