  • This paper presents a vibration-rejection control design for a magnetic suspension system which has strong non-linearity, open-loop unstable characteristics, high-order flexible modes, and parameter variations. The target plant to be controlled consists of a U-core electromagnet and a flexible rail. We describe the test rig and formulate the mathematical model and then we set up a control problem as the mixed sensitivity problem where the augmented plant is constructed with frequency weighting functions and the feedback controller is designed by using the H$\infty$ controller. The effectiveness of the designed controller for the magnetic suspension system with high-order flexible modes is validated and justified using several simulations. These results show that the magnetic suspension system is robustly stable against disturbance and gives the well-damped tracking performance ...

  • Recent trend of increasing automated factories needs supply of high quality power from the utilities. Among the items of the power quality, voltage sag can be compensated by Dynamic Voltage Restorer(DVR). The key feature of the DVR is high response with less transient period to recover from the voltage sag due to the lightning or line-to-ground faults. In this paper we report that H controller is very premising for the practical application to the controller of DVR. Experiment al results shown in this paper was obtained by applying the control algorithm to 20 kVA DVR system. The experimental set consist s of IGBT - based three phase inverter and the TMS320C32- 60 DSP used for main processor of the control board. T$\infty$ simulate the 50% voltage ...

  • In this paper, robust two-degree-of-freedom controller for satellite antenna system which tracks reference signal is designed. Two-degree-of-freedom controller consists of a prefilter and a feedback controller to solve trade-off between robust stability and command response. The feedback controller is designed from specifications like stability, disturbance rejection and robustness via H$_{\infty}$ design technique. In the sequel, H$_2$ optimal prefilter is introduced to improve the command response. This suggests a two-step design, with different types of performance specifications at each stage. In practical problems, this may easily lead to a prefilter of unacceptably high order. In order to avoid high order prefilter we use a particular structure in which both the prefilter and the feedback controller share the same dynamics. H$_2$-prefilter technique proposed in this paper is verified by simulation.

  • A six DOF fine manipulator based on magnetic levitation is developed. Since most of magnetic levitation system are inherently unstable, a proposed magnetically levitated fine manipulator is implemented by use of an antagonistic structure to increase stability. From mathematical modeling and experiment, the equations of motion are derived. In addition, a six DOF sensing system is implemented by use of three 2-axis PSD sensors. A model reference-$H_{\infty}$ controller is applied to the system for the position control, In application of the fine manipulator, a wafer probing system is proposed to identify nonfunctional circuts. The probing system requires compliance to avoid destruction of DUT(device under test). A feedfor- ward-PD controllers are presented by the terms of the position accuracy, the settling time and the force accuracy.y.

  • The objective of this study is to design a robust power control system for a small pressurized water reactor (PWR) to achieve stable power operations under conditions of external disturbances and internal model uncertainties. For this purpose, the multiple-input multiple-output transfer function models of the reactor core at five power levels are derived from point reactor kinetics equations and the Mann's thermodynamic model. Using the transfer function models, five local reactor power controllers are designed using an H infinity (H) mixed sensitivity method to minimize the core power disturbance under various uncertainties at the five power levels, respectively. Then a multimodel approach with triangular membership functions is employed to integrate the five local controllers into a multimodel robust control system that is applicable for the entire power range. The performance of the robust power system is assessed against 10% of full power (FP) step load increase transients with coolant inlet temperature disturbances at different power levels and large-scope, rapid ramp load change transient. The simulation results show that the robust control system could maintain satisfactory control performance and good robustness of the reactor under external disturbances and internal model uncertainties, demonstrating the effective of the robust power control design.

  • A new approach is presented to design a robust sampled-data controller for an experimental flexible beam carrying an unknown payload at its free end. The purpose of this paper is to move the free end of the beam to a desired position in the specified time under vibration suppression. We derive a transfer function nominal model for the beam and quantitative description of model uncertainties based on experimentally obtained frequency response data. Robust controllers are designed by applying the sampled-data $H_{\infty}$ control and ${\mu}m-theory$, in which two types of uncertainties, structured and unstructured uncertainties, are adopted for satisfactory performance in terms of hinge position regulation and vibration damping, besides obviously asymptotic stability. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through simulation and experimentation.

  • In this paper, we study on the identification of discrete-time state-space model for robust control of tandem cold mill, using a MOESP(MIMO output-error state-space model identification) algorithm based on subspace method. It is shown that the identified model is well adapted to input-output data sets, which are obtained from nonlinear mathematical equations of tandem cold mill. Furthermore, deterministic H$\infty$ norm bounds on uncertainties including modeling errors and disturbances are quantitatively identified in the frequency domain. Finally, the results give a basic idea to determine weighting functions included in formulating some robust control problems of tandem cold mill.

  • In this paper, we propose a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy-model-based design for the tracking control of a class of nonlinear underwater glider. By using the partial linearization and the sector nonlinearity, the underwater glider with six degrees of freedom (6 DOF) is modelled by the T-S fuzzy model. The concerned tracking control problem with $H_{\infty}$ performance is converted into the stabilization one for the error dynamics between the given nonlinear underwater glider and the reference time-varying input. Sufficient conditions are derived for the asymptotic stabilizability of the error dynamics in the format of matrix inequality. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology.

  • This paper addresses the robust fault tolerant controller design problems of static output systems with disturbance. The fault is expressed by the abrupt chattering of system parameters. The design conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities and linear matrix equalities. An illustrative example is provided to verify performances of the proposed controller.

  • In this paper, a robust controller of state delayed systems is presented. The suggested controller stabilizes the closed loop system independently of the delay time. It is shown that the controller reduces the effect of disturbances on the output of the given system to a pre-specified level. The proposed controller will stabilize the closed loop system in the presence of plant perturbations whose size are less than a pre-specified value.
