  • Stress variation due to size variation and the eccentricity of ring type tensile specimen was analyzed by FLAC program. To get the stable tensile strength the ratio of inner to outer ring diameter should be within a certain range. Diameter ratio of 0.3 was suggested to be adequate. It seemed to be difficult to determine the tensile strength because of stress distortion if eccentricity exceeded home limit. To limit the error in 10%, lateral and axial eccentricity was analyzed to be in the limits of 3% and 10%, respectively.

A Novel Hybrid Sequential Start Control System for Large Inductive Loads

  • The inrush current of a large inductive load can be reduced with a soft starter; however, the large inrush current caused by simultaneous bulk starts (SBSs) cannot be effectively reduced. In order to reduce the high inrush current and voltage sag owing to the SBSs of large capacity inductive loads within a power network, a novel hybrid sequential start control system is proposed, implemented on embedded systems, and evaluated with a testbed in this study. From the experimental and simulation results of the proposed control system, the inrush current could be effectively restricted below the maximum current capacity of a power distributing board. Moreover, with the proposed system, power cost typically dictated by the peak power consumption can be fairly reduced, and the quality of the power system connected to the inductive loads can be efficiently increased.

WFIRST ULTRA-PRECISE ASTROMETRY I: KUIPER BELT OBJECTS

  • I show that the WFIRST microlensing survey will enable detection and precision orbit determination of Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) down to $H_{vega}=28.2$ over an effective area of ${\sim}17deg^2$. Typical fractional period errors will be ${\sim}1.5%{\times}10^{0.4(H-28.2)}$ with similar errors in other parameters for roughly 5000 KBOs. Binary companions to detected KBOs can be detected to even fainter limits, $H_{vega}=29$, corresponding to R~30.5 and effective diameters D~7 km. For KBOs H~23, binary companions can be found with separations down to 10 mas. This will provide an unprecedented probe of orbital resonance and KBO mass measurements. More than a thousand stellar occultations by KBOs can be combined to determine the mean size as a function of KBO magnitude down to H~25. Current ground-based microlensing surveys can make a significant start on finding and characterizing KBOs using existing and soon-to-be-acquired data.

  • Beryllium oxide (BeO) is being re-emphasized and utilized in Micro Modular Reactors (MMR) because of its prominent nuclear and high temperature properties in recent years. The implications of the research about effects of neutron irradiation on the microstructure and properties of BeO are significant. This article comprehensively reviews the effects of neutron irradiation on BeO and proposes the maximum permissible neutron doses at different temperatures for BeO without cracks in appearance according to the data in the previous literature. This maximum permissible neutron dose value has important reference significance for the experimental study of BeO. The effects of neutron irradiation on the thermal conductivity and flexural strength of BeO are also discussed. In addition, microstructure evolution of irradiated BeO during post-irradiation annealing is summarized. This review article has important implications for the application of BeO in MMR.

Groundwater Recharge and Discharge in the Urban-rural Composite Area (도농복합지역 지하수 함양과 배출에 대한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to identify groundwater recharge and discharge amounts of a representative urban-rural composite area located in Yongin city, Kyounggi-do, Korea. Groundwater recharge would be affected by mainly two processes in the study area: rainfall and leakage from public water pipelines including water-supply and sewage system. Groundwater recharge rate was estimated to be 13.5% by applying annual groundwater level data from two National Groundwater Monitoring Stations to the master regression curve method. Subsequently, the recharge amounts were determined to be $13,253{\times}10^3m^3/yr$. Leakage amounts from water-supply and sewage system were estimated to be $3,218{\times}10^3$ and $5,696{\times}10^3m^3/yr$, respectively. On the whole, a total of the recharge amounts was $22,167{\times}10^3m^3/yr$, of which 60% covers rainfall recharge and 40% pipeline leakage. Groundwater discharge occurred through three processes in the composite area: baseflow, well pumping, and discharge from urban infrastructure including groundwater infiltration into sewage pipeline and artificial extraction of groundwater to protect underground facilities from submergence. Discharge amounts by baseflow flowing to the Kiheung agricultural reservoir and well pumping were estimated to be $382{\times}10^3$ and $1,323{\times}10^3m^3/yr$, respectively. Occurrence of groundwater infiltration into sewage pipeline was rarely identified. Groundwater extraction amounts from the Bundang subway line as an underground facility were identified as $714{\times}10^3m^3/yr$. Overall, a total of the discharge amounts was determined to be $2,419{\times}10^3m^3/yr$, which was contributed by 29% of artificial discharge. Even though groundwater budget of the composite area was identified to be a surplus, it should be managed for a sound groundwater environment by changing deteriorated pipelines and controlling artificial discharge amounts.

  • As part of research to develop a permanent wave-reducing agent for hair, in the current study, 0.1%-1.0% of Polyquaternium-10 was added to a permanent reagent containing Nicotinoyl Dipeptide-23 to prepare the agent, which was tested on damaged hair. The pH change was relatively stable even after a date, but due to the hair's natural composition, 0.1%-0.6% of the Polyquaternium-10 concentration according to pH was suitable. The temperature safety experiment demonstrated it to be stable at a high temperature and at room temperature, but when a Polyquaternium-10 concentration of 0.9% or higher was added at 0℃, coagulation occurred. In terms of the force efficiency of permanent wave formation, wave efficiency lowered as the concentration increased: the longer the wave lasts, the lower the Polyquaternium-10 concentration. The permanent moisture content was found to be higher as the concentration of Polyquaternium-10 increased. Therefore, when Polyquaternium-10 is applied to the permanent wave-reducing agent, considering stability, permanent formation, durability, and moisture rate, the most suitable concentration was found to be that of Polyquaternium-10 in the cysteine-reducing agent. A novel finding from this study is that as the concentration of Polyquaternium-10 increases, the consistency of the permanent wave-reducing agent changes, shifting from a liquid to a viscous liquid formulation.

Risk Assessment of Airborne Volatile Organic Compounds in Ulsan Industrial Complex Area (울산공단지역의 대기중 휘발성 유기화합물에 대한 위해도 평가)

  • This study focused on risk assessment for inhalation of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Ulsan industrial complex area. For non-carcinogenic risk, even the highest hazard index of toluene was estimated to be $4.8\times10^{-2}$, which was much lower than 1. The total hazard index of VOCs was estimated to be $5.8\times10^{-2}$. However, lifetime average cancer risk from the inhalation of airborne VOCs was estimated to be about $1.1\times10^{-3}/$, which was much higher than a risk standard of $10^{-5}$. The risk of $4.4\times10^{-5}$. came from benzene, the only human carcinogen among VOCs, while that of $1.05\times10^{-3}$ from probable human carcinogens including 1,3-butadiene and 1,2-dichloroethane. About 70% and 20% of total VOC cancer risk was due to the inhalation of 1,3-butadiene and 1,2-dichloroethane, respectively. Therefore, proper risk management of these 3 VOCs was required for the protection of health from cancer burden in Ulsan industrial complex area.

  • In previous researches, it is reported that Ti-10Ta-10Nb is robuster than Ti-6A1-4V which is used as a biomaterial in a experiment of cytotoxicity. Ti-10Ta-10Nb has enough hardness to be required as a biomaterial because the change of its hardness can be controlled more than 100% according to heat treatment condition and manufacturing condition. There are many hardness changing condition including Cast Homogenization, Solution treatment. Forging, Rolling in this research. The changing form and amount of new Ti-10Ta-10Nb to be developed in this researches, are measured as quantitative. Specially, the changing hardness amount of the specimen that is manufactured in single phase temperature, i.e. 80$0^{\circ}C$, are measured in case of high temperature rolling and high temperature cast condition.

A Field Study on Community Facility Management of 10-Year Public Rental Apartment Housing and Community Program Management Plan in Response to Tenants' Needs (10년 공공임대아파트 커뮤니티 시설의 운영실태와 커뮤니티 프로그램 요구에 따른 운영 방안)

  • This study is to find out how community facilities of 10-year public rental apartments are currently managed and to propose a new community program management plan by analyzing key characteristics and program needs of tenants. Site visits and questionnaire surveys have been conducted at five different complexes producing 469 results that can be summarized as follows; 1) There were significant differences in the use of facilities and vitality of community among five complexes depending on tenants' participation and efforts of management staff. It was advisable to dispatch specialists, such as housing welfare workers, who were dedicated to managing facilities and supporting community programs; 2) There were high demanded for communication facilitation programs and environmental activities. Development of communication contents and distribution of manuals to inform and educate tenants about various environmental programs will be helpful; 3) The number of community facilities in each complex should be reduced those with high demand and the regional community center should be more vitalized with supporting programs and staff.
