Dielectric Properties of Amorphous and Composite Alkoxi-derived Alumina Thin Films

  • The development of new improved type of dielectric materials on the conception of multiphase structure has been carried out in this paper. Metal alkoxides solutions were used for application of thin film by electrophoretic deposition technique. We succeeded in preparation of amorphous and composite dielectric films from Al alkoxides. Specific features of the preparation technique were considered. Microstructure of the films was examined as well as their dielectric properties. TEM analyses reveals that films deposited from aging sols and heat-treated at temperatures as low as $400^{\circ}C$ contain small whiskers of ${\delta}-Al_2O_3$.

  • 나노입자에 의한 세라믹 코팅은 제품의 방청, 내식, 내마모성을 향상시킬 뿐만 아니라 내열성을 향상시키는 데에도 효과적인 성능을 보이고 있다. 특히 지르코니아(YSZ), 산화알루미늄($Al_2O_3$), 이산화 타이타늄($TiO_2$) 등과 같이 차열 성능이 우수한 세라믹 계열을 이용한 TBC(Thermal Barrier Coating)은 이미 항공기 엔진부품이나 고성능 베어링과 같이 고온에서도 우수한 성능을 유지해야 하는 기계부품에 보편적으로 사용되어 오고 있는 방법이다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 차열서능이 우수한 세라믹 소재를 이용해 건축물에 많이 사용되고 있는 목재에 난연성능의 향상을 목적으로 세라믹 나노코팅을 하였을 때 목재의 연소특성이 어떻게 변화하는가를 관찰 및 분석하였다.

Effects of Drying Agents on the Drying and Calcination in Synthesis of Mullite by Sol-Gel Process (졸-겔법에 의한 mullite합성시 건조 첨가제가 건조 및 소성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of DCCA (Drying Control Chemical Additives) on the drying of gel was investigated in order to determine an optimum drying condition of mullite precursor through sol-gel process. Aluminium sec-butoxide was synthesized from aluminium foil and then mullite powders were synthesized from Tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) and the aluminium sec-butoxide. N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), Glycerol, 1, 4-Dioxane, and Oxalic acid were used as DCCA. Mullite powders that were calcined at 200, 900, 1100, and $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2hr were analysed by XRD, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and SEM in order to investigate structural change and characteristics of calcined powders. The results of this work showed that the drying time of gel was reduced to about half in the presence of 0.1mol DMF compared with the absence of DCCA and also calcined powders were obtained without remarkable structural change despite of the addition of DCCA.

The Low-field Tunnel-type Magnetoresistance Characteristics of Thin Films Deposited on Different Substrate (기판 효과에 따른 저 자장 영역에서의 자기저항 효과에 관한 연구)

  • The low-field tunnel-type magnetoresistance (MR) properties of sol-gel derived $La_{0.7}Pb_{0.3}MnO_3(LPMO)$ thin film deposited on different substrate have been investigated. Polycrystalline thin films were fabricated by spin-coating on $SiO_2/Si(100)$ substrate and that with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer, while c-axis-oriented thim film was grown on $LaAlO_3(001)$ (LAO) single crystal substrate. The full width half maximum (FWHM) of the rocking curve scan of LPMO/LAO film is $0.32^{\circ}$. Tunnel-type MR ratio is 0.52 % in $LPMO/SiO_2/Si$(100) film and that of $LPMO/YSZ/SiO_2/Si$(100) film is as high as 0.68 %, whereas that of LPMO/LAO(001) film is less than 0.4 % under the applied field of 500 Oe at 300 K. Well-pronounced MR hysteresis was registered with an MR peak in the vicinity of the coercive field. The low-field tunnel-type MR characteristics of thin films deposited on different substrates originates from the behavior of grain boundary properties.

Polarized Raman Scattering Study of Highly(111)-oriented PZT Films in the Rhombohedral-Phase Field

  • Highly (111)-oriented PZT [Pb(Zrl-xTix)O3] thin films in the Zr-rich rhombohedral phase-field were successfully fabricated on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by combining PLD method with sol-gel process. These highly (111)-oriented films can be used as model systems for polarized Raman scattering study of PZT in the rhombohedral-Phase field because the (111)-direction is the principal off-center axis of the rhombohedral ferroelectricity. For this purpose, we have fabricated PZT films employing two distinctive compositions : one with Zr/Ti = 90/10 (abbreviated as PZT90/10) and the other with Zr/Ti= 60/40 (PZT60/40). The PZT90/10 film belongs to the octahedrally distorted FR(LT) phase with a cell-doubled structure, whereas the PZT60/40 is in the high-temperature FR(HT) phase-field at room temperature. To clearly separate E(TO) phonon modes from Al(TO) modes of the (111)-oriented rhombohedral film, we have suitably devised Z(X,Y)Z and Z(X,X)Z backscattering geometries for E(TO) and Al (TO), respectively. The polarized scattering experiment demonstrated that both types of (111)-oriented rhombohedral films closely followed the Raman selection rule.

  • ATZ was prepared by adding an alumina sol equivalent to 2wt% as $Al_2O_3$ to an aqueous slurry of alumina (AKP-30) and zirconia (TZ-2Y or TZ-0Y) in the range of 10-30ATZ, followed by gelation, calcination, and sintereing between $1450^{\circ}C{\sim}1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. They showed excellent microstructure with alumina grains of <$0.5{\mu}m$ and>99% of the theoretical density. Fracture toughness of ${\sim}8MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ was observed around 20ATZ which was higher than $6MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ obtainable by ball-milling.

Friction and Wear Characteristics of Bonded Film Lubricants of Organically Modified Hybrid Ceramic Binder Materials (유기변성 하이브리드 세라믹 물질을 결합제로 이용한 고체피막윤활제의 마찰마모 특성)

  • In order to enhance the thermal stability of binder materials of bonded type solid lubricants, several metal-alkoxide based sol-gel materials such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMOS), titaniumisopropoxide (Ti(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$), zirconiumisopropoxide (Zr(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$) and aluminumbutoxide (Al(Obu$\^$t/)$_4$) were modified chemically by both epoxy and acrylic silane compounds. Friction and wear characteristics of the bonded solid lubricants, whose binders were of several hybrid ceramic materials, were tested with a reciprocating tribo-tester. Wear life was evaluated with respect to the heat-curing temperature, friction temperature, type of supplement lubricants, and ratio of binder materials. Test results showed that the Si-Zr hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a higher wear life compared to others. Sb$_2$O$_3$ was the most effective supplement lubricants in the high temperature, and BUS analyses revealed that it was caused mainly by a strong anti-oxidation effect to MoS$_2$ particles. The higher heat-curing temperature resulted in the higher wear life, and the higher friction temperature resulted in the lower wear life.

Preparation and Characterization of Screen-printed Lead Zirconate Titanate Thick Films

  • Ferroelectric PZT heterolayered thick films were fabricated by the alkoxide-based sol-gel method. PZT(Zr/Ti=60/40) paste was made and alternately screen-printed on the $Al_2O_3$ substrates. We have introduced a press-treatment to obtain a good densification of screen printed films. The porosity of the thick films was decreased with increasing the applied pressure and the thick films pressed at $0.6ton/cm^2$ showed the dense microstructure and thickness of about $76{\mu}m$. The relative dielectric constant increased with increasing the applied pressure. The remanent polarization and coercive field increased with increasing applied pressure and the values for the PZT thick films pressed at $0.6ton/cm^2$ were $16.6{\mu}C/cm^2$, 76.9 kV/cm, respectively.

Fabrication of Anorthite for Low-Firing Ceramic Substrate by PVA Steric-Entrapment Route (폴리머 고착공정을 통한 저온소성기판용 Anorthite의 제조)

  • A homogeneous and stable, amorphous-type, anorthite (CaO $Al_2$$O_3$ $2SiO_2$)powder was synthesized by an organic-inorganic steric entrapment route. Polyvinyl alcohol ( PVA) was used as an organic carrier for the precursor ceramic gel. The PVA content, its degree of polymerization and type of silica sol had a significant influence on the calcination and crystallization behavior of the precursors. For densifiction and crystallization at low temperature, porous and soft, amorphous-type anorthite powder was planetary milled for 20h. The milled powder crystallized to stable anorthite phase and densified to a relative density of 94% below $1000^{\circ}C$. In the development of crystalline phases of the planetary milled powder, omisteinbergite phase was unusually observed at $900^{\circ}C$, and then anorthite was observed at $950^{\circ}C$. The sintered anorthite had a thermal expansion coefficient of $4.6$\times$10^{-6}$ /$^{\circ}C$ and a dielectric constant of 7.5 at 1 MHz. Finally, the anorthite synthesized by the new process is expected to be an useful material for low-firing ceramic substrate.
