In preparing micron-sized monodisperse polystyrene beads by dispersion polymerization, the conversion, and the particle size and its distribution were affected by the reaction temperature, concentration of the monomer, solvent and initiator, molecular weight and concentration of the steric stabilizer, amount of oxygen existing in the reactor, and an appropriate combination of these starting materials. Ethanol as a dispersing agent, styrene as a monomer, PVP as a steric stabilizer, AIBN as an initiator, DVB as a cross-linking agent and toluene as a co-solvent were the basic materials for the synthesis. The reaction rate and the conversion were increased with the reaction temperature and the amount of DVB from 1 to 4%, and the conversion was saturated after 10 hours of the reaction time. The optimum reaction recipe for the preparation of the monodisperse PS beads was 25% styrene monomer, 0.5% DVB, 25% toluene, 10-15% PVP, and 2 and 4% AIBN, thereby, 3.9~4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3.4~9.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of polystyrene beads, respectively, were successfully synthesized.

The effect of concentration as factor in cytotoxicity, protein synthesis and alkaline phosphatase activity was compared for pulpotomy medicaments (formaldehyde, formocresol, paraformaldehyde, ferric sulfate) Human pulp fibroblasts were exposed to a range of concentrations(0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, $1.00{\mu}l/ml$) of each agents, for period of 24hrs. The cell activities were evaluated by MTT assay, protein assay and alkaline phosphatase activity examination. The results as follows : 1. After 24hrs culture, pulp fibroblasts adding formaldehyde, formocresol and paraformaldehyde were suppressed cell activities with concentration increasing, but, no depression of cell activities by ferric sulfate. No significant difference was in formaldehyde, formocresol and paraformaldehyde. 2. Protein synthesis by pulpotomy agents were not significant difference in pulp fibroblasts but protein synthesis were a little decreased by paraformaldehyde. 3. Alkaline phosphatase activity was a little decreased by pulpotomy medicaments.

[ $0.6Pb(Sc_{1/2}Ta_{1/2})O_3-0.4PbTiO_3$ ] (hereafter PSTT) ceramics were prepared by the molten salt synthesis (MSS) method using KCI as a flux. Formation of perovskite phase was investigated by a differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in the temperature range from $600^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$. A 92% perovskite phase was synthesized at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs using the MSS method, while 82% perovskite phase was synthesized at $850^{\circ}C$ for 4ks using the calcining of mixed oxide (CMO) method. This result could be due to the improvement in reactivity of $Sc_2O_3$ by melting of KCI. The MSS specimen sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs showed a dielectric constant of 11,200, a remnant polarization of $13.5{\mu}C/cm^2$ and a coercive field of 10.198 kV/cm, which was discussed in view of the microstructure.

For the removal of cesium (Cs) from high radioactive/high salt-laden liquid waste, this study synthesized a highly efficient composite adsorbent (potassium cobalt ferrocyanide (PCFC)-loaded chabazite (CHA)) and evaluated its applicability. The composite adsorbent used CHA, which could accommodate Cs as well as other molecules, as a supporting material and was synthesized by immobilizing the PCFC in the pores of CHA through stepwise impregnation/precipitation with $CoCl_2$ and $K_4Fe(CN)_6$ solutions. When CHA, with average particle size of more than $10{\mu}m$, is used in synthesizing the composite adsorbent, the PCFC particles were immobilized in a stable form. Also, the physical stability of the composite adsorbent was improved by optimizing the washing methodology to increase the purity of the composite adsorbent during the synthesis. The composite adsorbent obtained from the optimal synthesis showed a high adsorption rate of Cs in both fresh water (salt-free condition) and seawater (high-salt condition), and had a relatively high value of distribution coefficient (larger than $10^4mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$) regardless of the salt concentration. Therefore, the composite adsorbent synthesized in this study is an optimized material considering both the high selectivity of PCFC on Cs and the physical stability of CHA. It is proved that this composite adsorbent can remove rapidly Cs contained in high radioactive/high salt-laden liquid waste with high efficiency.
This study was performed to compare in vitro immune enhancing effects of polysaccharides extracted from cultivated mycelia of Agaricus blazei Murill. Carbohydrate contents of semi-purified polysaccharides were 85.6% and 95.3%, while ${\beta}$-glucan conents were 67.9% and 88.1% for intracellular and extracellular polysaccharide, respectively. Samples were adjusted to the same in their carbohydrate contents before efficacy tests. Both intracellular and extracellular polysaccharide increased nitric oxide (NO) synthesis of macrophage RAW 264.7 in dose dependent manner, and the maximum increase rate was 53.9 and 53.1% in intracellular and extraceltular polysaccharide, respectively. The polysaccharides also increased synthesis of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ in RAW 264.7. For all the 3 cytokines, the increase rate of synthesis was much higher in extracellular polysaccharide compared to intracellular polysaccharide, especially at low concentration. Both polysaccarides increased the proliferation of splenocytes in vitro, intracellular polysaccharide showed increase in dose dependent manner while extraceltular polysaccharide showed increase untill medium concentration ($250\;{\mu}g/ml$). They did not show direct cytotoxicity against cancer cells such as B16F0 melanoma. As results, it was regarded that the both intracellular and extracellular polysaccharide from A. blazei showed immune enhancing effects in vitro, but the activity is higher in extracellular polysaccharide compared to intracellular polysaccharide.

Synthesis of the non-swelling property micas was carried out by hydrothermal method. In order to artificially induce the diffusion of ions, a rotating system was attached to the hydrothermal apparatus and by adding 0.7 mm zircon beads, synthesis of the non-swelling property micas could be performed in a low temperature area. The hydrothermal conditions for the preparation of micas were a reaction temperature of $260^{\circ}C$, for 72 hrs, using $1K_2O,\;1Al(OH)_3,\;4Mg(OH)_2\;and\;6SiO_2$ as the starting materials and a 8M-KOH solution as the hydrothermal solvent. The micas obtained under these conditions were a plate shape with a size of $2.89{\mu}m$ and showed a whiteness of over 97 %. Also, through the FT-IR analysis, because the absorption peak of the $Mg_3OH$ vibration was observed at approximately $3700cm^{-1}$, it could be known that it was phlogopite of non-swelling property showing the chemical composition of $KMg_3AlSi_3O_{10}(OH)_2$. This result was very consistent with the EDS analysis where O (41.34 %), Mg (3.88 %), Al (11.45 %), Si (17.62 %) and K (25.71%) elements were detected.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between nicotine and the activity of bone forming cell. MG63 osteoblast-like cells were used for this study. Several factors were examined including the proliferation of cell, alkaline phosphatase activity, the formation of osteocalcin and osteoprotegerin. and the synthesis of its mRNA. MG63 osteoblast-like cells were incubated for 1, 2, 3 and 6 days with nicotine added to the culture medium in 1.0 ${\mu}M$, 1.0mM, 2.5mM, 5.0mM, 7.5mM, and 10.0mM concentrations. The proliferation of MG63 osteoblast-like cells was temporarily activated at the low nicotine concentrations. At high concentrations (>5.0 mM), however. it was suppressed. Alkaline phosphatase activity was suppressed in a dose-dependent manner as the concentration of nicotine increased. Osteocalcin decreased in a dose-dependent manner at high nicotine concentrations of more than 7.5mM and the same result was show when the osteoblasts were treated with low concentrations for longer than 3 days. There was a difference in the influence of nicotine on the synthesis of osteocalcin mRNA and formation of osteocalcin itself at 1 and 3 days. Generally, osteoprotegrin notably declined in all experimental groups. However, the level of its mRNA increased at high nicotine concentrations of more than 7.5mM after 3 days and more than 5.0mM after 6days.
Transforming growth factor $-{\beta}$ is one of the polypeptide growth factors that mediate the activity of mesenchymal cells and regulate wound healing process via cell proliferation, migration and extracellular matrix formation. The purposes of this study is to evaluate the effects of transforming growth factor $-{\beta}$ on the protein synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts. The cells which were prepared were primary cultured gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells from humans, and the fourth or sixth subpassage were used in the experiments. Cells were seeded and at a confluent state, 0, 0.5, I, 2.5, 5, 10 ng/ml $TGF-{\beta}$ and $2{\mu]Ci/ml\;[^3H]$ proline were added to the cells and cultured for 24 hours. Then, 1 and 5 ng/ml concentrations were selected and added to confluent cells and cultured for 24 and 48 hours. They were labeled with $2{\mu}Ci/ml\;[^3H]$ proline for 24 hours and a collagen assay was done by the Peterkofsky and Diegelman method. The results were presented as the mean disintegration per minute (dpm) per well and S.D. of four determinations, The results were as follows. : The total protein, collagen and noncollagenous protein synthesis in periodontal ligament cells and gingival fibroblasts were increased dose- dependently by transforming growth factor-p to 2.5-5 ng/ml concentration and decreased at 10 ng/ml concentration. The percent of collagen was slightly changed according to the concentration of transforming growth factor-po The effect of transforming growth $factor-{\beta}$ was not specific for collagen synthesis since it increased the total, noncollagenous and collagenous protein, simultaneously. In the comparison of protein synthetic activity between the human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts, the human gingival fibroblasts had higher activities than the human periodontal ligament cells at all times and concentrations of $TGF-{\beta}$. In the comparison of protein synthetic activity between the 24 hour effect and the 48 hour effect of $TGF-{\beta}$, the 48 hour cultured cells' synthetic activity decreased more than the 24 hour cultured cells at human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts. In conclusion, $TGF-{\beta}$ has important roles in the stimulation of protein synthesis in human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts. Thus, it may be useful for clinical application in periodontal regenerative procedures.
The objectives of this study was to explore the growth pattern of the oral squamous cell carcinoma when overexpressed COX was inhibited, explore the pathway that COX inhibitors suppressed the proliferation of cancer cells, and then hereafter investigate the potential of COX as chemopreventive target for oral squamous cell carcinoma. For confirming the COX-dependent effect and mechanisms on growth of the oral cancer cells, we treated the nonselective NSAID, Mefenamic acid and COX-2 selective inhibitor, Celecoxib in HN4 cell line. And then the cell line was evaluated with MTT assay and growth curve, the production of PGE2, total RNA extraction and RT-PCR analysis, and TEM The results were obtained as follows: 1. After administration of medication, in the result of MTT assay, Celecoxib inoculated group inhibit the cell growth rather than Mefenamic acid inoculated group. 2. The growth curve of cell line showed as time passes by there was a dramatic cell growth in the control group, and gradual growth inhibition was found in medication inoculated group and, in Celecoxib inoculated group there was more inhibition of cell growth. 3. After the administration of medication, Celecoxib tend to inhibit the synthesis of PGE2 more than Mefenamic acid. Mefenamic acid inhibit the synthesis of PGE2 more as the concentration gets high, but Celecoxib inhibited the synthesis of PGE2 even in low concentration. 4. After the administration of medication, the revelation of COX mRNA in cell line, there was a 50% decrease in COX-1, 60% decrease in COX-2 as in $50{\mu}M$ Mefenamic acid, and in Celecoxib $50{\mu}M$ there was not much difference in COX-1 and 90% decrease in COX-2 was found. 5. HN4 cell line showed broken nucleus and tangled cytoskeleton bundles in cytoplasm which meant apoptotic features after the treatment of Celecoxib in TEM view. Depending on the above results, we estimate that the inhibition of the expression of COX-2 cause the growth suppression of the oral squamous cell carcinoma, and it get achieved through pathway of reduced PGE2 production and increased apoptosis. In addition to, because COX-2 selective inhibitor specifically act to COX-2, it is considered that COX-2 selective inhibitor has the adequate potential as chemopreventive agent for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

From the cooked-rice as a raw material, activated carbons throughout a hydrothermal synthesis and vacuum soak of KOH for chemical activation were obtained. Activated carbon electrodes for electric double layer supercapacitors were prepared and electrochemical characteristics were examined. Including the specific surface area by BET method and pore size distribution by NLDFT method, physical properties of activated carbons were investigated by means of SEM, EDS, XRD, and TG analyses. Cycle voltammetry and AC-impedance measurements were conducted to confirm the electrochemical characteristics for the electrodes. From hydrothermal synthesis, $5{\sim}7{\mu}m$ diameters of spherical carbons were obtained. After the activation at $800^{\circ}C$, it was notable for the activated carbon to be the specific surface $1631.8cm^2/g$, pore size distribution in 0.9~2.1 nm, and micro-pore volume $0.6154cm^3/g$. As electrochemical characteristics of the activated carbon electrode in 6M KOH electrolyte, it was confirmed that the specific capacitances of 236, 194, and 137 F/g at the scan rate of 5, 100, and 500 mV/s respectively were exhibited and 91.2% of initial capacitance after 100,000 cycles at 200 mV/s was maintained.
