  • The synthesis of aluminum oxalate, one of the aluminum organic compounds, has been performed using aluminum hydroxide as a raw material. For this aim, domestic aluminum hydroxide of 99.7% purity was dissolved by oxalic acid to produce an aqueous aluminum solution. As a result, it was found that aluminum hydroxide could be dissolved almost completely by the reaction with 1.0 mole/l oxalic acid solution at $90^{\circ}C$ for 16 hr. It was strongly required to keep the ratio of ethanol/Al solution more than 2.0 for the synthesis of aluminum oxalate from the aluminum solution. Furthermore, the pH should be controlled to be more than 8.2 in order to obtain the recovery of aluminum oxalate higher than 90%. From the chemical analysis of aluminum oxalate prepared in this work, the content of $NH_4$, Al and C was found to be 14.5, 7.18 and 17.4%, respectively. Accordingly, the aluminum oxalate synthesized from the aluminum solution was confirmed to be $(NH_4)_3Al(C_2O_4)_3$ $3H_2O$.

  • In this study, the treatment of $H_2O_2$, papain and acylation on the protein isolate obtained from defatted sesame oil cake for the changes in amino acids composition, color, digestibility and some functional characteristics of this protein were investigated. The results showed that $H_2O_2$, papain and papain $H_2O_2$ treatment increased the rates of the protein extraction and content of protein in protein isolates when those values were compared to the alkali treatment. Also amino acid composition of the protein isolates were comparatively good, and color, and functional properties and pepsin digestibility were markedly improved. The amount of lysine, the first limiting amino acid of this protein was increased. The solubility, bulk density, water absorption, fat absorption and emulsifying properties were remarkably improved while foaming properties and digestibility was slighly decreased.

  • Herein, we selectively recovered Zn and produced ZnSO4 from electric arc furnace dust using a hydrometallurgical process. The analysis of the properties of the electric arc furnace dust revealed that the Fe content (9.9%) was relatively low while the Mn content (19%) was high as compared to the composition of general dust. Therefore, an appropriate hydrometallurgical process was designed based on the properties of the raw materials. In the leaching process involving the use of 1.6 M sulfuric acid and 20% solid-liquid ratio at 60℃ for 1 h, 85% of the Zn and Mn got dissolved while the Fe was not leached. To selectively recover Zn, a solvent extraction process using D2EHPA as the extractant was chosen, and 99% of the Zn was extracted using 0.8 M D2EHPA with 32% saponification and an O/A ratio of 2 using counter-current 3-stage extraction. Mn was entirely scrubbed with an aqueous sulfuric acid solution of pH 1.5. Finally, Zn was concentrated and stripped using 1.5 M sulfuric acid at an O/A ratio of 4 using counter-current 4-stage stripping. The stripping solution contained 40 g/L of Zn, and 99.9% of ZnSO4∙H2O was obtained by vacuum distillation.

  • When we prepared the cooked namul, bugak and kimchi by the leaves of Cedrela sinensis, the changes of quercitrin which was isolated from the leaves of this plant in each preparations were analysed by HPLC. Separation by reversed phase chromatography on u-Bondapak C/Sub 18/ column was achieved by isocratic elution with THF-dioxane-MeOH-HOAc-5% H/Sub 3/PO/Sub 4/-H/Sub 2/O (145: 125:50:20:2:658). When Kimchi was stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 20 days, the content of quercitrin in the methanol extract of Kimchi was 7.21% and Kimchi at 20$^{\circ}C$ was reduced by 5.78% (w/w). Contents of quercitrin in the leaves of Cedrela sinensis kimchi obsered to be gradually decreased during storage at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 20$^{\circ}C$. Contents of quercitrin of stored kimchi at 5$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that stored at 20$^{\circ}C$. The contents of quercitrin in Namul and Bugak were 13.06 and 5.03% (w/w), respectively, which were lower than control.

  • Sodium borate silicate glass of composition $10Na_2O-39B_2O_3-50SiO_2-CoO$ and $20Na_2O-14B_2O_3-65SiO_2-CoO$ were prepared by melting oxide mixtures in alumina crucible at $1210^{\circ}C$ in an electric furance in air for 2h, and then quenching in air. The dielectric behavior of the quenched glasses are the subject of the present work. Properties such as dielectric constant and resistivity as a function frequency and temperature are reported. From the dielectric spectra, the glass phase transition temperature has been found to decrease at a rate $Na_2O$ 20 mol% and the dielectric constants increase with increasing $Na_2O$ content. The frequency dependent resistivity response of glass exhibits a non-Debye type relaxation.

  • Fine mullite precursor was prepared by colloidal sol-gel processes. Aluminum isopropoxide $[Al(i-OC_3H_7)_3]$ as a starting material of $Al_2O_3$ and silicic acid extracted by THF from sodium silicate as a starting material of $SiO_2$ were used. Sodium silicate was first acidified by dilute sulfuric acid to form silicic acid. ; followed by extraction using THF, Mullite precursor was synthesized by sol-gel processes from aluminum isopropoxide and sillicic acid considering the degree of extraction of Si and the removal efficiency of Na. The impurity content of silicic acid extracted by THF was below 0.04% Synthetic mullite precursor consisted of $3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2SiO_2$ and showd spherical particles of $0.05{\mu}m$ diameter and below 0.462% of impurites. The mullite precursor was characterized by EDS, XRD, TG/DSC SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy ICP and TEM.

  • The behavior of sand and mold at high temperatures was generally agreed to importantly affect the quality of castings made. By changing water content through 2,4,6 and 8%, and bentonite content through 5,7,9 and 11%, specimens have been made according to the respective composition. Specimens have been subjected to hot compressive strength and thermal expansion at 400, 600, 800 and $1000^{\circ}C$ respectively. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. At each temperature, thermal expansion decreased and hot compressive strength increased with the increase in water content. 2. After thermal expansion was peaked at approximately $1000^{\circ}C$ the contraction and maximum hot compressive strength appeared. 3. At each temperature, maximum hot compressive strength appeared 2%, 4,6% and 8% water content for 7%, 9% and 11% bentonite content respectively. 4. When 2% $H_2O$ was added, though bentonite content was increased, hot compressive strength did not rarely change. 5. Until the thermal expansion was completed the required time was 15-18 minutes at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, and 10-13 minutes at $800^{\circ}C$. At $1000^{\circ}C$, the required time was 7-9 minutes in order to gain the maximum expansion, after that, contraction proceeded during 3-4 minutes before expansion was completed.

  • Experimental verification of boron species in fuel CRUD (Chalk River Unidentified Deposit) would provide essential and important information about the root cause of CRUD-induced power shifts (CIPS). To date, only bonaccordite and elemental boron were reported to exist in fuel CRUD in CIPS-troubled pressurized water reactor (PWR) cores and lithium tetraborate to exist in simulated PWR fuel CRUD from some autoclave tests. We have reevaluated previous analysis of similar threadlike crystals along with examining some similar threadlike crystals from CRUD samples collected from a PWR cycle that had no indications of CIPS. These threadlike crystals have a typical [Ni]/[Fe] atomic ratio of ~2 and similar crystal morphology as the one (bonaccordite) reported previously. In addition to electron diffraction study, we have applied electron energy loss spectroscopy to determine boron content in such a crystal and found a good agreement with that of bonaccordite. Surprisingly, such crystals seem to appear also on corroded surfaces of Alloy 600 that was exposed to simulated PWR primary water with a dissolved hydrogen level of $5mL\;H_2/kg\;H_2O$, but absent when exposed under $75mL\;H_2/kg\;H_2O$ condition. It remains to be verified as to what extent and in which chemical environment this phase would be formed in PWR primary systems.

  • This study was carried out in order to utilize ginseng marc (GM), a byproduct produced during the preparation of ginseng extract. For the utilization of GM as coffee-replacing beverage, GM was roasted at 140-23$0^{\circ}C$, for 10-30 min to generate coffee-like flavor and taste. The physicochemical changes in GM induced by roasting process was measured. Weight and moisture contents of GM abruptly decreased while roasting at various temperature and period of time, and the amount of water-extracted solid substances decorated beyond 23$0^{\circ}C$. Among the proximate components, total and free sugar decreased remarkably, while crude fat content increased. Crude protein content did not change by the roasting process. pH derides to pH 4.9 after 30 min at 20$0^{\circ}C$, but increased at higher temperatures. Hunter color L value of the GM powder decreased, whereas a and b values, increased up to 10 times as compared to that of the control. The brown color(O, D 490 nm) in 50% ethanol extract of the roasted GM was 46 times higher than that of the control.
