Chloride-based fluxes such as NaCl-KCl are used in the refining of Al melt. The vapor pressure of the chloride is one of the fundamental pieces of information required for such processes, and is generally high at elevated temperatures. In order to measure the vapor pressure for chlorides, the apparatus for the transpiration method was assembled in the present study. The vapor pressure of $ZnCl_2$ and $FeCl_2$, which is related with the process of aluminum refining and the recovery of useful elements from iron and steel industry by-products, was also measured. In the measurement of vapor pressure by the transpiration method, the powder of $ZnCl_2$ or $FeCl_2$ in a alumina boat was loaded in the uniform zone of the furnace with a stream of Ar. The weight loss of $ZnCl_2$ and $FeCl_2$ after holding was measured by changing the flow rate of Ar gas (10 sccm -230 sccm), and the partial pressures of $ZnCl_2$ and $FeCl_2$ were calculated. The partial pressures within a certain range were found to be independent of the flow rate of Ar at different temperatures. The vapor pressures were measured in the temperature range of 758-901K for $ZnCl_2$ and 963-983K for $FeCl_2$. The measured results agreed well with those in the literature.

The characteristics of inductively coupled Cl$_2$/BCl$_3$ plasmas during the GaN etching were studied using plasma mass spectrometry by measuring the relative amounts of reactive ions, neutrals, and etch products. GaN etch rates increased with the increase of pressure and showed a maximum near 25mTorr for the pure $Cl_2$ and near 30mTorr for $Cl_2$$BCl_3$. The addition of$ BCl_3$ to $Cl_2$ also was increased GaN etch rates until 50%BCl$_3$ was mixed to $Cl_2$. The GaN etching with pure $Cl Cl_2$ appears to be related to the combination of Cl$_2^{+}$ ion bombardment and the chemical reaction of Cl radicals. In the case of the GaN etching with Cl$_2$/BCl$_3$, in addition to the combined effect of$_2^{ +}$ ions and Cl radicals, $_BCl2^{+ }$ ions appear to be responsible for some of GaN etching even though they do not have significant effect on the GaN etching compared to $Cl_2^{+}$ and Cl. $Ga^{+ }$ , $GaCl^{+}$ , $GaCl_2^{+}$ , and $N_2^{+}$ were observed as the positive ions of etch products, and the intensities of these etch products showed the same trends as those of GaN etch rate. Among the etch products, Ga and $N_2$ appear to be the main etch products.

The solubility and structure of myosin and the properties of pork gel with NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 were investigated. Myofibrillar proteins (MPs) with phosphate were more solubilized with NaCl than with KCl (p < 0.05). CaCl2 and MgCl2 showed lower MP solubilities than those of NaCl and KCl (p < 0.05). The α-helix content of myosin was lower in KCl, CaCl2, and MgCl2 than in NaCl (p < 0.05). The pH of pork batter decreased in the order of KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, and CaCl2 (p < 0.05). The cooking yield of the pork gel manufactured with monovalent salts was higher than that of the pork gel manufactured with divalent salts (p < 0.05). The pork gel manufactured with KCl and MgCl2 showed lower hardness than that of the pork gel manufactured with NaCl. The solubility and structure of myosin were different with the different chloride salts and those led the different quality properties of pork gel. Therefore, the results of this study can be helpful for understanding the quality properties of low-slat meat products manufactured by replacing sodium chloride with different chloride salts.

Neuronal apoptotic events, consequently resulting in neuronal cell death, are occurred in hypoxic/ischemic condition. This cell death has been shown to be accompanied with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can attack cellular components such as nucleic acids, proteins and phospholipid. However, the underlying mechanisms of apoptosis induced in hypoxic/ischemic condition and its treatment methods are unsettled. Cobalt chloride $(CoCl_2)$ has been known to mimic hypoxic condition including the production of ROS. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol, has diverse pharmacologial activities in cell growth and death. This study was aimed to investigate the apoptotic mechanism by $CoCL_2$ and effects of EGCG on $CoCl_2-induced$ apoptosis in PC12 cells. Administration of $CoCl_2$ decreased cell survival in dose- and time-dependent manners and induced genomic DNA fragmentation. Treatment with $100{\mu}M$ EGCG for 30 min before PC12 cells were exposed to $150{\mu}M$$CoCl_2$, being resulted in the cell viability and DNA fragmentation being rescued. $CoCl_2$ caused morphologic changes such as cell swelling and condensed nuclei whereas EGCG attenuated morphologic changes by $CoCl_2$. EGCG suppressed the apoptotic peak and a loss of ${\Delta}{\psi}_m$ induced by $CoCl_2$. $CoCl_2$ decreased Bcl-2 expression but Bax expression was not changed in $CoCl_2$- treated cells. EGCG attenuated the Bcl-2 underexpression by $CoCl_2$. $CoCl_2$ augumented the cytochrome c release from mitochondria into cytoplasm and increased caspase-8, -9 and caspase-3 activity a marker of the apoptotic executing stage. EGCG ameliorated the incruement in caspase-8, -9 and -3 activity, and cytochrome c release by $CoCl_2$ NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine), a scavenger of ROS, attenuated $CoCl_2-induced$ apoptosis in consistent with those of EGCG. These results suggest that $CoCl_2$ induces apoptotic cell death through both mitochondria- and death receptor-dependent pathway and EGCG has neuroprotective effects against $CoCl_2-induced$ apoptosis in PC12 cells.
In order to see the single effect and interaction of potassium chloride(KCI) and calcium the chloride ($CaCl_2$) on the development of Drosophila melanogaster, the emergence rates of the five strains of the flies were examined from the media containing 0.0M, 0.5M, 0.1M, 0.2M, of $CaCl_2$ or KCI plus various concentrations of KCI or $CaCl_2$, and the results are presented as follows: 1. The emergence rate of D. melanogaster is not significantly different among strains but strikingly different among concentrations of KCI or $CaCl_2$; the emergence rate decreases as concentration of KCI or $CaCl_2$ increases. 2. The inhibitory effect of $CaCl_2$ on the emergence rates is greater than that of KCI, implying that the resistibility of the flies to KCI is greater than to $CaCl_2$. 3. The addition of small amount of $CaCl_2$ or KCI to KCI or $CaCl_2$ media counteracts the inhibitory effect of KCI or $CaCl_2$, but the addition of a little greater amounts of $CaCl_2$ or KCI to the KCI or $CaCl_2$ media enhance the inhibitory effect of the salts. 4. Thus, there may be some interaction of $K^+$ and $Ca^++$ ions in the inhibitory effect on the development(emergence rates) of Drosophila melanogaster.

The charge-transfer compound (OMTTF)AuCl$_4$ was prepared from the direct reaction of octamethylenethiafulvalene (OMTTF) with HAuCl$_4{\cdot}xH_2$O in THF. (OMTTF)$_2PtCl_4$, (OMTTF)_2IrCl_6{\cdot}2H_2$O, and (OMTTF)Os$Cl_5{\cdot}THF$ were also formed using $H_2PtCl_6{\cdot}xH_2O$, $H_2IrCl_6{\cdot}xH_2O$ and $H_2OsCl_6$, respectively. The prepared compounds were characterized by magnetic (EPR, magnetic susceptibility), spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis), electrochemical (CV) methods, and the powdered electrical conductivity measurement. The powdered electrical conductivities at room temperature were ~$10^{-7}S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$. The experimental results show that $OMTTF^+$ monocation radicals exist in all of the prepared compounds. The redox potential of OMTTF supports that $OMTTF^+$ is relatively stable. The magnetic properties indicate that there are significant magnetic interactions between the localized odd electrons on the central metal (Ir and Os) ions and the odd electrons resided on $OMTTF^+$ cation radicals in both (OMTTF) $_2IrCl_6{\cdot}2H_2O$ and (OMTTF)$OsCl_5{\cdot}THF$.
This study was conducted to investigate effect of temperature and NaCl on the seed germination and water absorption of Thuja orientalis. Seeds were treated with 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000ppm of NaCl and placed in different chambers at 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. And seed properties and relative water absorptions were analyzed. Germination decreased with the increase of both temperature and NaCl concentration, and especially the difference was obvious at $30^{\circ}C$. Dormancy and mortality increased with the increase of temperature in non-NaCl treatment. Two-way analysis of variance showed significant effects of temperature, NaCl concentration and interaction between temperature and NaCl concentration (p<0.001). Mean germination time increased with the increase of NaCl concentration at 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ but decreased at $30^{\circ}C$ because the seeds were mortal by NaCl high concentration, Germination speed and germination performance index decreased with the increase of NaCl concentration. Those represented decreasing tendency with NaCl concentration but high positive correlation with germination. Relative water absorption decreased with the increase of NaCl concentration and represented high values at $15^{\circ}C$, and showed high positive correlations with germination, germination speed and germination performance index. It was reported that the high temperature and salinity were inhibitive factors of seed germination of Thuja orientalis.
Calcium lactate (CL) prepared from powdered black snail (PBS) or its ashed powder (ABS), was investigated for ideal manufacturing conditions to optimize color, solubility and sensory quality. Based on the amount of PBS and 100 mL lactic acid (LA), the yields of PBS-CL were 300% and 15 g in 10% LA and 260% and 20 g in 20% LA. Yields of ABS-CL based on the amount ABS and 100 mL LA were 400% and 60 g in 10% LA and 329% and 66 g in 20% LA. Both of the yields were decreased with an increase of the LA concentration on the basis of PBS and ABS amounts, but proportionally increased with the increment in the LA concentration on the basis of LA volume. Optimal preparation times of the dehydrated PBS-CL and ABS-CL were, respectively, 4 hr and 5 hr at 10$0^{\circ}C$, 3 hr and 4 hr at 12$0^{\circ}C$, and 1 hr and 2 hr at 15$0^{\circ}C$, which showed shorter time in preparing the dehydrated ABS-CL. PBS-CL and ABS-CL were confirmed to be Ca($CH_3$CHOH$CO_2$)$_2$ by the analysis results of IR and $^1$H-NMR. Calcium contents of the anhydrous PBS-CL and ABS-CL were individually 15.4% (w/w) and 17.3% (w/w) representing 84.2% and 94.5% or each theoretical value. Colors or PBS-CL and ABS-CL were light yellow and light-greenish white each. Solubilities of PBS- CL and ABS-CL in distilled water at pH 3~8 were 5.43 and 6.11 g/100 mL, respectively, which demonstrated higher mean solubilities rather than the 4.74 g/100 mL of standard CL. Solubilities of PBS-CL (3.14~5.03 g/100 mL) and ABS-CL (4.69~6.05 g/100 mL) against soup soy sauce, 3% brine, Soju (Korean distilled liquor), thick soy sauce, grape juice and orange juice were higher than those of standard CL (2.94~5.84 g/100 mL). ABS-CL was believed to have a wide use range due to its low sourness while different applications of PBS-CL in food are expected due to its mild astringent taste and strong savory taste despite its strong bitter taste as estimated by sensory evaluation.
We examined the effect of hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) in chemical hypoxia-induced injury in mouse hepatocytes. Cell viability was significantly decreased by cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$), a well-known hypoxia mimetic agent in a time- and dose- dependent manner. Sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, a donor of $H_2S$) pretreatment before exposure to $CoCl_2$ significantly attenuated the $CoCl_2$-induced decrease of cell viability. $CoCl_2$ treatment resulted in an increase of intracellular ROS generation, which is inhibited by NaHS or N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC, a ROS scavenger), and p38 MAPK phosphorylation, which is also blocked by NaHS or NAC. The $CoCl_2$-induced increase of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was attenuated by NaHS, NAC, and SB 203580 (p38 MAPK inhibitor). The $CoCl_2$-induced decrease of cell viability was also attenuated by NaHS, NAC, and SB 203580 pretreatment. Additionally, NaHS inhibited the $CoCl_2$-induced COX-2. Similar to the effect of NaHS, NAC blocked $CoCl_2$-induced COX-2 expression. Furthermore, NS-398 (a selective COX-2 inhibitor) attenuated not only the $CoCl_2$-induced increase of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, it also decreased cell viability. Taken together, $H_2S$ protects primary cultured mouse hepatocytes against $CoCl_2$-induced cell injury through inhibition of the ROS-activated p38 MAPK cascade and the COX-2 pathway.
The purpose of this study was to investigate antimicrobial effectiveness of Omija (Schizandra chinensis Baillon) treated with $ClO_2$ (chlorine dioxide) concentration (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ppm), washing time (30, 60 and 90 sec) and multiple proportion (x1, x2, x3 and x4). The seven groups were divided into control (Omija without washing water treatment), W-T (Omija treated by tap water ($20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) for 30 seconds), $ClO_2$-10 (Omija treated by 10 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-15 (Omija treated by 15 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-20 (Omija treated by 20 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-25 (Omija treated by 25 ppm $ClO_2$), $ClO_2$-30 (Omija treated by 30 ppm $ClO_2$), and then they were detected number of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold. The rate of inactivation was found, for microorganisms of total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold, to increase with a increase of $ClO_2$ treatment concentration and multiple proportion. No total aerobic bacteria, yeast and mold in $ClO_2$-30 sample treated for 30 sec, $ClO_2$-15 treated for 60 sec and $ClO_2$-10 treated for 90 sec were detected, and in $ClO_2$-30 Omija with multiple proportion ${\times}1$ (Omija : 30 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:1 (w/w)), $ClO_2$-20 with ${\times}2$ (Omija : 20 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:2 (w/w)) and $ClO_2$-15 with ${\times}4$ (Omija : 15 ppm $ClO_2$ solution ratio was 1:4 (w/w)) respectively.
