액상소결에 의한 $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ 복합체의 제조와 특성 (Manufacture of $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ Composites Densified by Liquid-Phase Sintering)

  • The effect of $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives on fracture toughness of $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ composites by hot-pressed sintering were investigated. The f$\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-presse sintered and annealed by adding 16, 20, 24wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at low temperature($1800^{\circ}C$) for 4h. In this microstructures, the relative density is over 95.88% of the theoretical density and the porosity increased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation. The fracture toughness showed the highest of $5.88MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 20wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest of $5.22{\times}10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm$ for composite added with 20wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives at room temperature and is all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

상압소결 $Al_2O_3-SiC$계 소결체의 기계적 성질 (I) : SiC분말의 분산효과 (Mechanical Properties of the Pressureless Sintered $Al_2O_3-SiC$ Composite(1) : Dispersion Effects of SiC Powder)

  • $Al_2O_3$ 기지에 미치는 2차상의 영향을 알아보기 위하여 SiC 입자를 5~20vol.% 분산시키고 소결조제로서 $TiO_2$ 또는 RY_2O_3$를 2.5wt.%첨가하여 180$0^{\circ}C$, $N_2$분위기 중에서 90분간 상압소결 하였다. SiC함량이 증가함에 따라 소결체의 밀도는 감소하였지만 기계적 물성은 증가하여 $Y_2O_3$를 소결조제로 첨가한 경우, 꺾임강도는 525MPa, 경도는 17.1GPa,파괴인성은 4.1 MPa.$m^{1/2}$ 정도의 최고값을 나타내었고 반면 $TiO_2$를 소결조제로 첨가한 경우 꺾임강도 285MPa , 경도 12.1GPa 정도의 값을 나타냈다. 그리고 이와 같은 기계적 물성의 증진은 주로 SiC의 복합화에 따른 균열의 편향과 $Al_2O_3$ 의 입자성장억제효과에 의한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

  • The ${\beta}-SiC+TiB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density is over 78.83% of the theoretical density and increased with increasing sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 140 MPa for composites sintered at $1900^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 4.07 GPa at $1900^{\circ}C$. Owing to YAG, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 4.07 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites at $1900^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).

  • The composites were fabricated 61[vol.%] ${\beta}$-SiC and 39[vol.%] $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid by pressure or pressureless annealing at 1,650[$^{\circ}C$] for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. Phase analysis of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$. The relative density, the flexural strength and the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 88.32[%], 136.43[MPa] and 52.82[GPa] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 0.0162[${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$] for pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite at 25[$^{\circ}C$]. The electrical resistivity of the pressure annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composite was positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) but the electrical resistivity of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ composites was negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 700[$^{\circ}C$].

  • The composites were fabricated $\beta$-SiC and $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 8, 12, 16[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid by pressureless annealing at $1,650[^{\circ}C]$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$ were not observed in the microstructure and the phase analysis of the pressureless annealed SiC-$TiB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites. The relative density, the flexural strength, the Young's modulus and the Vicker's hardness showed the highest value of 82.29[%], 189.5[MPa], 54.60 [GPa] and 2.84[GPa] for SiC-$TiB_2$ composites added with 16[wt%] $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The relative density of SiC-$TiB_2$ composites was lowered due to gaseous products of the result of reaction between SiC and $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 0.012[${\Omega}{\cdot}cm$] for 16[wt%] at 25[$^{\circ}C$]. The electrical resistivity was all negative temperature coefficient resistance (NTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 700[$^{\circ}C$].

  • Multilayer NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti were sputter-coated on the alumina substrate, starting with a 0.7 ㎛ thick NbCxC1-x layer grown on substrate, followed by 0.7 ㎛ thick Y2O3 layer and 1 ㎛ thick Ti layer. To find out the optimum conditions for thickness uniformity and adhesion, sputtering works have been done with the variation of sputtering power and Ar pressure. After vacuum annealing at 950℃ and 1000℃, the thermal stability of the NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti coated alumina substrates has been investigated by peel off test. The coating scheme didn't cause any debonded layer after an annealing at 950℃ for 3hrs. However, it was peeled off after annealing at 1000℃ for 3hr. It was found that the thermal stability of Al2O3/NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti coating scheme changed with the NbCxC1-x composition.

Preparation of Titanium Carbide Fiber-Reinforced Alumina Ceramic Matrix Composites by Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis

  • $Al_2O_3$-TiC composites were prepared from aluminum, titanium oxide, and carbon fibers by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis(SHS). After the SHS reaction, the TiC phase in the sample was found either fibrous or non-fibrous shape. The fraction of the fibrous TiC phase varied with the amount of $Al_2O_3$ diluent addition. The optimum amount of diluent to make fibrous carbide was determined to be 30%. The fibers were hollow inside and made of multiple grains with a composition of titanium carbide. The hollow fiber formation mechanism was suggested and discussed. The synthesized powders were consolidated to dense composites by hot pressing at $1750^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa.

스파크 플라즈마 소결에 의한 액상소결 SiC-30 wt% TiC 복합체 (Liquid Phase Sintered SiC-30 wt% TiC Composites by Spark Plasma Sintering)

  • 10 wt% A1$_2$O$_3$-Y$_2$O$_3$-CaO를 첨가한 SiC-30 wt% TiC 분말을 스파크 플라즈마 소결(SPS) 방법을 사용하여 급속 치밀화 하였다. SPS 공정은 매우 빠른 승온 속도와 짧은 시간에 완전 치밀한 시편을 얻을 수 있다. 본 실험에서, 승온 속도와 압력은 $100^{\circ}C$/min과 40MPa이고, 소결 온도 범위는$1600^{\circ}C$~$1800^{\circ}C$이었으며, 10min 동한 유지하였다. $Al_2$O$_3$, $Y_2$O$_3$ 및 CaO를 첨가한 SiC-30 wt% TiC 복합체는 $1700^{\circ}C$ 이상 온도에서 스파크 플라즈마 소결 방법으로 완전 치밀화가 이루어졌다. 모든 SPS 공정 온도에서 탄화큐소으 상전이나 YAG 결정상의 형성 없이 3C-SiC와 TiC 만이 XRD에서 나타났다. 급속 소결한 SiC-30 wt% TiC 복합체의 미세구조는 비교적 작은 등축상 SiC 결정립과 비교적 큰 TiC 결정립으로 구성되었다. $1750^{\circ}C$에서 제조한 시편의 이축강도능 635.2MPa이고, 파괴인성은 6.12 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$이었다.

Annealing 온도 변화에 따른 $\beta-SiC-TiB_2$ 도전성 세라믹 복합체의 특성 연구 (A study on the properties of the Electrocondutive Ceramic $SiC-TiB_2$ Composites according to Annealing Temperature.)

  • The composites were fabricated 61vol.% $\beta-SiC$ and 39vol.% $TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of l2wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by pressureless annealing at $1700^{\circ}C,\;1750^{\circ}C,\;1800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours respectively. The result of Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC$(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density and the Young's modulus showed the highest value of 92.9701% and 92.884Gpa for composites by pressureless annealing temperature $1700^{\circ}C$ at room temperature.

  • Aluminum alloys are being employed in automobile parts as strive to reduce overall vehicle weight to meet demands for improved fuel economy and reduction in vehicle emissions. Al-based composites reinforced with ceramic ($Al_2O_3,\;SiC,\;TiC\;and\;B_4C$) applications in a variety of components in automotive engines, such as liners, where the tribological properties of the material are important. In this study, Al-base composites reinforced with TiC particle powders has been developed for producing plasma spray coatings. The composite plasma spray powders were prepared Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with TiC(40, 60 and 80wt%) particles ($0.2~5{\mu}textrm{m}$) by drum type ball milling. The composite powders ($36~76{\mu}textrm{m}$) were sprayed with plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to decrease with increasing TiC content and improved with heat treatment. AlSiMg-40% TiC heat-treated coatings were showed the best wear resistance in this study.
