Interrelationship between Kimchi Ripening and CO2 Concentration of the Headspace in Flexible Packages Included with CO2 Absorber (CO2 흡수제 함유 김치포장에서 CO2 농도와 제품 숙성도의 상호관련성)

  • CO2 concentration in kimchi package has emerged recently as a potential index of product ripening to be monitored or sensed in intelligent packaging. Considering that addition of CO2 absorber into the flexible kimchi package changes behavior of its CO2 concentration, ripening of kimchi in total acidity, package CO2 concentration in partial pressure (PCO2) and package volume at 10℃ were estimated by mathematical model for two size packages included with different CO2 absorbers. In small size package containing 0.5 kg of kimchi, relatively less gas permeable low density polyethylene (LDPE) sachet of the absorber was found to give rise of PCO2 linearly correlated with acidity at acceptable conditions of absorber amount and size. The levels of PCO2 at optimum ripening were different with absorber amount. However, highly gas permeable microporous spunbonded film (Tyvek) sachet did not show the linear relationship except a condition of 1.5 g of CO2 absorbent. In large size package containing 2.0 kg, absorber sachets of LDPE and Tyvek could give the linear relationship between product acidity and package PCO2 but at different levels (PCO2 of package with LDPE sachet: 0.46~0.79 bar, PCO2 of package with Tyvek sachet: 0.00~0.75 bar). The PCO2 at optimal ripening was found to be less variable with LDPE sachets than with Tyvek ones. Use of package CO2 concentration as an indicator of kimchi ripening was shown to be possible on the limited conditions where the linear relationship between them is established or confirmed.

Comparison between Congestion Levels and Amount of $CO_2$ Emissions on Arterials (단속류 간선도로에서 지정체와 $CO_2$ 배출량 비교)

  • It has been presumed that the amount of vehicle's $CO_2$ emission would highly related to vehicle's cruising speeds on highways. In this study, it was tested if vehicle's $CO_2$ emissions would relate to the types of highways and the level of congestion. The results showed that the amount of $CO_2$ emission changes depending on (1) the vehicles' cruising speeds (b) congestion levels, and (c) the types of intersections. It was found that the vehicle acceleration and deceleration methods increases the amount of $CO_2$ emission up to 12%. It was also found that it changed up to 30% and 40% depending on the level of congestion and the types of intersections, respectively. The findings imply that the amount of $CO_2$ emission from vehicles should be improved when vehicles' cruising speeds are well managed through congestion management.

  • An accelerated life testing(ALT) for aluminum electrolytic capacitors is conducted and analyzed. A testing equipment, which consists of part fixtures, relay board, controller, video bridge and microcomputer, is made for the ALT. Load factors are temperature with four levels and voltage with three levels. Base on 'optimized 4:2:1 plan', 2,000 electrolytic capacitors are allocated at 12 experimental conditions(; 4 levels of temperature ${\times}3$ levels of voltage), and the ALT is conducted. From the experimental results, an acceleration model is derived and acceleration factors are estimated. A discussion on the experimental results is included.

The Dynamic Analysis between Environmental Quality, Energy Consumption, and Income (소득 및 에너지소비와 환경오염의 관계에 대한 분석)

  • The ARDL(Autoregressive Distributed Lag) method is employed analyzes the long-run equilibrium relationships among environmental pollution($CO_2$ emissions) per capita, income levels per capita, and energy consumption per capita. The error correction model is employed to analyze the short-term effects of income and energy consumption on $CO_2$ emissions. The Toda-Yammamoto method is employed for causal analysis among the three variables. The results show that income levels, energy consumption, and $CO_2$ emissions are cointegrated. We found the N type relationship between income and $CO_2$ emissions. Long-term elasticities of income and energy consumption with respect to $CO_2$ emission were greater than their short-term elasticities. There were a bilateral causality between energy consumption and $CO_2$ emissions. There was a unilateral causality from $CO_2$ emissions to income and from energy consumption to income not vice versa. Energy consumption can be an important variable to contribute to forecasting $CO_2$ emissions.

  • This study aimed at developing high-efficiency RDF(refuse derived fuels) fuel in order to use RDF energy rationally and to recycle industrial product. As most studies in this area are concentrated in large combustion apparatuses such as kilns, but this study was focused on the small-sized heating systems, applying them directly to grate type boiler which has a heating capacity of $66{\sim}132m^2$. The different kinds of fuel are experimented including RDF. Coke and Waste Tire. First, for this, we experimented and analyzed RDF to see the change in its mass and heating value. Also, four kinds of exhaust gas are sampled by gas analyzer including CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$ at different temperature. As a result, the levels of CO concentration of RDF are higher than these of coke and waste tire. But, the levels of NO, $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ concentration of RDF and coke were lower then the levels when waste tire is burned.

  • To determine the effect of dietary potassium and lysine levels on blood parameters, serum and bone composition, 360 male broiler chicks of 3 days of age were used in a completely randomized $3{\times}3$ factorial experiment for 6 weeks. Experimental diets contained three supplemented levels of dietary potassium (0.3, 0.6 and 1.2%) and three supplemented levels of dietary lysine (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4%). Dietary levels of potassium and lysine did not influence blood pH, $pCO_2$, $pO_2$, $HCO_3$ and total $CO_2$ and interaction between potassium and lysine was not shown (p > 0.05). Serum lysine and arginine contents were significantly different by the levels of dietary lysine (p < 0.05). Lysine-arginine antagonism was observed in high lysine diet. But increasing dietary potassium did not alleviated the lysine-arginine antagonism. Serum sodium, potassium and chloride were not affected by dietary potassium and lysine levels (p > 0.05). Femur weight, length and P contents were affected by the levels of dietary lysine (p < 0.01). But no difference was observed in femur ash and Ca contents (p > 0.05). Interaction between potassium and lysine was shown in ash and P contents (p < 0.01).

Concentrations of Criteria Pollutants in Indoor and Ambient Air of Public Facilities in Taegu Area (대구지역 공중이용시설의 실내 $\cdot$ 외 공기 중 기준성오염물질의 농도)

  • A comprehensive air quality monitoring was carried out in this study to investigate the concentrations of criteria air pollutants in indoor and outdoor air of public facilities in Taegu area. Four different kinds of public facilities were seleced as sampling sites, which are underground stores, stations & terminals, general hospitals, and department stores. Each group of the public facilities was consisted of three different sampling sites. As a consequence, a total of 12 different sampling sites were surveyed throughout this study. Sampling was conducted simultaneously indoors, three times per day (in the morning, afternoon, and evening) and four times per year (spring, summer, fall, and winter) at each sampling site during the period of October 1994 to July 1995. A range of criteria pollutants were measured in order to obtain a broad profile of indoor and ambient air quality, including total suspended particles (TSP), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), formaldehyde (HCHO), sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$), and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$). In addition, temperature, relative humidity, and air current were measured on site together with those air pollutants. Results of this study indicated that the indoor levels of TSP, CO, $SO_2, and NO_2$ appeared to be generally higher in stations/terminals and underground stores than those in department stores and hospitals. However, HCHO and $CO_2$ were found to have higher levels in the department stores and hospitals than other places, indicating that the effects of indoor sources for these pollutants are significantly different from other combustion related pollutants such as TSP, CO, and $SO_2$. It was also found that there are marked seasonal and daily variations both in indoor and outdoor air quality. In general, combustion related pollutants such as CO, $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ showed a typical pattern of higher levels in winter than insummer, and also higher in the morning and/or in the evening than in the afternoon. However, the seasonal and daily patterns of HCHO appeared to be opposite to the combustion related pollutants, i.e., higher both in summer and in the afternoon, implying the effect of temperature on the volatilization from indoor sources of HCHO. Results of correlation analyses between indoor and outdoor air quality also indicated that the effects of outdoor sources on the indoor levels of TSP, $SO_2$, CO, and $NO_2$ and much significant, whilst no significant correlations between indoor and outdoor levels were found for HCHO and $CO_2$.

A Study on the Optimal Emission of CO2 due to Climate Change : An Application for Large Purse Seine (기후변화가 대형선망 고등어 어업의 최적탄소배출량에 미치는 영향분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the optimal $CO_2$ emission in the maximum economic yield (MEY), maximum sustainable yield (MSY), and open access (OA) using a bioeconomic model. The results are as follows; in the case of $E_{MEY}$, $E_{MSY}$, and $E_{OA}$ levels, $CO_2$ emissions are estimated at $150,704,746CO_2/kg$, $352,211,193CO_2/kg$, and $301,409,492CO_2/kg$ respectively. We show that the $E_{MEY}$ is more efficient than the other levels. That is, the level of $E_{MEY}$ signifies the optimal economic fishing usage as the most economically efficient usage for large purse seine fishery catching mackerel species. The emission of $CO_2$ in $E_{MEY}$ is the lowest level. Also, the impacts of climate changes such as ocean temperature increase, ocean acidification, and the combined impact thereof show that the biomass of mackerel decreases.

Effect of elevated pCO2 on thermal performance of Chattonella marina and Chattonella ovata (Raphidophyceae)

  • Ocean acidification and warming, identified as environmental concerns likely to be affected by climate change, are crucial determinants of algal growth. The ichthyotoxic raphidophytes Chattonella species are responsible for huge economic losses and environmental impact worldwide. In this study, we investigated the impact of CO2 on the thermal performance curves (TPCs) of Chattonella marina and Chattonella ovata grown under temperatures ranging from 13 to 34℃ under ambient pCO2 (350 μatm) and elevated pCO2 (950 μatm). TPCs were comparable between the species or even between pCO2 levels. With the exception of the critical thermal minimum (CTmin) for C. ovata, CTmin for C. marina and the thermal optimum (Topt) and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) for both species did not change with elevation of pCO2 levels. While CO2 enrichment increased the maximum photosynthetic rates (Pmax) up to 125% at the Totp of 30℃, specific growth rates were not significantly different under elevated pCO2 for the two species. Overall, C. ovata is likely to benefit from climate change, potentially widening its range of thermal tolerance limit in highly acidic waters and contributing to prolonged phenology of future phytoplankton assemblages in coastal waters.

High Purity Hydrogen Production by Redox Cycle Operation (산화-환원 싸이클 조업에 의한 고순도 수소생성)

  • High purity hydrogen, 97-99 vol.%, with CO at just ppm levels was obtained in a fixed bed of iron oxide employing the steam-iron cycle operation with reduction at 823K and oxidation in a steam-$N_2$ mixture at 773K TGA experiments indicated that temperature of the reduction step as well as its duration are important for preventing carbon build-up in iron and the intrusion of $CO_2$ into the hydrogen product. At a reduction temperature of 823K, oxide reduction by $H_2$ was considerably faster than reduction by CO. If the length of the reduction step exceeds optimal value, low levels of methane gas appeared in the off-gas. Furthermore, with longer durations of the reduction step and CO levels in the reducing gas greater than 10 vol.%, carbidization of the iron and/or carbon deposition in the bed exhibited the increasing pressure drop over the bed, eventually rendering the reactor inoperable. Reduction using a reducing gas containing 10 vol.% CO and a optimal reduction duration gave constant $H_2$ flow rates and off-gas composition over 10 redox reaction cycles.
