Grain size and shape are the two important components contributing to rice yield and quality. To analyze traits related to grain-shape, a total of 272 varieties derived from japonica, japonica black and Tongil-type rice accession in Korea were evaluated in this study. The traits, grain length (GL), grain width (GW), grain thickness (GT), length to width ratio (RLW), and 1000-grain weight (TGW) were measured and replicated 10 times. Genes (GW2, GS3, qGL3, qSW5, GS5, TGW6, GW7, and GW8) related to grain-shape were validated in the accessions using specific DNA marker sets. K-mean clustering of the accession based on phenotypic data revealed three groups: group 1 was classified by GW and GT and included most of japonica type, group 2 was classified by RLW and GL reached a medium size and possessed a half spindle-shaped type, and group 3 was classified by TGW, reached a long size and possessed a semi-round shape. In validation tests using the marker sets, both gw2 and tgw6 were validated in less than 1% of the tested accessions and two allelic types, qgl3 and gw8, were only verified in Tongil-type accessions. For GW8 and GW2, any different amplicons were not amplified in any japonica or Tongil-type accessions, respectively. In order to suggest the representative grain-shape gene combinations for each ecotype, the allelic combinations were evaluated by PCR analysis. Cj1 and 2 in japonica (Cj1-7), Cj_b1 and 2 in japonica-black (Cj_b1-3), and CT3 in Tongil-type (CT1-13) turned out to be the dominant combination in each ecotype, respectively. In addition, the results revealed that introgression of four genes (gw2, gs3, qSW5, and GS5) would expand the diversity of grain shape in Korean japonica varieties. The gene combinations information could be utilized practically to understand or enhance grain shape in japonica rice breeding program.
Purpose : The most important management of congenital hydronephrosis consists of the early diagnosis and evaluation of the pathologic abnormalities of congenital hydronephrosis. This study was conducted to investigate the different causes of hydronephrosis and its clinical outcome. Methods : 54 live neonates who were hospitalized and diagnosed with congenital hydronephrosis at Chungnam National University Hospital from Aug. 1998 to Aug. 2003 were retrospectively analyzed. Results : Hydronephrosis(renal pelvic AP diameter $gt;5 mm) was postnatally detected in 54 cases(2.1%) among 2,539 neonates who were hospitalized from Aug. 1998 to Aug. 2003. There were three times more males than females. Additional imaging studies revealed that ureteropelvic junction obstruction was the most common postnatal diagnosis(48.7%), followed by multicystic dysplastic kidney, vesicoureteral reflux and duplication kidney with ureterocele. Spontaneous regression of hydronephrosis was revealed in 25 renal units(75.8% ) of mild hydronephrosis, 14 renal units of moderate hydronephrosis and 1 renal unit of severe hydronephrosis. Operative correction were carried out in 14 renal units(70%) of severe hydronephrosls. Conclusion : The most common established cause of congenital hydronephrosis in this study was ureteropelvic junction obstruction. There are many cases of spontaneous regression in mild to moderate congenital hydronephrosis. Urinary tract infections occur in many neonates with hydronephrosis. Therefore, early detection and evaluation of congenital hydronephrosis and continuous follow-up at regular intervals are necessary for conservation of renal function. The rule 15, 16 and 17 of International Regulations for Preventing collisions at Sea direct actions to avoid collision when two power-driven vessels are crossing. But these rules do not present the safety minimum approaching distances outside which a give- way vessel deeps out of the way of a stand-on vessel. In this paper, the author analyzed the ship's collision avoiding actions from a viewpoint of ship kinematics as the method to calculate this distance. The author worked out mathematic formulas for calculating the safety minimum approaching distances outside which the give-way vessel takes the actions to avoid collisions in accordance with the cross angles of the crossing vessels' courses. Figuring out actually the values of maneuvering indices of the M. S. Koan Ack San (GT: 224tons), the training ship of the National Fisheries University of Busan and the M. S. Golden Clover (GT: 101, 235tons) of the Eastern Shipping Co., Ltd. through their Z test, the author applied these values to the calculating formulas and calculated the safety minimum approaching distances. The results of calculations are as follows; 1. The greatest distance is to be kept by the give-way vessel to avoid collision when the cross angle of courses is 90$^{\circ}$ or near it. In such case the safety minimum approaching distance of a small vessel must be more than 5 times of her own length and that of a large vessel more than 11 times of her own length. 2. Collision danger is greater when crossing angle is obtuse than in an acute angle, therefore greater distance is to be kept by the give-way vessel to avoid collision in the case of the obtuse angle. 3. The actions to be taken to avoid collisions by the give-way vessel in Rule 16 and by the stand-on vessel in Rule 17(a)(ii) of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, must be done outside the above safety minimum approaching distance. When inevitably such actions are to be taken within the safety minimum approaching distance, they should be accompanied with engine motions.

In order to design and develop a product that can treat the fatty liver, natural complex food with all natural ingredients was developed and supplemented to rats with high fat diet to induce fatty liver. As a result, when the amount of natural complex food was increased in diet of subjects, the activities of the blood serum AST, ALT, ALP, 3-GT and LDH were decreased. The total protein concentration levels of the 30% and the 50% natural complex food groups did not show changes in respect to the control group, but the 100% natural complex food groups showed significant decrease (p<0.05). Likewise, the amount of blood serum albumin in the 30% and the 50% natural complex food groups did not show improvement, but the 100% natural complex food did showed significant changes (p<0.05). The amount of blood serum triglyceride decreased as the amount of natural complex food was increased. In order to investigate the appearances of the accumulated fat in the liver, the animals were dissected. Livers of the control group (no natural complex food) were appeared as a white color, which means serious fat accumulation. However, all the natural complex food groups (30,50 and 100% natural complex food) showed noticeable decrease of fat content. Even the histology showed that livers of the control group had expansion of the fat, but a11 the natural complex food groups had e decreased as the contents and continued to show destroyed fatty cells. By observing the biological numeric data, the physical appearance and the history of the fatty liver, it is highly expected that natural complex food is very effective in treating the liver damaged -by the to fat and the cholesterol.
[ $LiNi_{1-x}Co_xO_2\;(x=0.0\~1.0)$ ] powders were synthesized by citrate method, and their crystal structures and electrochemical performance as the cathode material in Li secondary batteries were analyzed. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the samples carry a single phase regardless of the Co substitution. The results of Rietveld refinement suggested that the crystal structure of solid solutions varies according to the Co substitution. When the Co substitution is low $(x=0.3\~0.5)$, the solid solutions carry a cubic-like structure with a relatively small value in the ratio of lattice parameters (c/a). The solid solutions made with a higher Co substitution (x=0.7), however, exhibit a layered structure with a higher c/a ratio. This difference was also observed in the electrochemical voltage spectroscopy (EVS) profiles, whereby the Co component in scarcely substituted materials shows a charging reaction at $3.7V\;(vs.\;Li/Li^+)$, but in the heavily substituted ones at 3.92V.

Total tocopherol and phenol contents were determined for virgin and pure oilve oil, and their autoxidation and thermal oxidation were compared with those of commercial soybean oil, in the presence or absence of fluorescent light. The total tocopherol contents of virgin, pure olive oil, and soybean oil were 15.7, 11.2, and 80.7 mg/100 g, respectively. Their total phenol contents were 10.4, 1.6 and 0.5 mg/l00 g, respectively. In autoxidation under dark place at 45$^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of the substrate oils decreased in order of virgin oilve oil, pure olive oil, and soybean oil. The average temperature coefficients of the virgin, pure olive oil and soybean oil in the range of 45∼$65^{\circ}C$ were 1.73, 1.83 and 1.64, and the activation energies were 26.86, 29.49, and 24.07 KJ/mol, respectively. In temperature range of 45∼$65^{\circ}C$, pure olive oil was the most susceptible to temperature change, whereas soybean oil the least. In autoxidation under fluorescent light at 45$^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of substrate oils decreased in the order of soybean oil, pure olive oil, and virgin olive oil. In thermal oxidation at 18$0^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of substrate oils decreased in order of pure olive oil, virgin olive oil, and soybean oil.
Objective: Excision repair cross-complementing group 6 (ERCC6) is a major component of the nucleotide excision repair pathway that plays an important role in maintaining genomic stability and integrity. Several recent studies suggested a link of ERCC6 polymorphisms with susceptibility to various cancers. However, the relation of ERCC6 polymorphism with gastric cancer (GC) risk remains elusive. In this sex- and age-matched case-control study including 402 GC cases and 804 cancer-free controls, we aimed to investigate the association between a potentially functional polymorphism (rs1917799 T>G) in the ERCC6 regulatory region and GC risk. Methods: The genotypes of rs1917799 were determined by Sequenom MassARRAY platform and the status of Helicobacter pylori infection was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidential interval (CI) were calculated by logistic regression analysis. Results: Compared with the common TT genotype, the ERCC6 rs1917799 GG genotype was associated with increased GC risk (adjusted OR=1.46, 95%CI: 1.03-2.08, P=0.035). When compared with (GT+TT) genotypes, the GG genotype also demonstrated a statistical association with increased GC risk (adjusted OR=1.38, 95%CI: 1.01-1.89, P=0.044). This was also observed for the male subpopulation (GG vs. TT: adjusted OR=1.71, 95%CI: 1.12-2.62, P=0.013; G allele vs. T allele: adjusted OR=1.32, 95%CI: 1.07-1.62, P=0.009). Genetic effects on increased GC risk tended to be enhanced by H. pylori infection, smoking and drinking, but their interaction effects on GC risk did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: ERCC6 rs1917799 GG genotype might be associated with increased GC risk in Chinese, especially in males.

A model experiment on a midwater rope trawl net which is used in the North Pacific to catch alaska pollack is carried out in the circulating tank to examine the basic efficiency of the net. The prototype is the net used by M/S Hanil(1, 179GT, 2, 700PS), a Korean trawler. The model net was made according to the Tauti's Similarity Law of Fishing Gear in 1/100 scale by considering the condition of the tank. To measure the basic efficiency of the standard model net, the vertical opening and width between some points marked on the net were measured, and the hydrodynamic resistance were determined. Then the constructive conditions of the net were varied as follows and the factors were measured again to compare the efficiency of those nets with that of the standard net(A-1 type) front weight multiplied 1.5 times: A-2 type. buoyancy and depressing force multiplied 1.7 times: A-3 type. front weight multiplied 1.5 times on A-3 type: A-4 type. depressors rigged at ground rope: B type. cod-end stuffed with cashmylon wad: C type. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The vertical opening at the center of head rope was steeply decreased with the flow velocity increasing and the vertical opening H(m) can be expressed in H=1.2v super(-1.2)(v : flow velocity in m/sec). The width of the net varied a little when the flow velocity was over 0.4m/sec, and the width of net mouth showed about 37% of the distance between the fore tips of net pendant. The shape of net mouth was almost a circle at 0.2m/sec and then steeply flatted elliptically with the flow velocity increasing and the area of mouth S(m super(2)) can be expressed in S=(1.65-2.3v)$\times$10 super(-2). The hydrodynamic resistance of the net increased almost linearly with the flow velocity increasing and the resistance R(kg) can be expressed in R=3.2$\times$d/l$\times$abv. where d/l denotes the mean of d(diameter of netting twine) and l(length of a leg in a mesh) from wing tip to the end of bag-net except cod-end on the side pannel, and a denotes the strectched circumference of the net at the fore end of a meshed part and b the stretched length of the whole net from wing tip to the end of cod-end. 2. In the condition-varied nets, the vertical opening of head rope showed some increase in every type net except the C type, and the increase showed the greatest in the B type by 30~54%, whereas it showed decrease in the C type by 5~10%. Variation of the area of net mouth showed almost the same tendency as the vertical opening and the increase showed the greatest in the B type by 20%, whereas it showed decrease in the C type by 12%. Hydrodynamic resistance showed some increase in every type compared with the standard net, and the rate of increase indicated 5~10% in the A-2, A-3 and A-4 type, 22% in the B type and 3% in the C type.

We performed a molecular marker-based analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for traits that determine the quality of the appearance of grains, using 120 doubled-haploid (DH) lines developed by another culture from the F1 cross between ‘Cheongcheong’ (Oryza sativa L. ssp. Indica) and ‘Nagdong’ (Oryza sativa L. ssp. Japonica). The traits studied included length, width, and thickness of the grains, as well as length-to-width ratio and 1,000-grain weight. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic control of these traits in order to formulate a strategy for improving the appearance of this hybrid. Within the DH population, five traits exhibited wide variation, with mean values occurring within the range of the two parents. Three QTLs were identified for grain length on chromosomes 2, 5, and 7. Three QTLs were mapped for grain width on chromosome 2: qGW2-1, qGW2-2, and qGW2-3. Six chromosomes were identified for the grain length-to-width ratio; four of these were on chromosome 2, whereas the other two were on chromosomes 7 and 12. One QTL influencing 1,000-grain weight was identified and located on chromosome 8. The results presented in the present study should facilitate rice-breeding, especially for improved hybrid-rice quality.

Classical galactosemia (OMIM# 230400) is an autosomal recessive disorder of carbohydrate metabolism, due to a complete loss in galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT; E.C.2.7.7.12) enzyme activity. It caused by mutations in the GALT gene (OMIM$^*$ 606999) that is located at chromosome 9p13. The GALT enzyme deficiency results in a build-up of galactose and galactose-1-phosphate, causing life threatening complications such as feeding problems, failure to thrive, hepatocellular damage, bleeding and sepsis. However, Duarte galactosemia, a variant form of GALT deficiency, has residual GALT enzyme activities in erythrocytes and do not have manifest the symptoms of classical galactosemia. Since the advent of newborn screening (NBS) for galactosemia, we rarely encounter such overwhelmingly ill newborns. The positive NBS with no symptoms indicates the possibility of Duarte galactosemia besides a simple false positive and it has to be differentiated from classical galactosemia which is a medical emergency. In Korea, detection rate of Duarte galactosemia is very low and its genetic information is restrictive, too. We report a case of monozygotic twins with D/G galactosemia compound heterozygote in proven by the mutational analysis of GALT gene, which revealed N314D polymorphism and -119 to -116 delGTCA.
