The correlation between Spin Polarized Tunneling and Magnetic Moment in Co-Mn and Co-Fe Alloy Films (Co1-xFex와 Co1-xMnx 강자성 전이 합금 박막의 자기 모멘트와 터널 접합에 의한 스핀 편극치의 상관관계 연구)

  • Understanding the spin polarization (P) has been an ongoing research challenge. The $Co_{1-x}Mn_x$ (x=0.27, 1) and $Co_{1-x}Fe_x$ (x=0, 0.5, 1) films were prepared using UHV-MBE system. For these films, the magnetic properties and spin polarization were investigated using SQUID and Meservey-Tedrow technique, respectively. Although measured P is uncorrelated to the bulk magnetic moment (M) in Co-Fe and Ni-Fe alloy films, it correlates with M in some alloys such as Co-Mn and Ni-Cu. The results can be understood by the tunneling currents made up of the hybridized sp-d electrons near the Fermi-energy level. Our work shows the feasibility to tailor new materials with large P values.

$CO_2$Decomposition Properties of Ternary Ferrites Synthesized by the Wet Processing (습식 합성법으로 제조한 3원계 페라이트의 $CO_2$분해 특성 연구)

  • 산소 결핍 페라이트 (oxygen deficient ferrites, ODF) MF $e_2$ $O_{4-}$$\delta$/는 약 30$0^{\circ}C$의 낮은 온도에서 온실가스중 하나인 $CO_2$를 C와 $O_2$로 분해시킨다. 본 연구에서는 $CO_2$분해 촉매로서 3원계 초미세 페라이트 N $i_{x}$Z $n_{1-x}$F $e_2$ $O_4$와 N $i_{x}$ $Co_{1-x}$F $e_2$ $O_4$를 수열합성법과 공침법 등의 습식 합성법으로 각각 합성하여 이들 분말의 특성과 $CO_2$분해 특성을 고찰하였다. 페라이트의 XRD 결과, 결정구조는 모두 전형적인 스피넬 구조로 동일하게 나타났다. BET 비표면적은 수열합성법으로 제조한 3원계 페라이트의 경우 110$m^2$/g 이상으로 공침법으로 제조한 페라이트보다 비교적 큰 값을 나타냈고 분말 입자크기 또한 약 10nm의 매우 미세한 분말을 얻을 수 있었다. 3원계 산소 결핍 페라이트의 $CO_2$분해 효율은 공침법으로 합성한 것보다 수열합성법으로 합성한 것이 더 우수하게 나타났으며, N $i_{x}$ $Co_{1-x}$F $e_2$ $O_{4-}$$\delta$/보다 N $i_{x}$Z $n_{1-x}$F $e_2$ $O_{4-}$$\delta$/가 우수한 것으로 나타났다.

Thermoelectric Properties of Co1-xFexSb3 Prepared by Encapsulated Induction Melting (밀폐유도용해로 제조된 Co1-xFexSb3의 열전특성)

  • [ $Co_{1-x}Fe_xSb_3$ ] skutterudites were synthesized by encapsulated induction melting and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase ${\delta}-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by the subsequent heat treatment at 773 K for 24 hours in vacuum. However, ${\delta}-CoSb_3$ was decomposed to FeSb2 and Sb when $x{\leq}0.3$, which means that the solubility limit of Fe to Co is x<0.3. The positive signs of Seebeck coefficients for all Fe-doped specimens revealed that Fe atoms acted as p-type dopants by substituting Co atoms. Thermoelectric properties were remarkably enhanced by Fe doping and optimum composition was found to be $Co_{0.7}Fe_{0.3}Sb_3$ in this study.

Chemical and Electronic structures of $Co_{1-x}Ga_x$ alloys by X-ray Analyses (X-선을 이용한 $Co_{1-x}Ga_x$ 합금계의 화학구조와 전자구조)

  • Transiton-metal gallides attract wide interest as a candidate for high-temperature structural materials. In a wide composition range, in which it was known that Co-Ga alloy have CsCl (B2) crystallographic structure, a systematic study on the correlation between physical properties and electronic structures of Co-gallides was performed. $Co_{l-x}Ga$ $_{x}$ alloys ($0.35\leq$x$\leq0.55$) were prepared by arc-melting method and were annealed at $1000 ^{\circ}C$ for 48hour to increase the homogeneity. In this composition range all the prepared alloys have the CsCl (B2) structure. The chemical states and the electronic structure were studied by using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and exhibit different physical properties depending on the composition. During the annealing, a significant oxidation has happened and all the oxygen atoms are incorporated with the Ga atoms to form a $Ga_2O_3$ phase. In a view point of electronic structure, the $Co_{l-x}Ga$ $_{x}$ alloys were formed by the Ga(p) - Co(d) hybridization.

An Investigation of the Catalytic Effect with $Nd_{1-x}Sr_{x}CoO_{3}$ Perovskite in a Sealed-off $CO_2$ Laser

  • To improve the lifetime and output power in a sealed-off $CO_2$ laser, a series of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$(x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.40, 0.50, 0.60, 0.75) perovskite-type compounds has been synthesized and used for a cathode material. Using a typical method samples were sintered at 1150$^{\circ}$C and their structures were determined as a cubic form by means of XRD analysis. The degrees of $CO_2$ dissociation were measured by PAS (photoacoustic spectroscopy) with the lapse of time. In the case of $Nd_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$$CoO_3$, which showed the highest catalytic cathode effect, only 7% of the initial $CO_2$ concentration were dissociated at 30 torr of gas mixture and 5 mA of discharge current. The more the gas pressure decreased and the discharge current increased, the more the degree of dissociation occurred. The ability of catalytic cathode to regenerate CO$_2$ in the laser cavity lies in order for x, 0.60 > 0.50 > 0.40 > 0.75 > 0.25 ${\gg}$ 0.0. Except for the case of x = 0.0 the amounts of $CO_2$ dissociation were found to be within 7-15% of the initial $CO_2$ concentration.

Zn/Co ZIF derived synthesis of Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles and application as high-performance trimethylamine sensors (Co가 도핑된 ZnO 나노입자의 Zn/Co ZIF 유도 합성 및 고성능 트리메틸아민 센서로의 응용)

  • $Zn_{1-x}Co_x$ Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF) (x = 0~0.05) were prepared by the co-precipitation of $Zn^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ using 2-methylimidazole, which were converted into pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Homogeneous Zn/Co ZIFs were achieved at x < 0.05 owing to the strong coordination of the imidazole linker to $Zn^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$, facilitating atomic-scale doping of Co into ZnO via annealing. By contrast, heterogeneous Zn/Co ZIFs were formed at $x{\geq}0.05$, resulting in the formation of $Co_3O_4$ second phase. To investigate the potential as high-performance gas sensors, the gas sensing characteristics of pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles were evaluated. The sensor using 3 at% Co-doped ZnO exhibited an unprecedentedly high response and selectivity to trimethylamine, whereas pure ZnO nanoparticles did not. The facile, bimetallic ZIF derived synthesis of doped-metal oxide nanoparticles can be used to design high-performance gas sensors.

Mossbauer Study for the Cation Distribution of Co-ferrite (CoxFe1-xO4) Thin Films (Co-ferrite 박막에서 양이온 거동에 관한 Mössbauer 분광 연구)

  • The crystallographic properties and cation distribution of oxyspinels ferrite $Co_xFe_{1-x}O_4$ thin films have been explored by X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and conversion electron $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy (CEMS). Thin films are prepared by sol-gel method. Normal spinel structure is transformed to inverse spinel structure with increasing Co concentration CEMS results indicate that most of $Fe^{3+}$ ions are substituted to $Co^{3+}$ions. Accordingly $Co^{2+}$ ions on octahedral site migrate to tetrahedral site. Magnetic moment is decreased with increasing Co concentration, which means high spin $Fe^{3+}$ ions are replaced by low spin $Co^{3+}$.

  • Magnetic properties of (Fe(sub)1-xCo(sub)x)(sub)89Zr11 amorphous films fabricated by RF sputtering method have been investigated as a function of Co content x. By means of two step field annealing at 190~20$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes in the magnetic field of 130 Oe, the film with x=0.4 among the samples shows the superior soft magnetic properties in spite of showing the high magnetostriction. For example, the obtained properties of coercivity and differential permeability measured in an exciting field of 10 mOe at the frequency of 8.7 MHz are 0.25 Oe and 280, respectively. It is confirmed that such behavior is due to the variation of magnetic anisotropies caused by a optimal compressive stress within the film.
