Silicon carbide ceramics with sintering additives from the system AlN-Y$_2$O$_3$ can be gas-pressure sintered to theoretical density. While commonly a combination of sesquioxides is used such as Al$_2$O$_3$-Y$_2$O$_3$, the oxynitrid additives offer the advantage that only a nitrogen atmosphere is require instead of a powder. By starting form a mixture of ${\beta}$-SiC and ${\alpha}$-SiC, and by performing dedicated heat treatments after densification, anisotropic grain growth is obtained which leads to a platelet microstructure showing enhance fracture toughness. In the present work, recent improvement of the mechanical behaviour of these materials at ambient and high temperatures is reported. By means of a surface oxidation treatment in air it is possible to obtain four-point bending strengths in excess of 1 GPa, and the strength retention at high temperatures is significantly improved.
In the study the characteristics change of crystallized $Li_2O$.$Al_2O_3$.$SiO_2$ glass-ceramics when varying RO ratio and increasing Al2O3 were investigated to produce a glass-ceramics with high mechanical strength and low thermal expansion. Parent glass was obtained by melting at 1,350~1,40$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and annealing at 45$0^{\circ}C$ and the various physical characteristics were measured. Results were as follows; 1. When ZnO was replaced by MgO thermal expansion coefficient was lowered when increasing ZnO content. 2. Major crystal phase was $\beta$-spodumene the crystal growth mophology was the three dimensional sphere and the activation energy for crystallization was 54.6 Kcal/mol. 3. Parent glass heat-treated at 95$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours had ; a) thermal expansion coeff. of $23.2{\times}10^{-7}$/$^{\circ}C$ b)whiteness of 76 c) microhardness of 1,089kg/$mm^2$
Porous glass ceramics composed of Li$_2$O.-Ti $O_2$-P$_2$$O_{5}$ -CaO were prepared by melting and 2 step heat treatment for nucleation at 61$0^{\circ}C$ and crystallization at 78$0^{\circ}C$. subsequently $\beta$-Ca$_3$(P $O_4$)$_2$crystal phase was selectively leached out in 1N-HC1 solution for 3 days, leaving Li $Ti_2$(P $O_4$)$_3$crystal phases. prepared porous glass ceramics were immersed in 1M AgN $O_3$solution for ion exchange. Staphylococcus aureus and salmonella typhi were used in this study. It was found taht the resultant porous glas ceramics show excellent bacteriostatic properties.

$Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics were sintered by a solid-state reaction. LAS (${\beta}$-spodumene) and $Fe_2O_3$ were added to the $Al_2TiO_5$ composition for enhancement of sintering behavior such as mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance. The sintered body was much densified by addition of LAS and $Fe_2O_3$ because LAS formed the liquid-phase and $Fe_2O_3$ suppressed the grain growth. We have systematically investigated the sintering characteristics, microstructures, mechanical properties, and thermal shock resistance according to the change of the amount of additive. When the additive of LAS (20 wt%)-$Fe_2O_3$ was added to $Al_2TiO_5$, it confirmed that superior mechanical properties of the fracture strength of over 120 MPa and the thermal shock resistance of over $1,200^{\circ}C$ were achieved.

One-dimensional nanosturctures such as nanowires and nanotube have been mainly proposed as important components of nano-electronic devices and are expected to play an integral part in design and construction of these devices. Silicon carbide(SiC) is one of a promising wide bandgap semiconductor that exhibits extraordinary properties, such as higher thermal conductivity, mechanical and chemical stability than silicon. Therefore, the synthesis of SiC-based nanowires(NWs) open a possibility for developing a potential application in nano-electronic devices which have to work under harsh environment. In this study, one-dimensional nanowires(NWs) of cubic phase silicon carbide($\beta$-SiC) were efficiently produced by thermal chemical vapor deposition(T-CVD) synthesis of mixtures containing Si powders and hydrocarbon in a alumina boat about $T\;=\;1400^{\circ}C$ SEM images are shown that the temperature below $1300^{\circ}C$ is not enough to synthesis the SiC NWs due to insufficient thermal energy for melting of Si Powder and decomposition of methane gas. However, the SiC NWs are produced over $1300^{\circ}C$ and the most efficient temperature for growth of SiC NWs is about $1400^{\circ}C$ with an average diameter range between 50 ~ 150 nm. Raman spectra revealed the crystal form of the synthesized SiC NWs is a cubic phase. Two distinct peaks at 795 and $970\;cm^{-1}$ over $1400^{\circ}C$ represent the TO and LO mode of the bulk $\beta$-SiC, respectively. In XRD spectra, this result was also verified with the strongest (111) peaks at $2{\theta}=35.7^{\circ}$, which is very close to (111) plane peak position of 3C-SiC over $1400 ^{\circ}C$ TEM images are represented to two typical $\beta$-SiC NWs structures. One is shown the defect-free $\beta$-SiC nanowire with a (111) interplane distance with 0.25 nm, and the other is the stacking-faulted $\beta$-SiC nanowire. Two SiC nanowires are covered with $SiO_2$ layer with a thickness of less 2 nm. Moreover, by changing the flow rate of methane gas, the 300 sccm is the optimal condition for synthesis of a large amount of $\beta$-SiC NWs.

The glass-ceramic of the $Li_{2}O-Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}$ system was investigated to develop the low thermal expansion materials. The glass of this system was heat treated at $775^{\circ}C$ for 2 h for nucleation and subsequently at $825{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h for crystallization. The crystal structure of the glass-ceramic of this system was a single phase of $\beta$-quartz solid solution($Li_{x}Al_{x}Si_{1-x}O_{2}$). The thermal expansion of the glass-ceramic showed $4.40{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}1.33{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$ between $25{\sim}300^{\circ}C$ and $1.56{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}2.53{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$ between $25{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, higher than lower temperature range. The mechanical strength remained almost same at around high 110 MPa with heating temperature changes.
Birnessite (birnessite, $7{\AA}$ manganate, ${\delta}-MnO_2$) is a major mineral comprising manganese nodule. Various synthetic methods have been studied and evaluated because it can be used as an ion exchange agent and a battery recharging material. However, it is difficult to obtain a single birnessite phase because it does not have a stoichiometric chemical composition. Feitknechtite (${\beta}-MnOOH$) is formed as an intermediate product during birnessite synthesis and in this study, the transition of this phase to birnessite was compared by using XRD and SEM. Two different methods, Feng et al. (2004) and Luo et al. (1998), based on redox reaction were used. It was possible to obtain the impurity-free birnessite for the sample aged 60 days at $27^{\circ}C$ by Feng et al. (2004) method and 3 days at $60^{\circ}C$ by Luo et al. (1998) method. The phase transition rate of the feitknechtite phase was slower in the case of $Mg^{2+}$ doped birnessite which was synthesized by Luo et al. (1998) method, and almost single phase almost single phase birnessite was identified at high temperature. Crystal surface and morphology also confirmed the difference between the samples synthesized by two methods.
On the precipitatiopn and ripening reaction of the precipitates from a lead nitrate and an oxalic acid dissolved in ethanol, a new crystalline phase was obtained, whose X-ray diffraction data have not previously been reported. The crystal system was determined to be monoclinic. The unit-cell parameters were refined to a =10.613(2)$\AA$, b =7.947(2))$\AA$, c =6.189(1)$\AA$, and $\beta$=104.48(2)$^{\circ}$.
PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) has at least from known crystalline structure ( ; they are referred to as the $\alpha$, $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\alpha_p$ phase or forms II, I, III and $IV_p$). In this study, the manufactured PVDF thin films through vapor deposition method had for II ( ; the substrate temperature at 30$^{\circ}C$). The dielectric behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride) is affected by orientation and crystal modification. The very high value of the dielectric constant for high temperature conditioned film is believed to be due to the orientation effect. The loss peak caused by molecular motion of the molecules in crystalline regions.
A small amount of misch metal and/or Zr was added as a dopant to 70.5wt----Cu-26wt----Zn-3.5wt----Al shape memory alloy in order to study the effect of grain refinement and heat treatments on the transformation behavior, stabilization of martensite, and shape memory ability. It was found that the addition of misch metal and Zr was very effective for reducing the grain size. The fracture mode has been changed from intergranular brittle fracture to ductile fracture with void formation and coalescence by the addition of misch metal and Zr. Aging of the ${\beta}$-phase decreases the $M_s$ temperature, but that of the martensite phase increases the $A_s$ temperature. The hysteresis of transformation temperature ${\Delta}T(A_s-M_s)$ has an increasing tendancy by grain refinement. The crystal structure of martensite was identified as monoclinic structure. As the grain size decreased, martensite stabilization more easily occured and the shape, memory ability has been reduced by the grain size refined.
