  • A new transmit antenna selection and shuffling($AS^2$) method for spatially correlated double space time transmit diversity(DSTTD) systems is proposed. The proposed method allows dumb antennas and the superposition of multiple signals at the same transmit antenna, whereas the conventional methods consider the antenna shuffling(AS) only. According to the simulation result, the proposed method provides a 1.8 dB signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) gain over the conventional methods for spatially correlated transmit antennas. Although the number of candidates for $AS^2$ is much higher than that of AS, it is found that the number of candidates for $AS^2$ can be reduced to 36 by using the characteristics and properties of preprocessing matrices, and among them, only 6 candidates are almost always chosen. Next, we empirically compare the bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the proposed method with the conventional spatial multiplexing(SM) technique with antenna selection. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the SM technique.

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance of the ARQ-aided downlink Time Switched Transmit Diversity (TSTD) in the WCDMA LCR-TDD system, when power ramping is applied. The proposed power ramping scheme ramps up the transmission power and then retransmits the data, when the receiver sends the response signal (ACK or NACK signal) to the transmitter and the response signal is NACK signal. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme yields about 0.7dB performance gain in terms of average Eb/N0, compared with the conventional ARQ-aided TSTD when a mobile speed is 3km/h and an frame error rate (FER) is 1%, respectively. In addition, 2.5% of throughput gain is shown when average Eb/N0 is equal to 0dB.

  • Visible Light Communication is one of the promising technologies for wireless communication due to the possibility to use existing LED lightening infrastructure to transmit data. LED has the ability to turn on and off very fast enough that our human eyes can't recognize so it can be used to transmit data via visible light along with illumination. But it faces flicker problem due to the brightness discrepancies between '1' and '0' bit patterns inside a data frame. Various run length limited (RLL) coding scheme like Manchester code, 4B6B, 8B10B or VPPM can be used to solve flickering problem. So we propose pseudo Manchester codding which can transmit data without modifying LED modulator and demodulator circuit as well as solve flickering problem.

  • It is required to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system or a multicarrier system. And it is needed to eliminate the transmission of the side information in the Partial Transmit Sequences. So, in this paper, a new technique is proposed, where the subcarriers used for the multiple signal representation are only utilized for the reduction of PAPR to eliminate the burden of transmitting the side information. That is, it is proposed by taking the modified minimization criteria of partial transmit sequences scheme instead of using the convex optimization or the fast algorithm of tone reservation(TR) technique As the result of simulation, the PAPR reduction capability of the proposed method is improved by 3.2 dB dB, 3.4 dB, 3.6 dB with M=2, 4, 8(M is the number of partition in the so-called partial transmit reduction sequences(PTRS)), when the iteration number of fast algorithm of TR is 10 and the data rate loss is 5 %. But it is degraded in the capability of PAPR reduction by 3.4 dB, 3.1 dB, 2.2 dB, comparing to the TR when the data rate loss is 20 %. Therefore, the proposed method is outperformed the TR technique with respect to the complexity and PAPR reduction capability when M=2.

  • In this paper, the design and fabrication of a transmit/receive(T/R) module for Ka-band phased array radar is presented. A 5bit digital phase shifter and digital attenuator were used in common for both transmitter and receiver considering unique Ka-band characteristic. The circulator was excluded in the T/R module and was placed outside T/R module. The transmitting power per element antenna is designed to be about 1 W and the noise figure is designed to be below 8 dB. The designed T/R module RF part has a compact size of $5\;mm{\times}4\;mm{\times}57\;mm$. In order to implement the T/R module, MMICs used in T/R module was separately assessed before assembly of the designed T/R module. The transmitter of the fabricated T/R module shows about 1 W at 5 dBm unit module input power and the receiver shows a gain of about 20 dB and a noise figure of below 8 dB as expected in the design stage.

  • In this paper, the transmit-receive module for military seekers has been designed and fabricated in 35 GHz. To increase the performance of substrates and high integration of circuits in millimeter-wave band, a 4-layer LCP(Liquid Crystal Polymer) substrate was developed. This substrate was implemented with three FCCL substrates and two adhesive layers, and a process using the difference in melting point between the substrates was used for lamination. Using a strip line and a microstrip line was confirmed by the transmission loss along the length of the substrate, and the performance of LCP substrates was validated with a power divider in 35 GHz. After confirming the performance of individual blocks such as power amplifier and low noise amplifier, a single channel Ka-band transmission/reception module was developed using a 4-layer liquid crystal polymer substrate. The transmit power of this module has above 1.1W in pulse duty 10% and has an output power of 1.1W and it has receive noise figure less than 8.5 dB and receive gain more than 17.6 dB.

  • Closed-loop transmit diversity is considered an important technique for improving the link budget in the third generation and future wireless communication standards. This paper proposes several transmit diversity algorithms suitable for small wireless terminals and presents performance assessment in terms of average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and outage improvement, convergence, and complexity of operations. The algorithms presented herein are verified using data from measured indoor channels with variable antenna spacing and the results explained using measured radiation patterns for a two-element array. It is shown that for a two-element array, the best among the proposed techniques provides SNR improvement of about 3 dB in a tightly spaced array (inter-element spacing of 0.1 wavelength at 2 GHz) typical of small wireless devices. Additionally, these techniques are shown to perform significantly better than a single antenna device in an indoor channel considering realistic values of latency and propagation errors.

  • In a conventional opportunistic transmit (COT) cooperative relaying system, only the relays that receive signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from the source and that exceed the threshold transmit to the destination. The COT system, however, only considers the SNR of the source-relay (S-R) path regardless that the SNR of the relay-destination (R-D) path is the opportunistic transmission condition. For that reason, it is not guaranteed that all the transmitted signals from relays exceed the threshold at the destination. Therefore we propose a double opportunistic transmit (DOT) cooperative relaying system - when both of the received SNR from a source and from a destination exceed the threshold, the relay transmits to the destination. It is shown that the proposed DOT system reduces power consumption by 6.9, 20.9, 32.4, and 41.4 % for K =3, 5, 7, and 9, respectively under the given condition of $P_{out}=1{\times}10^{-3}$ and $\overline{\gamma}_{SR}/\Gamma_{SR}$=30 dB, compared to the COT system. We noticed that the performance of the DOT system is superior to that of the COT system for the identical number of active transmit relays under the same condition of the normalized average SNR of $\overline{\gamma}_{RD}/\Gamma_{RD}$.

  • An adaptive sub-optimal method using a preset threshold for combining partial transmit sequence (PTS) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is presented. The results show that adaptive sub-optimal method reduces the 0.1% PAP by 3.4dB, while iterative flipping method reduces it by 3dB and PTS reduce it by 4.1dB. The complexity of adaptive sub-optimal method is 2.4% of that of PTS method for M=8.

  • In this paper, we propose two efficient symbol detection algorithms for space-frequency OFDM (SF-OFDM) transmit diversity scheme. When the number of sub-carriers in SF-OFBM scheme is small, the interference between adjacent sub-carriers may be generated. The proposed algorithms eliminate this interference in a parallel or sequential manlier and achieve a considerable performance improvement over the conventional detection algorithm. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed detection algorithms is evaluated by the simulation. In the case of 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas, at $BER=10^{-4}$ the proposed algorithms achieve the gain improvement of about 3 dB. The symbol detectors with the proposed algorithms are designed in a hardware description language and synthesized to gate-level circuits with the $0.18{\mu}m$ 1.8V CMOS standard cell library. With the division-free architecture, the proposed SF-OFDM-PIC and SF-OFDM-SIC symbol detectors can be implemented using 140k and 129k logic gates, respectively.
