  • This study selected the optimal catalyst for the process of producing $C_9$-alcohol by hydrogenating $C_9$-aldehyde, and carried out an experiment in order to establish the operating condition for maximizing the yield of $C_9$-alcohol. The BET surface area and the specific area of copper were most excellent in $CuO/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ (60:30:10 wt%) catalyst produced using acetate as a precursor of copper and $Na_2CO_3$ as a precipitant, and the catalyst also showed the highest performance in $C_9$-aldehyde hydrogenation. Using a trickle bed reactor loaded with optimized catalyst, we attained 94.1 wt% yield of $C_9$-alcohol under the condition of $175^{\circ}C$, 800 psi and $WHSV=3hr^{-1}$. According to the result of comparing with other catalysts used in the hydrogenation of aldehyde, the catalyst showed similar performance to that of Ni/kieselghur and higher than that of $Cu-Ni-Cr-Na/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni-Mo/Al_2O_3$. According to the result of examining the stability of the catalyst through a long-term catalysis test, the yield of $C_9$-alcohol decreased slowly after around 72 hours due to the increasing production of high boiling-point byproducts.

  • Cloud-point data at $230^{\circ}C$ and 1,800 bar are presented for two poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)(PEVA) copolymers[9.9mol% and 17.8mol% vinyl alcohol(VA)] in ethylene, propane, propylene, n-butane, 1-butene, dimethyl ether(DME), and chlorodifluromethane(CDFM). The static type experimental apparatus with a view cell has been used for the experiment at the high pressure and temperature. The pressure-temperature (P-T) loops of PEVA(9.9mol% VA) copolymer-DME mixtures are presented at copolymer concentrations of 1.4wt% to 20.0wt%. Also, we presented the phase behavior of PEVA(17.8mol% VA) copolymer-DME system at copolymer concentration of 1.9wt% to 6.8wt%. The cloud-point curves for the PEVA copolymers in dimethyl ether showed single phase above 480 bar as a result of the hydrogen bonding between the vinyl alcohol unit and dimethyl ether. The pressure-concentration(P-x) isotherm loops of PEVA(9.9mol% and 17.8mol% VA)-DME system are obtained. The cloud-point curves for PEVA(9.9mol% and 17.8 mol% VA) copolymers andthe ethylene, propane, propylene, n-butane, 1-butene, and CDFM all show negative slopes of phase behavior and are located at pressures below 1,800 bar. For PEVA copolymer-DME system(9.9mol% VA), cloud-point curves show positive slopes that decrease in pressures with decrease in temperature in the temperature range of $80^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$.

  • Prickly pear juice(PPJ) extracted from prickly pear fruit (Opuntia ficus-indica)was used as raw material for the production of alcoholic beverages. Prickly pear juice (PPJ) had 0.88 oBrix of soluble solid, pH 3.96 and 0.14% of total acidity. Alcohol fermentation of 25% PPJ including 22 oBrix of sugar and 1$\times$106 of inoculum was suitable for alcohol fermentation indicating the rapid decrease of sugar content. The 22 oBrix of sugar in PPJ (25%)GJ (50%) mixture was changed to 6.5 oBrix after fermentation at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. The alcohol content was 9.2% (w/v). PPJ (70%)/GJ (30%) mixture produced alcoholic beverage with 6.9% alcohol content resulting in the gradual decrease of soluble for 7 days. On the other hand, PPJ (50%)/GJ(50%) mixture carried out completely the alcohol fermentation at 22$^{\circ}C$ for 6 days and enhanced the red color of alcoholic beverages.

  • Moderate alcohol consumption has been known to be associated with reduced risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). We assessed the association between alcohol consumption and CHD-related risk factors [hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM) , high total cholesterol, high triglyceride (TG), low HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), and high LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C)] in Korean. After excluding those with extreme intake values, the number of final subjects included in the analysis was 4,662 Korean adults aged over 20 years (1,961 men, 2,701 women) who participate in the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were divided into four or five groups; none-alcohol consumption group, moderate alcohol consumption group (<15 or 15.0-29.9 g/d), heavy alcohol consumption group (30-69.9 g/d or ${\geq}$ 70 g/d in men, ${\geq}$ 30 g/d in women). Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated from logistic regression adjusting for potential covariates. Alcohol consumption was inversely associated with low HDL-C in both men and women. However, heavy alcohol intake (${\geq}$ 70 g/d) significantly increased risk for hypertension, DM, and hypertriglyceridemia in men. The frequency of alcohol intake was also associated with CHD risk. The risk for low HDLC was decreased with alcohol consumption (${\geq}$ 1 times/wk), but frequent alcohol intake (${\geq}$ 4 times/wk) increased the risk for hypertension. This study revealed that moderate alcohol consumption has protective effect on CHD-related risk factors in Korean population.

  • This study was investigated quality characteristics of alcohol fermentation broths and by-produce produced from 4 type of brown rice varieties. The result showed that Daeanbyeo(A), Baekjinju(B) and Sulkyeong(C) produced the high alcohol content(9.5, 9.7 and 9.8%) by non-steamed alcohol fermentation period whereas the Goami(D) gave poor content(3.5%). In addition, the effect of total free sugar content were examined for non-steamed alcohol fermentation period. Among these 4 type, 244.2 mg% showed the highest contents in the Goami(D). The steamed alcohol fermentation showed higher sugar content in overall with slight difference between the various brown rice. The total dietary fiber content variation according to the alcohol fermentation methods in non-steamed and steamed periods came up with the highest content in the Sulkyeong(C) fellowed by Baekjinju(B), Daeanbyeo(A), and Goami(D). The total free amino acid content by alcohol fermentation methods timed out to show the highest content in non-steamed Goami by-product followed by Goami powder steamed Goami by-product Although, the above result revealed the lowest alcohol fermentation efficiency in non-steamed Goami, but it had the highest by-product utilizing capacity. Therefore, Goami(D) was the lowest alcohol yield in alcohol fermentation treated with non-steam among groups, but Goami by-products of the Goami had the various nutritional constitutes including starch, dietary fibers and free amino acids, which can be suggested to be used as various functional food ingredient.

  • To do breath alcohol measurement, a sensor is necessary that it can detect low alcohol gas concentration of 0.01% at least. In this work, a capacitance-type alcohol gas sensor using porous silicon layer is developed to measure low alcohol gas concentration. The sensor using porous silicon layer has some sensitivity at room temperature by very large effective surface area, but there is still much room for improvement. In this experiment, we measured the capacitance of the sensor under 254 nm UV light on the porous silicon layer, in which alcohol solution was kept in a flask at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$ by a heater. As the result, the improvement of sensitivity by illuminating UV light was observed. The increasing rate of the capacitance was shown to be double more than those measured under UV-off state. It is supposed that UV light activates response of the oriental and interfacial polarizations which have slow relaxation time for AC field.

  • Optimal extraction conditions were established from the difference of quality characteristics according to extraction conditions of Ssangwha extracts(SWE). Extract yields of SWE obtained from the established extraction conditions were as follows. The maximum yield was 48.90% at extraction temperature 90$^{\circ}C$ and alcohol concentration 50%, extraction yield and alcohol concentration of extraction solvent was proportioned. Increase of extraction yields at extraction temperature 80∼90$^{\circ}C$ and more than alcohol concentration 30% had slowdown tendency according to increase of alcohol concentration. At this view point, the optimum extraction conditions were alcohol concentration 30% and more than extraction temperature 80$^{\circ}C$. In this study, optimal extraction conditions of SWE were extraction temperature 90$^{\circ}C$ and alcohol concentration 30%.

  • In a continuation of our previous studies on blood compatibility profiles of anion-substituted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes, in which hydroxyl groups have been replaced with carboxymethyl (C-PVA) and sulfonyl groups (S-PVA), we have studied the activation of complement components and the changes in white cell and platelet count in vitro and compared them with those of unmodified PVA, Cuprophane, and low-density polyethylene. Complement activation of fluid phase components, C3a, Bb, iC3b, and SC5b-9, and of bound phases, C3c, C3d, and SC5b-9, were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblot, respectively. The changes in the number of white cells and platelets following complement activation were counted using a Coulter counter. C-PVA and S-PVA activated C3 to a lesser extent than did PVA, which we attribute to the diminished level of surface nucleophiles of the samples. In addition, C- and S-PVA exhibit increased inhibition of Bb production, resulting in a decrease in the extent of C5 activation. Consequently, because of the reduced activation of C3 and C5, C- and S-PVA samples cause marked decreases in the SC5b-9 levels in plasma. We also found that the negatively charged sulfonate and carboxylate groups of the samples cause a greater extent of adsorbtion of the positively charged anaphylatoxins, C3a and C5a, because of strong electrostatic attraction, which in turn provides an inhibition of chemotaxis and activation of leukocytes. The ability to inhibit complement production, together with the binding ability of anaphylatoxins of the C- and S-PVA samples, leads to a prominent decrease in lysis of leukocytes as well as activation of platelets.
