  • In this study, $^{99m}Tc$, $^{123}I$, $^{201}Tl$, $^{18}F$, and $^{131}I$, which are widely used in nuclear medicine, were transmitted through a bismuth shield. We investigated the shielding rates according to the type of radioisotope and the distance of measurement. For the experiment, 6 sheets of lead equivalent 0.25 mm Pb of bismuth shielding material were stacked one by one up to 1.50 mm as the thickness increased. The distance was 30 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm, and the transmission dose was measured. As a result, the shielding rates was measured as the thickness increased, and the measured value decreased as the distance increased. The shielding rate of $^{123}I$ and $^{201}Tl$ was higher than $^{99m}Tc$, $^{18}F$ and $^{131}I$ showed lower shielding effect when there is a shielding material than when there is no shielding material due to high energy and ${\beta}$ rays. Based on the results of experiments, it would be helpful to reduce the exposure of nuclear medicine workers and to manage the exposure if bismuth shields are used depending on the type of radioisotope.

  • When air discharged from a radioisotope production facility is contaminated with radiation, the public may be exposed to radiation. The objective of this study is to manage such radiation exposure. We measured the airborne radioactivity concentration at a 30 MeV cyclotron radioisotope production facility to assess whether the exhaust gas was contaminated. Additionally, we investigted the radioactive contamination of the air filter for efficient air purification and radiation safety control. To measure the airborne radiation concentration, specimens were collected weekly for 4 h after the beginning of the radioisotope production. Regarding the air purifier, five specimens were collected at different positions of each filter-pre-filter, high-efficiency particulate air filter, and charcoal filter-installed in the cyclotron production room. The concentrations of F-18, I-123, I-131, and Tl-201 generated in the radioiodine production room were $13.5Bq/m^3$, $27.0Bq/m^3$, $0.10Bq/m^3$, and $11.5Bq/m^3$, respectively; the concentrations of F-18, I-123, and I-131 produced in the radioisotope production room were $0.05Bq/m^3$, $16.1Bq/m^3$, and $0.45Bq/m^3$, correspondingly; and those of F-18, I-123, I-131, and Tl-201 generated in the accelerator room were $2.07Bq/m^3$, $53.0Bq/m^3$, $0.37Bq/m^3$, and $0.15Bq/m^3$, respectively. The maximum radiation concentration of I-123 generated in the radioiodine production room was 1,820 Bq/g, which can be disposed after 2 days. The maximum radiation concentration of Tl-202 generated in the radioisotope production room was 205 Bq/g, and this isotope must be stored for 53 days. The I-123 generated in the radioiodine production room had a maximum concentration of 1,530 Bq/g and must be stored for 2 days. The maximum radiation concentration of Na-22 generated in the radioisotope production room was 0.18 Bq/g and this isotope must be disposed after 827 days. To manage the exhaust, the efficiency of air purification must be enhanced by selecting an air purifier with a long life and determining the appropriate replacement time by examining the differential pressure through systematic measurements of the airborne radiation contamination level.

  • 742 cases of thyroid diseases treated at Radio-isotope Clinic, Seoul National University Hospital since October 1965 through July 1968 were analyzed. The patients were classified according to eye findings, as to Infiltrative, Non-infiltrative and No ophthalmopathy. Correlations between ophthalmological findings and symptoms, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate as well as response to medical treatment were carefully reviewed. Results obtained were as follows: 1. Among goitrous patients 44.5% with infiltrative ophthalmopathy, 24.1% with non-infiltrative ophthalmopathy totaling 68.6% of patients with one or more eye findings were found. Exophthalmos (44%) and visual disturbances (44%) comprised the highest incidence among eye signs. Most frequent eye symptoms were lid swelling (17.1%). 2. Female patients were predominant(91%). 3. Of cases with hyperthyroidism, after treatment with antithyroid drugs and radio-iodine therapy, general symptoms were improved in over 74%, whereas ophthalmopathy was not changed and in some cases the eye signs were aggravated. This tendency was more apparent in infiltrative ophthalmopathy. 4. Significant correlations between exophthalmos, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate were found. Among the patients of same degree of exophthalmos, BMR values and $^{131}I$ uptake rate showed the highest in non-infiltrative ophthalmopathy, moderate in infiltrative ophthalmopathy and the lowest in no ophthalmopathy.
