The optimum sol solution for making alumina membrane was synthesized by using sol-gel method with aluminium isopropoxide. Two types of supports were made from the $\alpha$-Al2O3 powder. The porosities of supports could be controlled by the forming methods and the heat treatment conditions. After the support was coated with optimum sol solution and heat-treated at 50$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hour, the thickness of crack-free membrane could be controlled reproductively with dipping time.
A faujasite NaY zeolite membrane was prepared on a tubular ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ support by the secondary growth process, and effects of permeation test conditions on the $CO_2/N_2$ separation were investigated. A NaY zeolite membrane with good $CO_2/N_2$ separation was successfully synthesized by using the hydrothermal solution ($Al_2O_3:SiO_2:Na_2O:H_2O$ = 1:6:14:840 in a molar base): at a permeation temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, its $CO_2$ permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor were $2.5{\times}10^{-7}mol/m^2secPa$ and 34, respectively. The $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations were highly dependent on permeation test conditions (feed composition, feeding rate, feed pressure, He sweeping rate and permeation temperature). The results indicated that (i) $CO_2$ and $N_2$ permeations through NaY zeolite membrane are governed by surface and micropore diffusions, respectively, (ii) the preparation of NaY zeolite membrane with a large permeating area is one of the most difficult hurdles for its real applications, and (iii) the retardation of $N_2$ permeation is an effective key to improve $CO_2/N_2$ separation factor in NaY zeolite membrane.
In this study, a ceramic membrane was prepared by CVD. Tube type alpha alumina support was used for substrate and added the Ga salt in intermediate layer. Synthesized method was counter diffusion CVD method at $650^{\circ}C$ with tetramethylorthosilane (TMOS). Gas permeation was measured at $600^{\circ}C$ using single-component $H_2$, $N_2$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$. During the steam treatment, $H_2/N_2$ permselectivity of non-Ga silica membrane was decreased 926 to 829 at $600^{\circ}C$. On the other hand $H_2/N_2$ permselectivity of added Ga silica membrane was stable 910 to 904 at $600^{\circ}C$. These results show that the metal-doped membranes improved steam stability for gas separation.
This study was carried out to find the optimum coagulation conditions for ceramic microfiltration process of Y water treatment plant. When pH of raw water from Y Dam was adjusted to 7, the efficiency of coagulation was the best and the optimun dosage of coagulant was 3 mg/L(as $Al_2O_3$) for turbidity of raw water less then 10 NTU in Jar test. In mini module test, the decay rate of specific flux was the lowest when PAC (poly Aluminum Chloride) was used among coagulants and pH was adjusted to 7. The decay rate of specific flux for raw water turbidity of 10~30 NTU was greatly decreased with increase of dosage of coagulant (PAC) while the rate was not significantly decreased for turbidity more than 50 NTU. In conclusion, the optimum dosage of PAC (11% as $Al_2O_3$) was 30 and 50 mg/L for raw water turbidity of less than 10 NTU and more than 50 NTU, respectively. The dosage of PAC should be increased linearly 30 to 50 mg/L depending on raw water turbidity of 10 to 50 NTU.
Porous glasses were prepared from $TiO_2$ containing borosilicate glass by the phase separation. Pore distribution and surface area of porous glasses were invesigated by SEM and porosimeter. As temperature and heating time increase. The pore size and volume increased, but the specific surface area decreased above the critical temperature. The specific surface area and pore size showed more sensitive change on the variation of heating temperature than of heating time.

Performance of pyrophyllite-based ceramic membranes newly developed were investigated. Membrane fouling caused by microbial suspensions taken from a full-scaled MBR system at domestic wastewater treatment plant was observed at different airflow rate and distance between each membrane. For the pyrophyllite support, pore size was about $1.0{\mu}m$, but surface coating with $Al_2O_3$ solution decreased the pore size with the reduction of the pure water permeability. With the MLSS taken from the full-scaled MBR system (6 g/L), the fouling rate was decreased by increasing airflow rate under $20L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ of setpoint flux. However, the effectiveness of the airflow rate on the fouling control depends strongly upon the gap between each membrane. At fixed airflow rate, the fouling rate was decreased by increasing the gap between each pyrophyllite membrane. Nevertheless, further increasing the membrane distance from 3.5 to 5.4 cm resulted in higher fouling rate. Similar result was observed with the $Al_2O_3$ coated-pyrophyllite membrane. Nevertheless, the fouling rate was lower with the coated membrane than that observed with the uncoated pyrophyllite support. Regardless of surface coating, the suspended solids were removed almost completely and the surface coating on the pyrophyllite support improved organic rejection with PEG solution (MW : 8000 kDa) tested.
In this paper, polymer composite membranes and ceramic composite membranes were prepared in order to compare differences in pervaporation performances relative to the support layers. PVDF was used for the polymer support layers, and $a-Al_2O_3$ was used for the ceramic support layers. For active layer was coated for PDMS, which is a rubbery polymer. The characterization of membranes were analysed by SEM, contact angle, and XPS. We studied performances relative to the composite membrane support layers in the ABE mixture solutions. The results of the pervaporation, the flux of the ceramic composite membrane was shown to be $250.87g/m^2h$, which was higher than that of polymer composite membranes, at $195.64g/m^2h$. However, it was determined that the separation factor of the polymer composite membranes was 31.98 which were higher than that of the ceramic composite membranes, at 20.66.
Ceramic membranes of the supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ were prepared by dip-coating method on an $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ porous substrate. The mean pore diameter of an alumina support was 0.125 um. The mean particle diameter of $TiO_2-CeO_2$ top layer varied with firing temperature and ranged from 20 to 85 nm. The thermal stability of the composite membranes was studied from their surface microstructure after calcination at $600-900^{\circ}C$. The supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ composite membranes exhibited much higher heat resistance than the $TiO_2$ membrane.
A highly performed Pd-based hydrogen membrane has prepared successfully on a modified porous nickel support. The porous nickel support modified by impregnation method of $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ (Aldrich Co.) over the nickel powder showed a strong resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and thermal stability. Plasma surface modification treatment was introduced as a pre-treatment process instead of conventional HCl wet activation. Ceramic barrier was coated on the external surface of the prepared nickel supports to prevent intermetallic diffusion and to enhance the affinity between the support and membrane. Palladium and copper were deposited at thicknesses of $4\mu}m$ and $0.5{\mu}m$, respectively, on a barrier-coated support by DC sputtering process. The permeation measurement was performed in pure hydrogen at $400^{\circ}C$. The single gas permeation of our membrane was two times higher than that of the previous membrane which do not have ceramic barrier.
Tow types of supports were made using $\alpha$-Al2O3 powder and optimum conditions to prepare for supports were provided. Sol solution for coating was synthesized by sol-gel method with aluminum isopropoxide. Supports were coated and heat-treatemented, where the thickness of coating layer was controlled by dipping time. Flux and permeability of alumina membrane were measured by liquid and gas filtration apparatus and these were compared with the provided model. It was confirmed that the coating was done very well without micro~crack and defect.
