  • Objective: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a condition that is characterized by patellar discomfort or pain that is aggravated during certain activities such as ascending/descending stairs. The Patellofemoral Disability Index (PDI) was developed to assess the effect of pain on functional activities in individuals with PFPS. The objectives of the current study were to determine the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and validity of this index. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Forty-one subjects who had PFPS with a mean age of $28.8{\pm}5.0years$ and a mean body mass index of $25.6{\pm}4.7kg/m^2$ participated in the study. All subjects were concurrently enrolled in a clinical trial for which they were instructed to complete hamstring-resistance exercises for 4 weeks. Over the course of the intervention, they completed both the PDI and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) at baseline after two weeks, and after four weeks. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the criterion validity. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ was used to examine the internal consistency. Intraclass correlation coefficients with 95% confidence interval were computed to examine test-retest reliability. Results: Subjects' responses within both the PDI and the ODI yielded Pearson correlation coefficient values that were positive and highly significant (range, 0.73-0.97; p<0.001). There was a high level of internal consistency (Cronbach's ${\alpha}{\geq}0.8$), with the exception of stair climbing (Cronbach's ${\alpha}=0.65$). Intraclass correlation ranged from 0.87 to 0.92, indicating high levels of test-retest reliability. Conclusions: The PDI is a valid, reliable, and feasible method of assessing pain and functional ability in patients with PFPS.

  • The objective of this study was to define the effects of various cooking and re-heating methods (pan roasting, steaming, oven grilling and micro-waving) on the cholesterol and formation of cholesterol oxidation products in beef loin during storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Raw samples showed lower total cholesterol content than cooked products sampled during storage for 6 d. The following cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) were separated by gas chromatography: $7{\beta}$-hydroxy cholesterol, $20{\alpha}$-hydroxy cholesterol, 25-hydroxy cholesterol, cholestane-$3{\beta}$, $5{\alpha}$, $6{\beta}$ triol (triol), ${\alpha}$-epoxide and 7-ketocholesterol. Total amounts of COPs/cholesterol at 0 d were 0.74, 0.63, 0.76, 1.23 and 0.83% for the raw sample, pan roasting, steaming, oven grilling and micro waving methods, respectively. After 6 d storage almost of the samples had higher content of total COPs than at 0 and 3 d; the lowest (0.55%) COPs was found in the steaming cooking and re-heating method. The highest (5.96%) of COPs was found in the pan roasting cooking and re-heating method after 6 d storage. In conclusion, the concentration of total cholesterol and cholesterol oxidation of beef loin were increased as a consequence of cooking and re-heating methods. Steaming and micro-waving methods showed the lowest of cholesterol oxidation products under refrigerated storage for 6 d. However, each cooking and re-heating method had its own distinctive cooking effects.

  • The microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe-Nb-B-N thin film alloys, which produced by rf magnetron sputtering method in $Ar+N_2$ mixed gas atmosphere, were investigated. The $Fe_{70}Nb_{14}B_{11}N_5$ films, annealed at 59$0^{\circ}C$, exhibit soft magnetic properties: $4{\pi}M_s=16.5kG$ , $H_c=0.13Oe$ and ${\mu}_{eff}$ (1~10 MHz)=5, 000. The frequency stability of the Fe-Nb-B-N films has also been found to be good up to 10 MHz. The Fe-Nb-B-N thin film alloys annealed at 59$0^{\circ}C$ consist of three phase; fine crystalline $\alpha$-Fe phase with grain size of about 5~10 nm, Nb-B rich amorphous phase and Nb-nitride precipitates with the size of less than 3 nm. Annealed Fe-Nb-B films have two phases; $\alpha$-Fe grains with the size of about 10 nm and Nb-B rich amorphous phase. The addition of N decreased $\alpha$-Fe grain size due to the precipitation of NbN. The good magnetic properties of the Fe-Nb-B-N film alloys are due to fine $\alpha$-Fe grains resulting from the precipitation of NbN.

  • For scrutinizing the changes of aggregated bacteria in Lake Paldang, the FISH method was applied by using the rhodamine labeled probes, and total bacteria, chloropyll a concentrations and nutrients concentrations were measured. The aggregates were collected with sediment traps. The T-N, T-P, chlorophyll a concentrations of aggregates were higher 5-15 times, 81-140 and 49-66 times than water samples, respectively. Also, the bacterial numbers of aggregates were 200 times higher than those of water smaples. The ratios of each groups of water sample were 2.1-7.4% for $\alpha$-group, 4.5-8.3% for $\beta$-group, 2.1-7.4% for $\gamma$-group, 2.1-6.1% for Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group and 0.1-2.5% for 'other'group, respectively. While, in aggregates, the ratios of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$- and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium groups were very small and most abundant group was 'other' bacteria. With these results, the aggregated bacteria in Lake Paldang had a particular group composition of bacteria.

  • The interaction of phenoxide anion with .the mixed micelles of CTAB(Cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide) and TTAB(Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants($K_s$) of phenoxide anion into the mixed micellar phase and the critical micellar concentrations(CMC) of those mixed surfactant systems have been measured and analyzed with the change of overall mole fraction of CTAB($\alpha_{CTAB}$) The effects of additives(n-pentanol and NaBr) on the solubilization of phenoxide anion by those mixed surfactant systems have been also measured. There was a great decrease on the values of solubilization constant and CMC with these additives. For the thermodynamic study, the dependence of $K_s$ values on temperature has been measured and various thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}G^0_s$, ${\Delta}H^0_s$ and ${\Delta}S^0_s$) have been also calculated. The results show that all the values of ${\Delta}G^0_s$ and ${\Delta}H^0_s$ are negative within the measured temperature region but the values of ${\Delta}S^0_s$ are positive.

  • Measurement of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3, ceramide trihexoside) in urine has clinical importance for monitoring after enzyme replacement therapy in Fabry disease patients. The disease is an X-linked lipid storage disorder that results from a deficiency of the enzyme ${\alpha}$-galactosidase A (${\alpha}$-Gal A). The lack of ${\alpha}$-Gal A causes an intracellular accumulation of glycosphingolipids, mainly Gb3. A simple, rapid, and highly sensitive analytical method for Gb3 in urine was developed without labor-extensive pre-treatment by electrospray ionization MS/MS (ESI-MS/MS). Only simple 5-fold dilution of urine is necessary for the extraction and isolation of Gb3 in urine. Gb3 in diluted urine was dissolved in dioxane containing C17:0 Gb3 as an internal standard. After centrifugation it was directly injected and analyzed through guard column by in combination with multiple reaction monitoring mode of ESI-MS/MS. Eight isoforms of Gb3 were completely resolved from urine matrix. C24:0 Gb3 occupied 50% of total Gb3 as a major component in urine. Linear relationship for Gb3 isoforms was found in the range of 0.005${\sim}$5.0 ${\mu}$g/ml. The limit of detection (S/N=5) was 0.005 ${\mu}$g/ml and limit of quantification was 0.05 ${\mu}$g/ml for C24:0 Gb3 with acceptable precision and accuracy. Correlation coefficient of calibration curves for 8 Gb3 isoforms ranged from 0.9598 to 0.9975. This method could be useful for rapid and sensitive 1st line Fabry disease screening, monitoring and/or diagnostic tool for Fabry disease.

  • Results of intrinsic and extrinsic fluorescence studies on choline oxidase revealed that the enzyme at high alkaline pH values has more accessible hydrophobic patches relative to acidic pH. Fluorescence quenching studies with acrylamide confirm these changes. The quenching constants were also determined at different pH(s) by using the Stern-Volmer equation. CD studies showed that at higher pH a transition from $\alpha$-helix to $\beta$- structure was appeared while at lower pH the content of $\alpha$-helix structure was increased. Furthermore, analysis of the spectral data using chemometric method gave evidence for existence of intermediate components at very high pH(s). Results of thermal denaturation evaluated that the enzyme has the most instability at higher pH(s). Altogether low and high pH values caused significant alteration on secondary and tertiary structures of choline oxidase via inducing of an intermediate.

  • We studied the charge redistribution in the Pt-M (M=Cu, Co) alloys by X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy(XANES) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS). These analysis tools provide us information about the charge transfer in the valence band of intermetallic bonding. The samples were prepared by arc-melting method. After annealing this samples in vacuum for several hours, we cold get the ordered samples, which were confirmed with XRD analysis. the core and valence level energy shift in these system were investigated by Mg $K\alpha$(1253.6eV) x-ray source for Pt-Co alloys and monochromatized Al $K\alpha$ (1486.6eV) for Pt-Cu alloys. Pt L2, L3-edge, and Cu, Co K-edge XANES spectra were measured with the total electron-yield mode detector at the 3Cl beam line of the PLS (Pohang light source0. from the changes of White line (WL) area and the core level shifts of the each metal sites, we can obtain the information about the electrons participating in the intermetallic bonding of the Pt-Cu and Pt-Co alloys.
