Enhancement of $Ca^{2+}$ Spark Occurrence by Murrayafoline-A in Rat Ventricular Myocytes (Murrayafoline-A에 의한 심실 근육세포 $Ca^{2+}$ 스파크 발생의 증가)

  • Murrayafoline-A (1-methoxy-3-methylcarbazole) is a monomeric carbazole alkaloid found in Murraya euchrestifolia HAYATA and Glycosmis stenocarpa. We have recently shown that murrayafoline-A has positive inotropic effect in isolated rat ventricular myocytes. To know possible mechanisms for the positive inotropic effect of murrayafoline-A we examined the effects of murrayafoline-A on in situ behavior of cardiac $Ca^{2+}$ release units ('$Ca^{2+}$ sparks') and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) $Ca^{2+}$ loading using confocal $Ca^{2+}$ imaging method in single rat ventricular myocytes. Murrayafoline-A significantly increased the frequency (events/($10^3{\mu}m^2{\cdot}s$)) of $Ca^{2+}$ sparks in a concentration-dependent manner, with an $EC_{50}$ of $28{\pm}6.4{\mu}M$ and a maximal ~twofold change. The $Ca^{2+}$ content in the SR, measured as caffeine (10 mM)-induced $Ca^{2+}$ transient, was significantly increased by murrayafoline-A (${\approx}$116% and ${\approx}$123% of control at 25 and 100 ${\mu}M$, respectively). In addition, murrayafoline-A significantly increased the fractional $Ca^{2+}$ release, suggesting increase in the efficacy of $Ca^{2+}$ release at given SR $Ca^{2+}$ loading. These results suggest that murrayafoline-A may enhance contractility via increase in $Ca^{2+}$ release from the SR through the ryanodine receptors in ventricular myocytes.

Ferroelectric Properties of Bi4Ti3O12 Thin Films Deposited on Si and SrTiO3 Substrates According to Crystal Structure and Orientation (Si 및 SrTiO3 기판 위에 증착된 Bi4Ti3O12 박막의 결정구조 및 배향에 따른 강유전 특성)

  • Ferroelectric $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ films were deposited on $SrTiO_3(100)$ and Si(100) substrate by using conductive $SrRuO_3$ films as underlayer, and their ferroelectric and electrical properties were investigated depending on crystal structure and orientation. C-axis oriented $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ films were grown on well lattice-matched pseudo-cubic $SrRuO_3$ films deposited on $SrTiO_3(100)$ substrate, while random-oriented polycrystalline $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ films were grown on $SrRuO_3$ films deposited on Si(100) substrate. The random-oriented polycrystalline film showed a good ferroelectric hysteresis property with remanent polarization ($P_r$) of $9.4{\mu}C/cm^2$ and coercive field ($E_c$) of 84.9 kV/cm, while the c-axis oriented film showed $P_r=0.64{\mu}C/cm^2$ and $E_c=47kV/cm$ in polarizaion vs electric field curve. The c-axis oriented $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ film showed a dielectric constant of about 150 and lower thickness dependence in dielectric constant compared to the random-oriented film. Furthermore, the c-axis oriented $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ film showed leakage current lower than that of the polycrystalline film. The difference of ferroelectric properties in two films was explained from the viewpoint of depolarization effect due to orientation of spontaneous polarization and layered crystal structure of bismuth-base ferroelectric oxide.

Antimicrobial Effects of Sophorae Radix Extracts against Oral Microorganisms (구강미생물에 대한 고삼의 항균효과)

  • Objectives : Sophorae Radix (SR), the dried root of Sophorae Flavescens Aiton, has been used to treat atherosclerosis, arrhythma and skin diseases including scabies and eczema. The present study was examined to evaluate antimicrobial activities of SR extracts against oral microorganism. Methods : Antimicrobial properties of SR extracts were determined by agar diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and Actinomyces viscosus. Analysis of kurarinone from SR extracts was conducted using UPLC (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography). Results : The ethanolic extracts of SR showed stronger antimicrobial effect than methanolic extracts, while the aqueous extracts of SR had no activity. In addition, the higher content of kurarinone was found in ethanolic extracts than methanolic extracts. The purified kurarinone from ethanolic extracts showed potent antimicrobial activity with the MIC value of $3.9{\sim}7.8{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Conclusion : An ethanolic extract of SR showed antimicrobial properties against several oral microorganisms, and kuranrinone contributed to antimicrobial action of SR. Thus, ethanolic extracts of SR or purified kurarinone should be beneficial for the preparation of the useful agent for treating oral disease including anticaries.

The Dielectric Properties of $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ Heterolayered Thick Films ($BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ 이종층 후막의 유전특성)

  • The $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterolayered thick films were fabricated on alumina substrate by screening printing method. The obtained films were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ with bottom electrode of Pt for 2 hours. The structural and electrical properties of $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterolayered thick films were compared with pure $BaTiO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ films. The (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ phase was appeared at the $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterolayered thick films. The thickness of $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterolayered thick film, obtained by one printing, was about $50{\mu}m$. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the $BaTiO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterolayered thick films were about 1964, 5.5% at 1KHz, respectively.

Structural and Electrical Properties of SrRuO3 thin Film Grown on SrTiO3 (110) Substrate

  • We studied the structural and electrical properties of $SrRuO_3$ thin films grown on $SrTiO_3$ (110) substrate. High resolution X-ray diffraction measurement of the grown film showed 1) very sharp peaks for $SrRuO_3$ film with a very narrow rocking curve with FWHM = $0.045^{\circ}$ and 2) coherent growth behavior having the same in-plane lattice constants of the film as those of the substrate. The resisitivity data showed good metallic behavior; ${\rho}$ = 63(205) ${\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at 5 (300) K with a residual resistivity ratio of ~3. The observed kink at ${\rho}(T)$ showed that the ferromagnetic transition temperature was ~10 K higher than that of $SrRuO_3$ thin film grown on $SrTiO_3$ (001) substrate. The observed rather lower RRR value could be partially due to a very small amount of Ru vacancy generally observed in $SrRuO_3$ thin films grown by PLD method and is evident in the larger unit-cell volume compared to that of stoichiometric thin film.

  • The growth processes of improved methods for MBE, LPE and $\mu$ - PD methods are discussed taking the oxide materials, especially those of Bi - Sr - Ca - Cu family $LiNbO_3$ and $K_3Li_2Nb_5O_{15}$ family as examples. It is suggested that the crystal growth far from equilibr iu m including composition homogeneity has been achieved to satisfy in understanding and controlling the atomic interfaces.

  • (Ba, Sr)TiO3-based PTCR ceramics were sintered and cooled down with various cooling conditions in the air. AES was applied to investigate the composition change in the grain boundary and bulk area of oxidatively cooled samples. Ba component was deficit in grain boundary region, while oxygen was abundant than bulk region. The discrete changes of oxygen binding energies were confirmed in the grain boundary region of the heavily oxidized samples. It was supposed that the large binding energy shift resulted from the oxidation of the segregated Mn in grain boundary region and this idea was supported by the DV-X$\alpha$ molecular energy simulation.

  • The Strehl ratio(SR) expressions are derived from the diffration intensity distribution in a Gaussian pupil imaging system, and Marechal criterion is applied for the case of astigmatism aberration first and then to all the rest of the Seidel 1st order aberrations. The aberration criteria obtained are tabulated. In the case of Rayleigh's pupil, the same criteria are always smaller than Gaussian pupil, thus the latter is superior to the former.

  • The $(Ba_{1-X}Sr_X)ZrO_3$ powder showing chemically pure and fine particle size was attempted to be synthesized by the oxalate method. The objective of this study is to determine the optimum synthesis condition of stable $(Ba_{1-X}Sr_X)ZrO_3$ powder in terms of the temperatures coefficient of resonant frequency ${\tau}_f$ by examining the microstructure and dielectric properties of the synthesized powder. The six compounds (x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) of $(Ba_{1-X}Sr_X)ZrO_3$ were prepared by the oxalate method, and then calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ to obtain the crystalline $(Ba_{1-X}Sr_X)ZrO_3$ powder. The synthesized powder showed the globular-shape and average particle size of less than $0.2 \mu\textrm{m}$. The composition of x=0.5, i.e., half of Ba was replaced by Sr, is experted to show the zero value of temperatures coefficient of capacitance ${\tau}_c$.

  • Tubular $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membranes with $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Ti_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_{3-{\delta}}$ porous coating layer were prepared by extrusion and dip coating technique. XRD and SEM result showed the tubular membrane possessed the perovskite structure and porouscoating layer (thickness= about $2{\mu}m$) in surface. The oxygen permeation test was measured at condition of ambient air (feed side) and vacuum (permeate side) in the temperature range from 750 to $950^{\circ}C$. The oxygen permeation flux of $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ tubular membrane with $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Ti_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_{3-{\delta}}$ porous coating layer reached maximum $3.2mL/min{\cdot}cm^2$ at $950^{\circ}C$ and was higher than non-coated $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ tubular membrane. Long-term stability test result indicated that the oxygen permeation flux was quite stable during the 11 day.
