Microwave Dielectric Properties of CaTiO$_3$and CaTiO$_3$-TiO$_2$Ceramics (CaTiO$_3$및 CaTiO$_3$-TiO$_2$세라믹스의 마이크로파 유전특성)

  • Microwave dielectric properties of CaTiO3 and CaTiO3-TiO2 ceramics for the composition range between 40 and 50 mol% CaO in CaO-TiO2 binary system were investigated. CaTiO3 ceramics with50 mol% CaO showed the dielectric constant (e,) of 178, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(c,) of+1000 ppm/'c and the qualify factor Q of 2760 (f0=2.7 GHz ). Dielectric constant and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of ceramics with dual phases of CaTiO3 and TiO2 decreased gradually from those of CaTiO3 as the CaO content decreased. Q value and density were found to have minimum at the composition of 47 mol% CaO. The degradation of Q value and density in dual phase ceramics seems to be caused by the large pores at grain boundaries and/or within grains remained after rapid growth of CaTiO3 grains as TiO2 Phase decreased.

  • The defect structure of calcium titanates with CaO excess or $TiO_2$ excess was studied by measuring electrical conductivities as a funcition of oxygen partial pressure at $85O^{\circ}C$ to $1050^{\circ}C$. Execess CaO may divide itself equally between A and B sites, resulting in $Ca_{Ti}$" and Vo", while excess $TiO_2$ form $V_{Ca}$" and Vo". The equilibrium electrical conductivity data indicate that the solubilities of CaO and $TiO_2$ in $CaTiO_3$ are 5000ppm and 2000ppm, respectively. Oxygen vacancies contributed to the ionic conduction which flatten the conductivity minima and did not make any defect association with oppositely charged defects.ely charged defects.

  • Effect of the particle size of $MgTiO_3$ and $CaTiO_3$ on the microstructural evolution during sintering of $0.93MgTiO_3-0.07CaTiO_3$ system was investigated. Microwave dielectric characteristics of the sintered ceramics were also measured. The microstructural evolutions were explained with an emphasis on the entrapping behavior of $CaTiO_3$ grain into the $MgTiO_3$ grain and were correlated with microwave dielectric characteristics. With an increasing particle size ratio between $CaTiO_3$and $MgTiO_3$, the fraction of entraped $CaTiO_3$ grains increased, which grain growth of $MgTiO_3$were concurrently accelerated due to decreasing drag force of its boundary migration. Besides, $CaTiO_3$-grain entrapment into the $MgTiO_3$grain interior led to decreaseing quality factor values.

  • Microwave properties of $CaTiO_{3}$, MgO and CaO added $MgTiO_{3}$ ceramics are investigated. In the composition of $(Mg_{0.915}Ca_{0.085})TiO_3$, dielectric constant($varepsilon _T$) was 22, Qxf value was 50000, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($gamma_T$) approached to near zero $ppm/^{\circ}C$.$MgTiO_{3}$ ceramics with 0.1 mol of MgO showed the highest Qxf calue of 131000, dielectric constant of 17, and r, of -$50ppm/^{\circ}C$. Dielectric constant of 8 mol% CaO added to $MgTiO_{3}$-MgO was 20. Qxf valus was 52000, and sf was zero $ppm/^{\circ}C$. $MgTiO_{3}$-Mg0-Ca0 system showed higher Qxf value than ($Mg_{1-x}, Ca_x$) Ti03 system.

  • The microwave dielectric properties of $CaZrO_3$ ceramics with addition of $CaTiO_3$ were studied. The effect of glass addition on the low-temperature sintering and microwave dielectric properties of $CaZrO_3-CaTiO_3$ ceramics were also evaluated to develop the materials for functional substrates of low-temperature co-fired ceramics. When $10-20 wt\%$ of lithium borosilicate glass was added, the sintering temperature of the $CaZrO_3-CaTiO_3$ ceramics decreased from $1450^{\circ}C$ to below $900^{\circ}C$. As the $T_f$ of glass frits and $CaZrO_3$ are slightly negative and that of $CaTiO_3$ is significantly positive, zero $T_f$ could be realized by mixing an appropriate amount of $CaTiO_3$ with $CaZrO_3$. The $CaZrO_3-CaTiO_3$ ceramics sintered at $875^{\circ}C$ with $15wt\%$ glass frits showed the relative density of $98\%$, permittivity of 23, quality factor of 2500 GHz, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency of $ -3 ppm/^{\circ}C$.

  • It was examined that the relationship between microstructures, electrical properties and crystal structure of (1-x)CaMnO$_3$-xCaTiO$_3$solid solution system which was made by mixing a semiconducting material CaMnO$_3$of low resistance and a dielectric material CaTiO$_3$of high resistance with variable ratios (x=0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0). As the CaTiO$_3$increased, the resistance, B constant and lattice constant were increased, but the grain size was decreased. On particular, above 50wt% of CaTiO$_3$, the resistance at 2 5$^{\circ}C$ was rapidly increased due to the correlation in connectivity of the lattices between the conductive Mn$^{+4}$ octahedron and the insulative Ti$^{+4}$ octahedron.ron.

  • The effect of x on microwave dielectric properties of the $(1-x)Mg_4Ta_2O_9-x(TiO_2,\;CaTiO_3,\;SrTiO_3)$ ceramics for microwave components were investigated. All spcecimens prepared by the conventional mixed oxied method and sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$. Microwave dielectric properties of the $(1-x)Mg_4Ta_2O_9-xTiO_2$ ceramics were influenced by $MgTi_2O_5$ phase. Also the microwave dielectric properties of the $(1-x)Mg_4Ta_2O_9-x(TiO_2,\;CaTiO_3,\;SrTiO_3)$ ceramics were dominated with an addition of $CaTiO_3\;and\;SrTiO_3$. The dielectric constant $(\varepsilon_r)$, quality factor $(Q{\times}f_r)$ and temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency $(TCRF,\;\tau_f)$ of the $(1-x)Mg_4Ta_2O_9-x(TiO_2,\;CaTiO_3,\;SrTiO_3)$ ceramics were $12.96\sim70.98,\;5,132\sim186,410GHZ$ and $-35.82\sim+75.96ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively, and depend on x and addition materials.

  • Chemical analyses and Rietveld structural refinement with powder X-ray diffraction data were done for Nb-rich perovskite, named latrappite ($Ca_2NbFe^{3+}O_6$)from the Oka, Quebec, Canada. Latrappite is shown to be a member of a continuous solid solution of $CaTiO_3-NaNbO_3-Ca_2NbFe^{3+}O_6$ and approximately $(Ca_{1.5}Na_{0.4})\;(Nb_{0.1}Ti_{0.6}Fe_{0.4})O_6$ in composition. The crystal structure of latrappite, determined by Rietveld refinement, is similar to that of perovskite ($CaTiO_3$). It differs in that replacement of Ti by Nb and $Fe^{3+}$ results in greater distortion and tilting of the $TiO_6$ framework octahedra relative to $CaTiO_3$. Revised unit-cell parameters of latrappite are a=5.4474(4), b=5.5264(4), c=7.7519(5) ${\AA},\;V=233.4(3){\AA}^3$ space group Pbnm.

  • Sintering behavior and dielectric peroperties of $xCaTiO_3-La(Zn_{1/2}Ti_{1/2})O_3$ system were investigated for better understanding of the microwave dielectric materials. In $xCaTiO_3-(1-x)La(Zn_{1/2}Ti_{1/2})O_3$ systems, solid solution type was focused as a function of composition(x=0.4-0.6) and sintered density. With increasing the sintered density, the relative dielectric constant was decreased and Q value was increased and then saturated. In solid solution type, dielectric constant was increased with increasing $CaTiO_3$ content. In $0.5\;CaTiO_3-0.5\; La(Zn_{1/2}Ti_{1/2})O_3$ case, dielectric constant(=48) and temperature coefficient of resonace frequency$(=-1 ppm/^{\circ}C$) were obtained.
