  • The phase stability of atomized U-10wt. %Mo powder and the thermal compatibility of dispersed fuel meats at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$ have been characterized. Atomized U-10Mo powder has a good \ulcorner-U phase stability, and excellent thermal compatibility with aluminum matrix in a dispersion fuel. It is thought that the good phase stability is related to th large supersaturation of Mo atoms in the atomized particles. The reasons for the excellent thermal compatibility have been considered to be as follows. Before thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U in particle, supersaturated Mo atoms at ${\gamma}$-U grain boundaries inhibit the diffusion of Al atoms. After thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U into ${\gamma}$-U and U$_2$Mo, the intermetallic compound of U$_2$Mo seems to retard the penetration of Al atoms. The penetration mechanisms of aluminum atoms in the atomized particles are assumed be classified as (a) diffusion through the reacted layer between fuel particles and Al matrix leaving a kernel-like unreacted island and (b) diffusion along grain boundaries showing several unreacted islands and more reacted regions.

  • Surface morphologies and fundamental characteristics of molybdenum nitride films deposited by reactive dc magnetron sputtering were studied for application to Cu diffusion barrier. A phase transformation from Mo to $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N phase at 0.5$N_2$ flow ratio.($N_2$/(Ar+$N_2$)) equal to and larger than 0.2, whereas a second phase transformation to $\gamma$-MoN phase at 0.5 N2 flow ratio, With the variation of the N2 ratio the surface morphologies of the films were generally smooth except the cases of 0.2 and 0.3$N_2$ gas rations, where build-up of film stresses occurred. $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N film was found to crystallize at the deposition temperature of 40$0^{\circ}C$. The surfaces of $\gamma$-Mo$_2$N films deposited up to 40$0^{\circ}C$ were smooth, but the film deposited at 50$0^{\circ}C$ had very rough surface morphology. It seems that this was due to the building-up of thermal stresses at the high deposition temperature, which might lead to hillock formation.

  • In the present studies, we assessed the stability of active components and toxicological safety of irradiated Angelica gigas Nakai(Danggui). In order to confirm the stability of active components in the ${\gamma}$-irradiated roots of Danggui, the quantitative analysis of decursin and decursinol angelate of ${\gamma}$-irradiated sample was carried out by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods using reverse phase columns and normal phase columns. From the root of Danggui, decursin and decursinol angelate were isolated by a silica gel column chromatography(toluene : ether (1 : 1), Hexane : EtOAc(15 : 1)). And then the structures were confirmed in the 1H and 13C-NMR analysis. The HPLC chromatograms of decursin and decursinol angelate in ${\gamma}$-irradiated Danggui were similar with those of non-irradiated sample. In the examination of in vitro genotoxicity of the water extract from ${\gamma}$-irradiated Danggui using Salmonella reversion assay(Ames test) and micronucleus test in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, mutagenicity was not exhibited in the two assays with or without metabolic activation. These resutls suggest that active components in the ${\gamma}$-irradiated Danggui should be stable and that the safety of ${\gamma}$-irradiated Danggui could be revealed in further test in vivo.

  • A general theory of polymer adsorption at a semi-permeable oil-water interface of the biphasic solution is presented. The configurational factor of the solution in the presence of the semi-open boundary at the interface is evaluated by the quasicrystalline lattice model. The present theory gives the feature of the bulk concentration equilibria between oil-water subsystems and the surface excesses of ${\Gamma}^{\alpha}$ and ${\Gamma}^\{beta}$ of the polymer segments as a function of the degree of polymerization $\gamma$, the Flory-Huggins parameter in $\beta$-phase $x_{\rho}^{{\beta}_{\rho}}$, the differential adsorption energy parameter in $\beta$-phase $x_{\sigma}^{{\beta}_{\rho}}$, the differential interaction energy parameter ${\Delta}x_{\rho}$ and the bulk concentration of the polymer in ${\beta}-phase ${\varphi}_2^{{\beta(*)}_2}$. From our numerical results, the characteristics of ${\Gamma}^{\alpha}$ are shown to be significantly different from those of ${\Gamma}^{\beta}$ in the case of high polymers, and this would be the most apparent feature of the adsorption behavior of the polymer at a semi-permeable oil-water interface, which is sensitively dependent on ${\Delta}x_{\rho}$ and r.

  • A single-beam gamma densitometer is utilized to measure the average void fraction in a small diameter stainless steel pipe under critical flow conditions. A typical design of a single-beam gamma densitometer is composed of a sealed gammaray source, a collimator, a scintillation detector, and a data acquisition system that includes an amplifier and a single channel analyzer. It is operated in the count mode and can be calibrated with a test pipe and various types of phantoms made of polyethylene. A good average void fraction is obtained for a small diameter pipe with various flow regimes of the core, annular, stratified, and bubbly flows. Several factors influencing the performance of the gamma densitometer are examined, including the distance between the source and the detector, the measuring time, and the ambient temperature. The void fraction is measured during an adiabatic downward two-phase critical flow in a vertical pipe. The test pipe has an inner diameter of 10.9 mm and a thickness of 3.2 mm. The average void fraction was reasonably measured for a two-phase critical flow in the presence of nitrogen gas.

  • Bubble size is a key parameter for an accurate prediction of bubble behaviours in the multi-dimensional two-phase flow. In the current STAR CCM+ CFD code, a mechanistic bubble size model $S{\gamma}$ is available for the prediction of bubble size in the flow channel. As another model, Yun model is developed based on DEBORA that is subcooled boiling data in high pressure. In this study, numerical simulation for the gas-liquid two-phase flow was conducted to validate and confirm the performance of $S{\gamma}$ model and Yun model, using the commercial CFD code STAR CCM+ ver. 10.02. For this, local bubble models was evaluated against the air-water data from DEDALE experiments (1995) and Hibiki et al. (2001) in the vertical pipe. All numerical results of $S{\gamma}$ model predicted reasonably the two-phase flow parameters and Yun model is needed to be improved for the prediction of air-water flow under low pressure condition.

  • The previous investigations of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity in the memory retrieval tasks demonstrated that event-related potentials (ERP) during recollection showed different durations and the peak levels from those without recollection. However, it has been unknown that recollection in memory retrieval also modulates high-frequency brain rhythms as well as establishes large-scale synchronization across different cortical areas. In this study, we examined the spectral components of the EEG signals, especially the gamma bands (20-80Hz), measured during the memory retrieval tasks. Specifically, we focused on two major spectral components: first, we evaluated the temporal patterns of the power spectral density before and after the onset of the memory retrieval task; second, we estimated phase synchrony between all possible pairs of EEG channels to evaluate large-scale synchronization. Fourteen healthy subjects performed the memory retrieval task in the virtual reality environment where they selected whether or not t he present item was seen in the previous training period. When the subjects viewed the unseen items, the middle gamma power (40-60Hz) appeared to increase 200-500ms after stimulus onset while the low gamma power (20Hz) was suppressed all the way through the post-stimulus period 150ms after onset. The degree of phase synchronization in this low gamma level, however, increased when the subjects fetched the item from memory. This suggests that phase synchrony analysis might reveal different aspects of the memory retrieval process than the gamma power, providing additional information to the inference on the brain dynamics during memory retrieval.

  • This study is to investigate the phase changes and cold workability after isothermal transformation at $780^{\circ}C$ by using the high temperature gas nitrided (HTGN) STS 430 ferritic stainless steel specimens. The phase diagram of STS 430 steel obtained by calculation showed that the phase appeared at $1100^{\circ}C$ showed as ${\alpha}+{\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\gamma}+Cr_2N{\rightarrow}{\gamma}+Cr_2N+CrN$ with increasing nitrogen concentration. Also, the transformation of ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}Cr_2N$ during heat treatment isothermally at $780^{\circ}C$, nitrogen pearlite with lamellar type was fully formed at the nitrogen permated surface layer for 10 hrs. However, this transformation was not completed for 1 hr, resulting nitrogen pearlite plus martensite. The cold rolled specimen of isothermally transformed at $780^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs after high temperature gas nitriding decreased the layer thickness of nitrogen pearlite inducing the deformation of hard $Cr_2N$ phase. the dissolution rate of $Cr_2N$ phase increased rapidly with increasing cold rolling ratio. Specimens with the microstructure of nitrogen pearlite (isothermally transformed at $780^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs) were possible to cold rolling without crack formation. However, the mixed structures of nitrogen pearlite + martensite (isothermally transformed at $780^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr) were impossible to cold deformation without cracking.

  • We derived the average bit error rate (BER) of coherent free-space optical (FSO) systems with digital binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulations over atmospheric turbulence channels with a gamma-gamma distribution. To obtain a generalized derivation in a closed-form expression, we used special integrals and transformations of the Meijer G function. Furthermore, we numerically analyzed and simulated the average BER behavior according to the average SNR for different turbulence strengths. Simulation results are demonstrated to confirm the analytical results.

  • The effect of solidification rate on the microstructure of directionally solidified IN792+ Hf superalloy has been studied. Solidification sequence and precipitation behavior of the alloy have been analysed by microstructural observation. The script carbide transformed to faceted carbide with decreasing solidification rates. The incorporation of ${\gamma}$ phase into the faceted carbide was due to dendritic growth of carbides. Some elongated carbide bars formed along the grain boundaries at a solidification rate of 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$/s. Two zones, ${\gamma}$' forming elements enriched zone and depleted zone, were found in the residual liquid area. Eutectic ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$' nucleated in the f forming elements enriched zone. Formation of eutectic ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$' increased the ratio of (Ti+Hf+Ta+W)/Al and induced η phase precipitation. The ratio of (Ti+Hf+Ta+W)/Al decreased at lower solidification rates due to sufficient back diffusion in the residual liquid area. Hence, the Precipitation of the η Phase efficiently suppressed at the lower solidification rate.
