In the present study, a porous concrete with alkali activated slag (AAS) and coal bottom ash was developed and the effect of carbonation on the physical property, microstructural characteristic, and heavy metal leaching behavior of the porous concrete were investigated. Independent variables, such as the type of the alkali activator and binder, the amount of paste, and $CO_2$ concentration, were considered. The experimental test results showed that the measured void ratio and compressive strength of the carbonated porous concrete exceeded minimum level stated in ACI 522 for general porous concrete. A new quantitative TG analysis for evaluating $CO_2$ uptake in AAS was proposed, and the result showed that the $CO_2$ uptake in AAS paste was approximately twice as high as that in OPC paste. The leached concentrations of heavy metals from carbonated porous concrete were below the relevant environmental criteria.

Carbonation is a deterioration which degrades structural and material performance by permitting CO2 and corrosion of embedded steel. Service life evaluation through deterministic method is conventional, however the researches with probabilistic approach on service life considering loading and cold joint effect on carbonation have been performed very limitedly. In this study, probabilistic service life evaluation was carried out through MCS (Monte Carlo Simulation) which adopted random variables such as cover depth, CO2 diffusion coefficient, exterior CO2 concentration, and internal carbonatable materials. Probabilistic service life was derived by changing mean value and COV (Coefficient of variation) from 100 % to 300 % and 0.1 ~ 0.2, respectively. From the analysis, maximum reduction ratio (47.7%) and minimum reduction ratio (11.4%) of service life were obtained in cover depth and diffusion coefficient, respectively. In the loading conditions of 30~60% for compressive and tensile stress, GGBFS concrete was effective to reduce cold joint effect on carbonation. In the tensile condition, service life decreased linearly regardless of material types. Additionally service life rapidly decreased due to micro crack propagation in the all cases when 60% loading was considered in compressive condition.

Reinforced concrete structures are exposed throughout their lifetime to the phenomenon of carbonation, which considerably influences their durability by causing corrosion of the reinforcements. The fight against this phenomenon is usually ensured by anti-carbonation coatings which have the possibility of limiting the permeability to carbon dioxide or with coatings which absorb the CO2 present in the air. A coating with good crack-bridging (sealing) capacity will prevent water from entering through existing cracks in concrete. Despite the beneficial effect of these coatings, their durability decreases considerably over time with temperature and humidity. In order to use coatings made from local materials, not presenting any danger, available in abundance in our country, very economical and easy to operate is the main objective of this work. This paper aim is to contribute to the formulation of a corrected dune sand-based mortar as an anti-carbonation coating for concrete. The results obtained show that the cement mortar based on dune sand formulated has a very satisfactory compressive strength, a very low water porosity compared to ordinary cement mortar and that this mortar allows an improvement in the protection of the concrete against the carbonation of 60% compared to ordinary cement mortar based on alluvial sand. Moreover, the formulated cement mortars based on dune sand have good adhesion to the concrete support, their adhesion strengths are greater than 1.5MPa recommended by the standards.
In order to develop the carbonation process as a core technology of zero emission coal power plant, study on characterization of methane steam reforming (MSR) which is main reaction of this process was carried out. The effects of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), steam/carbon (S/C) ratio and pressure in the MSR using reforming catalyst were investigated. The equilibrium composition of the gases produced in the MSR were obtained below GHSV 7,000 hr$\^$-1/. The operating conditions of carbonation process using hybrid reaction (MSR+CO$_2$ adsorption using CaO) were 700∼800$^{\circ}C$ and S/C ratio of 2.5∼3. The equilibrium mixture of gases composed of 75∼78% H$_2$ and 8∼9% CO$_2$ at atmospheric pressure and 60∼78% H$_2$ and 9∼l1% CO$_2$ at 1∼30 atm respectively under above operating conditions.

This study was conducted to recycle fly ash containing an abundance of CaO generated from combustion in a circulating layer as a carbon storage medium. The study utilized XRD, TG-DTA and XRF analyses during the hydration of fly ash and identified calcium substances within fly ash that could be used in a carbonation process. $Ca^{2+}$ ions in the calcium substances were easily converted to hydrates. A carbonation experiment was done, which used the method of $CO_2$ gas injection to produce suspensions by mixing fly ash with distilled water. The results were analyzed using TG-DTA, XRD, and pH meter measurements. The study was able to verify that the reaction was completed at a $CO_2$ flow rate of 300cc/min approximately 30 minutes after an injection into a solution with a solid-liquid ratio of 1 : 10 of fly ash and distilled water. Moreover, the stirring time of the suspensions did not influence the reaction, and the reaction time was found to diminish as the portion of the fly ash became smaller. Thus, this study produced carbon storage fly ash having a $CO_2$ storage rate of about 71% through the utilization of the CaO content contained within fly ash.

This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of carbonation for latex modified concrete with fly ash and blast furnace slag. The experimental variables consisted of ground granulated blast-furnace slag contents (0%, 30%, 50%), fly ash contents (0, 30%) latex contents (0, 5, 10, 15%). Two different methods of carbonation test such as $CO_2$ gas and 5% sulphuric acid digestion resistance test were varied in this study.

In order to investigate the re-carbonation behaviors of limestones in an oxy-circulating fluidized bed combustor (Oxy-CFBC), the re-carbonation characteristics of domestic 4 different limestone samples were analyzed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA-N1000) with the higher concentration of $CO_2$. Effect of reaction temperature ($600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) and $CaCO_3$ content (77~95%) of limestones were determined and the mass change of the CaO was observed. Under the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$, the conversion rate increased with increasing reaction temperature. However, the conversion rate decreased with increasing reaction temperature over $800^{\circ}C$. In the case of $CaCO_3$ content, the conversion was remarkably different at $870^{\circ}C$. In addition, reaction rate equations for simulating the re-carbonation of limestone by using gas solid reaction models were proposed in this study.

Economic evaluation of the manufacturing technology of high-value chemicals through the carbonation reaction of carbon dioxide contained in the flue gas was performed, and analysis of the IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and whole profit along the production plan of the final product was conducted. Through a carbonation reaction with sodium hydroxide that is generated from electrolysis and by using carbon dioxide in the combustion gas that is generated in the power plant, it is possible to get a high value products such as sodium bicarbonate compound and also to reduce the carbon dioxide emission simultaneously. The IRR (Internal Rate of Return) and NPV (Net Present Value) methods were used for the economic evaluation of the process which could handle carbon dioxide of 100 tons per day in the period of the 20 years of plant operation. The results of economic evaluation showed that the IRR of baseline case of technology was 67.2% and the profit that obtained during the whole operation period (20 years) was 346,922 million won based on NPV value. When considering ETS due to the emissions trading enforcement that will be activated in 2015, the NPV was improved to a 6,000 million won. Based on this results, it could be concluded that this $CO_2$ carbonation technology is an cost-effective technology option for the reduction of greenhouse gas.

Recently, there have been many studies about recycling cementitious powder from concrete waste(hereinafter referred to as waste powder), generated after recycle aggregate production. Previous studies showed that when the heating process of waste powder at $700^{\circ}C,\;Ca(OH)_2$ in paste is dehydrated making possible the restoration of hydraulic properties. Recycled cement with hydraulic properties restored is thought to be re-hydrated through the mechanism of hydration, which is almost similar in Portland cement. This clearly suggests that the hydrate of recycled cement is alkali in type. Like in general concrete, if recycled cement is used as a structural material, resistance performance against carbonation or neutralization by $CaCO_3$ in air probably would be most influential to the life of steel-reinforced concrete structure. Thus the purpose of this study is to make an experimental review on chemical properties of recycled cement, manufactured with concrete waste as base material, and investigate the durability of concrete using recycled cement through evaluating the cement s performance of resistance to carbonation in accordance with its accelerating age. Based on its results, further, the study seeks to provide basic information about ways of utilizing recycled cement.
