  • In 1.55.mu.m DFB lasers with two non-AR mirrors, I have analyzed the effect of the sturctures of indes and/or gain gratings and mirror positions on the threshold gains, the lasing frequencies, and the beam profiles in longitudinal direction of lasers. I have obtained the optimum condition of static characteristics that ${\Delta}{\Omega}$(the phase difference betweeen index grating and gain grating is 3${\pi}$/4, $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=4~6 in case of $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=0.9 and $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=3~5 in case of $({\kappa}L)_{i}$=0.7. The modal selectivity and intensity uniformity of this optimum condition are 2~2.5 times better than those of the gain-coupled DFB lasers ${\Delta}{\Omega}$=0). The gain-coupled DFB lasers${\Delta}{\Omega}$=0) have 10$^{10) times better modal selectivity and intensity uniformity than the loss-coupled DFB lasers(TEX>${\Delta}{\Omega}$=${\pi}$).

  • In this paper, our main purpose is to establish the existence of weak solutions of a weak solutions of a class of p-q-Laplacian system involving concave-convex nonlinearities: $$\{\array{-{\Delta}_pu-{\Delta}_qu={\lambda}V(x)|u|^{r-2}u+\frac{2{\alpha}}{\alpha+\beta}|u|^{\alpha-2}u|v|^{\beta},\;x{\in}{\Omega}\\-{\Delta}p^v-{\Delta}q^v={\theta}V(x)|v|^{r-2}v+\frac{2\beta}{\alpha+\beta}|u|^{\alpha}|v|^{\beta-2}v,\;x{\in}{\Omega}\\u=v=0,\;x{\in}{\partial}{\Omega}}$$ where ${\Omega}$ is a bounded domain in $R^N$, ${\lambda}$, ${\theta}$ > 0, and 1 < ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, ${\alpha}+{\beta}=p^*=\frac{N_p}{N_{-p}}$ is the critical Sobolev exponent, ${\Delta}_su=div(|{\nabla}u|^{s-2}{\nabla}u)$ is the s-Laplacian of u. when 1 < r < q < p < N, we prove that there exist infinitely many weak solutions. We also obtain some results for the case 1 < q < p < r < $p^*$. The existence results of solutions are obtained by variational methods.

  • Transparent and conducting tin oxide thin films were prepared on soda lime silicate glass by thermal chemical vapour deposition. Thin films were fabricated from mixtures of tetramethyltin (TMT) as a precursor, oxygen or oxygen containing ozone as an oxidant. The properties of fabricated tin oxide films are highly changed with variations of substrate temperature. Optimized thin films could be prepared on TMT, which flow rate of 8 sccm, oxygen flow rate of 150 sccm and substrate temperature of 38$0^{\circ}C$. We reduced deposition temperature about$ 180^{\circ}C$ by using of oxygen containing ozone instead of pure oxygen and resistivity of thin films was decreased from ~ ${\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}cm$ to ~${\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$.

  • Microbial rhodopsins are a superfamily of photoactive membrane proteins with the covalently bound retinal cofactor. Isomerization of the retinal chromophore upon absorption of a photon triggers conformational changes of the protein to function as ion pumps or sensors. After the discovery of proteorhodopsin in an uncultivated γ-proteobacterium, light-activated proton pumps have been widely detected among marine bacteria and, together with chlorophyll-based photosynthesis, are considered as an important axis responsible for primary production in the biosphere. Rhodopsins and related proteins show a high level of phylogenetic diversity; we focus on a specific class of bacterial rhodopsins containing the '3 omega motif.' This motif forms a stack of three non-consecutive aromatic amino acids that correlates with the B-C loop orientation and is shared among the phylogenetically close ion pumps such as the NDQ motif-containing sodium-pumping rhodopsin, the NTQ motif-containing chloride-pumping rhodopsin, and some proton-pumping rhodopsins including xanthorhodopsin. Here, we reviewed the recent research progress on these 'omega rhodopsins,' and speculated on their evolutionary origin of functional diversity.

  • In this study, a computer program considering shape imperfections of arch under dynamic loading was developed. The shape imperfection of arch was assumed as higher degree polynomial expressed as $\omega$$_{i}$ = $\omega$$_{o}$ (1-(2$\chi$/L)$^{m}$ )$^n$and sinusoidal curve such as $\omega$$_{i}$ = $\omega$$_{o}$ sin(η$\pi$$\chi$/L). In finite element formulation, the material nonlinear behavior was assumed the elasto-viscoplastic model highly corresponding to the real behavior of the material and the geometrically nonlinear behavior was modeled using Lagrangian description of motion. Also, the behavior of steel was modeled by applying yield criteria of Von Mises. The developed program was applied to the analysis of the dynamic behavior for the clamped beam subjected to the concentrated load at midspan and the results were compared with those from other research to investigate accuracy of the presented finite element program. In numerical examples, the shape imperfections of L/500, L/1,000 and L/2,000 were considered and the modes of shape imperfections of the symmetric and antisymmetric were adopted. The effects of the shape imperfections on the dynamic behavior of arch were conspicuous and results of analysis indicate that the reasonable values of arch rise to arch span ratio ranged between 0.1 and 0.3.

  • The potentiometric measurement result for a high resistance up to $100P{\Omega}$ using a low resistance, a low voltage source and a commercial digital multimeter(DMM) is presented. With the method, a resistance can be easily, fast and economically measured. Using the method, resistance ranges over the $10G{\Omega}$ range which is difficult to measure using a commercial DMM and resistance ranges between $100T{\Omega}$ and $100P{\Omega}$ which cannot measure using an insulation tester were measured within accuracy of a few percent. It is expected that it can be useful to determine the temperature and voltage effect of a high resistance and an insulation material because it uses a reference resistance with a low resistance, very low temperature and voltage effect. Besides, it is expected that it can be useful to calibrate a dc high voltage divider with a large resistance ratio and a very low resistance because arbitrary resistance ratio measurements are possible with it.

  • In this study, a disk-type piezoelectric transformer was fabricated. Its diameter was 50[mm] and thickness was 4.5[mm]. The driving and generating electrode with their gap of 1[mm] were fabricated on the top surface. But the common electrode was fabricated on the whole bottom surface. The electrode surface ratio of driving and generating part on the top surface was the range of 1.4:1 to 3:1. We investigated the electrical characteristics with the variation of its thickness and the electrode surface ratio of driving and generating part in the range of load resistance of 100${[\Omega]}\~70{[k\Omega]}$.. Form the experimental results, their influence on the set-up voltage ratio were investigated quantitively and qualitatively.

  • We fabricate thermally stable and low resistance Ru ohmic contacts to $n-ZnO:Al(3\times10^{18}\textrm{cm}^{-3})$, grown by specially designed dual target sputtering system. It is shown that the as-deposited Ru contact produces a specific contact resistance of $2.1{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}\textrm{cm}^2$. Annealing of the Ru contacts leads to the improvement of current-voltage characteristics. For example, annealing of the contact at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 min produces a contact resistance of $3.2{\times}10^{-5}}{\Omega}\textrm{cm}^2$. furthermore, the metallisation scheme is found to be thermally stable: the surface of the contact is fairly smooth with a rms roughness of 1.4 nm upon annealing at $700^{\circ}C$. These results strongly indicate that the Ru contact represents a suitable metallisation scheme for fabrication of high-performance ZnO-based optical devices and high-temperature devices. In addition, possible mechanisms are suggested to describe the annealing temperature dependence of the specific contact resistance.

  • ITZO ($In_2O_3$ : $SnO_2$ : ZnO = 90wt.% : 5wt.% : 5wt.%) thin films were fabricated on glass substrates (Eagle 2000) at room temperature with various working pressures (1~7 mTorr) by RF magnetron sputtering. The influence of the working pressure on the structural, electrical, and optical properties of the ITZO thin films were investigated. The XRD and FESEM results showed that all ITZO thin films are amorphous structures with very smooth surfaces regardless of the working pressure. Amorphous ITZO thin films deposited at 3 mTorr showed the best properties, such as a low resistivity, high transmittance, and figure of merit of $3.08{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, 81 %, and $10.52{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}^{-1}$, respectively.

  • The internal resistance of microbial fuel cell (MFC) using stainless steel skein for oxidizing electrode was investigated and the factors affecting the voltage generation were identified. We also investigated the effect of power management system (PMS) on the usability for MFC and the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. The performance of a stack microbial fuel cell connected with (PMS) or PMS+LED was analyzed by the voltage generation and organic matter reduction. The maximum power density of the unit cells was found to be $5.82W/m^3$ at $200{\Omega}$. The maximum current density was $47.53A/m^3$ without power overshoot even under $1{\Omega}$. The ohmic resistance ($R_s$) and the charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) of the oxidation electrode using stainless steel skein electrode, were $0.56{\Omega}$ and $0.02{\Omega}$, respectively. However, the sum of internal resistance for reduction electrode using graphite felts loaded Pt/C catalyst was $6.64{\Omega}$. Also, in order to understand the internal resistance, the current interruption method was used by changing the external resistance as $50{\Omega}$, $300{\Omega}$, $5k{\Omega}$. It has been shown that the ohm resistance ($R_s$) decreased with the external resistance. In the case of a series-connected microbial fuel cell, the reversal phenomenon occurred even though two cells having the similar performance. However, the output of the PMS constantly remained for 20 hours even when voltage reversal occurred. Also the removal ability of organic pollutants (SCOD) was not reduced. As a result of this study, it was found that buffering effect for a certain period of time when the voltage reversal occurred during the operation of the microbial fuel cell did not have a serious effect on the energy loss or the operation of the microbial fuel cell.
