Effect of Nitrate on Iron Reduction and Phosphorus Release in Flooded Paddy Soil (논토양에서 질산 이온이 철의 환원과 인의 용출에 미치는 영향)

  • The increase in P availability to rice under flooded soil conditions involves the reductive dissolution of iron phosphate and iron (hydr)oxide phosphate. However, since $NO_3^-$ is a more favourable electron acceptor in anaerobic soils than Fe, high$NO_3^-$ loads function as a redox buffer limiting the reduction of Fe. The effect of adding $NO_3^-$ on Fe reduction and P release in paddy soil was investigated. Pot experiment was conducted where $NO_3^-$ was added to flooded soil and changes of redox potential and $Fe_2^+$, $NO_3^-$ and $PO_4^{3-}$ concentrations in soil solution at 10 cm depth were monitored as a function of time. Redox potential decreased with time to -96 mV, but it was temporarily poised at about 330${\sim}$360 mV when $NO_3^-$ was present. Nitrate addition to soil led to reduced release of $Fe_2^+$ and prevented the solubilization of P. Phosphate in pore water began to rise soon after incubation and reached final concentrations about 0.82 mg P/L in the soil without $NO_3^-$ addition. But, in the soil with $NO_3^-$ addition, $PO_4^{3-}$ in pore water was maintained in the range of 0.2${\sim}$0.3 mg P/L. The duration of inhibition in $Fe_2^+$ release was closely related to the presence of $NO_3^-$, and the timing of $PO_4^{3-}$ release was inversely related to the $NO_3^-$ concentration in soil solution. The results suggest that preferential use of $NO_3^-$ as an electron acceptor in anaerobic soil condition can strongly limit Fe reduction and P solubilization.

A Study on Iron Compounds of Scoria in The Western Seaside Area of Jeju (제주 서부 해안지역 스코리아의 철 화합물에 관한 연구)

  • Fe compounds of scoria samples distributed in the western seaside area of Jeju island were investigated by means of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray diffractometry (XRF) and $^{57}Fe$ Mossbauer spectroscopy. The samples were prepared from five parasite volcanos. We found that the samples were a typical basalt from the contents ratio of $SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3$ and Fe, and that they were silicate minerals. Underwater volcanoes scoria samples are shown only doublets in Mossbauer spectra and others scoria samples are shown sextets due to hematite and magnetite. And the balence state of Fe in the underwater volcanoes scoria samples are chiefly 2+ charge state with a little of the 2+ charge state. But the balence state of Fe in the others scoria samples are chiefly 3+ charge state.

  • The electronic structure of ferrimagnetic spinel oxide of $FeV_2O_4$ has been investigated by employing soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Fe 2p and V 2p XAS spectra show that the valence states of Fe and V ions are ${\sim}Fe^{2.3+}$ mixed-valent states and ${\sim}V^{3+}$ states, respectively. In Fe 2p XMCD spectra, finite XMCD signals are observed for divalent $Fe^{2+}$ states only, but not for $Fe^{3+}$ states. This finding indicates that the magnetic moments of $Fe^{2+}$ ions are ordered ferromagnetically but that those of $Fe^{3+}$ ions are cancelled, implying that $Fe^{2+}$ ions play an important role in determining magnetic properties of $FeV_2O_4$.

Investigation of Electronic Structures of TCr2O4 (T = Fe, Co, Ni) Spinel Oxides by Employing Soft X ray Synchrotron Radiation Spectroscopy (연 X선 방사광 분광법을 이용한 TCr2O4(T = Fe, Co, Ni) 스피넬 산화물의 전자구조 연구)

  • The electronic structures of $TCr_2O_4$ (T = Fe, Co, Ni) spinel oxides have been investigated by employing synchrotron radiation-based soft X ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The measured 2p XAS spectra of transition-metal ions reveal that Cr ions are trivalent ($Cr^{3+}$), and all the T (T = Fe, Co, Ni) ions are divalent ($Fe^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$). It is also found that most of T (T = Fe, Co, Ni) ions occupy the A sites under the tetrahedral symmetry, while Cr ions occupy mainly the B sites under the octahedral symmetry. These findings show that the structures of $TCr_2O_4$ (T = Fe, Co, Ni) are very close to the normal spinel structures. Based on these findings, it is expected that Jahn-Teller (JT) effects are important in $FeCr_2O_4$ and $NiCr_2O_4$. In contrast, $CoCr_2O_4$ maintains the cubic structure without having the JT distortion since both $Cr^{3+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ ions are non-JT ions. This work suggests that the antiferromagnetic interaction between $Cr^{3+}$ and $T^{2+}$ ions plays an important role in determining the magnetic properties of $TCr_2O_4$ (T = Fe, Co, Ni).

Geochemical Characteristics of Groundwater for Dry and Rainy Seasons in Ddan-sum Island (갈수기와 홍수기의 김해 딴섬지역 지하수의 지구화학 특성)

  • Seasonal changes in groundwater geochemistry exist in Ddan-sum island. In the farming season of April, the spatial distribution of ions explains that $Fe^{2+}$, Fe(total), $Mn^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $SiO_2$, ${HCO_3}^-$, and ${NO_3}^-$ are high in the center of the island, but $Na^+$ and $K^+$ are relatively low and these high anions indicates the effect of fertilizer used for strawberry cultivation. Spatial variation of ion concentration is smaller in August than April because of low agricultural activity and heavy rainfall. Geochemical type of groundwater shows that the center of island has the characteristics of recharge zone but the rim area corresponds to a mixing zone between groundwater and stream water. According to the analysis of saturation index for Fe and Mn ions, hematite, goethite, and rhodochrosite under supersaturation have a possibility of additional mineral deposition, and siderite, $Fe(OH)_3$, manganite, pyrolusite, and pyrochroite under unsaturation may exist as a type of dissolved ion.

Crystallographic and Magnetic Properties of a Perovskite La1/3Sr2/3FeO2.96 (페롭스카이트 La1/3Sr2/3FeO2.96의 결정학적 및 자기적 성질에 관한 연구)

  • Detailed aspects of the charge disproportionation (CD) transition for a polycrystalline $La_{1/3}Sr_{2/3}FeO_{2.96}$ were studied with the X-ray diffraction, $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometer. The crystal structure was found to be rhombohedral with a space group R/3c. The lattice parameters were $a_R=5.4874\;\AA,\;and\;a_R=60.07^{\circ}$, respectively. $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra were taken within a wide range of temperature from 4.2 K up to room temperature. In the low temperature region, the spectra were comprised of two superimposed sextets which originated from $Fe^{3+}\;and\;Fe^{5+}$, respectively. This was the antiferromagnetic mixed valence state produced by the charges disproportionated into two different species. In the high temperature region, however, only a singlet from $Fe^{3.6+}$ was observed, indicating that it was a paramagnetic averaged valence state. The CD transition occurred in the temperature range from 175 K to 200 K, in which the two phases coexisted. The origin for the CD transition was explained by the thermally generated fast hopping of electrons. Hysteresis loop showed that there existed a strong antiferromagnetic interaction among magnetic ions. As the temperature increased thru the CD transition temperature, it was very likely that the interaction between $Fe^{3+}\;and\;Fe^{5+}$ was replaced by a more stronger one.

A study on the Mossbauer effect and optical properties of $^{57}Fe$-doped-GaAs ($^{57}Fe$ 도프된 GaAs의 Mossbauer 효과 및 광학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • We have investigated Mossbauer effect and emission properties of the Fe-doped GaAs grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). The powder type of isotope $^{57}Fe$ was used as a dopant source in LPE-GaAs. From the analysis of Mossbauer effect the value of isomer shift, 0.303$\pm$0.018 mm/sec, is calculated at low temperature. This means that charge state of Fe ion in GaAs is 3+. The results of double crystal x-ray rocking curve (DCRC) and low temperature photoluminescence (PL) show the crystal quality of the epitaxial layers are good. Unusual luminescence peaks from the Fe-GaAs epitaxial layers appeared at emission energy of 0.99 eV and 1.15 eV. We attribute these emissions to Fe-acceptor related two deep radiative centers.

  • Fe compounds of scoria samples distributed in Songdang-ri positioning north-eastern area of Jeju island were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and $^{57}Fe$ M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. The samples were prepared from six parasite. We found that the samples were composed of a typical olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, $SiO_2$, anorite and anorthoclase, M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectrum of the most scoria samples are shown doublets and sextets of olivine, doublets of pyroxene, ilmenite and silicate minerals. And the valence states of Fe ion of the scoria samples in this area are chiefly 3+ charge state and a little 2+ charge state.

  • It have been investigated the measured results of the XRF, the X-ray diffractometry and $^{57}Fe\;M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum for scoria samples which are distributed throughout different areas in Mid-mountain Area of Jeju island. We consider that the scoria samples are chiefly made of silicate minerals, like $SiO_2$, others silicate minerals and iron oxides minerals. We study that it's materiel is consisted of olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, hematite and magnetite. Iron compounds in that are $Fe^{2+}$ of olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite and $Fe^{3+}$ of hematite, magnetite et al. The major Fe fractions of the scoria samples are 51.77 wt%, so Fe fractions of the scoria samples are almost 3+ charge state with a little of the 2+ charge state.

A Study on Solidification and Wear Character of Multi-alloyed White Cast Iron

  • 응고 및 마모거동을 연구하기 위하여 Cr, V, Mo 및 W의 조성이 다른 3종류의 백주철을 주조하였다. 고주파유도용해로에서 장입시켜 1873K까지 승온시켜 장입원료들을 모두 용해시킨 후 1823K에서 Y블럭주형에 주입하였다. 얻어진 3종류의 백주철조성은 다음과 같다: Fe-3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(합금1), Fe-3%C-10%V-5%Mo-5%W(합금2) 및 Fe-3%C-17%Cr-3%V(합금 3)응고과정을 추적하기 위하여 각 시편으로부터 50g을 채취한 후 알루미나도가니에 넣고 실리콘카바이드로를 사용하여 1723K의 알콘분위기하에서 재용해를 시켰다. 용금을 10K/분의 속도로 냉각시키면서 열분석을 행하였으며 도중 몇 차례 소입 실험을 병행하였다.합금1의 경우 초정오스테나이트, (오스테나이트+$M_7C_3$)공정, (오스테나이트+$M_6C$)공정, 합금2의 경우 초정 MC, 초정오스테나이트, (오스테나이트+MC)공정 , (오스테나이트+$M_2C$)공정, 합금3의 경우 초정 $M7C_3$와 (오스테나이트+$M_7C_3$)공정으로 구성되어 있었다. 주방상태, 균질화열처러상태, 공냉상태, 템퍼링상태에서 내마모시험을 행하였다. 먼저 주방상태시 편을 진공분위기하에서 1223K에서 5시간동안 균질화열처리를 행한후 로냉을 시켰다. 다시 이 시편을 1323K에서 2시간 유지후 강제공냉을 시켰으며 강제공냉된 시편을 573K에서 3시간동안 템퍼링처리를 하였다. 내마모시험은 120 mesh마모지에 10N의 하중을 가하여 실시하였다. 각 사이클마다 무게감소를 측정하였으며 8번 반복실험을 하였다. 마모량은 균질화열처리시편, 주방상태시편, 템퍼링시편, 공냉시편의 순으로 감소하였다. 합금2가 마모량이 가장 적었으며 합금3이 가장 많았다. 합금2의 마모량이 가장 적은 이유는 조직이 초정 MC, 공정 MC 및 공정 M2C로 구성되어 있기 때문으로 사료된다.주방상태에서 기지조직은 퍼얼라이트이었으나 열처리를 통하여 마르텐사이트, 템퍼드마르텐사이트, 잔류오스테나이트로 변태하였다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 보면 MC가 내마모성에 가장 기여하는 조직으로 판단되어진다.
