Segregation during solidification and homogenization during thermal exposure in GTD 111 were investigated. The microstructures of as-cast, standard heat-treated, and thermally exposed specimens were observed by SEM. A compositional analysis of each specimen was conducted by EDS. The dendrite core was enriched in W and Co, though lower levels of Ti and Ta were observed. An unexpected phase, in this case like the ${\eta}$ phase, was observed due to segregation near the ${\gamma}-{\gamma}^{\prime}$ eutectic in the standard heat-treated specimen. Segregation also induced microstructural evolution near the ${\gamma}-{\gamma}^{\prime}$ eutectic during the standard heat treatment. A quantitative analysis and microstructural observations showed that the thermal exposure at a high temperature enhanced the chemical homogeneity of the alloy.
This paper is a part of the series on positron annihilation spectroscopy of two-phase diffuse gas-and-dust aggregates, such as interstellar medium and the young remnants of type II supernovae. The results obtained from prior studies were applied here to detect the relationship between the processes of the annihilation of the K-shell electrons and incident positrons, and the effects of these processes on the optical spectra of their respective atoms. Particular attention was paid to the Doppler broadening of their optical lines. The relationship between the atomic mass of the elements and the Doppler broadening, ${\Delta}{\lambda}_D$ (${\AA}$), of their emission lines as produced in these processes was established. This relationship is also illustrated for isotope sets of light elements, namely $^3_2He$, $^6_3Li$, $^7_3Be$, $^{10}_5B$ and $^{11}_5B$. A direct correlation between the ${\gamma}-line$ luminosity ( $E_{\gamma}=1.022MeV$) and ${\Delta}{\lambda}_D$ (${\AA}$) was proved virtually. Qualitative estimates of the structure of such lines depending on the positron velocity distribution function, f(E), were made. The results are presented in tabular form and can be used to set up the objectives of further studies on active galactic nuclei and young remnants of type II supernovae.
Radiotherapy is currently applied in the treatment of human cancers. We studied whether genistein would enhance the radiosensitivity and explored its precise molecular mechanism in cervical cancer cells. After co-treatment with genistein and irradiation, the viability, cell cycle analysis, and apoptosis signaling cascades were elucidated in CaSki cells. The viability was decreased by co-treatment with genistein and irradiation compared with irradiation treatment alone. Treatment with only ${\gamma}$-irradiation led to cell cycle arrest at the $G_1$ phase. On the other hand, co-treatment with genistein and ${\gamma}$-irradiation caused a decrease in the $G_1$ phase and a concomitant increase up to 56% in the number of $G_2$ phase. In addition, co-treatment increased the expression of p53 and p21, and Cdc2-tyr-15-p, supporting the occurrence of $G_2/M$ arrest. In general, apoptosis signaling cascades were activated by the following events: release of cytochrome c, upregulation of Bax, down regulation of Bcl-2, and activation of caspase-3 and -8 in the treatment of genistein and irradiation. Apparently, co-treatment downregulated the transcripts of E6*I, E6*II, and E7. Genistein also stimulated irradiation-induced intracellular reactive oxygene, species (ROS) production, and co-treatment-induced apoptosis was inhibited by the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine, suggesting that apoptosis has occurred through the increase in ROS by genistein and ${\gamma}$-irradiation in cervical cancer cells. Gamma-irradiation increased cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-2) expression, whereas the combination with genistein and ${\gamma}$-irradiation almost completely prevented irradiation-induced COX-2 expression and $PGE_2$ production. Co-treatment with genistein and ${\gamma}$-irradiation inhibited proliferation through $G_2/M$ arrest and induced apoptosis via ROS modulation in the CaSki cancer cells.

We tried to investigate the changes in cortical activities according to emotional valence states during watching video clips. We examined the neural basis of two emotional states (positive and negative) using spectral power analysis and brain functional connectivity analysis of cortical current density time-series reconstructed from high-density electroencephalograms (EEGs). Fifteen healthy participants viewed a series of thirty-two 2 min emotional video clips. Sixty-four channel EEGs were recorded. Distributed cortical sources were reconstructed using weighted minimum norm estimation. The temporal and spatial characteristics of spectral source powers showing significant differences between positive and negative emotion were examined. Also, correlations between gamma-band activities and affective valence ratings were determined. We observed the changes of cortical current density time-series according to emotional states modulated by video clip. Gamma-band activities showed significant difference between emotional states for thirty seconds at the middle and the latter half of the video clip, mainly in prefrontal area. It was also significantly anti-correlated with the self-ratings of emotional valence. In addition, the gamma-band activities in frontal and temporal areas were strongly phase-synchronized, more strongly for negative emotional states. Cortical activities in frontal and temporal areas showed high spectral power and inter-regional phase synchronization in gamma-band during negative emotional states. It is inferred that the higher amygdala activation induced by negative stimuli resulted in strong emotional effects and caused strong local and global synchronization of neural activities in gamma-band in frontal and temporal areas.

Size and crystalline phase changes of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ nanoparticles formed in a $H_{2}/O_{2}$ flame have been investigated. At flame temperatures below $1350^{\circ}C$, the mean particle size increased monotonously with the distance from the burner edge; but in high-temperature flames above $1650^{\circ}C$, it suddenly decreased from 20 nm to ${\sim}3$ nm with the distance from the burner edge. The results of X-ray diffraction and HRTEM showed that this sudden reduction of the size of nanoparticles was accompanied by a partial phase transformation from ${\gamma}$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$ into ${\alpha}$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$. We suggest the structural instability due to ${\gamma}-$ to ${\alpha}-phase$ transformation as a mechanism for a rapid fragmentation of 20 nm particles into 3 nm ones.
We analyzed 0.5-45 keV data of NGC 3227 observed by Suzaku six times between 2008 October 28 and December 2. The count-count plot between the 0.5-3 keV and 3-10 keV bands exhibits a clear break, separating the data into bright and faint phases. Applying the difference spectrum method and time-averaged spectral fits to the phase data, we found the presence of two kinds of variable primary X-rays, (1) a hard primary component with ${\Gamma}{\sim}1.7$ dominating in the faint phase and (2) a soft primary continuum with ${\Gamma}{\sim}2.4$ appearing in the bright phase, both affected by partial absorption. Considering their timing and spectral characteristics, component (1) is presumably identical to a Compton continuum in the low/hard state, while component (2) may correspond to the hard tail emission in the high/soft state, or compact-jet emission. In that case, an accretion ow onto the central super massive black hole in NGC 3227 can be interpreted to include the two different states.
$Ce^{3+}$-doped yttrium aluminum gallium garnet (YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$), which is a green-emitting phosphor, was synthesized by solid state reaction using ${\alpha}$-phase or ${\gamma}$-phase of nano-sized $Al_2O_3$ as the Al source. The processing conditions and the chemical composition of phosphor for the maximum emission intensity were optimized on the basis of emission intensity under vacuum UV excitation. The optimum heating temperature for phosphor preparation was $1550^{\circ}C$. Photoluminescence properties of the synthesized phosphor were investigated in detail. From the excitation and emission spectra, it was confirmed that the YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors effectively absorb the vacuum UV of 120-200 nm and emit green light positioned around 530 nm. The crystalline phase of the alumina nanoparticles affected the particle size and the luminescence property of the synthesized phosphors. Nano-sized ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was more effective for the achievement of higher emission intensity than was nano-sized ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$. This discrepancy is considered to be because the diffusion of $Al^{3+}$ into $Y_2O_3$ lattice is dependent on the crystalline phase of $Al_2O_3$, which affects the phase transformation of YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors. The optimum chemical composition, having the maximum emission intensity, was $(Y_{2.98}Ce_{0.02})(Al_{2.8}Ga_{1.8})O_{11.4}$ prepared with ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. On the other hand, the decay time of the YAGG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphors, irrespective of the crystalline phase of the nano-sized alumina source, was below 1 ms due to the allowed $5d{\rightarrow}4f$ transition of the $Ce^{3+}$ activator.

It has been investigated corrosion resistance and crystal structure of Zn-Cr coatings fabricated by electroplating method and electron-beam physical vapor deposition method(EB-P VD). The electroplated Zn-Cr alloy consists mainly of η'-Zn phase for the lower Cr content than 7.9 wt% Cr and ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr phase for the higher Cr content. In the Zn-Cr alloy fabricated by EB-PVD the ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr phase appeared clearly at 3 wt% Cr and it became the sole phase at 50 wt%Cr. The amount of η'-Zn phase decreased obviously with increasing Cr content when it exceeded 15 wt% Cr. The electrochemical measurement of the electroplated Zn-Cr film has shown corrosion potential of about -1000 mV. The current density of active region and the amount of dissolved Zn and Cr decreased significantly with increasing Cr content. The electrochemical characteristics of Zn-Cr alloy fabricated by EB-PVD have shown that the alloy of 50 wt% Cr had the highest corrosion potential(-500 mV) and the lowest critical passive current density than that of the electroplated.
Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening found in $Ni_{3}Al$ based ordered alloys using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tilt experiments by the weak-beam method were made to obtain some information concerning the cross slip mechanism of the superlattice dislocation. The strength of ${\gamma}'-Ni_3$(Al,Ti) increases over the temperature range of experiment by the precipitation of fine $\gamma$ particles. The peak temperature where a maximum strength was obtained shifted to higher temperature. Over the whole temperature range, the interaction between dislocation and $\gamma$ precipitates is attractive. On the temperature range of 773 K to 973 K, the dislocations in ${\gamma}'$ matrix move on (111) primary slip plane. When the applied stress is removed, the dislocations make cross slip into (010) plane, while those in $\gamma$ precipitates remain on the (111) primary slip plane. The increase of high temperature strength in ${\gamma}'-Ni_3$(Al,Ti) containing $\gamma$ precipitates is due to the restraint of cross slip of dislocations from (111) to (010) by the dispersion of disordered $\gamma$ particles.
The thermal degradation pattern of $\alpha$-, ${\gamma}$-and $\delta$-tocopherols in glycerol was investigated during heating at 100~25$0^{\circ}C$ for 5-60 min in the absence of oxyge. The tocopherols and thermally decomposed products were separated by HPLC with a reversed phase $\mu$-Bondapak C18-column. The degradation pattern of $\alpha$-tocopherol during the heating in the absence of oxygen was different from those of ${\gamma}$-and $\delta$-tocopherols. But the degradation patterns of ${\gamma}$-and $\delta$-tocopherols were similar to each other. The residual content of $\alpha$-tocopherol during the heating in the absence of oxygen decreased to the range 12~65% and those of ${\gamma}$-and $\delta$-tocopherols decreased to the range 4~96%. The thermal degradation of tocopherols in the absence of oxygen was less than that in the presence of oxygen.
